value.

The concept is simple…

Very simple…

In his classic masterpiece, “The Science of Getting Rich”,
Wallace D. Wattles put it this way:

“Give every man more in use value than you take from him in
cash value; then you are adding to the life of the world by
every business transaction.”

In spite of its simplicity, over the last several years I’ve
discovered there are three big misconceptions concerning it,
any one of which could be standing directly between you and
the financial success you’re seeking.

Here they are…

Misconception #1 – It only works one way.

Some people want use value, more often than not lots of it,
without giving anything in return for it.

In other words…

They want something for nothing.

Question…

If you take something for nothing, are you adding to the
life of the world by that transaction or are you taking away
from the life of the world by that transaction?

Think about it.

And while you’re thinking about it…

Here’s something for you to ponder…

In an article he wrote titled “Abundance”, the third of
three articles in his “The Law of Opulence” series, Wallace
D. Wattles wrote:

“… desire for everybody what you desire for yourself, and
be sure to take nothing from anybody without giving a full
equivalent in life; and the more you give the better for
you.”

Misconception #2 – It doesn’t apply to me.

Many people mistakenly believe the concept of giving more in
use value than you receive in cash value only applies if
they own their own business.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

I hear comments all the time that go something like this:

“Right now I’m working for someone else so I’m doing just
enough to get by, but when I get my own business *then* I’m
really going to put everything I’ve got into it.”

Guess what?

Ain’t gonna happen!

The Universe doesn’t work that way.

Only when you’re making constructive use of what you have
now will the Universe trust you with more.

Here’s the deal…

If you work for someone else, you sell your services to your
employer.

In other words…

Your employer *is* your customer!

If you want your own business, start by giving your
“customer” more in use value than you take from them in cash
value.

Then…

And only then…

Will the Universe begin moving you toward the business you
want and it toward you.

Misconception #3 – I have to give things away free.

This one never ceases to amaze me…

There are a whole lot of folks out there, either because
they feel guilty making a profit or because they’ve bought
into some Internet “new economy” nonsense, who sincerely
believe if they just run around the countryside and give
enough “stuff” away free they’ll somehow be magically
blessed with riches.

Nowhere in his writings did Wallace D. Wattles ever say
that, nor did he ever say anything even close to that.

As a matter of fact…

He said quite the opposite.

Notice, if you will, Wallace D. Wattles *didn’t* write:

“Give every man more in cash market value than you take from
him in cash value; then you are adding to the life of the
world by every business transaction.”

He wrote:

“Give every man more in use value than you take from him in
cash value; then you are adding to the life of the world by
every business transaction.”

Many people have this backwards.

The bottom line is this…

If you want financial success…

Give every person with whom you deal *more* in use value
than you take from them in cash value.

Then…

As Wallace D. Wattles also wrote in “Abundance”:

“Everything that comes to you will mean more life to someone
else. Each gain you make will add to the wealth of someone
else. What you get for yourself – life – you get for all.
Your success adds to the life, health, wealth and happiness
of all.”

Does Bud believe there is a ”shortness in the supply of riches?” 

It’s a hard question to answer.  His actions demonstrate he may have been victim to the belief that there is a shortness of riches.  He started out well enough.  Signs indicate he was hard working, wanted to make it on his own, wanted to prove he had “insight” that others did not demonstrate.  I think in his young state, naive if you will, he thought his dogged determination would carry him through to the outcome he desired – MONEY. 

When he meets Gordon, it’s as if he says good-bye to his innocence and gives in to Gordon’s way of doing business.  He lets go of his “work hard” ethic and moves into “work smart.”  Of course, to Bud, “work smart” means doing things Gordon’s way – getting information by whatevert means is possible and leveraging the information.

To read the strategy by itself, it doesn’t sound all that bad.  Unfortunately for Bud and Gordon, it’s an illegal strategy in the world of investing.

If Bud had truly believed in the abundance of riches, he may have been able to see that wealth unencumbered was available to him.  Perhaps he could have found a way to leverage Gekko’s power legally.

Wallace states in Chapter 2 that “Getting rich is not a matter of environment, for, if it were, all the people in certain neighborhoods would become wealthy; the people of one city would all be rich, while those of another would all be poor; or the inhabitants of one state would roll in wealth, while those of an adjoining state would be in poverty.” He goes on to state that getting rich boils down to doing things THE “certain way.”

It’s a good point. We all know those in professions who work hard and do well and those who work hard and barely get by. In Bud’s case we find that he worked hard but…felt that “to be a player” you had to be in the city and you had to have Gordon Gekko as a client. His belief in that drove him to rise early daily, make the daily “Gekko” call and stay poor until he got to meet and work with the great Gekko.

One wonders what opportunities Bud missed having such a single vision of what success would be for him. Had he read the book and expanded his mind to embrace THE “certain way” of obtaining riches, perhaps he would have gotten to keep them, faced Gekko in battle one day and become the victor rather than the victim.

He and the players around him proved Wattles’ theory in Chapter 2: “Talented people get rich and blockheads get rich.”

If I am honest, I have to admit that even though I was raised with the idea that we wanted to have money, there was equal time given to scoffing at the rich.  Basically, since we were of average income at best, it was easier to laugh at those that were well off than figure out why we weren’t well off.

I think many of us are raised with these comments.  It’s easier to accept what you don’t have when you find fault with those who do have.

And so, our examination begins.

There is a wonderful line in Wall Street where Bud Fox looks at his dad and says, “There is no nobility in poverty.”  Would it surprise you to find out this is exactly how Wallace D. Wattles opens his 1910 classic, The Science of Getting Rich? 

“It is perfectly right that you should desire to be rich; if you are a normal man or woman, you cannot help doing so.  It is perfectly right that you should give your best attention to The Science of Getting Rich, for it is the noblest and most necessary of all studies.  If you neglect this study, you are derelict in your duty to yourself, to God and to humanity; for you can render to God and humanity no greater service that to make the most of yourself.” W D Wattles, TSofGR

Bud had the right idea.  He wanted to be rich.  Where things fell apart, I think, is that he didn’t know WHY he wanted to be rich.  You see, Wattles tells us that this is how we can serve our fellow man – having the most to give.  Bud wants it and wants to experience all that money can buy – but other than that – he really doesn’t have a plan for what his life will be about when he does have money.

He’s on A road to getting rich, but not the BEST road to getting rich. His road is leading him only to money, and not true riches that may include an abundance of money.

In life people have dreams of being rich, owning a big house, driving a nice car, etc,etc. But does money really buy you happiness?  Maybe for the short time that you are here on Earth. The true riches I am talking about can only be found at your final destination. I sit here with a book that was bought for me by a friend. He bought it at a bargain of a price at Barnes and Noble for $7.98. It is called The Science Of Success by Wallace D. Wattles. Within the book lies a wealth of information. Here is a quote from Wattles “He must keep in mind the Purpose to get rich through the realization of his mental image. And he must do, every day, all that can be done that day, taking care to act in a successful manner.” I would have to say my big dream started out as a big joke one night while I sat in the nursery of the hospital. It was a busy night for the nursery nurses. Most of the babies were bottle fed that night. I held a baby in my arms and proceeded to give the baby it’s bottle. As always the conversations between the nurses varied and then I said…….Someday I want to be a doula. I told them about a conversation I had with a local doula. She actually made more money than I did for one night of work after taxes. I said something is wrong with that picture. The nursery nurses joked around if they could come and work for me when I started my business. They asked me what I would name my business and I said ___________. Fast forward to today. Today I am close to my vision of owning my own business. There are certain things that need to be done. I have found a great mentor and I am learning something new all the time. The business of childbirth is ever changing. Although the process is the same. The new way is to empower women in the journey through childbirth. Doulas are leading the way.

Wallace D. Wattles w “Naukowej metodzie wzbogacania się” bazuje właśnie na tej myśli. Jeżeli wzbogacam się w sposób twórczy, dając ludziom więcej wartości użytkowej niż biorę od nich zapłaty w pieniądzu, to czyż nie wzbogacam wszystkich? Nie bezpośrednio, ale pośrednio właśnie.

Nie ma tutaj mowy o wyrzekaniu się życia, o poświęcaniu się, cierpieniu… Jest za to mowa o tworzeniu, wzrastaniu, rozwijaniu się, zdobywaniu mocy, inspirowaniu współbraci.

Nie znam wspanialszego sposobu na własną ewolucję, ulepszanie świata i niesienie pomocy ludziom, jak właśnie ten – przez wzbogacanie się “Naukową metodą“.

A most remarkable thing happened on May 11, 2009.

On that day, in The Alive with Clive TV Show MagEzine, I announced that I would be presenting The First Alive with Clive Top 20 Concert at Waltz-Astoria featuring three musical performers in The Alive with Clive Top 20.

The purpose of this concert is to continue to raise awareness about The Alive with Clive Top 20 and my goal to raise at least a billion dollars, for people suffering from AIDS in South Africa, from the sale of the Alive with Clive compilation CD (or a downloadable version) featuring a song from each musician who ends up in The Alive with Clive Top 20 on the day voting ends.

Through a remarkable coincidence, in a Press Release dated May 11, 2009, too, (RED) and Live Nation, the largest producer of live concerts in the world, announced that they are collaborating to link acclaimed artists, including Santigold, Gomez, O.A.R., Fall Out Boy, Lisa Hannigan, The Veronicas and The All-American Rejects, with their fans through the creation of (RED)NIGHTS, a series of 26 live concerts at select Live Nation clubs and theaters in the U.S. to raise money and awareness for the ultimate goal of eliminating AIDS in Africa.

As noted in their Press Release:

Bringing the (RED) experience to life in a new way, (RED)NIGHTS and the community of participating artists will come together to use great live music to raise awareness of (RED)’s primary objective – to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.  With each live show, (RED)NIGHTS hopes to inspire fans to participate in (RED)’s mission, highlight the many ways to get involved beyond the concert and encourage people to share the message and experience with others.  Ultimately, it is the goal of (RED)NIGHTS to build a community – of artists, concertgoers and music fans everywhere – that is passionate about helping to save lives in Africa.  A portion of the proceeds of each (RED)NIGHTS concert goes directly to the Global Fund (theglobalfund.org).

Skeptics may doubt that 26 concerts will do much good, but in my opinion this announcement by RED and Live Nation, which produces over 22,000 concerts for 1,600 artists in 33 countries a year, and sold over 50 million concert tickets and drove over 70 million unique visitors to LiveNation.com during 2008, represents a GIANT step in the fight to eliminate AIDS in Africa.

Here’s why:

When you look around and see the kinds of people who are able to generate massive support for different causes, you’ll realize that musicians who are famous have the power to create a major impact in a short amount of time.

Look back at major concert events in history:  Live Aid in 1985, Live 8 in 2005 and Live Earth in 2007, for example, were all made possible by the immense popularity of the musicians involved.

So, when you become aware of the forces involved here, it quickly becomes apparent that musicians more than any other group have the capacity to cause major enhancements in living conditions all over the world – if their power is harnessed in the right way.

I am therefore pleased to see the announcement about the (RED)NIGHTS concerts because it represents a manifestation that influential executives in the entertainment industry and philanthropic circles are beginning to deploy this power possessed by musicians to make a sustained and powerful difference in the world systematically and synergistically.

Alive with Clive’s Clive Believes (RED)NIGHTS Live Nation Concerts Are A GIANT Step To Combat AIDS!

In a recent announcement, (RED) and Live Nation announced that 26 upcoming concerts will go (RED) to help combat AIDS in Africa.  Skeptics might be wondering how much good it will do to have 26 concerts go (RED).  But Clive Swersky, host and producer of Alive with Clive and creator of The Alive with Clive Top 20 believes that the announcement to have these concerts go (RED) represents a GIANT step on the road to the elimination of AIDS in Africa.

Last year, Clive announced his intention to raise at least a billion dollars for people suffering from AIDS in South Africa from the sale of a compilation CD (or a downloadable version) featuring songs of musicians he has interviewed on Alive with Clive who end up in The Alive with Clive Top 20 on the date voting ends, so he has been paying close attention to actions being taken by (RED) to eliminate AIDS in Africa.

This concert will feature three musical performers from The Alive with Clive Top 20:  Anthony Melillo and The Melillo Brothers, Serotenen, and Jessica Labus.  Anthony Melillo, who recently released his debut CD, Just Gettin’ Started, has been at the top of The Alive with Clive Top 20 since it’s inception.  Serotonen is currently in sixth place and Jessica Labus is 11th.

Today I went in search of a book about a woman entrepreneur at Border’s and though unable to find the book despite concerted efforts by a staff member there, whose spirit reminded me of greater things than the tasks he was being curtly reminded of, I found instead this book “The Science of Being Great” by Wallace D. Wattles, an influential writer in the late nineteenth century. A small paperback, roughly 130ish odd pages, tucked away in the “Business Life” section.

I thought upon spontaneously picking up this book, why not? What is it to be great? How does one become great? Wallace’s writing interested me from the moment I sat down to read the first few lines.

Succinct, to the point. Poised and powerful.

The words leapt off the page at me.

I am thirsty.

I hunger for some knowledge.

Life is confusing.

It has been a hard year but a good one too.

I have learned many things and unlearned many things and no one, no matter how sweet and wonderful, could protect me from often harsh experiences.

And from that, what? I think I needed resistance sufficiently to finally scream and throw things down (internally) to decide: What am I doing with my life? What’s the point? What now? How?…I digress..

Let me return to the book again. This book is powerful, it is delightful, it incites you to action. It speaks of things I have been thinking about, conversations that I have had with others yet not known the answers to.

Love. What is it?

Compassion.

Yes, I can see this physical body that I have. I can experience these thoughts of my mind, ever changing, ever acting.

But what of Spirit? Spirit does not compel you to action, to thought, to everything?

I think about God. What is God? I thirst to know.

God is mysterious.

Wallace writes, “Nothing that is possible in spirit is impossible in flesh and blood.”

He speaks of a world that is “perfect and incomplete,” rather than a civilization that is dying or in need of perpetual rescue.

The first is positive, uplifting, and expansive in its embrace while the latter confines, restricts, and warns of doom. For example, he offers the root of a lily and how that can be unsightly:” But how foolish should we be to condemn the bulb for its appearance when we know the lily is within it.”

I remember being in first grade and our teacher showed us how to make impressions of coins on paper, rubbing the sides of the paper over the coin with a black crayon. I was thrilled to see the face of Abraham Lincoln show up on my paper. It thrilled me no end. I felt I was bringing some part of him back to life so I spent hours at home that evening happily filling many pages with his impression.

Wallace drew me in because of his ability to describe the human condition in gentle, compassionate, and deeply positive ways and his ability of fine discernment. I only wish I could have met him and hugged him.He explains that which befuddles and confuses me, and swiftly addresses topics that have caused me anguish with clarity and great insight. He leads you so clearly to understand and to appreciate life.

Greatness. What is it?

Compassion, kindness, clear thinking, decisive actions, humility, the willingness to serve, the recognition of beauty, goodness, and divinity in everyone.

I think about Lincoln again. Lincoln was just beautiful. How can you resist such a man who acted with such kindness and from Spirit?

From Wallace: “Do not let other people decide what you are to be. Be what you feel that you want to be.“And then this: “You will manifest greatness only when you begin to stand alone. Dismiss all thoughts of reliance on externals, whether things, books, or people. As Emerson said, ‘Shakespeare will never be made by the study of Shakespeare.’ Shakespeare will be made by the thinking of Shakespearean thoughts.

“When my dear beloved Rosie, my dog and faithful companion for eight years, died this past May 2007, I felt my heart break into two. I thought the world was an unforgiving place. A Light that I knew had been blown out. The best Love that I have ever experienced – joyous, faithful, ever positive, ever believing, ever trusting – had left me. So many people had said to me (they were well-meaning but did not understand), “It’s just a dog, Jan. You can get another one.”

Rosie? Rosie was and is so much more than that!

I did not know what to say. Rosie was so much more than a dog.

If a dog has limitations in our world wrought upon by our current society conditions, then Rosie tried her best to live out her full creative expression as best as she could. She was loving, kind, compassionate, beautiful, and wonderful always.

She showed me what Love is everyday. What more could I ask for? The Spirit within her was divine. When I cry and miss her, I still know in my heart that every minute she had with me was joyous and good. She focused on the best part of me and every person she had an interaction with. That is just incredible. It brought out the best in people.

I think that divine spirit within her that beauty…I have experienced so deeply. How glorious is that? What must it be then like to experience God?Spirit of white and gold…I wonder what it is that William Blake saw. Perhaps he felt that.

Our spirits within us, that compel us to grow, to learn, to question, to try…to love…I think that that is part of the Spirit.
