Whether you live in the United States, Canada, Mexico, or on another continent, traveling overseas can pose problems when taking along electrical appliances because of voltage differences in various countries around the world.

When taking an extended vacation, there are some electrical items you just can’t live without. Needed items may include battery chargers (for cell phones, digital cameras, and other portable items), hairdryer, electric shaver, radio, curlers, iron, VCR, and DVD player. Without a proper voltage match, you could permanently damage your electrical product when plugging it into a power source.

Understand Voltage Differences before You Go

It’s a good idea to research voltage differences before traveling. Some countries have an across-the-board standard of 110 volts while others have a standard voltage of 220. For example, North American countries as well as parts of South and Central America, the Pacific and Caribbean operate on 110 volts. Other countries around the world operate on 220 volts, while some countries have both 110 and 220 voltage.

If you’re traveling from the United States (with a 110 volt standard) to Europe, and the area you plan to visit only uses 220 volts, you will need an 110v to 220v voltage converter, also called a step up voltage converter. On the other hand, if you are traveling from a country in Europe that has a 220 volt standard to the United States, you will need a 220v to 110v voltage converter, or a step down voltage converter.

What is a Voltage Converter or Voltage Transformer?

A voltage converter is a device used to convert the voltage of a power source to create a usable – and safe – power supply. Another word often used for voltage converter is voltage transformer although there are actually differences between the two. A voltage transformer is usually bigger in size and is designed for longer, continued use. A voltage converter will usually either double or cut in half the voltage, but some converters can do both.

Voltage converters usually come with plug end adapters that enable the conversion of the shape and size of the plug’s end. The plug adapter can be used without the converter if no voltage conversion is needed. It’s a good idea to carry with you a variety of plug end adapters because some countries have many different types of outlets. For example, some areas do not use the flat prong outlet that’s used in the United States.

Frequency Gaps – Cycle Mishaps

Some countries not only have voltage differences, but also frequency (cycles per second) differences. Many electrical appliances are not affected by this difference; however, some are such as clocks, espresso makers, and other timed products. A clock, for instance, may not keep time properly if there’s a frequency difference. Also, it’s not recommended to use voltage transformers with heat-making products such as steamers, small electric heaters, or coffee heaters. Some hotels forbid the use of certain electrical appliances, so check with the hotel to be sure you can bring the items along.

VCR and DVD Voltage Converters

If you plan to take along a VCR or DVD player, there are several options. You’ll need a voltage converter with most regular video or DVD players. There are, however, innovative code free (region free) DVD players that offer voltage capabilities for 110 volts and 220 volts. These won’t need a voltage converter because it’s built in. Keep in mind that using a voltage converter usually won’t work if there are frequency differences or format differences with the provided television set. Find out in advance if there will be problems so you can prepare.

When buying a voltage converter or transformer, first find out what type of conversion you will need – step up or step down. Most online electronics outlets offer many different types of 110220 volts converters, transformers, and plug adapters so you can easily find affordable solutions when you travel.

Now is the season most people ask themselves, what sort of presents or gifts they should buy for their family and friends. You want to buy something different to surprise your loved ones this Holiday. People get bored with the usual gifts such as clothes, candy, pens, etc. With the exception of children, who mostly just want toys for Christmas, most of us like to get something unique, yet useful.

Most people never consider buying self defense products as a stocking stuffer or Holiday gift. What better way to express your love for someone by giving them something that can protect their life? Probably one of the most popular products for personal defense in the world. Pepper spray can come in stream, spray, foam, gel and fog form. Some pepper spray is disguised to look like a lipstick container, perfume, pager, baton or even walking weights! Disguised pepper spray present an element of surprise against an attacker.

Personal Alarms
Personal alarms are a great attention getter when you are in danger. They have a very high pitched sound when activated and most have flashlights attached. Some even have a disable pin wrist strap. If someone tries to take it from you, the high pitched alarm will go off. This disable clip can also be used on doors and windows. Attaching it to these objects will alarm you if someone is trying to open a window or door into your home. Personal alarms are also used as medical or panic alarms. This self defense product requires batteries, which are usually included with the purchase.

Stun Devices
Stun devices are becoming more and more popular these days. These self defense weapons work by giving an attacker an electrical shock. The most common of these products are stun guns. But there are also stun batons, stun pens and cell phone stun guns. Recently the general public has also been able to purchase Tasers in addition to stun guns. A citizen air Taser comes in different models such as the Taser C2, X26c and M26c. Stun devices range between 200,000 volts and 3,000,000 volts. Many stun devices include flashlights and alarms. Some run on batteries and others are rechargeable.

Whether you want to give a simple small gift such as a pepper spray or a more elaborate present such as a Taser for Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, your gift will surely be appreciated!

[Jenn's] family is a single-car household. Because of this, it’s a little more difficult to get a jump start when the headlights run down the battery. Not wanting to ask the neighbors for help, her husband [Richard] decided to come up with his own solution.

Rummaging through the parts on hand, [Richard] went with his old friend Sonic the Hedgehog. He used two 12-volt, 1 amp Sega Genesis power adapters in parallel hooked up to a 12 volt, 3 amp  power supply. The end result is a 12-volt 5 amp source hooked to the car’s electrical system and used to get their road machine started.

We have enjoyed some of [Richard's] offerings in the past, such as Super Nintoaster and the Super Genintari but this is a bit less… eloquent. A few questions do come to mind. First of all, is this the best way to use parts of your 20-year-old gaming system?  How many amps does your average car starter pull down?  And finally, what kind of issues are we looking at with the lead acid battery under these conditions?  Weigh in on the conversation in the comments.

When you hear about batons, you think about the police using them against crowds. But batons aren’t just for police use anymore. Many security guards and animal control officers use batons and now citizens are using them as well. We are talking about stun batons with electrical volts and not just the ordinary baton! You rarely will see someone on the streets carrying one, but many homeowners are starting to see the benefits of having one in their home instead of keeping a baseball bat under their bed!

Benefits of Stun Batons

Some of the newer stun baton models are rechargeable, so the homeowner does not need to purchase extra batteries. In addition, most come with a convenient safety switch, holster and lifetime warranty.

What could be more perfect than to have a self defense product that blends right in with the college scene?

Fall is getting closer and as you or your child start packing their backpack for college, you should consider adding a self defense product. A pepper spray pen or a stun pen look like your typical school supplies, but these are no ordinary pens! Both of these pens look normal and provide you with the element of surprise against an attacker on campus or where ever you may be.

The Pepper Spray Pen contains 17% pepper that can disable an attacker as far as 5 to 7 feet away. This pen contains approximately 6 bursts and also a UV Dye to help police with identification when the person is apprehended. A one-second spray to the face will cause temporary blindness, choking, coughing, and nausea, bringing the attacker to their knees. Their eyes will burn and hurt so much that they would not be able to open them. In some cases, the eyes swell up and slam shut!  This self defense product is available in burgundy/black or pink and has a pocket clip just like any other pen.

The Stun Pen looks more like a magic marker and contains 800,000 volts of power! Just test firing this stun pen into the air is often enough to stop an attacker. As the bright electric current pulsates across the top of the unit it creates an intimidating electrical sound. An attacker with any sense at all will be stopped in their tracks. If the sight and sound doesn’t stop them, a jolt from this unit certainly will. The stun pen also comes with a built-in LED flashlight, safety switch and even a holster! Although it comes with a holster it is slim enough to carry in your pocket or purse. The holster is if you prefer to carry it on your belt. This self defense product is available in black and batteries are included.

Keep in mind that safety in college is just as important as getting good grades!

Bem como prometido, porém atrasado, aqui está a continuação do conteúdo sobre no-breaks que todos deviam saber. Como houve algumas informações que ficaram confusas, começarei falando sobre elas. Algo bem rápido.

Começando pela formula de conversão:

(Watts*1.52)*1.30=Valor em VA que o computador consumirá.

Os nossos leitores, experts em física, não entenderam bem os valores acima, se você não entendeu atenção! A primeira constante, 1.52, serve para converter em VA considerando o mundo real e não o mundo ideal, que é o da física. Nesse valor está embutido as resistências que a eletricidade encontra nos aparelhos. Eletricidade essa que não tem aproveitamento nenhum, ela apenas se perde, devido a má eficiência dos condutores. O segundo valor é somente uma margem de erro de 30% para que um erro de cálculo não acarrete na sobrecarga do no-break.

Esclarecidas as dúvidas vamos aos novos assuntos:

No-break, é uma palavra (na verdade duas) em inglês que define bem a função do aparelho. Porém nem todos os no-breaks realmente evitam a pausa no fornecimento de energia ao computador. Alguns ditos no-breaks, geralmente os com uma faixa de preço mais baixa, tendem a interromper o fornecimento elétrico por alguns milissegundos. Isso ocorre devido o aparelho só entrar em ação no momento em que a eletricidade para de fluir. Esses são os chamados off-line.  Eles têm um tempo de retardo para começarem a fornecer a energia armazenadas em suas baterias. Esse tempo varia de 10 a mais ou menos 5ms. Os no-breaks on-line, como já devem imaginar, são o oposto. Esses não possuem tempo de retardo.

Dentre os on-line, existem: on-line em paralelo e on-line em série. No-breaks em paralelo possuem sistema de alimentação pelas baterias em paralelo com a alimentação pela rede elétrica. Nesse caso o no-break, quando está tudo normal, funciona simplesmente como uma extensão. Sendo assim o computador e tudo que estiver ligado ao aparelho fica vulnerável aos problemas da rede elétrica: picos/vales de tensão, ruído, entre outros.

Já o no-break on-line em série, alimenta suas saídas sempre com a carga da bateria. Desse modo a energia fornecida pela concessionária da sua cidade alimenta as baterias que por sua vez alimenta os aparelhos ligados às saídas. Esses têm a vantagem de fornecer uma energia limpa, estável, livre de ruídos, dentre outras vantagens. A única parte ruim é o consumo pois o aparelho tem que converter a corrente alternada em contínua  para carregar a bateria. Depois disso ele converte novamente a corrente contínua em alternada, para alimentar a saída. Ainda não acabou, após toda essa conversão ainda tem a fonte que transformará em contínua novamente. Nesse processo perde-se muita energia, deixando a eficiência lá no chão.

E Deus disse: “Tu prefererás no-breaks on-line!”

Porém os on-line são meio salgados ao bolso de alguns. Nesse caso escolha o aparelho que oferecer um menor tempo de retardo. Existem ainda os chamados line interactive. O diferencial deles é o tempo de retardo menor e um estabilizador embutido.

Outro fator de escolha de um bom no-break é a forma da onda que ele gera. No mundo ideal a onda perfeita seria essa:

"Cara que onda perfeita maluco!" "Sóóóó!"

Mas na vida real. As ondas são mais ou menos assim:

"Mó quadrada ai!"

Apesar de não ser exatamente uma forma senoidal como na primeira figura, a segunda imagem também pode ser considerada como onda senoidal. Sendo assim para um no-break ser bom, é necessário que ele tenha em sua saída uma onda senoidal. Porém no-breaks como esse costumam ser grandes como um gabinete, ou mais, e serem caros. Devido a isso só nos sobra os aparelhos com ondas de saída senoidais por aproximação” ou, também conhecida como, “stepped sine wave”.

Mas com uma boa fonte isso não é problema.

Uma característica que um bom no-break tem é a não utilização da carga da bateria quando esse é ligado sem estar conectado a rede. Ou a rede estar sem energia. Isso impede alguma estupidez tipo: “Já que acabou a energia e não tenho nada para fazer, vou ligar o pc pra jogar.” É importante saber que no-breaks não são feitos para isso!

Com o fim próximo (Ah! Apocalipse! Corre!) restam apenas algumas pequenas características que quando somadas deixam seu no-break perfeito, ou não.

Conexão com o computador: Algo como um USB ou serial são importantes. Elas permitem a comunicação entre os equipamentos, assim coisas como esgotar a bateria do no-break antes do desligamento do computador são evitadas.

Funções extras: Ou também, funções embutidas como: Estabilizador, filtro de linha, proteção de fax-modem.

Sinalizadores para monitoramento: Esses são importantes pois te deixam a par de informações sobre a carga da bateria, tensão da rede, método de alimentação(rede/baterias) entre outros. Esses sinalizadores podem ser displays, bips, luzes, tudo que te chamar a atenção.

Por último e mais importante, na maioria dos casos, as marcas. Existem muitas marcas boas bem como ruins. As mais bem faladas são APC, SMS, NHS e Ragtech. Com toda essa informação você está apto a comprar seu no-break.

PLAN A: Volts, The Zion Laser Strike, Census @ Radio Room–The scene seems saturated with lo-fi noise these days, but it certainly doesn’t begin or end with Wavves. Volts and The Zion Lazer Strike (both tied for best band name in San Diego) are a couple of newcomers making some serious racket. And I have Todd Kroviak to thank for hipping me to Census, a one-man, mainly instrumental project that jumps from shoegaze drones (“Vindica Arieless”) to ambient walls of sound (“Always Something to Learn”). Good stuff. PLAN B: Knives!, Gran Sasso, The Displaced @ Ruby Room–Knives ! seem to be getting better and better, and while there’s nothing wholly original about their clever mix of old-school punk and garage rock, their live show is kick-ass. And I’m happy to see The Displaced on the bill. In and out of the scene for almost a decade, they’re poppy indie-rock always made me wish that they could find a steady drummer.  BACKUP PLAN: Amazing Baby, Long Live Logos, The Color Of Glass and guests @ The Casbah–Joining the likes of Glasvegas and The Airborne Toxic Event, Amazing Baby have a big buzz and a grandiose sound to match. And these Brooklyn cats aren’t exactly hiding their Brit influences. Their debut, Rewild, is packed full of Pink Floydish diatribes (“Invisible Palace”) and tracks that would fit nicely on some future Nuggets comp (“Headdress”). I swear I here some latter-day Pulp in there as well (“Bayonets”). While there’s a little too much posturing for my tastes (seriously, they look like they’re about to have some peyote-induced hippie orgy with MGMT in the video for “Headdress.” See below), they’ve got major-label distribution in Europe and I reckon they’ll have it in the States before too long. So once they land in the background of some Gossip Girl makeout scene, you can say you saw them way-back-when.

And as AnnaMaria Stephens’ article from last week’s issue points out, there’s way more to this young Norwegian than I originally thought. PLAN B: Extreme Animals, Volts, Moon Pearl @ Che Cafe–Schools out for summer but the Che Cafe’s got one more homework question for you: What happens when you mix crunk and punk? Do you call it “prunk”? I’m not sure either but judging by the strange noises coming from Extreme Animals, bands like Atari Teenage Riot and Crystal Castles just aren’t fucking weird enough. Sam goes for the O.C.’s Moon Pearl. They describe themselves as “60% GWAR, 40% pussy,” but really, it’s some sweet fuzzed-out noise-rock that sometimes has a booty-bouncing beat overtop it. Lil Jon would be proud. BACKUP PLAN: Mothfight!, Donkeys DJs @ Ruby Room–Is “moth” the new nom de jour for indie bands. We certainly have enough “wolf,” “bear” and “bird” bands. Simply put, if you dig Animal Collective, miss Polyphonic Spree, or totally geek out over the Flaming Lips, then you definitely want to check out the Austin weirdos in Mothfight!.

Se você mora e/ou morou em locais muito distantes da capital do seu estado, como a bela Lauro de Freitas onde vivo (Ironia), então você já teve problemas com surtos de energia. Surtos esses como: Picos de tensão, quedas de tensão, inexistência de tensão, entre tantos.

Como se já não fosse inconveniente o suficiente ficar sem energia, dependendo do surto, os problemas de tensão ainda causam a queima de vários aparelhos eletrônicos. O computador é a maior vítima, pelo menos no mundo geek.

É nessas horas que o filho da tia do primo do vizinho da rua de trás, que é técnico, sugere a inclusão de um no-break na sua lista de aparatos para proteger seu computador. E nessa mesma hora você se depara com um enorme problema.

Leitores no-break, no-break leitores.

Isso não é uma coisa que ocorre isoladamente, muitos passam por problemas do tipo. Mas poucos sabem o que é, como funciona, como escolher e qual melhor marca. Dar-te-ei primeiramente a definição de no-break.

No-break seria, em inglês, algo como “sem pausa”. Há ainda outra nomenclatura, UPS-Uninterruptible Power Supply. A sua principal função é evitar que o fornecimento de energia, ao equipamento conectado a saída do aparato, seja interrompido repentinamente. E para isso ele armazena a energia em baterias, para que essas forneçam a energia quando a concessionária de sua cidade para de fornecer eletricidade por qualquer motivo.

Assumindo que o no-break seja usado com um computador, esse tempo é suficiente para salvar arquivos, parar atividades e desligar corretamente o computador. Uma função que é bastante confundida como sendo obrigatória em no-breaks, é a de estabilizador.

Agora que já tem uma noção do que é o no-break e o que ele faz está na hora de saber qual deles atenderá suas necessidades. O primeiro passo é verificar o quanto seu computador consome. Isso é verificado somando o consumo de cada componente do computador. É importante deixar claro que não é só porque sua fonte é de 500watts que seu computador consumirá 500watts. Porém existe um motivo lógico para você ter colocado uma fonte de 500w então é melhor se basear nesse valor que é o máximo que seu computador pode consumir, um dia sem a troca da fonte.

Obtido o valor, se este for em watts é necessário fazer a conversão para VA(VoltsAmpere) que é a unidade usada nas especificações dos no-breaks. A conversão é simples, basta multiplicar o valor em watts por 1,52. Sendo assim com a fonte de 500 obteremos 760VA. Depois disso, para mantermos uma margem de segurança, multiplicamos o valor em VA por 1.3. O resultado será de 988. A formula básica é:

(Watts*1.52)*1.30=Valor em VA que o computador consumirá.

Agora você já tem noção de quão “potente” o no-break deve ser para te atender. Mas isso não é nada. Você apenas acabou o ensino médio ainda falta o superior.

Na hora de comprar um no-break você tem que verificar outras características como: se ele é on-line ou off-line, se tem luzes indicadoras, se cabe no bolso, se a marca é confiável, dentre outras coisas. Mas isso agente vai ver mais para frente esse post já deu o que tinha de dar. Até o próximo post, que não passará da semana que vem.

 Hoje acontece lá a noite da Caravana da Coragem… mas a grande novidade fica por conta dos convidados. A festa que já é interessante em si, com todos queridos, convidou outras duas festas para participarem hoje.

Uma é a Jaca, festa que acontece uma vez por mês num lugar escondidinho e muito aconchegante no Centro, reunindo nomes da cena underground. A outra é a intinerante Plastick Eletronik, que já tocou em diversos clubs e agora pinta por lá.

 Pois bem, leve 3 em 1! Tudo isso desenvolvido por um som bem elegante com bases de eletro, house e minimal.

 No sábado, acordo um pouco cansada – leia-se de ressaca(!) e vou para o restaurante Panda, que possui um mix interessante da culinária chinesa e japonesa. O bacana é que lá o almoço é servido até o final da tarde, e assim vc pode dormir um pouco mais.

 No final da tarde indico uma ida a Pinacoteca.

Para quem gosta de fotografia, está rolando uma exposição temporária chamada “À procura de um olhar” com imagens em preto e branco, capitadas por artistas franceses e brasileiros.

 A ida lá é ótima, pois além de adquirir cultura, sem pagar nada por isso (aos sábados a entrada é franca), o gostoso é parar para tomar um café e comer um croissant na cafeteria, que fica ao ar livre. 

Pode continuar com um passeio pelo parque que fica lá dentro mesmo, para aproveitar o entardecer. Durante os finais de semana, vc encontra diversas pessoas fazendo rodinhas de música e pode desfrutar de jazz, bossa nova, entre outros. Uma coisa meio parisiense.

De lá vou para casa e já saio de novo.

If you own a stick or more of this ram you’re in luck, you’ve well spet your money. These babys are very affordable and can be pushed to perform better than some more expensive competitors. However if you don’t pay attention, you might be mission out on the good stuff. My motherboard automatically set the ram at 5-5-5-18, which is not really where you optimally want to be since these sticks handle faster timings. 4-4-4-12 is where I’ve had mine for a long time at 2.1V (default 1.9V), but now I’m trying 4-4-4-10. With my cpu at 3.6ghz and my memory multiplier at 2.0D the system runs pretty nicely. Note that I’m not pushing the mhz higher than the original 800mhz. Give the timings a shot if you haven’t already
