This Tom Waits song came on the in the car sometime this week, and it seemed to match up perfectly with what was floating through our heads. I don’t even remember what song it was, exactly, but it doesn’t matter. I could probably insert any number of Waits songs into my memory of that moment and it wouldn’t change it. I figure it was “Shiver Me Timbers”. That’s been added to the life soundtrack, which will need to contain a few albums worth of Waits. As I typed that, a memory popped into my head. May as well indulge myself.

I was 15 years old and a freshman in high school. I went to a party that the older brother of my best friend was having. These folks would have all been roughly 10 years older than the 4 of us at the time. I was drinking vodka and orange juice. I recall somebody talking about how his car or house got broken into and his entire collection of Tom Waits was stolen. I had no idea who Tom Waits was at the time, but it was said in such a way that it stuck, and I felt that Tom Waits was somebody I ought to know about. The party for me ended up getting a bit out of control. I got wasted. Somebody made a “suicide” for me to drink…a bunch of alcohol mixed together. I downed it. I heard MC5 for the first time that night…and “Kick Out the Jams” seemed like one of the most amazing songs ever. I’d later track that down too. The night ended in a rather brutal defeat for me, though. I was carried into my house and handed over to my parents by my buddies, despite my request for them to just leave me laying in the yard. I couldn’t get down the stairs to my bedroom, so I slept in the guest bedroom upstairs. I vomited all over it. My mom made me go to church with her and my dad the next morning and I had to leave a couple of times to vomit in the church bathroom. The older brother of another friend that was along the previous night was there and came out to talk to me. He was laughing at me, saying he couldn’t believe I was there. He’d heard from his brother that I had gotten shitfaced the previous night. That was the first time I had ever gotten sick off alcohol. It wouldn’t be the last. Anymore, though…I don’t puke. Nausea, but no vomiting. I suppose that is a good thing? It took a number of years, but I finally did start getting into Waits. And it was that memory that prompted me to buy that first one. Now I have a Tom Waits collection and I don’t know what I’d do if somebody stole all of it from me. Lots of those sort of memories will likely come back to me over the next days, weeks, and months as we pack up the house and move across the country. There’s also a song called “A Soldier’s Things“, which comes to mind since we just had a garage sale.

I had intended to photograph every room of our house before we started packing everything up, so we could see what it looked like 10 years from now. That didn’t happen, though. We’ve already gotten packed and gotten rid of a lot of things. There is certainly of bit of melancholy in it all. Laura said we were going to leave the womb. We had always talked about leaving the only place we’ve ever “lived”, which I don’t think sounds right at all. We’ve “lived” in lots of places. This is the only place we’ve ever had a home. We were both born here. Our parents were all born within a 50-mile radius. Despite our dreaming in the few years after high school, we’ve never left for more than a long trip however. We’ve talked about where it might be cool to live. But all the while we were building our lives here. Distracting ourselves from the fact that time was passing, we were growing up, getting older, and getting set in our ways. When we bought this house, we both seemed to think that it was settled. We decided that would probably be the last time we moved ever, more or less.

Then, I somehow stumbled onto what I had been trying to avoid since I was 15: a career. I recall thinking back when I was starting high school that things just weren’t going to work for me. It troubled me a more than a bit. I knew that I couldn’t just fit in with what seemed to be the “norm”. I couldn’t decide to be a lawyer or accountant and just do it, going to work each day wearing a suit and playing golf on the weekends. Maybe I had been brainwashed from listening to too much John Lennon “Working Class Hero” earlier (also added to the Life Soundtrack now, though this isn’t the exact version that made it onto Plastic Ono Band–the best Lennon album). The Life Soundtrack is taking on a new dimension.

This Cort Effector model has built in effects circuits and sounds good for a low priced guitar. I have one like this, but all black. They were sold at Sears stores back in the 80’s. It was my first guitar.

From October 12th 2009, the main windows of Miss Sixty’s stores in Rome and Milan will be transformed in Doctor Parnassus’ Magic Mirror. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is an upcoming fantasy film directed by Terry Gilliam and written by Gilliam …and Charles McKeown. The film follows the leader of a travelling theatre troupe who, having made a deal with the Devil, takes audience members through a magical mirror to explore their imaginations.
Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits, and Heath Ledger star in the film, though Ledger’s death one-third of the way through filming caused production to be temporarily suspended.Ledger’s role was recast with Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell portraying transformations of Ledger’s character Tony as he travels through a dream world.

Antichrist

Regie: Lars von Trier (Dogville, Manderlay)

Met: Willem Dafoe, Charlotte Gainsbourg

Ziek, gestoord, pornografisch, gewelddadig, bizar.

Avatar

Regie: James Cameron (The Terminator, Aliens)

Brothers

Regie: Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father, In America)

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Regie: Terry Gilliam (Brazil, Twelve Monkeys)

The Limits of Control

Regie: Jim Jarmusch (Down by Law, Mystery Train)

Enseñadselo a mamá

Reason WAITS was my great great great grandfather James G WAITS’ brother, and the source of the letters that I quoted a couple of weeks ago in this post.

For some reason, Reason has been on my radar a lot this week so I thought it would be fitting to post these photos of his very unusual and cool headstone that a www.findagrave.com volunteer posted. She said that someone before her chalked the monument, which can damage the headstone and make it deteriorate faster. Not a good idea, in my book.

Actually, doing anything to a headstone is frowned upon in the genealogy and cemetery world. There’s an ongoing debate over what’s acceptable and what’s not. For more on that, check out this blog post from Dick Eastman.

http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2005/05/tombstones_and_.html

And the follow up post:

But for now, let’s get back to today’s Tombstone!

Reason Waits

b: 19 Nov 1819 in Brown County, Ohio

m: 19 Nov 1844 to Susan SIPES (1825-1855) in Ray, Missouri

m: 31 Oct 1858 to Melissa Jane CLEMMONS (1839-1927) in Atchinson, Missouri

d: 23 Feb 1892 in Fairfax, Atchinson County, Missouri

He had 4 children with Susan, and 7 children with Melissa.

I really don’t know a lot about him at this point, but I get the feeling this will change sometime in the very near future. I found a cousin on Ancestry.com that is one of his descendants, and she just emailed me this morning to say that she found a ton of WAITS photos and documents in a family scrapbook that she hasn’t looked at in a while. So I scanned the copies of Reason’s letters and she is going to copy what she has and send it to me. So this story will break wide open in the next few weeks!

Inscription:
“The pains of death are past
Labor and sorrow cease

O OCEANO ME REJEITA

Hoje o oceano me rejeita
Abrirei minha mente e deixarei tudo fora do meu tempo
Adoraria estar me afogando
E permanecer e permanecer
Mas hoje o oceano me rejeita
Emergirei para cá
Isso pode até doer
Tudo o que encontrarão é minha cerveja e minha camisa
A maré violenta está quebrando, o salva-vidas está longe
Mas hoje o oceano me rejeita
Hoje o oceano me rejeita.

Estranjos. Anjos estranhos.

I thought it would be fitting today to show you Edwin William Waits’ tombstone, since he was a major part of my day yesterday.

Edwin was born in Milford, Seward, Nebraska, USA and died in Marion, Oregon, USA. It’s my understanding that he was married with kids. Was it common back then to take someone’s body across country and not bury them with their spouse? That seemed to happen a lot in my family.

I took this photo at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Ruby, Seward, Nebraska, USA on Memorial Day, 2009 and noticed that a few of my family’s graves had flowers on them. Same thing in the Seward Cemetery. Assuming that the visitors are cousins, I’d really like to talk to them and let them know about my research and blog and see if they want to compare notes. Does anyone have any ideas on how I would get in touch with them? I’ve thought about leaving a note in a ziploc next Memorial Day, but that’s nine months away. Seems a shame to let it go that long if we live in the same area.
