Volvo Recalls XC60

It must be recall season, because there have been an insane amount of recalls lately, and here’s yet another one. Volvo is recalling their XC60.

There are 8,438 affected cars. The problem is that the driver’s seatbelt could become detached from the seat frame in a side impact crash, as was discovered during safety testing by the NHTSA.

The NHTSA say “The driver’s seat side cover panel (seat control panel) in certain driver-side impacts may release the attachment of the seatbelt to the seat frame. Should this condition occur in a crash, the seatbelt may fail to properly restrain the occupants, increasing the risk of injury.”

There have been no reports of this happening outside tests, but better safe than sorry, so they’re recalling them.

Dealerships will be modifying the inside of the driver’s seat side cover panel to fix this. The recall should begin on December 15th.

If you own a XC60, my advice would be to call up your local dealer, or Volvo directly (US number is (800) 458-1552), and schedule the fix as soon as possible. Try not to drive the car until the fix is installed, as it’s hard to say whether or not you’ll get into a crash which may trigger this problem.

Toyota engagiert sich sozial im Web 2.0

Toyota hat in Amerika eine Website gelauncht, die das Thema CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) perfekt thematisiert. Auf der Website “Toyota beyond cars” kann man sich über aktuelle CSR Aktivitäten von Toyota USA informieren und sehen, welche gesellschaftliche Verantwortung Toyota auf sich nimmt. Das besondere an der Website ist neben der grafischen Gestaltung, dass Personen an dem Projekt teilhaben können. In bester Web2.0-Manier ist es also möglich, eigene Vorschläge für Projekte einzustellen, Projekte zu kommentieren und zu bewerten, oder Projekte via Facebook, Twitter oder Mail bekannt zu machen. Insgesamt eine perfekte Umsetzung!

Weitere interessante Aktivitäten mit gesellschaftlichem Engagement von Autoherstellern sind die Kampagne von Volvo, in der ein blinder Künstler ein noch nicht präsentiertes Auto malt und die Kampagne von VW – mit Spaß geht alles leichter.

Social Media und ROI, passt das?

Ja tut es! Und das hat @equalman in einem Video sehr schön veranschaulicht. Er berichtet über verschiedene bekannte Cases, bei denen der Einsatz von Social Media den ROI beachtlich gesteigert hat. Das Video will allen klar machen, dass der Einsatz von Social Media günstig, wirkungsvoll und nötig ist. Und das nicht nur im B2C Bereich. Auf Grund der Thematik gehört dieses Video auf jeden Fall in unser monatliches Röhren. Also –> Watch it!

IKEA nutzt Facebook-Potential

Der schwedische Möbelhersteller IKEA hat für die Eröffnung einer neuen Filiale in Malmö (Schweden) die Werbetrommel im Internet gerührt. In dem sozialen Netzwerk Facebook machte man sich die meistgenutzte Funktion zum Vorteil. Der Storemanager erstellte sich ein neues Profil und stellte Fotos von Showrooms online. In diesen Showrooms konnte man nun die einzelnen Gegenstände taggen – wie man das auf normalen Fotos mit Freunden tut. Wer sich als erster auf einem Gegenstand markiert hattte gewann den Gegenstand. Das gesamte Projekt war mit geringsten Kosten ein voller Erfolg – auch dank des Word of Mouth Effekts, weil man die tolle Idee gerne an Freunde empfahl.

Neue Google-Gadgets entdeckt

Mit einem kleinen Trick kann man jetzt noch mehr Zeit bei Youtube verbringen… Ersetzt man in der Adresszeile des Browsers in der Videoansicht bei einem Youtube-Video das “watch” durch “warp.swf” erscheint eine graphische Darstellung des Videos und assoziierte Videos mit ähnlichen Inhalten. Einfach mal testen!

Ein weiteres neues Feature der Bildersuche ist Google Image Swirl. Auch hier lassen sich ähnliche Bilder schnell mit wenigen Klicks finden.

Helicopter-Boyz-Dance für Nikon

Nikon hat die erste digitale Kompaktkamera mit integriertem Beamer, die Coolpix S1000pj, vorgestellt. Für diese großartige Neuigkeit hat Nikon keinen geringeren als die Helicopter Boyz erfunden. Die Jungs fotografierten zunächst ausgesattet mit einem “Kamera-Anzug” einige Gegenstände um diese dann später auf einer Bühne in einem coolen Tanz künstlerisch mit Hilfe der neuen Kamera an die Wand zu projizieren. Mit einem Live-Fotoshooting erhält die Show dann noch einen grandiosen Höhepunkt.
Ein sehr kreatives Launch-Event für die Coolpix Kamera, das alle technischen Highlights des Modells ausschöpft.

Fahrbericht Volvo S80 AWD | Bei dem piept's wohl!

„Passen Sie bloß auf, wenn Sie auf das Gaspedal treten“, werde ich vom Überbringer des Schweden aufgeklärt, als ich ihn zum Bahnhof bringe. „Der geht ab wie nix gutes!“ Ich bringe ein kleines Lächeln auf, um der lieb gemeinten Warnung Aufmerksamkeit zu zollen. Der Überbringer ist voll des Lobes, geradezu euphorisch. Der Schwede hat bei ihm großes geleistet, wie es scheint.

Nun ja, er ist auch nicht der Kleinste. Mit einer recht imposanten Länge von 4,80 m bewegt er sich auf dem Level von A6, 5er und E-Klasse. Mit Audi teilt er sich sogar eine Gemeinsamkeit. In der Basis gibt’s einen dicken Happen mit schlappem Motor und freundlich untersteuerndem Fahrverhalten dank Frontantrieb. Aber in der Vollendung gibt es Hubraum, Sound und Allrad. Quasi existenzielle Grundbedürfnisse eines jeden Mannes. Fakten auf den Tisch, der Schwede hat einen Namen: Volvo S80.

Faszinierend, wie der Freundes- und Bekanntenkreis auf das Fahrzeug reagiert. „Was fährste denn jetzt wieder für eine Protzkarre“ werde ich gefragt. Volvo und mein Bekanntenkreis scheinen irgendwie nicht per Du zu sein, denn kaum erwähnte ich das böse V-Wort, folgte bloß ein: „Aha…“ Noch nicht einmal den Hauch einer Chance bekam ich, um zu erwähnen, dass hier ein schick verpackter V8 unter der Haube wütet. Stattdessen kam eine faszinierende Ansammlung von Desinteresse zum Vorschein. Nun gut, das hält mich aber trotzdem nicht davon ab, den S80 drei Wochen lang auf Herz und Nieren zu testen.

Das äußere Antlitz ist alles andere als protzig. Man übt sich in nordisch kühlem Understatement. Im Gegensatz zu seinen Konkurrenten der Oberklasse, möchte der S80 seine Fahrgäste unauffällig von A nach B bringen. Von einer aggressiven Front im Stil von BMW oder vom pompösen Auftritt eines Mercedes, entfernt sich der S80 soweit es geht. Mit diesem Auto darf man den Luxus der Oberklasse genießen, ohne den Neid der Umwelt zu spüren. Das ist gewollt und kommt besonders in den USA, wo der Hauptabsatzmarkt des S80 ist, gut an.

Aussen: nordisch kühles Understatement

Gleich zu Anfang geht es zu einem Termin nach Süddeutschland. So durfte sich der Achtzylinder sofort einem Reisetest unterziehen. Dabei fiel besonders die Soundkulisse angenehm auf. Der Klang liegt irgendwo zwischen dem sonoren Grummeln eines Mercedes und der faszinierenden Laufruhe eines Lexus. Nicht zu laut und nicht zu leise. Genau der richtige Ton für ein Familienauto. Besonders lustig ist es anzusehen, wenn man den Motor an der Ampel kurz aufheulen lässt. Denn darauf versucht die männliche Gattung dem Sound ein Gesicht zu geben… und sie schauen alle gnadenlos am Volvo vorbei.

Dieses Understatement macht den Volvo S80 noch interessanter. Dank eines satten Hubraums von knapp viereinhalb, schickt das nett anzuschauende V8-Aggregat 315 Pferde auf die Räder. Mit einem maximalen Drehmoment von 440 Nm spurtet der Schwede in nur 6,5 Sekunden von 0 auf 100. Der Vorwärtsdrang endet erst bei Tempo 250. Das Fahrwerk könnte, trotz verstellbarer Dämpfungsstufen, zumindest im Sportmodus ein ganzes Stück straffer sein. Ab Tempo 220 fühlen sich die 1,8 Tonnen Leergewicht doch recht schwammig an. Die Automatik funktioniert dabei jedoch tadellos. Man merkt schnell, dieses Auto ist voll und ganz auf den amerikanischen Markt zugeschnitten.

Auch Innen: Understatement im Luxus Trimm

Auch der Innenraum gibt sich zurückhaltend. Dennoch wirkt er gut verarbeitet und alle Schaltelemente fühlen sich gut an. Die Ledersitze sind bequem, bieten allerdings kaum Seitenhalt. Alles sitzt an seinem Platz und das Navigationssystem kommt nur bei Bedarf aus der Mittelkonsole hervor. Bedient wird sie über eine simple Steuerung, direkt am Lenkrad. So muss der Fahrer auch während der Fahrt nicht die Hände vom Lenkrad nehmen. Im Fond dürfen sich die Beifahrer über ein DVD Multimedia System (optional) freuen.

Einen besonderen Härtetest hatte der S80 als Hochzeitsauto zu überstehen. Hübsch dekoriert hieß es nun die Braut samt Bräutigam sicher von der Kirche zur abendlichen Feier zu geleiten. Und er enttäuschte nicht ein Stück. Der geräumige Fond ließ genug Platz für den großen Bräutigam und die Braut, mit ihrem doch sehr pompösen Kleid. Der laufruhige V8 schnurrte vor sich hin und die komfortabel abgestimmte Federung brachte die beiden glücklich Vermählten zu Feierlocation. Ein perfekter Abend mit einem scheinbar perfekten Gentleman.

Wenn piepen zur Nötigung wird

Am nächsten Tag ging es mit zwei hübschen Ladys im Gepäck von Hamburg nach Rostock. Unter Vollgas schnell zu bewältigen. Bis Tempo 180 erledigte der S80 dies auch souverän. Doch hier zeigte sich, dass sich die Damen bei höheren Geschwindigkeiten eher unwohl fühlten. Das ist besonders interessant, weil die Beiden zuvor in einem bayrischen Fabrikat mitfuhren und dort selbst bei 250 Sachen die komplette Fahrt über geschlafen haben.

Der Schwede schafft es sogar, den Fahrer und Mitfahrer konsequent in den Wahnsinn zu treiben. Denn der S80 piept nicht nur an allen Ecken, er setzt noch visuell eins drauf und nutzt die gesamte optische Wahrnehmung des Fahrers mittels aufblinkender LED-Lights.

In der Praxis kann man sich das in etwa so vorzustellen: Fahre ich zu nah auf oder jemand schiebt sich auf der Autobahn vor mich leuchten in der Windschutzscheibe rote LEDs auf. Ok, soweit ist es noch auszuhalten. Wird’s dem Dicken dann doch ein bisschen zu heikel, kommt noch ein wenig mehr Licht dazu und ein wunderbar nerviger Warnsound. Besonders cool kommt dies, wenn meilenweit Niemand vor einem fährt und sich aus heiterem Himmel das Warnsignal anschaltet.

Oder nehmen wir die Parksensoren. Im Grunde genommen sind akustische Parksensoren ein Segen für Jedermann. Wenn diese sich allerdings an jeder zweiten Ampel einschalten und zudem das Radio automatisch leiser wird, fängt es durchaus an unentspannt zu werden. Noch nicht genug? Hey, da haben wir noch die tolle Funktion des Lane Assistent, der darauf achtet, dass man auch brav in der Spur bleibt.

Was bei anderen Herstellern gerne per Vibrieren im Lenkrad signalisiert wird, gibt der Schwede mit einem weiteren herrlichen Piepskonzert wieder. Das treibt den Fahrer, besonders auf den vielen Autobahnbaustellen, in den Wahnsinn. Einzig der wirklich perfekt abgestimmte Abstandsradar mit Tempomat und der Rechte-Winkel-Warner in den Außenspiegeln, sind wirklich exzellente Gimmicks, auf die man ungern wieder verzichtet. Und den Rest kann man ja zur Not auch abschalten.

Auch die Heckklappe verdient eine Rüge. Meist wird er in den Fahrberichten von mir ignoriert, der Kofferraum. Solange mein Reisekoffer samt Fotosachen oder auch die Einkäufe aus dem Supermarkt souverän verstaut werden können, reicht mir das vollkommen aus. Wenn allerdings noch nicht einmal ein handelsüblicher Umzugskarton durch die unpraktische Luke in den Kofferraum passt, ist das ein Defizit, das es zu erwähnen gilt.

Fazit: Der Volvo S80 V8 ist ein harmonisches Automobil für Käufer, die Wert auf Understatement und Laufruhe legen. Der Motor ist ein kleines Sahnestück, was man leider nicht von der viel zu schwammigen Federung behaupten kann. Hohe Geschwindigkeiten werden von Mitfahrern als unangenehm empfunden und auch das Lenkrad gibt viel zu wenig Feedback von der Straße wieder. Ausserdem stört der viel zu kleine Kofferraumdeckel, durch den noch nicht einmal ein handelsüblicher Umzugskarton passen will.

Es ist schade, dass der Wagen, trotz des adaptiven Fahrwerks immer noch so amerikanisch schwammig rüberkommt. Mit ein paar Optimierungen an dem Fahrwerk hätte der S80 auch in Europa wesentlich mehr Fans. Wer es jedoch nicht eilig hat und die Laufruhe eines V8 zu schätzen weiß, hat hier einen angenehmen Reisegefährten gefunden… bis dieser anfängt zu piepen…

I am so wrong about the Volvo brand… albeit i think their designs are a little dull but i went to the cinema to watch Twilight the other day and low and behold Edward Cullen (the sexy vampire) a.k.a Robert Pattinson was driving a VOLVO!! Well in a bid to quash all those nerdy rumours of bad driving and bad drivers this is definitely the way to do it, he was driving it like a bat out of hell. It is a stunning car! – I’ll refrain from making any joke about only a vampire would buy a Volvo because i would! Robert Pattinson has proven to be a winning endorser for the brand – a very good move on Volvo’s part. I don’t think i can actually think of a better car other than the Volvo for a gorgeous vampire man to drive, i would have said the Volkswagen Scirocco. Aberdeen woodland and fore3stry would be a lovely setting for the stunner, but the Volvo surpasses expectations and i think it’s gorgeous.

“Например, запросы завода VW на тысячу специалистов мы в следующем году за счет собственных ресурсов удовлетворить не сможем, поэтому трудоустройство сотрудников АВТОВАЗа было бы для нас привлекательным вариантом”, – сказала она на пресс-конференции, организованной РИА Новости совместно с администрацией Калужской области.

При этом Подковинская отметила, что на оплату транспортных расходов и проживания для рабочих из Тольятти и Самары необходимы средства. “Если будут выделены федеральные средства, мы сможем реализовать такую программу трудоустройства”, – добавила министр.
В настоящее время в Калужской области создается кластер автомобильной промышленности, включающий предприятия Volvo, PSA, Renault, Mitsubishi и VW.
Подковинская напомнила, что одним из условий прихода крупных инвесторов в Калужскую область было открытие специального Центра опережающего обучения и подготовки высококвалифицированных кадров для автомобильной промышленности.
В центре уже прошли обучение более 2 тысяч человек. В случае перехода работников АВТОВАЗа на автопредприятия Калужской области, они также смогут пройти переподготовку в этом центре.
На базе центра планируется также обучение старшекурсников профильных учреждений начального и среднего профессионального образования, организация курсов повышения квалификации мастеров производственного обучения.

Som Pappa köpte ny en gång i tiden. När vi köpte den hade den gått 11000 mil och nu har vi lagom kört in den till den nya ägaren, nu har den gått 24000 mil.

Registreringsnumret är ett av de mest sökta på Mekonomen men det beror inte på att den gått sönder hela tiden utan det är ett bra regnummer att testa med.

Correct thermostat

Today I replaced the thermostat with a correct one. As you can see from the photo’s above the old one (top photo’) was wrong in four different ways. First of all and most importantly it does not have the disc that extends down to block the radiator bypass when the thermostat opens. Secondly it is a 80 degree ’stat instead of the correct 77 degree one. Thirdly it is actually too small. Finally it is missing the small hole with the loose, weighted pin in it that helps with bleeding the air out of the system when you fill it amongst other things. I hoped that this would cure it but when I ran the engine, again the level in the reservoir bottle rose almost to the top at which point I turned the engine off. Now this may just have been due to trapped air in the system, but to be sure I decided to swap the water pump and check for any blockages. This would also allow me to fit the chrome lower radiator pipe I bought at the Volvo national. Swapping the water pump was relatively painless although I have not been able to refill with coolant yet and see how it behaves. There was nothing obviously wrong with the old pump so I will just have to presume I had trapped air in the system and will try harder to bleed it all out when I fill it again. I will also only fill the reservoir bottle to the minimum level to give the maximum amount of room for any expansion if I don’t manage to get all the air out.

I managed to find a sheet metal place that let me have a couple of pieces of steel to make a new bracket from which I have now done. All I need to do now is paint it and then fit it, at least I hope so anyway. Well I may cut one or two corners off just to lighten it up a bit. On Saturday I flushed out the coolant system. I have not been happy with the cooling of the engine and it has been ejecting coolant from the reservoir bottle as well. I removed loads of rusty sediment and freed up the drain cock in the block. Despite the coolant being only a few months old it was in pretty poor shape so I filled up with new. I thought that this would have a good chance of curing it as I suspected the block to be full of crud. I could not flush it very effectively when it was stuck in the garage as I had no running water nearby. Unfortunately after running the engine for a while it started to eject coolant again. After some discussion on the 1800list it looks like I may very well have the wrong thermostat in there. This was fitted new when I was initially sorting it all out but as far as I can remember does not look like the correct one that I have now seen pictures of. So I have had a new thermostat delivered and will fit it as soon as the opportunity presents itself. If that does not sort it out then I will swap the water pump and have another go at flushing the coolant system when the old one is off. I have a new pump that I got quite cheaply on eBay a while ago.

I attempted to fit a modified bracket to convert to a brake light switch that works on pedal movement instead of the hydraulic pressure as at present. I thought I had it all in and lined up OK before I realised I had put it onto the clutch pedal instead of the brake pedal. So now I’m going to have to go and get some sheet steel and make a new bracket that will reach across to the brake pedal. Oh well you can’t win them all. I should have mentioned that I fitted new ducting to the defroster vents from the heater box a couple of weeks ago. That is a big improvement over the old rotted or aluminium or just missing ones that were there previously.

Went to the VOC National BKV yesterday. I was seduced by some chrome bits from Amazon Cars along with a very nice exhaust system as well so my wallet came away much lighter and the car much heavier. The exhaust system is by Simonz and I am assured will be much easier to fit than the stock system, so here’s hoping. It is also a larger bore than stock which should help the engine breathe a bit more easily and might even release a few more horses, again here’s hoping. Some very nice 1800s there which would have put mine to shame so it is just as well I didn’t take it. I picked up the upper ball joints there and the lower ball joints arrived today so I am just about set to go over the front suspension but I am not in too much of a hurry to do it as it might mean the car is not driveable for a while especially if the lower wishbone is as much of a pain to get off as some other people have experienced. This is quite likely as it is another sleeve over a bolt affair but much bigger than the sway bar link rod, so it will be much harder I expect.

Went for a ride in the car today. Noticed a clunk coming from under the car on rare occasions. I will have to check out the centre support bearing carrier as I think it is the prop-shaft hitting the floor but I can’t be sure yet. I applied a heat gun to the glued on window winder this morning and managed to remove it without doing any obvious damage to the winder nor the door panel which is a big relief. I still have to remove the rest of the glue from the inside of the winder before I can refit it but that should not be too hard. I spent some of my birthday money on a new cordless drill that has three batteries and I put it to good use this afternoon cleaning out the channel round the boot opening but I still only managed three out of the four sides, there was a lot of rust and bodyfiller to remove. I think I may actually have to remove the boot lid to get at the top edge. I have now bought or ordered top and bottom ball joints and polyurethane bushings all round to give the front suspension a complete going over. The rear will be done later although I did win a new pair of trailing arm bushes (the big ones) cheaply on eBay the other day. They are over £40 each in polyurethane so I’ll stick with these rubber ones. Noticed that the passenger seatbelt storage hook has fallen off and I can’t find it which is a pain.

I took the car to have four new tyres fitted today, Toyo 330s size 165/80/15 which is the stock size. I wanted to see how the car felt in it’s designed form before I make too many changes. The tyre place were a bit uncertain if the wheels would take tubeless tyres but all was OK. Apparently the valve holes are larger than normal but fortunately they had some valves on hand that fitted. It had been pointed out to me that the rear wheels were wider than the fronts and in fact this is so. The rears are 5.5J15 whereas the fronts are 4.5J15. I think the 5.5J15s were standard on some Amazons. There were no balance weights on previously and there was quite a vibration at 60mph but that has now gone. We had been having a little problem with getting the passenger seatbelt to lock in position properly and I found out that was due to the mechanism being put together slightly wrong and I fixed that today. I also changed all the sway bar bushings including those on the link rods. The link rods were a pain as the spacing tube had corroded in place and required some heat from a blow torch and some not so gentle persuasion from a copper mallet before they would come off. I used polyurethane bushings that I had bought on eBay a while ago. While at the tyre place I noticed that a bolt on the front cross member was not tight, it was showing three or four threads. This is where shims can be fitted for gross wheel geometry adjustments but of course there are none there now and I have no easy way to know if there should be any or not without getting a full diagnosis done, which I will try and wait until after all the front end suspension work is finished before I get done.
