Enoch Surfboard’s launches their wakesurf series at the Florida State Wakesurf Championships in Orlando, FL

I have been back from my rock climbing adventure for about a month and a half now. In that  month and a half I have been catching up with friend and family. The main reason I decided to end the road trip when I did, is because I wanted to focus more on my photography. My dream is to be a full time photographer. I don’t know what kind of niche I will find, but I like action and fashion photography and I strive to develop all genres (landscapes, macro, portraiture, etc.). I can’t currently support myself as a photographer and I am still creating a portfolio of photos that I can use to market myself. I am also updating and reworking my website. I have been talking with my good friend Dave and looking at lots of photographers website in the last few days. I came to the conclusion that I needed to simplify my websites look and feel and update the photos. One thing that you will notice in the slideshow on my homepage is that there are a lot of frames with two pictures in them. People these days want to see a story. With these changes I feel much more confident about giving my website to potential clients.

Attended my cousin Betsey’s wedding. Congratulations Betsey!

Turned 24 and spend some time relaxing up at the Semiahmoo Resort with my wonderful girlfriend. It’s beautiful.

Had a great time at Tad and Megan’s wedding.

Went on an eight day surf adventure down to Oregon. Thanks to Steve for snapping these two.

Spent last weekend in Sunland with Steve and his family. I have never been wakesurfing and got the chance to try it. It is possibly the most fun you can have on water! It’s an endless wave! What else do you need?

A perfect day!

Whew… Back in the country from Costa Rica.  Long story!  Bottom line is America needs to make passports the size of a credit card so we can carry them on our person at all times!  Had to take the 5 am bus to San Jose from Jaco and wait at the U.S. embassy for 4 hours to get an EMERGENCY passport so I could get out of the country.  Hope whoever took mine is enjoying it…  

Good news is the waves were Epic in Hermosa 5-6 ft. ++  and good conditions.

Surf like a pro behind our boat!

This past weekend was the official launch of our NEW wake surfboard called THE GERM.  

We stayed busy all day Saturday and Sunday at the Fl Wakesurf Championship on Lake Ivanhoe in beautiful downtown Orlando.  

Saturday consisted of a fun and successful demo day.  Anyone and everyone got the chance to ride behind two 2010 Mastercraft boats (from Mastercraft of Orlando) on the wake surfboard of their choice.  We got a lot of positive feedback and constructive criticism from professional riders that rode THE GERM (thanks for that).  Expect to see some slight modifications.  Overall, we were extremely pleased with how it rode as the riders’ sentiment was more than favorable.  On a side note, we were delighted to hear that  people really LIKE the ENOCH logo and THE GERM logo.  Even Darin Shapiro from Grindwater complimented us on the graphics. (Thanks Darin).

Sunday was contest day by which riders got 3 passes; a practice run and two scored runs.  This seemed to be a pretty favorable format for the riders, including myself, appreciated the practice lap down the lake before the scoring began.  The rain broke up the amateur and the pro divisions as a really strong squall rolled in, complete with fierce lightning and about 40mph winds!!  (had fun holding down the tent on that one)  After the rain let up they pressed on with the event as the pros threw down some stellar runs.  (more to come on the winner details and winning tricks, etc…)

Summer is here and the water has warmed up!  What better way to spend the weekend then with your family and friends.

Whether it’s wake to wake or wipe out, wakeboarding offers up some seriously awesome summer adventures. The emerald lakes of Whistler are perfect for cooling off on a hot day. While you can swim, fish and canoe on Nita, Alpha, Lost and Alta Lakes, Green Lake is the only one on which boats are permitted. Since this is the town where every other board sport is well represented, it’s no surprise that you can also wakeboard in Whistler. Ironically, glacier-fed Green Lake is also the coldest of the bunch, so you’ll want to wear a dry suit.

If you’re lucky enough to own a top of the line wake boat (it’ll only set you back about $100,000) then by all means, hit the lake. For the rest of us, it’s time to charter a boat. There are two wake schools to choose from in Whistler. We went with Whistler Wake. The other company is Wake the Lake. Both companies have brand new super tech wake boats and offer up a driver, dry suits and boards galore. You can expect to pay between $100-$200 an hour for the boat based on time of year, number of people and size of the boat.

If you’ve never been wakeboarding, the only advice I can give you is grab the rope handle from around the outside of your legs as opposed to between them. Other than that, just stay in the seated position as the boat takes off and then gradually let the force pull you up as you turn the board. Once you’re up, it’s pretty easy, so just ride the wake and rip it up.

Once you’ve mastered getting up on a wakeboard, I’d highly recommend wakesurfing; no bindings necessary. You use a shorter rope and the goal is to get into the side wake of the boat, pull yourself up until the rope is slack – and then let it go. Ideally, you’ll be riding the never-ending wave and looking like a rock star.

For a town in the mountains, it’s the closest you’ll get to real surf for a few hundred miles so you might as well hop into a pimped out wake boat, pump up your favourite tunes and rock the wake – or at least attempt to.

The weekend had perfect conditions for wakeboarding and being out on the water relaxing and having some fun.  Calm water most of the day.  Sag Harbor’s tranquil waters certainly lived up to its name of being one of the most scenic areas in Long Island.

In 1982 I was born into a “River Rat” family, and have been around the water sports industry from that day.  Now I know some of you are saying that you graduated college in 1982, or maybe even high school, but this is not my point.  My point is this.  Ever since I can remember there has been one defining lesson taught during my 27 years of being on the water.  SAFTEY, SAFTEY, SAFTEY!  In the next few paragraphs I am going to outline some of the most important safety factors for wakesurfing, and water sports in general. 

To start off, wakesurfing requires the same level of safety that all other water sports require.  This article will cover the type of boat needed for wakesurfing, the type of gear needed, driving/riding safety, and overall basics that a person stepping into a boat should know.  For a seasoned pro, or a newbie to the sport it is always important to refresh safety knowledge.      

Now that it is time to give wakesurfing a try, please make sure to wakesurf behind a boat that has an Inboard motor only.  The reason this is critical is because on boats with Inboard/Outboard motors or boats with Outboard motors there is a huge chance to get caught in the prop of the boat.  With an Inboard motor, there is a lot less chance of getting to the prop when falling because the prop is under the boat.  If the motor, or any part of the motor is in plain sight wakesurfing should be reconsidered.  With the motor in plain sight people will be within a dangerous distance to that motor and the results may not be pretty. 

Having the proper gear is the one of the most important safety aspects to wakesurfing.  The most important gear a person should have is a Life Vest.  While there is always a drive that wants us to wakesurf without a life vest, it is not recommended.  It is recommended to always wear a life vest.  A vest that is USCGA certified will give the best results in the case of an emergency.  However we are seeing a lot more riders which prefer to use a competition vests that are not USCGA certified.  In either case it is imperative that a life vest of some type is to be worn.  Emergencies happen in the blink of an eye, and a life vest is the best way to save lives.  Go Figure!  Without life, there is no wakesurfing!     

There are two other pieces of gear that are needed and that are very important to wakesurfing.  The first piece of gear that is needed is a wakesurf board.  The board itself is not so much used as a piece of safety equipment; however it is critical to make sure that the board is in good working condition.  Many times boards can be damaged, which can lead to the board breaking while riding.  This is a safety issue.    Also check to make sure that the board doesn’t have any small cracks that can lead to fiberglass splinters or worse.  In both situations, the board that is going to be rode must be checked visually before it is going to be used.  If the risk is weighed before getting in the water, there will be a lot less of a chance of getting hurt which will increase the your safety while wakesurfing.

The next piece of gear that is as critical as any other piece of gear you have is the rope and handle of the rope.  Many people try to modify their old waterskiing, wakeboarding rope and handle for wakesurfing which is not recommended.  There are many companies in the industry that have designed specific wakesurfing handles and ropes that provide the proper length of rope and handle size.  The handle should be wide enough to allow a firm grip by one hand and an overlap hand, but not wide enough for a spaced grip with both hands.  Once a rider is up and riding, it is important to only hold onto the rope with one hand.  Sometimes when trying to find the meat of the wave you will get some slack in the rope and this slack should not be looped in anyway possible when holding the rope.  If there are loops in the line this will create a danger that limbs can get caught in when you fall.  This danger could result in the loss of that limb.  The same dangers are apparent when using a handle that is over sized. 

It is also important to talk about safety while wakesurfing.  There are many risks when wakesurfing and accidents can happen at anytime.  One of the most important ideas to grasp when wakesurfing is that when a rider falls the board is usually somewhere over the top of them.  Seeing that most wakesurf boards are very buoyant there is no real way to tell where the board is after falling, and it is important that the rider protects one of the most important parts of his/her body; Their Head.  It is easy to protect the head by covering it with a forearm.  By using this technique the rider can lesson the chance of getting knock in the head by the board.  The boards might seem light and harmless, but they can cause some sever damage.  Always be thinking about where the board might be when resurfacing the water.      

Another important safety aspect of wakesurfing is the driver’s responsibilities.  It is very important that the driver of the boat maintains a constant speed.  If the drive lets the speed of the boat decrease there is a good chance that the rider will run into the back of the boat causing damage to the boat, swim platform, the board, and may cause injury to the wakesurfer and other shredders on the boat.  It is also very important for the driver to be aware their surroundings.  Even though the boat will only be traveling approximately 11 mph it is imperative to know what other boats are around, and where they are at all times. 

After covering some of the topics about safety, I hope we can all realize that there is a lot more to learn, and that we need to practice safety whenever we are on the water.  Wakesurfing is an enjoyable sport with many dangers, and we want to keep our friends, passengers, riders, and drivers all on the same page to ensure that we can wakesurf for a lifetime.  I hope you enjoyed this article and keep your eyes out for more helpful wakesurfing information in the near future.

Today with the up and coming sport of wakesurfing we have seen the addition of many different teams such as the Crowley Wake Team.  The Crowley wake team is lead by Tommy Czeshchin who has worked hard to become an Olympic Snowboarder with accents such as Medals from the X-Games, Gravity Games, world cups, Grand Prixs, and more.  The Crowley Wake Team has also added Bri Chmel to their team for 2009.  

Bri has been wakesurfing for two and a half years, and has proved to be one of the best women wakesurfers in the industry.  You can check out her website at www.brichmel.com.  It is easy to say that Bri has been on the podium for almost every event that has taken place since she has started riding.  Look for her in the future to keep on pushing the sport of wakesurfing with her spins, shuvits, and airs.
