The 2009 SFWA Pros and Joes Wake event is complete and we are proud to say it was huge success.  The weather was perfect as the temperature hovered around 85 degrees all day with a slight breeze and clear skies.  The crowd was amped with an estimate of almost 1,000 spectators filtering through the event throughout the course of the day.

PROS

From a Pro standpoint, this year’s group of riders was the most accessible of any group we have ever had.  All day the pros spent time with their team, signed autographs and were generally available to anyone interested in meeting and talking with them.

The pros this year included Nick Taylor, Andrew Adkison, JD Webb, Shawn Watson, Captain Jeff Skulnik, Scott Stewart, Adam Errington, Steele Laugherty, Jeff House, and Zane Schwenk.

JOES

On the Joes side of things, I can’t stress enough how impressive the riding was at this year’s event.  Let me tell you, there are some up and coming riders that will be household names one day in this sport.  The names of Noah Flegel, Kyle Evans, Brad Spencer, Tracy Baynham, Robby Holihan and so many others are names you need to remember.

I was driving home from working in MOA this afternoon when my tears suddenly came. I could not stop crying from Macapagal up until PAGCOR, Parañaque. And lucky for me, a few minutes after the tears died down, I received a call from a wakeboard buddy, Angelo.

I tried the sport a few months ago and I enjoyed it [even though I almost got hit in the head by a Korean kneeboarder who was not looking where he was going, dammmeeettt!] And ever since, Angelo has been talking to me about the sport and tips on where I can buy a vest.

So there I was on my abnormally-becoming-usual-baliw-moments of suddenly crying out of nowhere, when my phone rang to the song ‘Fireflies’ by Owl City.

Angelo was asking where I am and if I was going to Alabang. I didn’t know what was happening there so I asked him why. Apparently he has been trying to reach me since an earlier time to tell me that there will be a wakeboard show. So I hurriedly went home, changed clothes and dropped off my laptop, went to Westgate, Alabang with an almost empty fuel of tank.

It is my first time to actually see a wakeboard competititon or show and mygawd! Those world champs were amazing! I cannot imagine being able to do that. Here are some pictures:

Even though I got wet by Nick Davis [ggrrr!!!], I did not mind it all. I enjoyed watching them do their thing. And frankly, even though I would normally have freaked out going to Alabang by myself with an almost empty gas and a traffic SLEX, I allowed myself to be adventurous. I am living on the edge right now and if it’s the only way I can keep myself from thinking of YOU, then I would.

About a month ago Jennifer and Eric (mum and step-dad) got a Malibu Wakerider boat, which is a very nice boat with full leather “interior”, powerful audio system, an engine that sounds like a Corvette and all in all a very nice water sports boat. It is specifically designed to generate a decent wake for wakeboarding while still being useable for water skiing or tubing thanks to the powerwedge which changes the wake generation based on the boat speed. Have had a lot of fun on the donuts, and have had no real issues with waterskiing beyond issues with speed of the boat (such as the boat stopping completely in it’s tracks when the spotter thought I was about to fall and called out I’d fallen even though I managed to stabilise).

Well, the past few weeks I have attempted to Wakeboard. I read various websites that explain the technique, listened to the advice mum provided for how to get up, and everything seemed to advise to keep the board parallel to the water when starting, and only once up with the board level do you turn the board at all. As a very methodical person I followed these instructions to the letter. But every single time, for three weeks in a row of attempts, the front of the board formed a dam against the water and a wall of water as high as the board came over the front, sending me under and being dragged along against solid water resistance, having to let go of the rope.

After that many attempts at failing by following the instructions of those who knew how to do it, I decided that it was time to try something different and see what I could get to work for me. I decided to try giving the board about 30% angle on the left hand side (my dominant foot), and the very next attempt I almost got up and could feel it, without a wall of water coming over the board. The next time after this I managed to actually get up, but fell due to not yet knowing how to balance on a wakeboard, and the next attempt I managed to stand and stay up for about a total of three seconds (which when first starting is quite a decent length). With this progress and the refined technique to something that works for me I believe that the next time we go out I should be able to stay up for an indefinite amount of time after only one or two more attempts.

There are kite surfing kites for every stage of the sport. Because this sport becomes more and more popular, the kites get more and more advanced technologically  features on a kite cause certain consequences. For example, a thin forward edge is indicative of a kite that reacts rapidly to the controls. This can be fantastic for an experienced kite surfer and disastrous for a beginner.

Za oknem sroga zima, ale my tutaj sobie przypomnimy ostatnie ciepłe, wrześniowe, weekendy tego roku. Jakoś tak się złożyło, iż w tym miesiącu panowała lekka zamułka w moim umyśle. Postanowiłem przeciwdziałać i zainteresowałem się trochę bardziej zajawką wake’ową. Do tej pory woda nie była moim ulubionym medium. Mokro, zimno i nieprzyjemnie..na szczęście wszystkie fobie zostały konsekwentnie zdewastowane i śmiało można było rozpocząć cykl treningowy, ale za nim się to stało..

Pojechaliśmy obejrzeć jakieś zawody do Hlucina (chyba tak to się pisze). Nie mam pojęcia czy to były mistrzostwa, puchar czy po prostu konkurs, ale sama organizacja stała na bardzo wysokim poziomie. Czeska telewizja wykorzystywała żurawie i motorówkę..ktoś mi mówił, że relacja z tej imprezy trwała 1,5 h. W naszej telewizji publicznej tyle łącznie trwały wszystkie programy o tematyce ekstremalnej. Jednak w CzechoSłowacji wszystkie “elementy” społeczeństwa potrafią włączyć wyobraźnię.

Tego wieczoru trafiliśmy na urodziny Kozy. Prywatka została zorganizowana na przystani w Międzybrodziu. Zabawa była przednia, fotografii brak.
Natomiast tydzień później udaliśmy się nad Terlicko. W planie było cable pływanie, ale okazało się, że Szyszakowi nudzi się w domu więc wybraliśmy się trochę wcześniej by rozgrzać się przy wyciągarce..

Taką wyciągareczkę można sobie sprawić za dosyć małe pieniądze. Zakupić ją można od jedynego konstruktora tego typu sprzętu w naszym kraju inż. Bartka Szyszaka

Ten wieczór był bardzo specyficzny. Najpierw spotkaliśmy wielu znajomych w pewnym znanym klubie zamkowym w BB..

..by chwile później spotkać Mr Szyszaka..

Sobotni poranek okazał się bardzo bolesny pod względem mentalno-fizycznym. Całe szczęście, że woda posiada takie wspaniałe właściwości antykacowe..

Spędziliśmy tam dwa bardzo intensywne pod względem sportowo-towarzyskim dni. Oczywiście nie mogło zabraknąć polskiej integracji z użyciem wyskokowych płynów..

Makumba przyjechał z Koleżanką..

I caught up with longtime friend Marcos Smith, former Marketing Manager for Red Bull South Florida and current event coordinator for 5boards.com, as he was heading to a lake party in Pompano Beach, FL.  Typically, if I want to know what’s going on in South Florida I’ll ring Marcos.  He’s had his hands in events for years bringing together and introducing people to the boardsport’s community.  Yesterday was no exception as 5boards.com partnered up with SFwake.com to bring a diverse South Florida wake community together to shred Crystal lake.

I decided to stop by and I’m glad I did because it was nice meeting some new people and catching up with some folks I haven’t seen in a while.  The sentiment of all the riders seemed rather grateful as guys and girls from as far South as Miami and far North as West Palm Beach most of which have never met each other, came to enjoy some time on the water.  Surprisingly, I ran into a couple guys from Miami that had never been exposed to wakeboarding, were stoked to be invited and had intentions of joining SFwake club, eager to ride more.  Good times!
