Pues no hay plazo que no se cumpla.
Con ésta entrada damos inicio a mis posts de fin de año donde enlistaré los exponentes de mis hobbies que más me marcaron, gustaron o quitaron mi tiempo durante la década que termina. En retrospectiva, ha sido una década bastante divertida. Todo mundo suele añorar la década de su infancia, y la mía fue durante los noventa. Sin embargo, los “dosmiles” (¿cómo traduciré “oughties”?) tambien fueron muy divertidos.

Voy a empezar con los discos de la década a mi parecer. No puedo decir que es una lista subjetiva del todo, pues las reglas que puse dejaron fuera muchísimos álbumes que me gustan mucho y que considero muy buenos (como Speakerboxxx/The Love Below de Outkast o Extraordinary Machine de Fiona Apple o Auf der Maur de MAdM, o Justified de Justin Timberlake –sí, me gusta cuando el pop está bien hecho). Pero creo que dio oportunidad a que fuera más o menos variada (no mucho rap, ni mucho indie, ni demasiado rock, y dejé fuera al nu-metal de finales de los 90-principios del nuevo milenio). Estoy bastante satisfecho con ella, tomando en cuenta que mis gustos musicales shiftearon mucho del 2000 (a mis tiernos 13 años) para acá. Así que, empecemos con la lista regresiva, que estaré alternando con las demás listas.

#25.- The Marshall Mathers LP (Eminem, 2000)

A pesar de los muchos lanzamientos de Jay-Z o Kanye West que, incluso a mí que no me gusta el rap, me parecieron buenos discos (y el ya mencionado doble álbum de Outkast), creo que el disco de rap definitivo de la década fue justamente el que Eminem lanzó a principios de la misma. La controversia por canciones homofóbicas o misóginas ya todos la conocen, pero el disco termina por definir el estilo característico de Eminem, que no llega a cansar ni hartar (al menos no cuando salió). Escuchándolo de nuevo, veo que ha pasado la pueba del tiempo exitosamente, y es un perfecto retrato de lo que el género vivía a principios de la década – feudos, rivalidades entre disqueras y falta de creatividad. Haciendo burla o rindiendo tributo a otros géneros con los samples de sus tracks, The Marshall Mathers LP es la obra cumbre del rapero que durante la década seguría dando de qué hablar, pero no llegaría a ésta calidad.

#24.- Four on the Floor (Juliette and the Licks, 2006/2007)

Una de las mujeres más fascinantes del mundo no sólo de la actuación, sino del rock (lo de “fascinante” me deja perplejo, porque me encanta y estoy perfectamente consciente de que no es el prototipo clásico de mujer “guapa”), Juliette Lewis y su ahora extinta banda The Licks vinieron a callarme la boca y sacaron éste engañoso disco a finales del 2006 en el Reino Unido y principios del ‘07 de éste lado del charco. Engañoso porque los artistas de las repúblicas hermanas de la TV y el Cine que buscan incursionar en la música, tienen resultados infructuosos por default (hay algunos que se salvan, como Lared Joto. Ejem, Jared Leto). Sin embargo, éste ejemplo del indie/garage rock que invadió la década es el mejor disco de la banda; Dave Grohl grabó la batería, pero no es un detalle que se note demasiado. La energía impresa por Lewis como frontwoman es de destacar, nuevamente, por el antecedente de actores tocando instrumentos o cantando. Muy recomendable, aunque cabe mencionar que sí hay que tener cierto gusto por el género.

#23 – As Daylight Dies (Killswitch Engage, 2006)

Killswitch Engage lanzó dos discos que me gustaron mucho: The End of Heartache del 2004 y éste, que incluyo en la lista porque es el que más me gusta de los dos. Aunque As Daylight Dies sigue más o menos el mismo tono que discos anteriores, se puede decir que es el más accesible al aficionado nuevo, y es en el que se toman menos en serio. No sé si sean los pioneros del metalcore (ya saben, gritos durante la canción, coro cantado y riffs entre ambos, aunque realmente sea pura distorsión. Tocar el metal como si fuera pop, pues). Pero en definitiva son quienes lo perfeccionaron a pesar de tener letras medio emo para las edades que se cargan éstos señores. En éste disco se enfocan un poco más en la música, se siente más melódica, y le dan menos spotlight a las letras adolescentes de sus primeras grabaciones. Y éso es una buena decisión, pues es el album que más se disfruta de ésta banda. En lo personal, alcanza éste puesto porque a mí sí me gustaron mucho sus anteriores lanzamientos, pero los sentía medio parcos o repetitivos, y con éste por fin se superaron en el medidor de evolución musical de JJ87. Otra vez, muy recomendable, pero supongo que debe haber por lo menos un poco de afinidad por el metal.

#22.- American Idiot (Green Day, 2004)

Nunca fui fan de Green Day. Conozco gente que les es incondicional, pero a mí siempre me han parecido algo aburridos. En el 2004 lanzaron éste disco y mi opinión cambió ligeramente. Además de que tiene canciones por las que ésta década será recordada, hay un asunto del cual no sé si muchos se dieron cuenta. American Idiot es un álbum conceptual, que cuenta la historia del Jesus of Suburbia de la canción homónima. Esta caída de veinte me hizo re-escuchar el disco y darme cuenta que en verdad está bastante bien logrado y balanceado. Comercialón, claro (de algo hay que comer). Pero escuchable y con destellos de genialidad. Como no era fan, el nuevo look de los integrantes más al estilo de los Killers no me hizo desgarrarme las vestiduras ni nada por el estilo. Vendrían más lanzamientos en ésta década, pero honestamente ninguno me gustó lo suficiente para dar ésta mención. Y el video largo de Jesus of Suburbia está chido.

#21.- Stadium Arcadium (Red Hot Chili Peppers, 2006)

Californication es de mis discos favoritos, pero qué creen, es del 99. By the Way, salvo un par de canciones, se me hizo algo repetitivo. Y en sí, se podría decir lo mismo sobre Stadium Arcadium. Es más, al ser éste un disco doble (Jupiter y Mars), corría un peligro mayor. Pero al contrario, Stadium Arcadium me gustó porque se siente como una especie de auto-tributo. Podemos hallar todas las facetas musicales que los californianos han tenido durante su carrera, en específico el sonidito funk que los caracterizaba y que había estado ausente en By the Way. Otro cambio notorio es el lucimiento de John Frusciante en la guitarra, ya que mientras antes sólo cumplía con su cometido y mostraba estructuras simples en sus canciones, en éste da rienda suelta a su talento e incorpora más solos sin desentonar con el resto de la banda, lo cual le sienta al album de maravilla. Personalmente lo incluyo aquí porque disfrutaba mucho la época que vivía cuando se lanzó éste disco, a pesar de muchas dificultades externas, y recuerdo que a su salida lo escuchaba una y otra vez. Me hace falta ver a éstos cuates antes de que se retiren.

50,369 words in 25 days, with a fulltime (37½ hrs/week) job and around 3½ hour per day commute to and from. And insomnia. I now have a cool official certificate to prove I done it, a fairly hefty chunk of the beginnings of a rough draft that I hope to actually get out there into the wild someday, and the knowledge that I can actually do it.

According to some scientists, people who use Twitter are more likely to also have a Facebook

Whether or not a user is on other social networks also determines their willingness to use a service like Twitter. According to the study, 35 percent of those who have profiles on MySpace, Facebook, or LinkedIn also have profiles on Twitter. The study also found that just 6 percent of those who don’t use other social networks are on Twitter.

Apparently at some point shortly before I started typing this, twitter went over capacity and started showing people the fail whale.

Apparently someone told twitter that Kanye West, who I believe is a singer, was dead. Kanye west is not dead, but the storm of tweets continues unabated.

Rather humorously, one of the trending topics is ‘capacity’ as loads of people log in and post messages about twitter being over capacity, some times more than once.

Oh the humanity. And that is what I find so entrancingly attractive about watching twitter.

I’m just lying to you, I have no freakin’ clue when it comes to those…species.

Archeologists just recently discovered a dinosaur that is presumed to be under to pounds and a little over 2 feet tall. It is now recorded as the smallest dino in the world (next to the chicken sized, meat-eating, 4-5 pounder one discovered in North America).

The newly identified creature weighed less than two pounds and stood a little over two feet tall, said Luis Chiappe, director of the Dinosaur Institute of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County where the fossil bones are stored.

The dinosaur ‘would have looked like a roadrunner on steroids,’ Chiappe said.

It likely ate plants and hunted bugs during the late Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago. It was so tiny and fast that it probably darted between the legs of larger dinosaurs, researchers said.

Bones of four individuals — including skull, arm and leg fragments — were discovered three decades ago in Fruita in western Colorado and kept at the museum.

Chiappe and an international team recently identified and named it Fruitadens haagarorum, which incorporates where the bones were found and the name of the president of the museum’s board of trustees, Paul Haaga.

Now I’m not the one to say that size matters, because in this case it would totally own. Can you imagine having one of these as a pet? It’d totally scare the living dead out of the neighbor’s dog, which I might say is totally pissing me off right now. Too bad most people will mistaken this thing as my man unit, because it’s as long and as fast as this little fella. HIYO!

Truth be told, not only does WolframAlpha (an awesome search engine sort of thing) know the answer to life, the universe, and everything , it also can do math… who knew? Not me I say. I’m pretty clueless at this stuff, almost like the time some girl asked me out five minutes ago and I totally forgot. She’s sitting right next to me.

Then it will be time to test one of the most bizarre and revolutionary theories in science. I’m not talking about extra dimensions of space-time, dark matter or even black holes that eat the Earth. No, I’m talking about the notion that the troubled collider is being sabotaged by its own future. A pair of otherwise distinguished physicists have suggested that the hypothesized Higgs boson, which physicists hope to produce with the collider, might be so abhorrent to nature that its creation would ripple backward through time and stop the collider before it could make one, like a time traveler who goes back in time to kill his grandfather.

You heard it, the LHC wants to kill it’s grandfather. I call murderer! On the plus side though, you won’t exist anymore so that nagging-flesh-of-meat-of-a-girlfriend would finally shut up and pay that damn ticket herself. Yeah, I crashed into that car last night, but SHE  gave me the keys to start it. Well, I stole them, but that still doesn’t make a difference!

I’m not that good with gorillas… or any sort of  prime ape to be exact (ladies included), but this coat hanger gorilla is making me feel things I shouldn’t. Feelings as in love, love as in love making. Is it wrong for me to love? NO, I don’t think so.

I’m usually not one for war type games where the targets are other humans. I’m not squeamish about the violence, or anything like that. It’s just that if you’re going to put a gun in my hand I want it to be outrageous, and if I’m gonna be shooting things for fun, I’d rather it be aliens, zombies, or the like. While the Saboteur is not strictly a shooter, the elements are indeed there. And even though it is a period game, set in the backdrop of Nazi-occupied Paris, I am intrigued.

If you haven’t heard about this game, the premise is something like this: You play as Sean Devlin, a tough racing mechanic who is a few stones short of Blarney and out for blood. A Nazi officer has seriously fucked up your life, and you want retribution. And with the help of the French Resistance, British intelligence, an arsenal of weaponry, your own street smarts you’re gonna get some.

Sounds pretty cool, right? Well, you haven’t even scratched the surface. Below I’ve posted the cinematic trailer, along with some gameplay footage for you to gorge yourself on. Oh, and the middle one sports the Flogging Molly track “Seven Deadly Sins” and it is all too appropriate. Enjoy.

We all know that the PSPGo! is arriving anytime this week, but who’s really going to buy that thing? But let’s not listen to the Phailosophy Writer and move on with this post, shall we?

The PSPGo! is a downloads-only system because Sony wants to compete in the mobile market (i.e. the iPhone/ Mr. Jobs) and many current PSP users are worried about their current game library if they decide to upgrade. Many think you can grab a digital copy from Sony and download it on the system, but guess what?

“We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time,” a Sony Computer Entertainment of America spokesman told Kotaku.

You’re absolutely wrong! Due to piracy issues and stuff, Sony announced that the rumor of  ”digital trading” is only but rumors and won’t be happening. Shame, because I really was considering of buying a PSPGo!.. but now that I know there isn’t gonna be any hope for my UMDs… this is a no go for the PSPGo! See what I did there? Me neither, I’m hungry… for BRAINS
