Un des rouages les plus fous de l’économie mondiale vient de se gripper.

L’émirat de Dubaï vient d’annoncer qu’il ne rembourserait pas une partie de son énorme dette, entraînant un mouvement de panique sur les places financières.

Dubaï, depuis quelques années, s’était lancé dans une course à la démesure avec l’espoir de compenser par le tourisme de luxe le fait qu’il ne détenait ni gaz ni pétrole dans son sous-sol.

Créant à l’échelle d’un pays entier ce qui ressemble bien à une pyramide de Ponzi géante, Dubaï s’était mis à construire avec frénésie des châteaux sur son sable, irrigué par le flot apparemment inépuisable des pétro-dollars de son riche voisin. L’émirat s’est ainsi couvert d’hôtels aux innombrables étoiles et aux immenses piscines réfrigérées - l’eau de la mer étant trop chaude pour que l’on s’y baigne. Il s’est doté du plus grand centre commercial du monde – pour une population de 1 200 000 individus dont une bonne partie de travailleurs immigré sous-payés - et d’un centre d’affaires de 500 gratte-ciels…

Le symbole le plus absurde de cette démarche fut, on s’en souvient, cette gigantesque boule à neige posée en plein désert, cette piste de ski artificielle dont le seul refroidissement devait engloutir la consommation de pétrole d’une petite ville française.

Aujourd’hui, tout cela vient de s’arrêter brutalement. L’érection de la tour la plus haute du monde est stoppée en plein élan, l’île artificielle en forme de palmier n’attire pas autant qu’on l’espérait.

Contraint de courir follement pour ne pas tomber, Dubaï vient de trébucher. Et d’illustrer de façon violente une règle qui s’applique, de façon plus générale, aux marques de luxe : celle qui veut que tout prestige, toute image, tout positionnement se doit de reposer sur une réalité. Pour les marques, elle se nomme savoir-faire, qualité, rareté ou intégrité. Pour un pays, elle se nomme climat, histoire, divertissements, paysages naturels, ouverture culturelle…

Cette règle, les grandes marques de luxe dont la longévité vient, mieux encore que le profit, conforter le statut, ne l’oublient jamais. Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Chanel, ces maisons n’ont cessé de rester fidèles à leurs valeurs fondatrices.

Elles n’ont jamais oublié que sans cette réalité, l’illusion finit tôt ou tard par se dissiper.

Dans le désert, on nomme cela un mirage.
