Here at Hip Hop for Nerds I love me some Wale (pronounced wah-Lay). His album came out not too long ago. Its definitely worth the purchase. Its getting cold outside now and I want like to hear some nice comforting music and nothing hits that spot better than a few striped back and  great acoustic performances. These are some of my favourites at the moment. First one is from Ellie Goulding with Erik Hassle. I think this girl has an amazing voice, here we’ve got a cover the Robyn track “Be Mine”. I don’t know much about the guy on this track but the track works well as duet.

Next got a got from one of my favourite electro pop acts doing an acoustic version of their first track “Sleephead”. Its a great track on its own but here, when its been completely stripped back it just like a lullaby. I think it shows how good the track is that it holds up so well when it is so good with just a keyboard and a voice.

How about some acoustic hip-hop, that’s right Wale has done an acoustic version of “Diary” off his Attention Deficit album. I think this sounds great, alot of credit has to go to the female vocalist, Marsha Ambrosius who really makes this track stand out. I just like the fact Wale is trying different things, keeping it fresh, like new talent should.

Greeting and salutations Folks!

As a music lover I am often in search of Waldo within the soundscapes.  I am convinced there is a musical revolution taking place and we have the pleasure of witnessing a movement in progress.  The revolution may not be televised but it seems it will certainly be blogged…

In the Hip Hop genre, there are a host of new and wonderfully refreshing artist (Fresh Daily, J. Cole, Wale, Outasight, The Cool Kids, Kidz In the Hall, Donnis, The Kid Daytona, and Charles Hamilton among others) working with sounds, melodies, and concepts that are not thought of as belonging traditionally to hip hop.  Within this oddly sweet cacophony of sounds, I believe I have found a sound that is truly FRESH and true to the soul of it s makers.  This is where we find Waldo today…

Some time back I stumbled upon the music of Philly’s new musical promise land; a four piece hip hop/electronica  band by the name of Chiddy Bang.  While one may naturally hear the influences of the band clearly, the sound produced by those influences is completely original.  It is a natural blend of the individuals and what they bring to the table.  To fully understand and appreciate the music of Chiddy bang, a listener may perhaps needs a history book and serious knowledge of pop-culture.  As a lover and appreciator of good lyrics I am astonished by the ability of front man  Chidera “Proto” Anamege to speak of life experiences and their musical journey by using metaphors, blended with pop cultural references that would  make the head’s of the TMZ staff spin…and the music is never short of samples and references to a n even wider range of musical scapes.

The more I listen to the band; I am more than ever convinced of their originality and musical prowess.  Over the last year or so I have kept my ears wide open for the sounds seeping through the blogosphere labeled “Chiddy Bang.”  And I must say I am very much impressed by the growth and maturity of that sound, culminating in the released of Chiddy Bang’s latest mixtape “The Swelly Express.” (click to download entire mixtape

I really fuck with DJ Hero, it’s fun as all hell, but this dude is on some next shit. He hit 100% (717 in a row) of the notes on expert with the Wale/M.I.A. mix (which is pretty dope). Too bad I can never achieve this, due to the fact that I have a life. Still congrats to this guy, I tip my Yankee fitted!

Chase & Status – Saxon ft. Nicki Minaj

So Dubstep kings Chase & Status are really taking this U.S. remix/collaborative effort to heart. So far they’re 2 for 2, they got that Snoop joint, and that Jay-Z D.O.A. remix. Nicki Minaj hasn’t been covered really at all on our site, and now that I’m pondering, I’m really not sure why. She meets all the stringent criteria that we place on covered artists. She’s hella hot, she rhymes better than Asher Roth, and she’s hot shit, killing the blogs. Peep the video, Wale is totally kicking that elementary school game, you know, when you spit in a girls face because you like her but don’t want her to know it.

I’m so ready for everyone to get home so we can get this holiday weekend started RIGHT. I have started celebrating, but at the moment, it is a party for one. So I decided to take it to the interwebz. So we can all be alone together while we get holiday going. So whether you are packing, traveling, cleaning, cooking, working or denying, won’t you please join me? I have picked this as our Thanksgiving kick off party theme song. This is a great ass shaker, no matter what you are doing.

I am thankful for everyone of you who reads this blog. I am so honored that people like to hear what I have to say. After years of complaining about all the negativity in the media, it is so powerful to be able to put something positive out there. And the fact that you read it and respond to it, makes my heart so happy.

I would also like to thank Ian, a pasty, funky scot limey [don't ever call him a scot - editor] who turned me on to this clip. I’ve never been able to get Boo ya tribe and now finally, yes I can.

Say hello to Wale

This is the other song that got me out of my chair this morning. I’m really digging Wale, a rapper out of the DC area. This video is so much fun, I love how silly he is, the Seinfield shout out is so unexpected! So crank it up and dance it out. Because it time to get grateful ya’ll.

For as far as hip-hop production has come thanks to the likes of Kanye West, Timbaland, Dr. Dre, Just Blaze and the rest, I’m a firm believer that some of the best beats are the simplest. Give me a drum set, guitar, piano and some strings and I’ll give you a album chalk-full of quality. Well, not me personally, but you get the idea.

Off the top of my head, it’s producers like Ant and songs like “Thugz Mansion” by Nas and 2Pac or “My Block” by Scarface that can really strike a chord that nothing else can. Acoustic-type music is just fantastic, there’s something about stripped down songs that makes it more personal, which for certain songs makes them better. This is one of those songs.

Wale and Marsha Ambrosius killed this version of “Diary”, to the point where it should have been the version that made Attention Deficit.

wow. this is exactly why wale is deserving of every single post and every single bit of hype he gets. i love that the instrumentation really gets to shine here, it’s probably my favorite on the album as far as the music aspect goes. huge props to the sleepwalkers on the production. you know, there’s a place on the charts reserved for the drakes of the music world…but there’s a special place in music history reserved for the wales.
