his ‘moving island’, built by Wally’s President and CEO Luca Bassani Antivari as well as Hermes artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas allows man to travel with unsurpassed comfort and spaciousness. A luxurious on-ground villa, that offers to its residents the comfort, spaciousness and interior flexibility but yet immobile? Or a limited in space and wavering but at the same time capable of transferring you to any place you want yacht?  That could always be the question faced by clients of the luxury leisure sector.  Trying to address this issue while simultaneously implementing the know-how and craftsmanship of both companies, the Monaco-based yacht maker Wally and the luxury French brand Hermès, created WHY – a state-of the-art vessel, for which the idea of the hull was initially taken from a seismic vessel, and was redesigned and adapted to the needs of the sea. The outcome was a super-luxurious yacht which measures 58 meters long and 38 meters wide and can accommodate 12 guests and 20 crew members. The interior of the yacht follows the high standards of the design companies and is fitted out with water resistant leather, whereas wood is used in most of the interior areas of the vessel.  The total 3.400m² guest surface areas, is divided into three different levels containing all rooms that could be found in a luxury villa such as lounges, dining rooms, libraries and spa areas. The yacht has been tested under various conditions and the outcome is that under unfavourable weather conditions it remains more stable than any other of its type, and when anchored it creates a flat surface behind it where swimmers feel as if they are in an Olympic-sized pool.

Since the aim of the project is to create a boat that imitates the specifications of a luxury villa but also has the advantages of a boat, it also means that the vessel must be so stable so that the guests can engage in the same activities as they would on the ground.  WHY’s ability to offer this, is probably proved by the fact that it carries around it a real jogging track inspired by coastal paths! What is extraordinary about this concept is that despite its lavishness, superior design and cutting-edge nautical technologies it is also environmentally ethical both in terms of the choice of its design materials and energy consumption.  WHY requires less power at cruising speed than a boat of equal size whereas it also carries a wind-turbine system and a rectangle mast that produces approximately 30% of the energy used to propel the boat. This venture makes us happy not only because it constitutes a masterwork in terms of technology and design but also because it can set the example for future eco-friendly nautical conceptions. It has been described by the former as having the ‘freedom of the yacht with the space of a property’. Perhaps another one of the many compelling reasons to own this yacht is that it is environmentally friendly. The Wally Hermes Yacht (WHY) is equipped with state-of-art sustainable technology and it uses recyclable thermal energy, making travelling on the WHY guilt-free. The WHY which is 58m x 38m wide is delineated with continuous fluid lines that perpetrates a strong sense of fluidity and flow. The interior decoration primarily uses sustainable wood in nude, neutral shades that contrasts with the heavily tainted roof of the vessel. It has a master space, a guest space, a common space and a 50m pool located at the top deck. The master bedroom has a retractable roof that opens to unravel a breath-taking sight of the expansive sea. Unlike most cruise ships, this WHY is meant to travel; it is capable of going up to 14 knots. Well, we suppose it’s not just a mere island. This beauty leaves us in sheer wonderment and saying WHY not? WHY Wally-Hermès Yachts is the new company created by french luxury brand Hermès and Monaco based yacht maker Wally, dedicated to a new lifestyle of living on the sea. Designing a boat with a new concept is not an utopia. At every turn the yacht offers maximum space, durability and cutting-edge technologies. The exchange with Wally and Hermès was rooted deeply in terms of know how and sharing the same philosophy of this new concept. Hermès was involved in every step of the process from concept to realization, considering both the outside and inside were just one of the many things. as always just like with all their designs they paid special attention to detail, developing the overall architecture of the vessel evaluating issues of speed and spaciousness.

The initial idea of this hull was confirmed by the ram form hull which they discovered, redesigned and adapted to fit the concept of the wheel house that emerges from the silhouette of the ship. The interior of the yacht is fitted out with water resistant buffalo leather using the calpinage technique. The yacht which took years in the making has been tested in Goteborg, Sweden, in a specialized tank testing facility, to see how it would perform in big seas. The outcome is that, in full swell, the bow moves a tiny bit and the stern stays completely still. Anchored, the boat creates a totally flat surface behind it, like an Olympic-size pool where you can swim in total peace. On the bow, there’s a seawater pool 25 meters long that follows the curve of the bow. The environmental and ecological advantages are a strong point of the boat WHY. Different sources of energy are managed by a central computer. The yacht is powered using a diesel electric engine. A surface of the photovoltaic panels which measure approximately 900 square meters provide the solar electricity generated which covers part of what is needed to subsist the boat. The Goosebumps series never fails to take me back to the times when were still kids and afraid of monsters and the like. This one is no different and as always, the best part I like about the books is the way it never has an end at the end. It leaves so much scope for more imagination and that is the fun part of it.

DESCRIPTION:

Slappy stared down in amazement at the dummy stretched out in the crate. There was no mistaking it. The dummy was his identical twin.

“Where’d you get that piece of junk?” he demanded sarcastically. But his eyes darted nervously from side to side.

Jimmy O’ James carefully picked up the new dummy and a yellowed stack of papers. “I found him in a magic store. And these instructions tell how to bring this other dummy to life – and how to put you to sleep forever!”

O projeto é nadamaisnadamenas que uma mansão sob a água.  Com 58 metros de comprimento e 35 de largura o WHY consegue acomodar 12 convidados e 20 membros da tripulação. O interior é mega luxuoso e conta com sofás revestidos de couro impermeável e chão de madeira resistente à água. Acreditem a área habitável do barco é de 3.400m²(!) divididos em três andares, que possuem além de salas de jantar, cinema, spa, lounges e bibliotecas, claro.

WHY 58*38 yacht is the first child of the joint venture between the Parisian fashion house, Hèrmes and Wally, a Monaco yacht brand ever since it was started in 2008. This space-age looking boat is capable of housing up to 20 crew and 12 guests. 

To make it environmentally friendly, they have used photovoltaic panels on the sides of the hull and the roof to convert sun ray to electricity.

Sometimes there are things that just break the mould, things that everyone thinks its not possible, things people may think but are not brave enough to take the plunge, well there is a company that lives on that edge of imagination and makes it a reality. Welcome to the world of Wally!

Although around for a few years now the Wally 118 is nothing short of sensational and would still be the head turner amongest superyachts lined up in Monaco. Her design is futuristic and simplistic to the eye but underneath she oozes technological advances that are still not seen on some of the newly launched super yachts.

Luca Bassani’s Wally Yachts are not just an exercise in styling, it is in fact driven by some of the most demanding technical challenges ever taken on by a boatbuilder.

Genuinely new and high-tech, from her engine room to her folding radar mast, the Wallypower 118 has carbon, glass, and honeycomb construction, a superbly minimalist Euro interior by Lazzarini & Pickering, and a nearly 60-knot top speed. Scale models were tank tested at SSPA in Sweden and in Ferrari’s wind tunnel at Marinello, Italy. Intermarine, the renowned warship builder, built her. As a conscious re-evaluation of what express motoryachts should be like, she’s entitled to look a little out of the ordinary.

The 118 is an express motoryacht with berths for six guests in three en suite staterooms and six crew, and her accommodations are arranged symmetrically on each side of a straight, central corridor in that unique angular hull. The tender garage—in the bow—is revealed when a triangular section of the foredeck lifts, dead level, on three hydraulic rams. Just forward of the superstructure is an inset seating area, which can be shaded by a bimini top. That mysterious glass-sided deckhouse shelters a capacious saloon aft, with white upholstery, plain wood surfaces, and a seductive, beach-house ambience. The dining table sits amidships, just aft of the helm, made of carbon fiber.

The 118 has a CODOG (combined diesel or gas) propulsion system—jet engines for speed, diesels for everything else—common on small warships, but rare on yachts this give her the ability to hit that magic 60knot mark with ease.

While gas turbines offer tremendous power-to-weight benefits (3.6 hp per pound in the TF50s), they do have a downside, as one British Harrier pilot discovered not long ago in 100-plus-degree conditions in the Persian Gulf, when his breathless aircraft landed in the sea beside the carrier. Although the Wallypower is unlikely to suffer such drastic consequences, jet-engine output typically declines by about 0.5 percent for every 1ºF increase in air temperature. The Wallypower uses three DDC TF50s (maritime cousins of the Chinook helicopter engine) driving three KaMeWa waterjets. Their 5,600 hp is calibrated at a lab temperature of 59°F—a little different from an August afternoon in Florida. However hot it gets, though, the 118 should always be able to cruise at 40 knots without effort. Not many 100-footers can make that claim. 

There is a more conventional engine option as well: twin 3,650-hp MTU 4000 V16 diesels, which Bassani claims will give the boat a 45-knot top speed and around a 40-knot cruise speed. Go for these, and you’ll also save about $8 million on the asking price (which is $16.55 million when the yacht is equipped with twin diesels, $24.83 million as tested above, with triple gas turbines).

It seems though that Wally only ever produced one fully operational 118, there is speculation that they produced another 2 hulls in preparation for orders for the yacht, however to date they don’t seem to have happened.

Tante cose nuove, abbiamo iniziato a fare molti stage di hip hip con Dominique Lesdema e qualcuno anche con Wally, e di jazz abbiamo fatto uno stage con Serge Alzetta e Genevieve Blanchard (troppo difficile!). Poi abbiamo fatto per saggio un vero spettacolo, Chitty Chitty bang bang.
