What: The Gathering Place Homeless Connect

Homeless Action week provides a unique opportunity to educate and make people aware of the issues around homelessness including the impact of living with mental health and addictions.  Our main focus during this week is to host a one-stop shop called Homeless Connect where hundreds of individuals are connected directly with service providers and activities such as haircuts, foot soaks, hearing tests, gently used runners and much more.

It’s happening!

The Canadian debut of the international performance/literary/comedic sensation Literary Death Match happens this Friday!

Hosted by Opium Magazine founder and LDM creator, Todd Zuniga, at the W2 Storyeum – 151 West Cordova between Cambie and Abbott – space and featuring the talents of writers Nikki Reimer, Charlie Demers, Steve Burgess and Sara Bynoe, it should be a hilarious good time.

Those 4 writers will be reading some of their original work to a rapt audience and will be ruthlessly scrutinized by the judges: Talent Time’s Paul Anthony, Vancouver is Awesome‘s Bob Kronbauer and Diana Frances from various CBC incarnations.

Tickets are $10 in advance AND $10 at the door and you should totally come out because it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Drinks will be served, books and magazines will be sold, good times will be had.

The manifold stories held common threads bound to universal themes. ShadowBox presents a random interplay of silhouetted actors with the stories and key phrases from StoryBox’s eighty participants. The results of this 6-month project are revealed to pedestrian onlookers in W2 Storyeum windows. [Krista Lomax/Sammy Chien]

I recently sat down with the semi-reformed punk rock vocalist, trailblazing poet, self-proclaimed anarchist and creative technophile, Heather Haley to discuss her new book, Three Blocks West of Wonderland.

It was a blazing afternoon in June and we sought relative relief in a Thai restaurant on Commercial Drive.

We start off riffing about the possibilities for poetry on the iPad and then move into Heather’s influential work in video poetry, her years rocking Cascadia in punk rock bands and a million other things.

Heather was a part of the ‘Night of the Poets & Other Writers‘ at W2 Real Vancouver Writers’ Series during the Olympics this year at the W2 Culture and Media House.

She’s launching her most recent book of poetry, Three Blocks West of Wonderland, at the new W2 Storyeum space on Saturday June 17th at 7PM.

We’ll be there and will probably record the show for future BOTR episodes.

MEDIA CONFERENCE FOR DUKOT

WHAT: Media conference for the controversial political thriller Dukot

(Desaparecidos) in Vancouver with the artists in attendance

WHO: The film Dukot’s producer Dennis Evangelista, scriptwriter Bonifacio Ilagan, lead actor Allen Dizon from the Philippines, and U.S.-based poet and artist Melissa Roxas, survivor of abduction and torture, will be joined by members of the Dukot Organizing Committee-Vancouver.

WHEN: June 2, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.-11 a.m. WHERE: W2 at Storyeum, 151 West Cordova St., Vancouver, BC V6B 1E1 WHY:Dukot is a powerful and gripping cinematic experience that reveals the reality of the forced disappearances and ongoing human rights violations in the Philippines.

Dukot is based on the stories of real life desaparecidos (the disappeared) as well as the first-hand experience of scriptwriter Bonifacio Ilagan, a former political detainee, who was twice forcibly abducted.

INTERVIEWS: Dukot guests and members of the Dukot Organizing Committee will be

Omari Newton Artistic Associate

Montreal-born actor Omari Newton is a professional actor whose work can be seen on television, film and stage. He is fluently bilingual in both French and English and has performed in both languages. His stage work in Québec has earned him a number of favorable reviews and awards. Some career highlights include a best supporting actor nomination for his work in the Centaur Theatre’s production of Joe Penhal’s Blue Orange(soirée des masques). The play also went on to win best English production. Now a resident of Vancouver, Omari recently appeared in Joe Calarco’s critically acclaimed Shakespeare’s R & J and on an episode of the Spike TV series Blade.

Copyright Criminals is a riveting and expansive documentary about the history of music sampling, charting the movement from its inception during the rise of hip hop to the legal battles that dominate the practice today.

Artists’ Legal Outreach (ALO), W2 and Emily Carr University will present two screenings of this work, April 16 and 18, with the film’s executive producer Kembrew McLeod taking part in a post-screening Q&A at the April 18 event.

Copyright Criminals examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law, and (of course) money.

This documentary traces the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry. For more than thirty years, innovative hip-hop performers and producers have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new, otherwise original compositions.

When lawyers and record companies got involved, what was once referred to as a “borrowed melody” became a “copyright infringement.” The film showcases many of hip-hop music’s founding figures like Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Digital Underground—while also featuring emerging hip-hop artists from record labels Definitive Jux, Rhymesayers, Ninja Tune, and more.

It also provides an in-depth look at artists who have been sampled, such as Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown’s drummer and the world’s most sampled musician), as well as commentary by another highly sampled musician, funk legend George Clinton.

As artists find ever more inventive ways to insert old influences into new material, this documentary asks a critical question, on behalf of an entire creative community: Can you own a sound?
