In the midst of Adelaide’s first official heat wave in November, with scorching temperatures hovering around 40 degrees CPA Congress forged ahead last week at the Adelaide Convention Centre in South Australia.

Despite the temperatures, it was an energetic, motivational and inspirational three day program covering a range of finance, business and leadership topics from a South Australian economic update, to water resourcing and distribution, to the compelling front line stories of a journalist.

Well.

Written by Georgie Sutton. Jim Wallis is somewhat of an evangelical Christian social justice stalwar

Written by Georgie Sutton.

Jim Wallis is somewhat of an evangelical Christian social justice stalwart. As such, he’s a bit of a hero of mine! This article (link to Wallis’ blog) has been written in response to calls in the U.S. for Bush-era legislation allowing “discriminative” employment by religious organisations to be overturned. The question was posed in the Washington Post: “Should religious charities that receive federal grant money be allowed to discriminate in hiring?”

Such concerns have also been raised recently in Australia, under such front-page headlines as “Government bows to religious right“, reporting on the alleged discrimination of religious groups in who they choose to employ as well as in who qualifies for their services.

Wallis makes the point in his piece that there is a marked difference between these two categories. He argues that an organisation ought to have the right to protect its identity by hiring those who share this identity. For instance, a Christian aid organisation, in order to maintain its identity as Christian, should be allowed to employ Christians. To be compelled to employ people who do not share their beliefs would undermine the integrity of that organisation as “Christian”. By employing Christian workers, an organisation can maintain its mission, purpose and values.

The second issue – of discrimination of service – is a different one altogether, Wallis argues (and I would agree). To limit the provision of Christian services to those who share Christian beliefs is internally focused, and not at all representative of the compassion and love the organisation stands to represent. If the organisation was receiving government funding as well (as far as I know, this would be uncommon in Australia, but sounds to be widespread in the States) then this is even more important, as government services ought not be tied only to those of a certain religion.

For me, Wallis hits the nail on the head. Unless we recognise the needy in every colour and creed we are not being true to God’s call to love all of his children. It’s fine to want to protect the identity of an organisation, and a Christian charity ought to be free to share their Christ-centred and biblical reasons for doing what they do. But to limit the reach of the charity to within those who already know God would be an insufficient demonstration of the big love of our great God.

It was 8:30 pm. Fred Scribner sat in a cozy corner of a 6×6 square foot stage with his fingers

It was 8:30 pm. Fred Scribner sat in a cozy corner of a 6×6 square foot stage with his fingers emblazoned within the strings of his flamenco guitar, speakers appropriately mounted on the walls to his left and right, and about 10 people surrounded by a mellow candlelight setting and quiet conversation. The lighting was dim, the energy was calm, and the music was perfect.

“Who needs electricity? We don’t need electricity.” Scribner politely joked with Debi Ryan, General Manager of Vox Pop, about the power outage that had occurred. With his recurring Tuesday appearance, it’s no doubt their relationship is a very friendly one; he made fun of her for attempting to create a spotlight with a flashlight… to no avail.

“[It’s a] good thing I brought my battery-powered amp today,” he said to me about a half hour earlier while puffing on a cigarette before the show.

His attire was casual. Standing about 6’1 or taller, he wore a blue jacket that read “IBM” over a black button-up that overlapped a black tee, accompanied with a pair of clean, crispy blue jeans. “Lemme think,” he said before a quick inhale during our brief conversation, “probably the most significant thing me, [Little] Sammy [Davis], and the band [Midnight Slim] are known for is our long run on the Imus Show—over 20 years now.”

Don Imus, who is today most remembered for a nationally covered controversy back in 2007, was first better known for his popular show Imus in the Morning which has been running since 1971. Midnight Slim, (including Brad Scribner, John Thompson, and Randy Weimer) along with the legendary harminist Little Sammy Davis, became Imus’ regularly featured act, recognized as his “House Band” in 1991, and has been moving along strongly ever since. The band was seen on MSNBC on a daily basis and heard on the radio from coast to coast, partly in thanks to the exposure from the Imus show, mostly in great a due to their unquestionable chemistry. Their music of choice: the blues.

Scribner, born in New York City, did not begin as a blues musician. Following in the footsteps of his favorite band, The Beatles, he picked up the guitar at the age of 11 and began performing for high school crowds “within the next 6 months,” according to his online biography. By the age of 13 he had a steady gig at a country bar with a local singer named Ken Henry in Orange County, NY (where he and his family moved to about 2 years prior).

By the time he turned 18, he was playing professionally with bands, booking his own gigs, and creating master recordings. Once he reached his early 20s, he had already dabbed in music from country, rock n roll, blues, funk, and disco.

Since their critically acclaimed proof of success with the record “I Ain’t Lyin” on the prestigious Delmark Records in 1996, winning them Best Comeback Artist, Scribner more recently has been working on a new album. Opening shows for Gavin DeGraw, recording with Joey DeGraw, and continuously playing shows with Little Sammy Davis, as well as his continued appearance on Don Imus’ show keeps him busy.

Scribner’s sound, which infuses many different genres from which he has studied, is one of the reasons his music is so captivating when he plays. Whether it’s with the accompaniment of his band, or a solo cover of a Santana classic, every note seems flawless and ever lyric sounds harmonic. In a world that claims genres such as the blues to be a thing of the past, I question what could happen if we all placed down our iPods and sat in front a true musician, such as Scribner for some time.

The crowd in the coffeeshop of Vox Pop continuously poured in and out from the rain as the sound resonated from his battery-powered amp to the lackluster streets of Courtelyou Rd. His brilliance is undeniable and his personality is warming. It felt as if I was sitting amongst and speaking to a true musical legend… It’s a shame it takes some musicians a lifetime to get the spotlight they truly deserve. But since that lifetime is far from up, I’ll be waiting to see what lies ahead.

That’s what T-Mobile is asking in its latest campaign. So, what would I do with free texts for life?

That’s what T-Mobile is asking in its latest campaign. So, what would I do with free texts for life? Well, I suppose I’d, you know, carry on texting people. But without worrying about any possible charges. ‘Cos all the texts would be free. For the rest of my life.

That the right answer?

Well, yes, but it’s hardly the most fun or imaginative. T-Mobile’s agency must have countenanced such a prosaic response from the public, because the ads feature a few alternative suggestions. They’re supposedly provided by Ordinary Members of the Public.

I guess the suggestions are meant to make you stop and think to yourself ‘yeah! Now you come to mention it, I could use my free texts to do something like that! Something specific that I hadn’t previously thought of! And still haven’t, but it’s early days! I have a lifetime to think of an actual purpose for my free texts, something far more defined and ambitious than just texting people! Kyuh.

It’s so easy to criticise. Off we go then

In one of the ads, the reply to the question ‘What would you do with free texts for life?’ is ‘I got everyone together for a picnic by the river. Cancel the table for four.’

You could've picked some level ground!

Awww. Lucky them. Or unlucky them, depending on which restaurant you’d booked and whether or not the rain held off. At least they have the mandatory VW camper van standing by.

(I hope to make the ubiquity of these vehicles in ads the subject of a future blog. Please feel free to refer me to any examples.)

But the answer is hardly in the spirit of the question. Faced with the intoxicating prospect of a lifetime of free texts, all this person could do was arrange baps on a blanket for three mates. Surely that’s something he could have done before this offer came along? He seemed to have managed the restaurant booking all right.

There’s a weird thing going on with the tenses, as well. The question is ‘what would you do?’ Future. We’re asked to hypothesize, to wonder. But the answer given is retrospective. ‘I got everyone together for a picnic by the river.’ Past.

Until, strangely, the ‘Cancel the table for four’ part. Then it’s, ahem, back to the future. So you’ve had the picnic, but you still haven’t cancelled the restaurant? And you with your lifetime of free texts? Shameful.

How did the Beatles, U2 or Oasis ever get their show on the road?

One of the campaign’s other ads is quite fun too. It poses the same question, but this time we can see the respondent delivering his answer to camera, as it were.

Let’s remind ourselves of the question.

Isn't it obvious? Why, I'd...

This guy’s brainwave is:

He'd text all the musicians he knew and they'd start a superband

There are a couple of things that annoy me about this. (Not greatly, mind you. I’m only doing this to fill in time before The News comes on). One is the assumption that we’ll look at the ad and think, yeah, that’s a bit like me, I know LOADS of musicians, and they’re all waiting for me to arrange them into some sort of superband.

Another is the word superband.

A third is the idea that the only thing…the ONLY thing…that has so far stopped our lad from forming a ‘superband’ is that he didn’t have enough texts left.

It wasn’t the absence of talent or time or ambition or a common musical direction. It was a lack of texts. I find that unbelievable.

Finally, I’m in two minds about the guy in the ad. He looks friendly, honest, open and non-threatening. But then I blink and suddenly he looks like a cardie-contained mixture of the unutterably gormless and the insufferably smug.

Right, The News is about to start. See you anon.

~ ~ ~

Being very busy all the time, I haven’t had a chance to find out about the sewage plants, yet.

But I broadened my cultural horizon in the meantime anyway. As well as my life experience, by the way, after experiencing the ups and downs of life in the last fortnight.

I still spend most of my time at school. We had lots to do in the last few weeks: covering court -cour reporting, court story writing-, Shorthand (good old Teeline), the blog for school, stories. One of my fellow students got detained yesterday while hunting a scoop and taking pictures outside a prison, when he accidently stepped onto prison property…

Opposed to that, I just got a bleeding heel from hunting a story, when I stalked an Indian the other day in order to get an interview. The Indian then turned out to be Sri Lankan, who was hard to convince to have a picture taken. [His argument was that it was impossible to take a pic of him in a suit because that did not look good]

But the three-hour vox-pop was worth it – it got published as an feature article on NewsWire yesterday. - read the story here

My battle with Shorthand finally came to an end yesterday, officially. In case you do not quite remember, I’d like to recall for you quickly: I always liked Shorthand and had a lot of fun practising it – until last week when I suddenly hit the wall and just could not write anymore. My wrist was sore and I was scared I had OOS and I simply was not able to build up the speed. I managed to get 70 words per minute down, but that’s where I got stuck. Additionally, I had the most horrible migrane-like headaches (which I blame the pressure of Shorthand and the court exam for) and was continuosly over-tired. BUT – I managed to write the story, do the exam and then I hit the pillow and spend most of my weekend in bed in deeeeep sleep. And this week, I then was fresh and relaxed and finally managed to increase my writing speed up to 80 today.

Also, I got acquainted with Lola today. Lola is also called the “Typing Lady”, because she is testing us on our typing speed. Lola is extremely scary and I got the shakes when she made us type at first, but somehow I calmed down and managed to type fast enough. And now I have “Lola” by the Kinks in my mind – a cool song, but not when you always think of it combined with the vision of a crazy typing lady…

My private life is much more relaxing. I get on very well with my two flatmates and got used to the life in Wellington – although I’m still surprised when I hear the church bells ring at night (I’ll have to find out where that comes from). I know by now, that the road sweeeper is going through the street between one and two in the morning, and the rubbish bins are usually being emptied either very early in the morning or very late at night. And soon I’ll be used to turning the buttons for the heat of the stove in the wrong direction, too. *lol*

On my way to school in the mornings, I pass quite a few temptations, like…

…BOOKS – three bookshops, actually: Paper Plus (good for sales and special offers), Whitcoulls (good sorted) and Borders (the very best bookshop in the world EVER!) [and it coud have been four shops if Dymock's had not closed down]

…COOKIES at Mrs Higgins – the little shop where you get ovenfresh cookes. Yum!

… COFFEE at Starbucks or Gloria Jean’s*

*sigh*

That is why I always have to race down the street and basically run to school in order not to be tempted…

[*which is, by the way, from Oz, but I have to admit, they're coffee is still really good.]

The official street date for Harris Eisenstadt’s latest release, Canada Day (Clean Feed), is still a few weeks away, but listeners can get a live preview tonight at Clean Feed Fest IV at New York’s Cornelia Connelly Center.

Eisenstadt will be performing with his primary working group, also called Canada Day, featuring Nate Wooley (trumpet), Ellery Eskelin (sitting in for Matt Bauder on tenor saxophone), Chris Dingman (vibraphone) and Eivind Opsvik (bass).

“The cohesion of the ensemble, glued by the steady, steaming, streaming rhythms of Eisenstadt, keeps the listener focused and compelled to hear more,” writes AllMusic.com’s Michael G. Nastos. “This is a strong candidate for Top Ten status in the category of best jazz CDs of 2009.”

The group will hit the road in support of their new record, which comes out October 6th, in late October, stopping in Buffalo, NYC, Rochester and Toronto.

In the meantime, you can catch Eisenstadt in duos with Aaron Siegel (September 22nd at Death By Audio) and Sara Schoenbeck (September 26th at Vox Pop).

After years of wondering where they pick these people up from, I’ve finally been Vox Popped by Kerrang for The Get Up Kids show… And in my haste to appear cool – I come across as a one-eyed giggling schoolgirl, so pleased was I with the propensity of hits in the set. In my defense they did play Campfire Kansas – and it was f**king amazing!

Such a good evening….

Radio
Day by Day
By C.E. Butterfield

New York, Aug. 28—AP—Broadcast attention, directed to Chicago this week for the “war conference” of the National Association of Broadcasters, is expected to center to a certain extent on the future of both television and frequency modulation. Representatives of both groups, as well as many network and station officials are attending. New York has sent full delegations.

One matter due for consideration is that of ultimate wavelength allocations for these developing services. Other questions dealing with broadcasting in general and its connection with the war and the post-war era are coming up.

In the television field, the C.B.S. network, which has been advocating what it describes as “better postwar television” through the setting up of higher transmitting standards than now prevailing, has issued a new booklet in support of its stand. It calls attention to the recent proposal of the interdepartmental radio advisory committee of the federal government that television be assigned wavelengths above 450 megacycles, with channels wider than at present, and that 31 such channels be set aside.

C.B.S. says that the plan not only parallels its own suggestion “to permit pictures with twice as much detail, in black and white and in full color,” but goes somewhat further.
