Joanna Newsom in Armani; image courtesy of wmagazine.com

So W just dropped news that Joanna Newsom has a proper follow-up to Ys and the subsequent Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band EP, the particulars to which twentyfourbit.com elaborated, all of which I know about thanks to GRCA’s Emily Marks.

Now, I’m not sure why it’s taking her so long to make another full-length, which I’m assuming Drag City is releasing. Some might speculate that her hiatus might be due to her relationship with SNL’s Andy Samberg. And while I have no problem with giving Samberg a good feminist hard time, I’m not entirely sure if her absence can be attributed to playing house. With recent appearances in trendy fashion magazines like W, much as she did earlier in her career with publications like PAPER, I think it might have something to do with playing dress-up.

The boys of Lonely Island with their dates at the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards; image courtesy of aceshowbiz.com

Yikes! I realize those last two sentences might have infantilized the singer, something choruses of music critics do any time they call her voice “child-like.” What I mean is that Newsom has been mingling in the fashion world. Perhaps it’s no surprise that a long-haired, full-lipped, leggy white lady recording artist can get designers to take notice. However, I find it particularly interesting who she’s syncing up with, how this might help construct her image, and what all this might suggest about the commodification of indie. Because she’s not just putting on Armani. She’s friends with Rodarte, waxing pretentious about the collaborative process and wearing their designs to in-the-know, downtown fêtes.

Joanna Newsom representing Rodarte's Fall 2008 collection; image courtesy of obsoleteantics.blogspot.com

Sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, who created a label honoring their mother’s maiden name, Rodarte, have made quite a splash in the fashion world and on the red carpet over the past few years. They seem like cool ladies with whom I’d definitely want to watch some movies. Yet I’m still on the fence about their decidely avant-garde design aesthetic. I almost like a lot of it, but it gets way too drapey and twee at times — particularly when factoring in the cost.

Natalie Portman and Reese Witherspoon’s dresses for the 2009 Oscars were vivid shades of pink and blue, but the knotty bodice patterns and woozy detailing made me a bit nauseous. Similar situation with the dress Tilda Swinton wore for a premiere of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – loved the color palette, wanted to rip off the sleeves. And in theory, I like the Rodarte sweater Kristen Stewart wore in last January’s Teen Vogue, but in actual practice, I have a hunch that I could find some moth-eaten angora free of charge if I just brave the family attic.

Cute sweater or is Kristen Stewart just wearing the empress's new cardigan?; image courtesy of flickr.com

That said, I like that Rodarte work with retailers like the Gap and Target to make their clothes more accessible and affordable. And they have made some killer, coveted items that I’d snap up if I had the money.

Reese Witherspoon's minty fresh Rodarte minidress; image courtesy of girladvantage.com

Michelle Obama wore a 2007 Rodarte dress to meet with Queen Rania in April 2009; image courtesy of paulrfrost.blogspot.com

But Newsom and Rodarte seems an interesting match. Though musicians pairing up with designers is nothing new (see also: Cher and Bob Mackie, Madonna and Jean-Paul Gaultier, Courtney Love and Christina Aguilera representing Versace, M.I.A. representing Marc Jacobs), something seems pretty perfect with the alignment here. Perhaps with the three ladies’ talk about collaborative processes, we’ll get to see a Newsom-designed collection, as we did with Chloë Sevigny’s 2008 collection for Opening Ceremony.

Chloë Sevigny models her own designs for Opening Ceremony, convincing this blogger that t-shirts can be successfully paired with strapless dresses; image courtesy of stylefrizz.com

This pairing might be read alongside what commercial ventures Newsom has entertained. In an era that has seen many independent artists rely upon advertising and television shows to get their music heard, Newsom’s music has been featured in several places. Often she has elected that her music be used in documentary work. However, The Milk-Eyed Mender’s “Sprout and the Bean” was featured in Victoria’s Secret’s Dream Angels ad campaign. Note that her voice is not heard in this spot.

Or it could be that a dress is just a dress. Which is fine too. But while I’m excited about hearing Newsom’s new album, I’ll have two labels on my mind when it comes out: Drag City and Rodarte.

Read this and then take a look at the photo, then, ‘appreciate’ who was going about doing good deeds and showing genuine care and concern. (We didn’t see this in the media either, did we!)

A man had a TV on in his office when the news of the military base shootings came on. The husband of one of his employees was stationed there. He called her into his office and the minute he told her what was going on, she got a text message from her husband saying, “I am okay.” The cell phone started ringing right after that. It was an ER nurse. She said, “I’m the one who just sent you a text, not your husband.” She thought the message would be comforting, but she immediately knew she had to let the wife know what was going on. She said, “I am sorry but your husband has been shot 4 times and he is in surgery.” The wife left Southern Clinic in Dothan, Alabama and drove all night. Miraculously, here is the photo I just received from my brother that was taken today in the hospital room. He is awake and will recover. His wife, who lives in Dothan, made it to Ft. Hood about the time he was waking up. Thought I’d share this great outcome.

“By the power of greyskull!” Ah, the famous refrain of one of my childhood heroes. He-man. What a guy. I recently re-watched some of the good old innocent fun that, as a child of the 80’s I readily absorbed, and was admittedly a little taken aback by the tight pants, over-muscley torso and lack of an interesting storyline, but I was only 8 at the time…

He-man is a good example of stories we tell each other about power – especially male power. Problems in the world are caused by baddies; problems in the world are solved by the goodies, with right combination of magic, muscle and morality. From He-man to the A-Team (don’t tell me BA Baracus didn’t use magic to make tanks in a cave out of an empty box and some sticky-backed plastic), from James Bond to Spiderman, to we reassure ourselves that magic, muscle and black-and-white morality are enough.

magic, muscle and morality

Last Sunday we celebrated the day called Christ the King. Just before we begin the year again at Advent (it’s not Christmas yet!), we remember that at all times and in all places, whether it seems like it or not, Christ is King. King is a kind of out-dated term, it doesn’t mean much to many of us. But in previous eras it has carried a similar meaning to He-man - a bit of magic (with God on our side and a quick Mass before battle…), a lot of muscle (yours or your soldiers), and a healthy dose of morality (we are the good guys…) will win us the war/the Empire/some oil.

This connects with a film I watched yesterday – “W” – looking at the life of George W Bush up to 2004. Magic, muscle and morality are still the ways we humans go about demonstrating authority, commanding allegiance, and wielding power.

So how does Christ the King compare with these understandings of authority, allegiance and power? Reading the account leading up to and including the trial, not well. His authority was stripped by the Jewish leaders at his mock trial; allegiance to him was fading as the disciples confidence was shattered. And his power? He spoke of a kingdom from another place, but it didn’t save him.

The human mind, maybe especially the male human mind, doesn’t sit comfortably with power withheld. Authority should be wielded, allegiance commanded, power demonstrated. That is what society sees as ‘masculine’ (technically it is called hegemonic masculinity. So now you know.). This image of the The Arkville Minotaur on Dave’s District Blog (winner of Best Christian Blog) goes a long way to demonstrating this in a direct and uncompromising way.

by the powers of grey stone

There is another way. Jesus was challenged in the desert, before his ministry began, to go ‘in with a bang’ and shake things up with a bit of magic, muscle and dubious morality. Demonstrate authority by turning stones into bread; throw himself off a cliff to force the angels to show their allegiance to him; bow down to the devil in return for unlimited power. Instead he withheld. And in Luke, the first thing that happens when he triumphantly returns to his home town to begin his ministry? He is rejected. Great. Nice one Jesus.

Jesus repeated this throughout his ministry, carefully choosing when to exercise authority, to command allegiance and to use his power. At his trial he could have saved himself; on the cross he was taunted about that very thing. “If you are who you say you, save yourself!” It takes a strong man to resist that challenge. Yet he did. Jesus showed the flip-side to our usual human (and male-dominated?) understanding of authority, allegiance and power.

His authority is not that of master and servant, ruler and slave, priest and lay, but as friend (I no longer call you servants but friends…).

Allegiance to him comes not through fear, as Pilate’s did, but love (as the Father loves me, so I love you…).

His power is not demonstrated from ‘up there’, but is given to us, ‘in here’, as the Holy Spirit lives in us (you will do even greater things than me…).

That is a challenge to us. Especially us men. Meanwhile, let’s be grateful that Christ is King, and not one of us.

Who is Wyndsong ?

A few days ago I presented ya the girl who won the “Rikko Leg’s Contest 2009″ Zulieka.

I will show ya now who took the second place.

She won cause she did write down a description of her leg that made me kaugh a lot (see below)

Wyndsong’s participation :

“Please be advised that the following description is extremely provocative and may cause spontaneous combustion!

Well, let me just say that few people are actually allowed to see my legs, because when they do, they cannot resist touching them, or hugging them, or licking them, or any of a number of things which I shall not mention as I am a lady of fine repute.

Let me start at my toes, as they are as an appetizer to the main feast, which are my legs.
They are fine and dainty toes, exquisitely formed and do not resemble piggies in any way, unless you know of any piggies that are so beautiful and perfect that they take your breath away.
I paint the toenails with a golden-tinted polish and they glow in candlelight like small gems.
My feet are gently arched and are so soft that you might mistake the skin for butterfly wings. My ankles are slender and gracefully formed, having never suffered any injuries as many ankles do in the course of life.

And now, for the pièce de résistance: My legs!

My legs have caused many a man to stop in their tracks, forget what they were talking about, sit with jaw dropped or crash their cars into oncoming traffic. They are about a kilometre long, calves perfectly in proportion to thighs, knees that one would want to nibble. (That would make me giggle of course, tee hee!) My skin is almost flawless except for a giant scar running the full length of one thigh! JUST KIDDING!!! No scars. No unsightly veins. Just an expanse of smooth, tanned skin that when caressed gets sweet little tiny goosebumps all over it. I never wear stockings, as I like my legs to breathe and feel the freedom of the open air under a skirt or dress. I prefer a stiletto sandal as they give my legs beautiful form and my lovely toes are visible.

Sooooo . . . are there any other details you require? Please let me know! “

O Pop Bit deixa as duas versões.

Back in the days of our grandparents and even for many of our parents, a career was something you did from the time you got out of college until you retired. Very few people even thought about switching careers, but these days, it’s far more common. In fact, as various industries drop in popularity, more and more people are leaving what they may have considered to be solid jobs and are looking for new careers.

Starting a new career doesn’t have to be a bad thing. In fact, it can be exhilarating and interesting, as well as providing a better income. Why you are moving in a new direction will vary depending on your situation… some people make the change because they lose their job, others are bored and want something more interesting, and still others need to earn more money for one reason or another. Here are some tips to make the transition easier.

Have a strategy. Knowing which career field you want to enter is just the beginning, you’ll also need to know how to get there before you leave your old job behind. This means planning out how to break into your chosen path. You may need to take some courses, gain certifications or get some practical experience under your belt before you’re ready to start applying for jobs.

Network. It’s amazing what the power of networking can accomplish. You never know, the guy you talk to each morning at the bagel shop might have a sister-in-law at a firm you want to work for. Never underestimate talking to people and making connections, both online and off, it could come in very handy.
Rewrite your resume. The one you have might have been perfect for the career you are currently in, but you’ll need to make sure that you update it for the new one. This might mean putting in some jobs you left off before, removing others that are no longer relevant or it might mean that you need to redo the entire thing.

Stay flexible. When you switch industries, you can’t expect to keep your status. Chances are you’ll be working your way up from the bottom again and being flexible about salary, location and other factors will help you do just that. You’re far more likely to get the position if you leave your preconceptions behind and go with the flow.

Get some experience. If you’re making a drastic change, you will have far better luck getting a job if you already have some experience. This might mean volunteering, working weekends in your chosen industry or taking on a position as an intern to get a good start. This can go on your resume and will help future employers see that you are dedicated to the new career path.

Research your new area. There’s no point in leaving one job behind only to move to another that you detest just as much, so take the time to research your career options and figure out which one will work best for you. Don’t stick to just reading about it… talk to people who work in the industry to find out what they like and dislike about it.

Changing careers, no matter what age, can be done. It isn’t always easy, but if you are truly unhappy in your current work situation or have lost your job, then it’s a leap well worth making. Just be sure to research your new industry carefully and to select one that utilizes your skills and interests.

Caro, caro, caro, petrolio?

When I summon up an image of my father, I see a fragile man, his frame slightly stooped, listing, afflicted by the back problems that landed him in bed for a month in the fall of 1997. The pain was debilitating, the best remedy walking. My father walked a lot. He walked around the neighborhood. He walked to Harvard Square and took the #1 bus down Mass. Ave. every morning; he often got off at the bridge across the Charles and walked the final mile or so to Berklee. I used to enjoy taking my lunch break at that bridge. I would get a falafel sandwich from the truck by MIT, sometimes with hummous, or with hummous and grape leaves, and I would sit on a bench facing across the river toward Boston, toward the skyline that my father approached every workday for twenty-seven years. Twenty-seven is also my age. And I find myself walking a lot as well, walking in my father’s footsteps now that A. and I have settled into an apartment just blocks from the one I grew up in. She and I tend to walk briskly, but my father didn’t. When we lived on Royal Ave., I would sometimes see him wandering down the sidewalks or paused, tilting his head quizzically to ponder a sparrow or an ornate molding or a crooked street sign.

We took one walk together during the Royal period, only one, into Harvard Square. We had an objective, but I don’t remember it. Given the state of the Square, it could only have been Harvard Bookstore. We stopped often to rest. In particular I remember one wrought-iron fence where my father stretched his back. This was after his second diagnosis, the terminal one, and though we talked about me, not him, about my foolish and to-be-short-lived venture into financial advising, I realized then that his cancer did nothing to alleviate the back pain from which he suffered. It was as though I had let myself stop caring about his back, as if it made no sense to be concerned with a chronic pain when a malevolent growth would eventually kill him. Looking back now, I see the amount of pain my father must have been in, not just the physical pain but also the pain of impending mortality. And with that I can understand why he withdrew into himself, why he arose earlier and earlier, filled his shelves with more and more books, steeped himself in classical music through headphones absurdly large, retired shortly after dinnertime, by which point his mood tended to sour. He coped by turning inward. I didn’t understand any of this then, and it is mostly conjecture on my behalf now. I can’t ask him, after all. On that walk together we did not talk about my father because we never were able to talk about him. We didn’t discuss what must have been foremost in both of our minds. That is how we got along; oddly enough, we understood each other well.

When he died and we pulled out the photo albums, I was stunned by the man I saw: tall and trim, upright, dark-haired, handsome, relaxed. This was the physical father that I had forgotten about, the one who taught me to ride a bike on the paths of the Harvard Divinity School and pitched baseballs to me in the basketball court of the Y field. Where had he gone from my memory? After my father died, I feared that I would only see the bedridden man, in a heavily medicated sleep during his final days, a massive tumor, which had for so long been just a word, an intangible thing inside him, now swelling relentlessly outward from his neck in an awful, swollen mass. I yearned for those younger images of him. Still, I could not rid myself of this one for a long time. In the intervening years, though, it has faded. Instead, I’ve settled on another. It isn’t the strong, fit father, but it is my dad at peace on the bank of Pilgrim Pond. Memory doesn’t supply this particular image, but the image evokes memories. I keep the framed photo close by. In the early-morning light my father holds a fishing rod. Standing at one end of the bank, he can see down the length of the shallow, oval-shaped pond, separated from the sea by a narrow strip of dune. He taught me to fish there, and we spent every morning and most evenings two weeks each year catching bullheads and perch, crappies and sunfish, the wary carp and elusive pickerel, in later years largemouth bass as well. Cardinals adorned the mornings and swallows the evenings. Snapping turtles lurked in the mud. Even the Pilgrims spent a night there before sinking an iron cauldron and heading up the coast to Plimouth. The pond has history, and for me the photograph conjures up everything magical about the place and our times there.
