On a whim, I agreed to go to a local restaurant/catering/baking supply warehouse with Jackleen and my Aunt Tricia so they could pick up supplies for an upcoming catering gig and for the holidays. {A bit of background before I go further: my brother Tyrone and I don’t call our parents “mom” and “dad”; “dad” has never been an option because our father insisted on being called “Pop”–getting into that story is going to take too long. Instead, we call our mother Jackleen (spelled phonetically, it’s the way Grace Jones says it in Boomerang–Tyrone’s idea) and our father Old Dude (my idea ’cause, well, he’s old and he spent some time growing up in Oakland, so I feel the Cali nod is appropriate). Now back to the story already in progress.} Located on Summer Avenue, Lit Jr. is the satellite location of a larger warehouse on Union Avenue. This big red box had to be one of the most  fantastical, random places I’ve ever been in my life. I felt like Mitchell from Modern Family on discovering the joys of Costco (it’s really worth watching the entire episode; the show is that good).

It must’ve been kismet that I brought my camera with me, and I’m so glad I did. I realize this post is so far and away from the purpose of this blog, but I had to share. Below are some of the snaps I took while exploring the aisles at my new favorite foodie supply joint.

And that’s all folks. I got too caught up in filling Jackleen’s basket and coming up with ideas for the wares in the store to take anymore pictures. I’m seriously thinking about investing in a set of melamine diner dishes for everyday use. Hey, they’re simple, sanitary and virtually indestructible.

It’s too bad I missed out on the opportunity to get a shot of Tricia in her berét and cape, though. The Cecil DeMille-ness of her attire would’ve added to the randomness of the day.

I was watching the premiere of the new season of Fringe the other night, and man, that show is still… it’s just not there, you know? There’s a nice little reference to The X-Files in the episode, entitled “A New Day In An Old Town,” and while watching it, I kept thinking back to The X-Files, and The X-Files when it was at it’s height, mind you. It’s not hard to let your mind drift like that when you consider how decent the production values on a show like Fringe are, and how horrible the writing is. That, and I was still thinking about the idea of Frankenstein, and that reminded me of the episode from season five of that series, “The Post-Modern Prometheus,” otherwise known as “the black and white episode” in which Mulder and Scully go hunting for a modern day Frankenstein monster in the heartland of America…

Though highly gimmicky, it’s actually one of my favorite episodes of The X-Files, both funny and weird, but still really getting to the core of the show. In fact, looking back now, you could almost say that the show did it’s fluffy light-hearted fare than it did some of the paranormal elements? Maybe.

This is how we all started to feel towards the end of this show, but when it was good, it was damn good.

I don’t want to say too much about the episode, other than it involves a Elephant Man/Frankenstein monster that’s not all that he seems, and who has a serious love for Cher, and it was from the season right before the movie came out. The season after the movie was an interesting one if, for nothing else, you could tell that Chris Carter was seriously bored with the show and just doing whatever he could to keep himself awake (examples being the body switching two parter with Michael McKean, which was excellent, and Mulder’s time travel Nazi hunting vacation in the Bermuda triangle, also excellent).

There’s a whole fansite, called Goodnight, Dr. Frankenstein, and it’s devoted to just this episode alone. Very interesting. Good stuff. I’d suggest you check it out if you get the chance and as for Frankenstein, I’m not done talking about the monster yet, or the literary mad scientists who created it…

A toast to the King with a glass of King Estates Pinot Noir  would be music to your mouth!  And you don’t have to wear “Blue Suede Shoes” or go “Walking in Memphis” to find it either!

A salute to the day with any drink made with a dash of bitters would send the right message! How about a Lime Rickey? Here’s the recipe: 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice, 1 oz. simple syrup, 3 dashes of bitters, 6-8 oz. of club soda. Pour all the ingredients in a collins glass and top with the soda. Garnish with a spiral of lime peel, and serve.

Mmm… Känn julstämningen. Vad skulle kunna vara bättre än en gran av Mountain Dew på julafton? Kanske ganska mycket, men bättre än så blir det inte för mig och Pelle ikväll. Men pyssligt var det iallafall att knåpa ihop den, och det skänkte ändå lite julstämning att sitta och limma burkar till julmusik. Walking in Memphis

Un joven atormentado por su culpabilidad en el accidente que costó la vida a su esposa recoge a un autoestopista que dice ser nada menos que Elvis, el Rey. Pero no un imitador como los cientos de ellos que peregrinan a Graceland el 16 de agosto de 1997, sino el auténtico Elvis, que vencido por las particulares circunstancias de su vida fingió su propia muerte para desaparecer y deambular como un vagabundo por el medio oeste americano desfaziendo entuertos… Esa es la premisa de Finding Graceland, la película de David Winkler de 1998 en la que, como no podía ser de otra forma, se dan cita dos clásicos de la música americana.

El primero, Suspicious minds, en una curiosa versión a la que pone careto facial el propio Harvey Keitel en una interpretación de las más extrañas que se le han visto. La segunda, Walking in Memphis, el tema de Marc Cohn, un nombre que da muchos problemas a los pinchadiscos cuando pronuncian muy rápido.

Afternote:  Fixed the vid.  Did ya’ll know I had a thing for Elvis?  I was born just four days after he passed away…  Of course, you can beat the original…it just won’t let me embed it here.

“Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel” zicea Jimi Hendrix cândva (cu mult înainte să mă nasc eu, desigur). Nu greşea cu nimic. Într-adevăr, trebuie să ai porii special deschişi ca să-ţi intre blues-ul în corp, să-l poţi filtra prin organism, finalmente – să-l poţi simţi cu adevărat.

Cine încă se mai întreabă despre ce vorbesc, sigur nu a fost să-l vadă/audă pe orădeanul A.G. Weinberger (18 octombrie 2007, Preoteasa). Invitat special – Norris (unu’ mult mai pletos şi mai român decât Chuck, zis şi Walker, poliţist texan).

A.G. este singurul artist non-american acceptat să participe la celebrul festival Bluestock, Memphis. A petrecut patru ani în S.U.A., unde s-a “împlinit” din punct de vedere muzical şi a cântat în cluburi din Chicago sau New York. Nu ştiu dacă tot acolo a învăţat şi despre punctualitate, cert este că la Preoteasa a întârziat exact 15 minute, cum tempore (sfertul academic). Poate doar la operă sau la teatru mai vezi aşa ceva. În cele peste 80 de concerte la care am fost până acum, am observat că artiştii întârzie măcar o oră (or fi după un alt fus orar, habar n-am). La lansarea Nerostitelor de anul trecut, Coma a întârziat nu mai puţin de două ore (desigur, am şi exemple mai grave, numai nu-mi vin acum în minte).

Nu mă voi obosi să zic de ce este frumos blues-ul, căci asta o va explica A.G. de unul singur.

A, încă o piesă pe care A.G. a cântat-o la Preoteasa şi care m-a uns la corazón (cred că aşa se scrie) – Walking in Memphis, preluare după Marc Cohn (nu Cher, cum crede lumea).

Oricum, să-mi explice şi mie cineva de ce A.G., deşi cântă “bluz”, nu poartă niciodată bluze, ci cămăşi .
