Football

The opening of a new stadium may or may not be a good enough excuse to haul the Premier League’s finest to Stockholm for a meaningless friendly but that’s exactly why Sweden and England will go through the motions tonight. Steven Gerrard will get his 100th cap while Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling and Everton’s Leon Osmon will make their debuts but expect the most interested spectators to be those managers s who didn’t quite have the heart to ask their lads to call in sick.

Draft dodgers like Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott will no doubt be watching from the comfort of their mock Tudour mansions safe in the knowledge that they’ll be back in team for the important bit next year.  England won 3-2 at Euro 2012 and that scoreline is 30/1 in Paddy Power’s betting tonight.

Elsewhere, Giovanni Trapattoni has found some Irish players who might actually be able to play football and is giving them a run out under pressure from fans, the  FAI and the media to broaden his option ahead of the World Cup 2014 qualifying clash with Sweden next March.

Whether anyone learns anything from tonight is debatable but managerless Scotland sure need to impress someone against Luxembourg after two demoralising defeats that did for Craig Levein’s reign as manager.

Dean Winstanley and Kevin Painter are top dogs in Group C while Michael van Gerwen whitewashed Ted Hankey  to head Group B ahead of Robert Thornton.

David Pipe’s Grands Crus has hardened into 9/4 favourite for Saturday’s  Paddy Power Gold Cup at this weekend’s Open meeting at Cheltenham. The Pond House trainer who won the race last year with Great Endeavour has nominated Walkon, Al Ferof and Calgary Bay for former England international Mick Channon as the main dangers.

Wednesday’s racing comes from Bangor, Exeter, Southwell, Kempton and Downpatrick.

Night falls, and all the city is a stage. Dark, vunerable, and everyone does something different with it.

For some, it’s about retreating inside to the cozies of comfort and the most important style decision you have to make it which pjs to slip on. For those who venture out into the unchartered island night, the choice is all yours. You have at least nine or ten hours before the sun rises over Manhattan, creating a shadow upon the city, and a new day with all new possibilities.

And in that time, what is most important to you? It’s what you do, it’s who you’re with, and it’s what you’re wearing and how that makes you feel. It’s that last minute gold bangle that you slip on as you slip out the door. That red lip that you apply with your compact in the cab, or the shoe that you pull of a box, drag out of a closet, or wherever you grab it from, and it transforms you. You are complete, and ready to take on anything.

It’s in that same vein, that the new Stuart Weitzman video series, “Walking after Midnight” launches. A series of shorts, starring Petra Nemcova, and directed by the unstoppable James Franco; it illustrates those aforementioned nights out, and speaks to that woman. Weitzman, already an authority on shoes, is also well versed in that moment at night, between walking out your door and figuring out just where your next step will take you. It is that platform (literally..) that lets us not only live out our own evening adventures, but Petra’s as well, as we step into her shoes and explore the nightlife with her. They have a gritty, New York look to them; presumably inspired by the streets themselves, and the almost orange light affect reminds me of a neon sign, and reflects a city that is sometimes best seen at dark.

As for me, after watching the Walking After Midnight series, and discovering the IFB project they collaborated with, it brought me back to my own island nights; and how differently I experienced all of them. When I was in high-school it was naive nights out at lax, non-id checking bars; usually wearing some sort of Steve Madden platform, or sneaker. Later in life, a single taking the city nights for all they were worth, it was about dressing up and partying hard, with my signature stilettos and tutus. Now, at 31 years old, I tend to favor nights on the couch, cooking with my boyfriend, and watching scary movies. The only club I get excited about is the sandwich.

But those island nights can still lure me out, and fixate me. And even though in my case, the story and the players have changed, the same constant still remains. When I walk out the door, I have to feel good, and that usually means the little extras like a red lip, a fresh blowout, and my favorite shoes.

Miu Miu turquoise brocade heels were my first grownup item, straight from path to purchase. I saw them in Vogue, dogeared the page, took a subway down to the Miu Miu store in Soho, and promptly bought a pair of 6′s. They became my go to shoe; and now in my early thirties, nothing has changed.

I wore them out constantly; to the bars with jeans, to birthday dinners with black and white dresses. As I got older they were put back in their red box, reserved for more special nights. I wore them to my 30th birthday with my Carolina Herrera dress that I scored at Lucky Shops. And again, earlier this year, when I was featured on an episode of All on the Line with Joe Zee, and met Nicole Miller. And then again in April, with a Sequin Theory dress when I wore them to the first wedding I went to with my boyfriend.

Although I’m sure they do, I’ve never seen anyone else ever wearing them, and that brings me great comfort. They remind me of a time when I was still learning about my style, and even now all these years later, they represent me in my truest form; a woman in the big city, trying to make her own mark. Patsy Cline sang of the woman who goes walking after midnight, Petra Nemcova emulates her, and for every other woman who slips on her own “go-to” shoes and steps into that Manhattan night, she is also doing just that.

In an effort to support residents, Halton Region’s Health Department offers a number of programs that promote healthy eating and exercise.

Healthy Eating

Through the Farm to School program Halton works with local organizations to bring fresh, locally grown produce into Halton elementary schools. The program influences healthy eating habits in a positive way and also helps children understand where food comes from.

We are also fortunate to have dedicated members of our community working towards these same goals including Julia Hanna, founder of the Kids Culinary Community initiative. The Kids Culinary Community strives to develop children’s skills in food preparation, while at the same time teaching them about the environmental and economic benefits of eating locally grown food. The lessons learned through this program are life lessons that can have long-term, positive effects on individual and community health.

Together with the Halton Region school boards, Halton has also supported the implementation of the School Food and Beverage Policy, Bill PPM 150 which ensures students have healthier food options at school.

At work, the Region assists employers in providing healthy food choices for employees through the Eat Smart program. The program offers awards to companies that maintain high standards of food safety while at the same time offering nutritious food choices in their cafeterias.

To support individuals in making healthy choices in their daily lives, the Region launched the Community Food Advisor program. Through the program, trained volunteers speak to community groups about the skills needed to adopt healthy eating habits. They also help participants learn more about safe handling and food storage. 

Physical Activity

In addition to nutrition, Halton also works with community partners and organizations to promote physical activity.

Programs such as walkON bring together decision-makers and residents to learn more about how the built environment, like our roads and sidewalks, can make it easier for people to walk, bike, or use public transit instead of a car.

The Region also participates with the Halton Region school boards in the Active and Safe Routes to School program which encourages children to walk or bike to and from school.

And behind the scenes, we are working closely with Regional and Municipal planners to ensure Halton residents have a community that is both walkable and bikeable now and in the future.

At the head of the market is David Pipe’s irresistible grey, Grands Crus who, after three starts over fences, has established himself as the leading novice staying chaser this season. He is a worthy favourite and one which would take a lot of beating if he were to line up on the day, but the problem is whether he will be in the line-up. Connections appear to be stuck in complete indecision over whether to run the 7-y-o in the RSA or Gold Cup and at a very short price for the RSA, where a run is far from guaranteed, Grands Crus has to be overlooked from an ante-post perspective. However, in a situation similar to that of Somersby (Ryanair/Champion Chase), he looks worth a bet for the Gold Cup where, although the more unlikely destination, there is far more value and the NRNB concession is available. If he were to go for the blue ribbon event, he would more than likely start as third favourite behind Long Run and Kauto Star (both of whom have question marks over them) in a race which does not look a particularly strong renewal. Grands Crus would stand a great chance of at least a place finish.

At such as short price, Grands Crus has forced value into the market meaning there are some decent horses at some valuable prices. Bobs Worth is the current second favourite, but has not looked a natural over fences thus far. He narrowly beat Cue Card on his first start and has since been soundly beaten at Kempton and Ascot by the likes of Grands Crus, Silviniaco Conti and Invictus. He seems to be priced up based more on his hurdling performances (including victory in the Albert Bartlett at the Festival last season) than his form over fences. The RSA is a very testing event and really puts jumping under pressure and Bobs Worth does not look to have particularly justified his position near the front of the market in a race which often throws up a big priced winner and consequently he is discounted at the present time.

Silviniaco Conti and more significantly, Last Instalment have recently been ruled out of the race and that, along with Pricewise, has caused First Lieutenant to contract in price. The value looks to have gone now and he is another who has achieved little over fences and appears fancied based more on his hurdling efforts (also a Festival winner last year). Invictus meanwhile, picked up a valuable race at Ascot last time and looks a decent prospect. Worryingly, however, he did not appear to be suited by Cheltenham when third behind Champion Court on New Year’s Day, and has arguably shortened enough now. JOIN TOGETHER, on the other hand, has won on his last two visits to Prestbury Park, beating some useful types in the process, has only one entry at the Festival and even more importantly looks a sound jumper. Add that Ruby Walsh is likely to take the ride and the 7-y-o looks to have very good prospects for the race.

There are potential challengers from Ireland, but they all carry question markts. Sir De Champs is more likely to go for the Jewson, Bog Warrior is unlikely to run next month at all, Lambro has never been to England, and Call The Police was disappointing on his visit to the course last season and has alternative engagements. None of them are worth touching without a NRNB option.

Finally, there are a couple left at big prices which are worth a closer look. Champion Court has shaped well this season and is undoubtedly an interesting candidate. He is currently on target for the Jewson, but connections must be tempted to go for the RSA given the fragile state of the race and he looks a reasonable proposition at the odds. Walkon and Mossley are also worth remarking on. Both disappointed last time out and have subsequently drifted in the betting, but the RSA now remains the only entry for the pair. They have both run well at Cheltenham in the past and are expected to appreciate the step-up to 3m. Walkon is narrowly preferred as he kept on last time, whereas Mossley pulled up in the same race and that is never a good sign when less than a month before the race.

Grands Crus 1pt E/W @ 8/1 (NRNB) [Gold Cup]

In what is turning out to be a vintage year in the Novices’ Chasing ranks Walkon can give the likes of Zaynar something to think about at Newbury this afternoon.  Alan King’s 5 year old grey gelding made his chasing debut at Exeter on 2 December after a break of 261 days when he jumped like a seasoned professional going away to win as easily as he liked.  The form has been well advertised since with Zaynar coming out and winning the Grade 2 Noel Novices’ Chase by 9 lengths two weeks ago.

Walkon was a more than decent Hurdler winning four times from nine runs including two Grade 1’s and a Grade 2, finishing his career on an Official Rating of 152.

The going at Newbury is Good to Soft and Walkon and he has won and been placed twice from three starts in the going.  He runs over the same trip as his Chasing debut win and on his only other run over today’s distance he finished 2^nd at Ascot by ½ length.

With Choc Thornton being out for three months after he broke his arm two weeks ago, Wayne Hutchinson takes the ride on Walkon.  Wayne has ridden him once before when he won on him at Huntingdon in 2008.  Walkon has run at Newbury twice finishing 2^nd on one occasions and he has won 3 times from 7 starts on left-handed courses.

Walkon has always had plenty of class and he was the best of the field over hurdles.  The way he won was very taking at Exeter.  He was always in control and jumped really well and subsequently won as he wanted.  He has the cut in the ground he needs and is arguably the best 2 ½ mile Novice Chaser that has been out so far this season.

Administration and Finance

• Attracting and Retaining Jobs

  • This past summer, through the provincially funded Summer Company  program, Halton Region’s Small Business Centre worked with 16 young entrepreneursto help them start and grow their own businesses. Summer Company students received cash awards of up to $1500 from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to help pay for start-up costs and up to $1500 at the end of summer as an award for completing the program.
  • Minneapolis-based retailer Target Corporation announced this fall that it would be opening a distribution centre on a 79-acre site on Boston Church Road, just north of Hwy. 401, west of Esquesing Line in Milton. It is estimated that the distribution centre will employ several hundred people and generate several hundred thousand dollars in property taxes for the Town and Region.
  • Siemens Canada announced in August that it will build its new corporate head office in a five-storey, 110,000-square-foot facility on the site located at 1565 North Service Road East in Oakville. The Oakville facility, which will be built to Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards, is expected to employ approximately 800 people. Siemens is the one of the world’s largest and most diversified electrical engineering companies.

• Promoting Tourism

  • Halton Region Museum celebrated the Museum’s 50th anniversary with Alexander Family Farm Day September 18. More than 350 people attended the day which featured activities such as Pioneer Chores & Games, Living as a Blacksmith and Pond Study, musical performances and a Birds of Prey show.
  • Over the past year, Halton Region Museum worked with partners to create an interactive, informative and easy to use online exhibition of the Niagara Escarpment in Halton. “Jeff’s Home” was undertaken in partnership with heritage and education groups in Halton to promote an understanding and respect for Escarpment heritage conservation.

• Emergency Preparedness

  • In September, Halton Region and its emergency management partners tested the Community Emergency Response Plan. Participants responded to a mock emergency, “Exercise Twisted,” a tornado that “touched down” in Oakville. The exercise was part of ongoing efforts to ensure that Halton is a disaster resilient community ready to deal with any potential, imminent or actual emergency.
  • Services for Seniors Division, Halton Region Emergency Management and Oakville Fire Department staged an evacuation that involved a mock fire drill using volunteers. The exercise at Post Inn Village was held to help ensure that Halton Region’s long-term care homes meet the standards for emergency preparedness required by the Long-Term Care Homes Act 2007 . It also supported the efforts of Halton Region’s three long-term care homes – Allendale, Creek Way Village and Post Inn Village – to continue to meet Accreditation Canada Standards .

• Public Engagement

  • Halton Region now offers the latest news about Halton’s museum, tourism and waste management program through several new social media tools that include Twitter, Facebook and a blog. Halton staff will be available on weekdays on all sites to share information and discuss related topics. Halton Region Emergency Management will use Twitter to communicate information in the event of an emergency situation or incident, as well as regularly share emergency preparedness tips.

• Advocacy

  • An advocacy document A Strong Halton for a Strong Ontario – Partners for the Future was developed in advance of the provincial election. The platform set out Halton Region’s position on key issues impacting residents. Candidates were asked to respond to questions about how they would resolve critical issues facing Halton and those responses were posted online. Halton’s advocacy web pages had over 5,200 page views during the provincial election campaign.

Planning and Public Works

• Transportation

  • The following transportation infrastructure projects were completed:
    1. Upper Middle Road is now a four-lane roadway with an upgraded signal at the Bronte Road intersection and new signals at Reeves Gate and Grand Oak Trail.
    2. Completion of Regional Road 25 widening (North Service Road to Upper Middle Road, Oakville). This extensive project received its final paving and is getting a facelift through landscaping and tree plantings on Bronte Road.
    3. To help improve Milton traffic flow, Derry Road was widened to four lanes from Tremaine Road to Bronte Street. Halton also installed new signals at all intersecting streets.

• Infrastructure

  • Oakville South West Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrades were completed on schedule and on budget. This $58 million project, funded by Halton Region and the provincial and federal governments, was completed in September with final landscaping underway.
  • The Todd Road Water Tower in Georgetown has been completed. This new water tower was built to store more water for Georgetown’s current and future population.

• Environmental Protection and Conservation of Water

  • The sixth annual Halton Children’s Water Festival was held from September 27 to 30 with almost 4,000 Halton students from grades two to five participating. The Festival provides children with a unique opportunity to learn about water in a fun and interactive way. The Festival featured nearly 60 activity centres that incorporated four main themes: water science and technology, water conservation and protection, water health and safety and water and society.

• Planning Sustainable Communities

  • In July, Regional Council approved updates to the Best Planning Estimates and Regional Phasing. These two documents together state how the Region is expected to grow over the next 20 years. This is in response to the Provincial Places to grow and implements the Regions Official Plan and Sustainable Halton.

• Defining and Preserving Natural Heritage

  • Halton Region celebrated International Year of Forests with reforestation at the Halton Waste Management Site involving the planting of 4,760 trees, enhancements to the Regional Forests website, and a public hike of the Britton and Robertson Tracts.

Health and Social Services

• Assisting Halton’s Low Income Residents

  • In September, Regional Council approved a 12 month pilot project to cover 50% or more of the cost of monthly bus passes for low income students, adults and seniors in Burlington, Milton and Oakville. The SPLIT pass is being offered in partnership with the transit services in Burlington, Milton and Oakville.

• Children and Youth Development

  • As of August, pregnant women and their partners now have the option to attend prenatal classes or to learn online on their own schedule. The “Gift of Motherhood” is an interactive e-learning program that includes many illustrations, videos, audio with text and quizzes, all designed to help women and their partners prepare for labour, childbirth and caring for their new baby. The program also provides an alternative option for families who are waitlisted due to classes that are at capacity, or for women on bed rest.

• Seniors

  • Post Inn Village Wins Quality Improvement Award. Since March 2010 Post Inn Village has been participating in Residents First , through the Ontario Health Quality Council (OHQC). The Residents First program provides quality improvement education and leadership to the long- term care sector. Post Inn was one of 100 long-term care homes across the province to volunteer to participate in the project. Through the Residents First program, Post Inn Village has reduced the number of resident falls from 24% (June 2010) to 14% (June 2011).
  • The new Continence Clinic at Allendale Long-Term Care Home in Milton seeks to improve the health, wellness and quality of life for seniors by maximizing continence. A nurse specialist with “Nurse Continence Advisor” certification works with seniors 55 years of age and older who live in the community to help them learn to control bladder or bowel issues. The Allendale clinic is part of a Regional Continence Program being funded and managed by the Mississauga-Halton Local Health Integration Network .   • One of the most anticipated events each year at the Adult Day programs is the annual mini-vacation that takes place every September. For the third year in a row 15 clients and staff from Milton Place and Silver Creek Place Adult Day Programs enjoyed outdoor activities, food and accommodations at the Fern Resort in Orillia. Special events included a boat cruise around the Lake Couchiching and a visit to the Police Museum. The Willow Foundation provides funds to cover some of the costs associated with the annual trip, with clients contributing the remaining costs.

• Protecting Public Health

  • Six Halton Region Primary Care Paramedics began advanced care paramedic training on September 19 to ensure Halton EMScontinues to utilize a combination of primary and advanced care paramedics across all areas of Halton Region. Advanced care paramedics are capable of providing a broader range of skills that have been proven to improve patient outcome. The paramedics will complete a seven week course followed by a six week clinical rotation at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital and a 600-hour field preceptorship in Halton Region. The target date for completion of this course is May, 2012.
  • Property has been secured at Derry Rd. and 5th Line for a future EMS station to service the new growth anticipated in East Milton. This new station will be constructed in the next three to five years.
  • Health Department staff offered three pool and spa operator’s courses to help operators understand their legislative responsibilities and to help ensure pools and spas in the Region are maintained in a safe and clean manner. As a result of the demand for this training and positive feedback, the Health Department plans to offer three one-day sessions in 2012
  • As the result of input from various stakeholders in the Halton food service industry, the following initiatives have been implemented:
    1. Food handler study guide is now available for free download at the Region’s website in both English and Simplified Chinese. This created a low cost option for food handler certification.
    2. Food handler resources (i.e., posters) have been translated into the five most commonly observed languages in the food service community in Halton. The posters are available for free printing at the Health Department online resource database.
    3. On-line registration for Food Safety Education and Certification Program was launched in May 2011.
    4. The Food Safety Guidelines for Food Banks (753KB) was created in collaboration with community food providers and is available for free download.

• Promoting Healthy Living

  • walkON is a program that supports the creation of well-designed, compact communities where people can walk to school, work, stores, parks, and restaurants, and need to drive less. A walkON information session was held at the Bronte Youth Centre for local youth and a follow-up workshop is planned for early November. The program is continuing to build a reputation of community empowerment and change for making communities safe and walkable.
