Driving solo to NYC. GPS says arrival time is 3:54am. Then 1 hour of sleep before a 1 hour commute & an all day shoot. Switch rad.

1st fast food in years. Double quarter pounder from a truckstop MickyD’s. Saving my stockpile of organic PB sammichz for NYC. Savin’ that $.

Restaurant review: highway McDonalds. DBL QTR CHEESE was a l’il greasy. Guilt lingering. No napkins…but thanks for the free coffee, baby.

Just entered Dirty Jerz. That dirty burg from MickyD’s ain’t sittin’ too purty in my belly. I wanna barf. Another hour of driving to go…

Si eres de esos que pretenden sentar el culo en la butaca de una sala de cine estos últimos dias durante casi tres horas viendo el nuevo David Fincher, Ron Howard o Brian Singer, pensando lo cojonudamente cinéfila que podría ser la experiencia y dándote por culo esa nueva “comedia de turno” protagonizada por Paul Rudd y Sean William Scott, Role Models (aquí llamada con un ingenio epatante Mal ejemplo), permíteme mandarte a la puta mierda y desear que te follen por donde más te duela. Role Models es la nueva comedia gigantesca del genial David Wain, una especie de gemelo rellenito de Todd Solondz, poco conocido es nuestro país pero ya toda una estrella de culto en Estados Unidos (échale un vistazo a la web, anda) y autor de una de las comedias más cojonudas de los últimos años, la sublime, enorme, misericordiosa The Ten (aquí llamada con un ingenio epatante Los Diez Locos Mandamientos). Ahora Wain aparca a un lado el humor absurdo y grotesco deudor de los Monty Python (aunque algo hay) y le sale redondo un cóctel gaseoso de pringaos sociales y vencedores morales que no escatima mala uva y una realidad de valores pasmosamente cultos, honestos y sensibles que mucho público y crítica carca y subnormal ya acusa de gamberrismo inofensivo y zafiedad (mientras aplauden con la baba colgándoles el oportunismo de Fincher -pero como si es tu prima- con su mierda interminable de niño-abuelo, tan interesante como tirarse un pedo y salir corriendo). Pues sí que vamos bien, sí. Wain no sólo acierta con el reparto (en el cual podemos volver a ver a uno de los geniales cerebros a la sombra del universo Wain, Ken Marino, un actor brutal, por cierto), sino que consigue una química extraordinaria entre el mismo y funde mágicamente mordacidad y hostilidad social con camaradería y una ética realista que funciona como revulsivo contra la falacia y la hipocresía moral como no veíamos (y sentíamos) desde Bad Santa, la obra maestra de Terry Zwigoff. Y los chistes de Kiss y el inconmensurable climax final (resuelto con inusitada brillantez) están llamados al culto inmediato para pasar ya a los anales de la comedia americana clásica. Tan sencilla como parece, pero también tan buena como se le pueda ver y más. Dudo que haya nada mejor en la actual cartelera española.

Uf, it’s happened again. I write a wine column for the Agenda Urbana section of Chile’s La Tercera newspaper. They specify the space available, and I send them the piece, painstakingly edited to coincide with the allotted space. Unfortunately and all too often, they take a chain saw to it because they need more room for advertising (hey, it pays the bills). So… I’ve decided that I will publish my version of the story here in Tasting Chile. The originals are always in Spanish, but I’ll put the English translation up first with the Spanish as the first comment.

Have you ever noticed that the best wines come with a story? They’re made with love and purpose; they’re the product of a search for something special, and—in my opinion—the very best have a personal dimension to them.

This is the case of Facundo, the first son of husband and wife winemakers Felipe García, from Casas del Bosque, and Constanza Schwaderer, from Agustinos (Córpora). Facundo began as the dream of young lovers, it developed along with the projects of newlyweds, grew along with their two daughters, and was finally born after a long two years in the delivery room. The recently christened Facundo García-Schwaderer was welcomed into the world with grand applause and blessings.

Of course this is no ordinary child. No, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from Itata and Loncomilla with a touch of Carignan and Petit Verdot shows aromas of fresh fruit, medium body, juicy acidity, and plenty of personality. Two years in the barrel lend character without taking center stage. This child born of good genes is a pleasure today and will continue to grow with grace for years to come.

Not seeing the movie you came for is like having two Grandmothers (if your Grandmothers battled to the death over your love I’m truly sorry about mocking such deep seated pain). There’s the cool Grandma and the weirdly out of touch, ribbon candy Grandmother. And at Christmas, you can’t wait to get the Castle Greyskull you asked for from cool Grandma, but she’s caught in a snowstorm so all you have left is ribbon candy Grandma and her present. The whole time you’re unwrapping and politely thanking her RCG (Ribbon Candy Grandma), you’re really thinking about Castle Greyskull and how cool it’s gonna be, but for now you’re stuck with used books that library put out in a box marked FREE.

I had two movies in mind this weekend for the Tierney Family Quarterly Movie Night: the new Charlie Kaufman opus/mindfuck Synecdoche, New York (which I’ve been pronouncing Sign-douche) or the new Bond flick with that dreamy Danny Craig. But like cool Grandma on Christmas, it was not to be.

Spatially, Sign-douche was playing about 20 blocks away and my lady had just gotten off her ten hour shift of nether regional waxing so that was out. Temporally, Quantum of Solace (because Definite Amounts of Consolation is an unmade Woody Allen joint?) was sold out for the next three hours. Thankfully there were two Elizabeth Banks movies left to choose from (she’s bad ass as the new M). There was Zack & Miri Make a Porno, but I’m kinda down on Kevin Smith right now (see my recent rereview of Mallrats). So we settled for Role Models. (In the previous analogy, this would be if ribbon candy Grannie had an stroke and you had to pick between the pencils from Great Aunt Crazy Pantie’s junk drawer or whatever sock shaped item is wrapped in this morning’s newspaper.)

I was admittedly unpumped. Just seeing Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott bored me. There was hope. RottenTomatoes had heard good things (75%) but I couldn’t wrap my mind around how even David Wain was going to take an obviously formulatic movie about grown men finding maturity though caring for a child without just letting his love for spontaneous dildos rise and kill the movie (youtube the Stella shorts, no the TV show, to see what I mean). It turns out that’s another formula you can use in these situations: black kids swearing are HILARIOUS.

Bobb’e J. Thompson is funnier then Travolta attempting an accent. Rudd and Scott’s swearing exceded my expectations. McLovin (no one will ever remember your real name) is the Hollywood’s greatest workin’ nerd since Keith Carridine and taught me a new way to say vagina. Of course the movie is littered with exStatesmen but scenes are routinely stolen by the likes of Ken Jeong as the King of McLovin’s Medieval capture the flag group and Matt Walsh has his protector (one of the best lines comes from Matt when he’s “slain” by Rudd after an intense fake battle and then immediately pops back up and says, “Fun right? Send me your e-mail we always need people.”

The star of the show is the incredible Jane Lynch. Sometimes you just wonder when someone will write a movie just for her. I won’t ruin it for you but there are fewer people out there funnier with bagel dogs and cocaine.

So to finish this analogy, it turns out crazy Great Aunt ate all the ribbon candy and that sock shaped package had the G.I.Joe aircraft carrier inside it because she thought it was educational.

The nice folks over at Wired asked the guys behind MTV sketch show (and one-time web-wonders) Human Giant to pick out the next great web sensations.

Their list was pretty much a mix of fairly well-established comedy folk who have gone to the web as a way to put out work that nobody in the film or TV world was willing to touch.

Some of their picks, like the David Wain, Michael Showalter and Bob Odenkirk are definitely funny but not exactly new to the scene.  Others, like Jake & Amir are already on to other projects.

There’s nothing wrong with this list of web funnies – I just wish they’d pointed out a few more missed gems.

So, MyDamnChannel had a little news a few weeks back with the launch of two new web-series, the soap-spoof “Horrible People” and the hiphop cooking show “Cooking with Coolio.”  I thought I’d head over to the site and see how things were going.

I gotta say, it doesn’t look like things are going all that well.  I know that they syndicate their programming so view-counts aren’t completely reliable but here’s what I found:

Horrible People #1 : 10,668 views

Horrible People #2: 10,576 views

Horrible People #3: 3,576 views

Yikes.  That’s terrible.  And the news for Coolio is even worse, with his most recent video barely making it to 3000 videos.

And what about the other shows on the site.  Well, Andy Milanakis doesn’t have a single video over 10,000 views even with his supposed MTV fame and even David Wain’s highly vaunted “Wainy Days” is only averaging 25,000 views an episode.

Interestingly, the one show that seems to be very successful is Harry Shearer’s “Found Objects”, featuring video of newsmakers just before they go on live.  These episodes are getting hundreds of thousands of views per post, sometimes into the millions.  Of course, this is the only show on MyDamnChannel not to feature any original content.  It’s really just outtakes and bloopers.

So, what do we take away from all of this.  One, it is not easy to get viewers for web series.  Two, if the webseries is mediocre or just plain bad you can simply forget about building a following (unless you feature girls in bikinis). And, three, there is no consensus yet as to what is required to make a series on the web viable.

What would Thanksgiving be without Stella?
