Critique: Final Vox Ad

For our Vox Ad 10/5 assignment consisted of creating 10 sketches followed by five designs and one last final design for an in-house Vox ad. I created mine for VoxTalk, Vox’s online blog. Above is the final ad I came up with (though the hand is completely black in the PDF version), and below is the first draft that I blogged about previously. I made the description about VoxTalk more informative and a larger font so it is more readable. I also made the blog URL much larger so that it stands out. We were told to add the VoxTalk logo and font which I changed at the top with the “V” in a chat box and the “Vox Talk” on a platter. Check on the actual blog to see the logo in the corner. A lot of the comments on my first draft of this ad said that the background color should be different and should have some texture. Though I didn’t add texture, I did add a pattern to the background, trying to give it a tablecloth look. My original tablecloth idea was to have the checkers in white and red, but that looked too much like a picnic and wouldn’t match the “server’s hand.” I also received feedback about the shape of the hand and that it looked a little bit awkward, so I played with it to make it look more realistic. Overall, I think if I would have added a texture over the pattern it would have had a more complete look, but I was happy with the progress I made from my drafts and sketches.

Cheating on you

It’s been so long, personal website. I’m sorry about that, but my job as an Insight department editor at Vox Magazine has sort-of taken over all my free time … and I’m cheating on you. It’s not you, it’s me.
You see, I’ve been blogging for Vox’s blog VoxTalk. I know we had discussed me blogging exclusively with your interphase, but that commitment was just too much. VoxTalk, just, understands me, and helps me connect to readers in Columbia more effectively and frequently. How frequent has it been? Oh, once a week since January 2012. I’m so sorry! I couldn’t help it, it’s just to fun. I have this weekly blog that I do called Trending Topics: This Week in Tweets that covers local news by highlighting local tweets.

Two of my favorite things I’ve done for VoxTalk are a post on 5 things you didn’t know about Missouri zoos and even some tips for Spring cleaning. No, of course they’re not better than the slideshow I did of last summer’s trip to Europe or how I blogged all last summer in Belgium. I’m not saying that at all. I just, can’t help myself. I promise I’ll post more content after I graduate in May. How long exactly? Is 36 days specific enough for you?
