one thing our house is severely lacking is wall art. other than our diplomas and a mass-produced art piece available at any Target store (i think the price is wrong on the link), we’ve got just about nothing on the walls to give pops of color or piques of interest.

Rocky Top Studio in Maine has no shortage of beautiful and artistic photographs. their serene scenes and amazing photography of birds in flight. the surroundings of the studio look so dreamy! i would love to cover my walls with their amazing artwork. here are a few of my favorites:

for the black and white artwall: Chickadee in Snow No. 3

another amazing aerial shot: Goldfinches in Snow No. 3

beautifully soft colors paired with the perfect blend of focus and fuzz: Droplets No. 2

soft blues and yellows, perfect for any baby’s nursery: St. John’s Wort

hope you got some inspiration from those lovely shots! i’m inspired to buy a couple prints!

I’m not even going to discuss my lack of daily photos. I will share my latest photographic en

I’m not even going to discuss my lack of daily photos. I will share my latest photographic endeavor, however.

We are NOT done with the bathroom, but all that is left is painting trim and wainscoting. Not that bad- almost done and then you’ll see the finished project- next week if all goes well. However- with 18 people coming over for Thanksgiving, I need to get that bathroom in usable order. We have all the neccessary things working and the walls painted. I had 3 Ikea Ribba frames needing artwork suitable for the bathroom and it would be nice to have something up on the walls.

While perusing my pics, I kept noticing my pets. I have a lot of bad quality photos with funny expressions and it hit me. I could make these watercolors or frescoes- or comics. The “blur” wouldn’t matter! And they’d be colorful and humorous photos for the walls…. and so….

my quest for distorted faces began….

and it has become an obsession….

I’ve got so many prints now (and only 3 frames) it might turn into a seasonal gallery of photos that change quarterly.

For those of you who would like to try this at home, it’s quite easy. My tips are for Photoshop Elements. You want to be sure you are resize the image to 300 dpi- and crop to the size you want to make (in this case, 8×10). I also upped the saturation so the colors look a little more artsy. Then I used the “watercolor” preset- fiddling with the settings until I liked the effect.

Then I uploaded to Costco and picked them up the next day. So easy!!! And so much fun! Surprisingly, Keith even liked the idea (i was afraid he wouldn’t!).

If you do this, let me know with a comment and a link to your photo!

There is something irresistible about instant gratification that comes out of such a quick and enjoyable process. Making sculptures is so involved and slow and exhausting, it’s great to be able to indulge myself into light projects from time to time.

Title : “Squished”, guess it’s obvious why!

Stella Artois in New York are splashing life in to wall painting as part of its latest art/advertisi

Stella Artois in New York are splashing life in to wall painting as part of its latest art/advertising campaign. The ritual project is a series of 21 images painted over 21 days on a giant brick wall, with the finished effect at the end planned as a stop motion video of the perfect pour (all be it on a huge scale). So far we are 14 days and counting in to the action, with each day bringing a the task of covering up the previous image, repainting the wall, then stepping back to admire all the teams hard work.

The really neat touch to this campaign comes from the follow-up work around the edges, with telescope viewpoints placed strategically around the area to help passers-by get a close in view on the live experience. This is combined with the dedicated website giving bite sized history on the lost art of wall painting and other areas. If you take a look through the online pages you can see day by day updates of how far they have got in video format, or if you have a bit more time check out the journal section which goes lots of great background on the progress. Rather than just reading here about it though head on over to The Ritual Project and have a look for yourself!

Yes, the rain is here in Seattle at last. But still, I am painting in springlike tones and the theme

Yes, the rain is here in Seattle at last. But still, I am painting in springlike tones and the theme I’ve just completed is butterflies. Go figure. My brain yearns for spring even though I am content with fall in Seattle.

At first I am happy to see it, the gray slight drizzle is easy to ignore. You just wear a hat and remind yourself that this year you really need to buy some rubber boots. But so far this year, Seattle has had more heavy rains – what I like to call East Coast rain – and you really need to have an umbrella.

For me that is no problem. I believe I currently have six umbrella’s: Kermit the Frog (Happy 40th Anniversary Sesame Street!), small basic black, even smaller red that fits inside a bag, large long red, fancy decorated one that belonged to my grandmother which she handed me one of the last times I saw her when we were driving away in a truck and loading up things from her garage, and my current favorite glow in the dark flourescent yellow/green (StrideLite with lamp). That last umbrella is my current favorite because it has a lamp. Why don’t all umbrella’s have lamps? This is an ingenious invention that I don’t mind promoting. Not even sure the company is still around.

In any case, I am here in my studio while the sun is setting at 4:31 pm and I am painting butterflies, making some custom picture frames, dreaming of a house with a fireplace which will materialize very soon, and happy knowing that I’ll have a bright umbrella to guide my way home.
