That’s the advice from Buddy Media‘s “Strategies for Effective Wall Posts: A Timeline Analysis,” a report based on activity from 1,800 of the world’s biggest brand pages from April 1 to May 31.

As with previous Buddy Media reports on the subject, the analysis found that marketers are still posting too little on weekends and at night and when they do post, they’re way too verbose.

Weekends, when brands post too little, the audience appears primed for interaction, though it varies by industry. For “advertising and consulting,” for example, weekend posts get 69% higher interaction, but only 11% of posts are published on Saturday and Sunday. Not every industry has the same pattern, though: Thursday is the biggest day of the week for “clothing and fashion” while Monday is the biggest for “general retail.”

In general, though, Hump Day is the worst day to post; interactions on Wednesday are 7.4% lower than average.

Once again, the study also found that off-hours are the best time to post. Brand posts between 8 pm and 7 am got 14% higher interaction than those published between 8 am and 7 pm.

Meanwhile, when it comes to posts, less is more. Brands that post one or two times a day see 19% higher interaction rates than those that publish three or more posts. “The key is not to bombard fans with too many posts, as Facebook News Feed optimization often penalizes for this,” the report cautions.

And while Twitter has a 140-character limit, Buddy Media suggests a self-imposed 80-character wall for Facebook posts. Such posts get a 23% higher interaction than longer posts. However, 75% of posts are beyond that limit. It’s also a good idea to run photos — photo posts get 39% higher interaction rates than average. Text-only posts aren’t a bad option either, though: They get a 12% higher-than-average rate. Video and link posts appear to be the worst option: They have lower-than-average interaction rates.

Among the other recommendations:

• Use links with a recognizable URL, like “www.shop.com/umbrellas” where users have an idea of what to expect.
• Asking a question is a good idea, but ask it at the end of your comment, not at the beginning. Posts with a question at the end have a 15% higher overall interaction rate and a 2X higher comment rate than those with a question asked in the middle of the post.
• Ask fans to caption a picture. Posts that ask readers to “caption this” get 5.5X higher comment rates than average. Such posts also increase the overall interaction rate by more than 100%.
• “Fill in the blank” is another good option. Such posts garner 4X more comments than average.
• Use emoticons: Posts that contain emoticons receive 52% higher interaction rates. Posts that employ them have a 57% higher like rate,a 33% higher comment rate and 33% higher share rate.
• The best emoticons to use: “:D” and “:P.” Such emoticons have a 2.4X and 2X higher response rate, respectively than other emoticons.
• Use a call to action. Posts with commands like “Like,” “Caption This,” “Share,” “Yes or No” and “True or False” get interaction rates that are 48% higher than average.

On September 25th all roads were leading to the Ngong race course.Mad traffic was witnessed on the famous Ngong road,but that dint stop Kenyans from heading there.After spending hours o the traffic,i finally arrived there.,just like any other Kenyan,i paid for my ticket.Security was tight..Ngong race course was full of elegant cars,!!the only problem was us photographers could hardly get a good shot of a car because of the huge mob that stood around the cars…anyway,after twisting my camera from one angle to another,i managed to get some shots…all thanks to my zoom button…he-he..anyway guys…I’m going to post a sneak preview of the cars that were there…

i have a problem with this. when i drink, i sometimes say things i don’t mean, do things i later regret, and even lose relationships i value. so i have to say “goodbye” and really, alcohol, it’s not you, it’s me.

i posted about this on facebook as well.  my facebook friends and wordpress friends have been universally supportive.  i have been so lucky.  and then i got to thinking:

since facebook went public, it has been working very hard to show advertisers and investors that its greatest asset is information about its users.  and a mighty big asset.  sure, it’s interesting that you posted psy’s gangnam style video on your wall and that your cat pictures are soooooooooo damn cute.  but there’s a little more to it.  facebook wants to be able to “share” information about users that will predict spending habits, future needs, even weaknesses that can be exploited by corporate america.

facebook is working with a company called datalogix.  datalogix collects information from retailers using customer loyalty cards and combines this information with things like your regular email address, your alma mater, or postal address that show up in other data bases.  datalogix is not some new kid in the data world–it owns information about almost every american household and $1 trillion in consumer transactions. combining information about consumers allows advertising to be targeted very precisely.

i admit to unnatural lust for the diane von furstenberg copa wrap skirt in orchid. datalogix knows this and can even figure out if i  ever purchase it online or offline. and it can also predict what other items i might lust for. but does it know i lust for the white wine? of course.  even if i hadn’t posted about it, i did put a deposit down on a detox program with my credit card.

depending on how you feel about privacy and about sensitive personal issues, you might feel alarmed.  the only fear i have is that blue cross blue shield is going to suddenly raise my premiums or drop me altogether because i’m seeking help.

and then there’s this:  facebook holds a key to your history, your relationships, your emotions and your past. the idea that forgotten private messages might be made public and be prominently displayed for the world to see could be a frightening prospect for many users.  but that’s exactly what’s happened.

facebook has acknowledged reports, mainly from america and europe, claiming that private messages from prior to 2009 have been popping up on people’s walls.  ouch, that morning after passed out on the couch picture from 2008 that you thought nobody would remember is now out there on your timeline.  the company says there’s has been no breach, claiming instead that the messages were merely old public posts revealed again by a bug.  a little hard to decipher.

i guess i don’t believe in privacy anymore.  everyone can find out anything about anyone.  but i also believe in trying very hard to live one’s life with . . .

well, at least i try to!  and if i were to succeed, then i wouldn’t have to care who knows what about me.

 

i am facing an interesting, challenging, terrifying time and i am grateful beyond measure to every friend who has said “i’m with you!”  many many many thanks!

Today we got another good lesson in why it’s important to know what you have on your Facebook wall. Rumors circled the globe today saying that Facebook accidentally published private messages to users’ Timelines. The social network says that’s not the case.

The rumors started in France when users noticed a box on their Timelines that says, “[Number] friends posted on [Person's] Timeline.” (See image right for example.) Users were mostly concerned with the boxes in years 2009 and earlier, which supposedly contained the “exposed” private messages. Instead, Facebook says users are really just seeing their old wall posts from a time when we were a little more comfortable sharing in public. The social network sent a statement to the press:

A small number of users raised concerns after what they mistakenly believed to be private messages appeared on their Timeline. Our engineers investigated these reports and found that the messages were older wall posts that had always been visible on the users’ profile pages. Facebook is satisfied that there has been no breach of user privacy.

Additionally, Facebook told TechCrunch that it had checked on reports of private messages being exposed:

Every report we’ve seen, we’ve gone back and checked. We haven’t seen one report that’s been confirmed [of a private message being exposed]. A lot of the confusion is because before 2009 there were no likes and no comments on wall posts. People went back and forth with wall posts instead of having a conversation [in the comments of single wall post.]

BuzzFeed makes the point that Facebook was once a much smaller community, and we were much more likely to share intimate details in the public eye in 2009 and before. We believed only friends could see them and if not only friends, your school network. No big deal. But today, with nearly a billion people on Facebook, everyone can see the wall posts and Timeline doesn’t do a great job of organizing our old Facebook lives.

The old wall posts in question seem random and disjointed in users’ Timelines because, back in the day, Facebook didn’t support threaded comments on wall posts. People simply went back and forth between walls, responding to their various friends. Because of this the wall posts today look more like messages than they do a public conversation — and because of the lack of threading, those messages may appear completely out of context.

But this really brings to light a deeper issue that just about everyone has with the Internet: we don’t know what’s on it.

If you were an early Facebook adopter, go read your messages in 2007, 2006, and 2005. You’ll discover the embarrassing, personal, sensitive, and private information you have saved there. It’ll get a little weird, but it’s worth the exercise to know what could leak out. We’ll call it social spring cleaning, and we know you all do it for your old friendships. (You know that status update that says, “I’m getting rid of all of you! Make your case to stay my friend here!”) But it’s worth going through messages, photos, check-ins, likes, and more just to know what you’ve got, if not to get rid of it.

Facebook is a giant shoebox of your memories. It also happens to be mostly public. Clean that sucker out.
