A few hours ago, I returned back to campus from my last break as a college student. Come December, I’ll be a graduate, and heading out to the real world, which, as of quite recently, could be very rewarding.

Tuesday: night when I got home, I spent the night at my friend Travis’s house. I learned how to insert hyperlinks and add my site into search engines! yay! I just checked out google, and my site was there! I obviously need to work on adding more tags and more posts to get more views to my page, but at least it’s now out there on the internet, where people will hopefully find me.
Then we watched the end of GoodFellas, which is DEFF a movie I need to watch and pay attention to from beginning to end, cause from what I’ve seen, it was fucking awesome.

Wednesday: It rained, all day, but I had a very eventful and productive day. Travis took me to the eye doctor (I need a new prescription for contacts) and the people there were SUPER nice. As I am writing this, I am remembering that I need to call them back with information about my last prescription, so the doctor can finalize my script, and I can get new contacts! After my appointment, which only lasted maybe an hour, Travis and I went to the used book store in the plaza. He score some great deals on books about computers. I purchased a small book, for only $1.32, on circus themed paintings, which I’m going to give to a friend of mine. All of her work lately has had circus elements in it, and it made me think of her, so I’m going to give it to her.
That night, I went bar hopping with my friend Erin, which was pretty exciting.

At one of the bars, we watched her brother play in his band. I knew that he played guitar, but this was the first time I’d seen him play in his band. The lead singer reminded me of an ex/good friend of mine, and you could tell him and the bassist were brothers.  It was like “heavy metal/screamo/hardcore/rock” night, so if you’re into that music, you should check them out HERE. DRH is the name, and if my school was more into that kind of music, I could hook them up with a show or two, but frankly, it’s all reggae and jam bands up here at GMC. Although, I have some connections in the field, and I’m going to do what I can to find them some shows.

Thursday: Happy Turkey Day! Wow, and what a Turkey day it was..This year, it was just my mom, my brother, his friend Mark, my mom’s friend Terry, and myself. My mom bought Turkey dinner this year from Market Basket, and for $55, you get thanksgiving in a box: Turkey, mashed potatoes, squash, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, and even rolls and a pumpkin pie. Everything was surprisingly pretty good, minus the potatoes. They were just a little funky to me..

So I experienced a first that day.  I got home early in the morning, feeling pretty good, and wanted to sleep for a little but before turkey dinner. As the morning hours passed, I just felt worse and worse. I knew I was going to have to throw up, I just knew it. I really didn’t want to make myself do it, and I didn’t have to. I sat down at the table, and tried to eat, and my mom noticed how sick I looked. “Honey, you are so pale.” I told her “I know, I don’t feel good at all, I think I’m going to go upstairs and do it.” I left the table, and as soon as I got to the bathroom, it happened. I felt SOO much better, and went back downstairs, ate dinner with my family, and went back to bed.

Friday: I’m officially an auntie! Welcome to the world Trystan Scott Ouimette. He’s 3 months premature, and only 2 lbs, 1 oz, but he’s doing very well! My brother sent me a picture of him on my phone. He’s got the longest legs I have ever seen on a baby that tiny.

Other than the birth of my nephew, my day really sucked. I was in some kind of vehicle from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m.

Although, I spent the night at Travis’s house, and my dearest friend Mia, who currently lives in Idaho, called me at 2 a.m., raving about how she found the PERFECT job for me! (more to come on this topic)

Saturday:  I got home early afternoon, and got some things done, like laundry and packing and cleaning up my room. I didn’t want to rush around Sunday morning, packing things up for my big adventure back to VT.

Sunday: I hung out with my mom for the afternoon before I headed back up to VT with Michelle. We left at about 3, and got back a little after 7. It was a really nice trip back up, with Dunkie’s ice coffees, and a beautiful, long lasting sunset, and some great tunes on the radio.

I didn’t get to take as many pictures as I would have liked, because as always, things didn’t work out like planned, and I left my camera at Erin’s for a day, but I do have some good shots that will be posted shortly, and hopefully people will start to check out my page.

As I sit here typing this, we are in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont in our little cabin. With our newest computer battery, we have the ability to bring some modern life into the woods. Though we are enjoying the “simple life” very much, we really love to be able to cozy up in front of the fire and watch a film! Jon also has worked some magic, and ran a long cord down here so that we can also have phone access! Keeping our fingers crossed that the line stays unharmed through the winter, we are hoping to enjoy some chats with loved ones living elsewhere.

We have gotten to know our “housemates” better since we have sharing the continued house up the path (where we go for running water and to cook and to just hang out). They are all great, and we are looking forward to spending more winter days with them. We have already established that games, hikes in the woods, sharing meals, playing music, and laughing are all pretty great things, so that’s a good start. The four year old also brings lots of energy and smiles to the environment- he is always up for a walk or some kind of playing!

COLLAPSE!

Enjoying the SUN when it is out, we are learning more how to use and conserve the power we receive from the bright fireball. We have also continued preparing WOOD for the winter months, and have gathered lots and lots of kindling! Another thing we have managed to stock up on is GREASE! There was enough gathered in the past couple of months for us to maintain a full tank, and now that the cold air is coming, we are getting all the use we can out of the veggie oil system before it just gets too darn cold to run. Speaking of the Grease Beast brings us to our next post…

Be it civilians, martyrs or officials from the army, navy and the police force.
I, like many other "Dreamers of Peace" salute them and pray to the Almighty to put their souls to rest and bestow peace, love and brotherhood amongst all the world citizens and instill sensibilities to those who think otherwise.

CODED MICROCHIPS implanted in every person in the country would tie all of us into a master computer that could track anyone down at any moment, and plans for such a system are already under way whether you like it or not!

The secret scheme is being touted as a service for the protection of the people by high government officials, but some insiders who object to the move say it’s just another way for Big Brother to control its subjects.

Transmitters

“Top-level national security agents are trying to convince sources in the Bush Administration to begin the project in which every man, woman and child will be implanted with a tiny transmitter,” claims Davis Milerand, a critic of government intervention who says he has received leaked information from inside sources.

“They’re trying to say this will be a good way for authorities to quickly track down missing persons and children, as well as criminals and spies.

Injections

“But with the astounding technology of today, everything about you could be contained in one tiny microchip, which would be connected to a government computer.”

“Any government agency will know what any person has done and is doing at any time.”

Other sources say the tiny transmitters can be injected painlessly from a tiny gun in humans without them even knowing it through a nationwide vaccination program.

“All the government would have to do is make up something like the swine flu vaccine,” Milerand says.

“Imagine if they said there was a vaccine for AIDS.  People would rush in droves to get shots.

“The doctors themselves may not even know what they’re injecting.  They could be told the microchips are genetic implants that reprogram the body into fighting disease.”

He adds:  ”The program would require all federal, state and local government workers to undergo the injections.”

“It would only be a matter of time before everyone is implanted with a microchip, a slave to the government.”

“Keep the Fire Burning!” – 2010 is coming!

Hey Cheesenerds,

Sorry it has been a while since my last update.  I have tons of good footage and just no time to post it.

In this episode I have the great honor of having on my Mom and my beloved/hilarious 92 year old jewish/WWII veteran Grandfather.  We trekked down to good ol’ St Petersburg (seriously folks, the place is stuck in the style of 1967 – it’s almost MadMen retro cool!)

I had bought a few cheeses at the local farmers market near my house…yes I actually flew cheese to Florida for my lame blog.

Here’s what we noshed on:

1.Maplebrook Farm Mozzarella – So this is a locally made Mozzarella, from a farm in Bennington, VT.  Yes it is that stupid beautiful there:

A lot of twitter folks and grocery store folks all seemed very excited for this cheese to be in stock – I guess it comes along only for a little while a year. More of their backstory here…It’s a tasty and mild cheese- definitely needed to be eaten with something else. My grandfather said it tasted like (horrors!) a regular Kraft’s single.

Well at least the dog approved.

2. Grafton Village Cheddar with Sage.  Ok – who knew – My  mom hates sage! Doh!  As usual the Grafton Village Cheddar was fabulous – see our review in episode 7.  It was filled with Sage though and had a weird, but kinda cool sagey aftertaste.  Not dog approved.

On a jewish side note – after googling this they do carry it at Zabar’s! Otherwise known as mecca for jewish food in the upper west side NYC…

3.Great Hill Blue.  Go. Buy. This. Now.  Excellent Excellent blue – mild, thick with butterfat, raw cow blue aged 120 days. Made in Marion, Massachusetts from a 100 year old farm. More about the cheese here.  This was the best blue we’ve ever had on the show.  BEST. EVER.  and it’s freakin’ gorgeous to look at!

And the coolest part – it was the first blue cheese my grandfather had ever had.

How awesome is that.

I have had many more experiences since then / some just as dramatic / some not / but every one as powerful / sitting on a log on a cold mountain night with Gipsy, my brilliant & gifted  friend / fire crackling and nose running / the smell of wood smoke, intoxicating and mesmerizing as it climbed its invisible ladder upward / dancing / to meet the stars that literally made the sky shimmer / or sitting on top of Celebration Rock / which is / in my book / Heaven on Earth / or when I dance / defying gravity and all its laws and expectations / putting the perfect piece of sushi in my mouth / allowing Umami to take over and combine the flavors, the atmosphere, the company and the celebration of creativity and friendship.

Embrace each morning’s mystery

Umami / all that is ordinary and expected give way to extraordinary and surprising / resting in a perfect state of complete surrender;  to all that was, is and ever will be / all these things lending their own exquisite voice to the harmonious sound that defies human understanding / transcending to a place that simply cannot be described / only experienced / share your umami moments with me / kai

A rainy day in Middlebury today. In fact, it’s been predicted to rain all weekend. So I’m putting my feet up, have VPR on the computer and picked up a book that a customer recommended. What’s the book? Sing at My Wake, by Jo Sinclair. I know he told me why I should read it but I don’t remember. It’s on the top of my pile of customer recommendations. “You can’t sell this until you read it!” I get that a lot. Well, there are SO many books which is why I enjoy the suggested titles. And they generally turn out to be great reads. I do have the latest Dan Brown to read. It’s being passed around my family and I’m fourth on the list. And, I have to confess, I ordered the new Sarah Palin. Say what you want. I don’t care. I admire her totally. Yes, totally! Politics aside, she has stirred the nation and I think that is cool. And all you women out there – isn’t that what the feminine movement was all about – women given the freedom to BE, DO what they are passionate about? Oh, yeah! You go girl!

Já tinha esquecido dessa campanha do Giraffas que me rendeu muitas risadas até me lembrarem hoje. Não acho a forma mais adequada de se vender “comida”, ainda mais pro target que eu imagino que a rede de fast food quer atingir. De qualquer forma vale a pena conferir o VT novamente e dar risada. it’s football time, and this season has definitely provided a few good opportunities to do some Virginia Tech “cooking”  – which I’ve decided to post since I had such a difficult time finding examples online when I took on a few of these projects.

here are the “hokie bird” cookies, cookie cutter purchased at the Tech Bookstore:

definitely the most difficult – and in order to get the maroon frosting that dark, I had to use so much food coloring gel that it stained your mouth.  but they were cute.

This batch also included a few of the more basic “VT” cookies:

For the Tech/Miami tailgate in Blacksburg, I went with the basic VT cookies but this time I used maroon and orange M&Ms for decoration rather than frosting:

Not the greatest picture and the heat of the baking cracked the M&Ms, but you get the idea.  I hope.

And now the fun part… Virginia Tech Jello shots!  For the first tailgate, I started off easy – black cherry and orange layers:

But now for tailgate #2, it’s getting serious.  Five layers – maroon, white, orange, white, maroon.

Yes, my parents are proud.

Woo  – can’t wait for tomorrow!  Let’s go Hokies, beat Maryland!!!!

Bad memories of the bear market and frustration over low rates of return have many investors looking to purchase real estate from their retirement savings. Many investors are using their retirement funds from IRAs to buy real estate.

Yes it’s true. You can buy real estate property through funds in your IRA but you need to know the transaction is very complex and not as easy as you might think. The numerous rules and the likely hood of miss-handling the transaction can disqualify your tax-deferred status and force you to pay tax on its full value plus penalties. If you want to invest in real estate in your IRA you need to exercise caution and find the proper guidance with a real estate broker and investment counselor.

Owning property inside an IRA forgoes the traditional tax advantages of investing in real estate. You can’t deduct property taxes or mortgage interest, and you can’t use depreciation. When you sell the property, a traditional IRA turns profit into ordinary income rather than capital gains. Also, your IRA must have enough spare cash to pay such property-related expenses as maintenance costs, taxes and management fees because all income must flow into the IRA and all expenses be paid out of it.

1. You need to identify a property you want.
2. Next you have to find an IRA custodian that allows real estate investments. There are only a few IRA custodians who can handle this transaction nationwide. Your local bank or lender will not be qualified to do this.

An example is taking money from your IRA and using it to purchase a single-family home. Let’s say you have to spend $15,000 to remodel the house and then decide to sell it within a year for a $20,000 profit. The remodeling costs came out of your IRA and the profit on the sale of the property goes back in along with the principle withdrawal. In another case a buyer used $50,000 in an IRA as a down payment on a six-unit apartment complex. The rental income flows back into the IRA. Because the investment was an apartment building or commercial space, you’ll need to hire a property manager to collect rents and maintain the building. Depending on the IRA custodian, you may have to pay a transaction fee every time you authorize a check to pay a plumber or your property taxes.

This touches on just a few of the many scenarios that can apply to purchasing real estate through and IRA. These types of transactions are possible but very complex. Do not rush into this process without the property guidance from qualified professionals.

I won! I won!!

I never win anything. Well, let me clarify: I don’t enter contests much and I don’t play the lottery or gamble. Hence: I don’t win much! Recently my luck has changed! I twitter quite a bit, and follow a wonderful restaurant located in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont called Claire’s. They recently held a twitter contest. Twitter what you love about Claire’s and win a T-shirt! Full disclosure: I have never eaten at Claire’s. Heck, I have never even been to Hardwick, Vermont! But, I admire what they, as a restaurant, stand for and I could use a sporty new addition to my wardrobe!!

Cannot remember what I wrote, but it worked I was a winner!!!

Claire’s is a farm to table restaurant emphasizing local and sustainable produce, meats, dairy and artisanal products. Since opening in October 2008, they have garnered much praise and many reviews from the likes of The New York Times and Yankee Magazine! Chef Steven Obranovich is always looking to see what will inspire his weekly menu. This season you will notice Vermont Cranberries in heavy use. Yes, indeed I said Vermont Cranberries!!! Who would have thunk it?! Had no idea there were cranberry bogs in Northern Vermont, but low and behold, Vermont Cranberry Company is growing, harvesting, processing and selling cranberries and cranberry juice all over Vermont and beyond! Chef Steven and his staff use the cranberries in their tart Cranberry Apple Chutney and the juice in their Cranberry Margaritas.
