The most common question I get is:

What is Optics & Photonics

This is actually a lot easier to answer than you think. It really isn’t rocket surgery. Okay, maybe chemistry is a little bit hard. And integrodifferential mathematic equations are too. And light is pretty strange because it has multiple properties. **Rolls eyes**

Optics is a part of medicine that is to do with your eye. Photonics is just a scientific word for eye. In short, light is everywhere. Any devices that has a camera, has a display, scans stuff; that uses light. Even communication technologies such as mobile phones use light; but a part of the spectrum you cannot see with your visible eye!

As Lewis says in Meet The Robinsons:

The possibilities are endless!

Let’s just hope I’ll be the optical engineer to find a cure for cancer =)

The Walt Disney Company is being featured today at
Stock-Market-Keywords.com.

Click here for the stock metadata reports along with direct one-click links to some of the most popular sources of stock market news, information and data from sites like Google, Yahoo!, MSN Money, WSJ’s MarketWatch, Bloomberg, etc.

This site has no advertising and no affiliate marketing programs whatsoever. No stock market recommendations are made nor opinions offered. It was built strictly to present stock market related information.

I’m not trying to impress you but would rather impress upon you that you can do your own analysis to make you stock buying and selling decisions. If somebody out there is making a recommendation to buy or to sell stocks, chances are pretty good they will benefit in some way.

Metadata is data about data. So let’s examine what is available from simply looking at two of the available metadata reports found there as PDFs for the Walt Disney Company.

First, click on the Daily Historical Metadata Summary report screen shown below. Here you’ll see metadata analysis results showing stock price ranges and relationships for a defined time frame that indicate how shares of this company have been trading.

You can then use these types of statistics to know what to expect and not expect to happen with the stock price during the day, a sort of best-case or worst-case scenario.

The 15-minute Hi-Low Counts report shown below can be equally informative. Statistically speaking when analyzing stock information over a specific date range, if you want to know the 15-minute period when shares trade at their highest price or lowest price, or the 15-minute period when the highest or lowest number of shares are traded, this report provides those answers.

If you choose to create your own version of these reports, links to detailed descriptions of each of them can also be found on the
Bulls-with-Bears page.

Although the stock metadata presented is 100% accurate, the actual stock prices and number of shares traded in the metadata reports for the Walt Disney Company have been altered slightly to maintain the focus on the metadata.

Here’s some trivia not related to the Walt Disney Company that you might find interesting.

Before the interstates and shopping malls, and roads leading to anywhere but home, there were glamorous movie theaters downtown, with red velvet curtains & elaborate balconies. Drive-in movie screens were sprouting like giant sunflowers all through out the countryside. Going to the movies was a wonderful family tradition, an escape into fantasy, a primer for the hard knocks to come in life, and suggestions on ways to deal with them.

The downtown theaters were an easy bus ride on a Saturday morning, and those trips included walking and window shopping, to the music store for lessons, the five & dime for hobby supplies, the Woolworth’s for back to school clothes (maybe a stop at the lunch counter), the newstand for candy, and into the fabric covered seats of the theater, for another trip to a place & time, far away.

When these downtown excursions were governed by my mother, we saw family fare, wonderful musicals such as The West Side Story, The Sound Of Music, Mary Poppins, just about anything & everything Disney. We also experienced live orchestral performances on the theater stage, exposing us to the great classical works in the form of Peter & The Wolf, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, The Ride of the Valkyries…imaginations ran wild.

On a weekend evening, my father took us all to an action packed drive-in adventure, dressed in our pj’s, where at one point or another, we were told to shield our eyes from the horrors happening in a Vincent Price film, to a sexy scene from a James Bond adventure. Occasional diversions to the playground, or concession stand, wore us out sufficiently, and we were crashed in the back of the station wagon come the second feature.

A bi-monthly bus trip to the downtown movie house, or a rural drive-in theater, side trips to the public library, plus four network television stations, radio, and our record players were all we needed to stimulate our senses, encourage creative thinking, expand our culture knowledge, and learn how to play well with others.

Flash forward to today, where all the above stimulation can be had by a click of a mouse, or a remote control, or a game controller, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. The one thing missing, the most important lesson, is the learning to work and play well, with others.

Hope it’s not lost on future generations.

That said, let’s enjoy together Side 1 of the lilting, fun-loving soundtrack to Walt Disney’s “Babes In Toyland”, starring Annette Funicello & Tommy Sands, based on the Victor Herbert musical comedy. I believe we saw this at the Elmwood Theater, or possibly the long gone Strand Theater, in downtown New Britain, CT. Most appropriate for the upcoming holiday season, and a wonderful vision of the snow covered city center dressed in it’s Christmas finery just washed over me!

Now that you are about to graduate, what are you going to do? I bet it won’t be a trip to Disney World. But now is the time to pursue all those dreams you have dreamed during your education. Just take Walt Disney, a boy with a dream that was manifested into hundreds of films, theme-parks, and beloved characters. There is no more “What if?” but only “I can.”

A few weeks ago I shared some photos of the Snow White Cottage apartments here in Los Angeles, and also mentioned that a number of other residences in the area had the same sort of German forest fairy tale aesthetic to them. And then I left you hanging. Well, hang no more. Come into the story, why don’t you?

Over here we have the home of Snow White’s little sister Rose Red:

which is just down the street from Prince Charming’s enchanted hunting lodge:

You can tell it’s enchanted because there is moss growing on the roof of the garage. Moss. In Los Angeles.

A few blocks down we come to the cottages where the substitute dwarves live. I’m thinking these dwarves were too tall to make it into the original story, but if one of the original dwarves gets sick or injured, these guys can step in without too much fuss:

And at last we come to Walt’s house on the hill.

Not having been inside this house, it’s a little presumptuous of me to say what the best part about the house is. It’s entirely possible that this house has secret passageways and wrought iron gondola transportation between floors. But as I said, I’ve never been inside, so to me the best part about this house is the sidewalk:

I don’t know how you get a city-owned sidewalk replaced by a stone pathway, but I guess if you’re Walt Disney you can do a lot of things.

Before we go, there’s one final Snow Whitey point of interest in the neighborhood that I’d like to share with you: Doc’s car.

I don’t know why he’s living around the block from the rest of the dwarves, but it’s nice to see that he’s going green with his little electric car.

We have been visiting a lot of castles recently, and I have picked out my favourite – St. Hilarion – to write about. it’s a massive structure perched on the top of the Kyrenia mountains. It is almost as if the building was carved out of the mountainside, especially since now it has fallen into ‘natures grasp’ with trees growing in amongst the walls.

Great view, right?

The peak of the castle is 732 metres high so as you can imagine the view is spectacular with the sea being the dominating feature. One of them tells us that Walt Disney supposedly gained inspiration for the castle in ‘Snow White’ when they visited Saint Hilarion!

There are many illustrations and pictures hung on the walls of the castle in various places (some on canvas) which gives visitors a look at how life was back then.

“If I have seen farther than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulders of giants.

“If I have seen farther than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulders of giants.” Scientist Sir Isaac Newton, in a letter to his colleague Robert Hooke, February 1676.
Have you ever pictured yourself as being an entrepreneur? Have you ever wanted to be your own boss and determine your own annual income and worth? Have you ever wanted to get away from the office more and spend additional time with your family or close friends? The fact is you can become an entrepreneur. You can even flourish as one much more easily than you might think. Find a mentor. A mentor is someone with more experience than you who serves as a trusted confidante over an extended period of time. In business the mentor is someone who has more entrepreneurial business experience than you and is also a trusted confidante over an extended period of time, usually free of charge. In other words, a mentor is not just an advisor, a mentor is someone who has been there and done that and is best suited to guide you along the path of profitability in your business.

Types of Mentoring
Mentoring is often divided into two types (Buell, 2004):
•	Informal mentoring relationships develop on their own as when a person approaches a possible mentor and that person agrees to form a mentoring relationship.
• Formal mentoring relationships refer to assigned relationships, in which the organization oversees and guides the mentoring program in order to promote employee development.
Note that this does not mean it is black and white; rather it is more of a continuum with formal on one end and informal on the other end. For example an organization may guide and oversee a mentoring program, in addition to providing learning opportunities to both the mentors and protégés, but may not assign the relationships.

These two types of mentoring can further be divided into two forms:
•	Traditional Mentoring in which there is a long-term relationship where a mentor guides the protégé’s career.
• Special Project Mentoring in which a mentor helps to guide a protégé’s short-term project (a few weeks to a few months).

Benefits of good mentorship
Why is mentoring important in business and life generally?
•	In this economy, you need to take advantage of every available resource to propel your career. Finding a mentor-and preferably a network of mentors-is a critical and smart way to get started. And, it won’t set you back financially the way hiring a career coach would.

•	Mentoring is a way of giving back to the community and to society at large. It’s a way to develop various skills as a teacher, manager, strategist, or consultant. And a true mentoring relationship also works in both directions-they learn about new ideas from you just as you learn timeless wisdom from them. Jack Welch, one of my mentors, of General Electrics is famous for his belief that you must be either number one or number two in your industry or you must get out and concentrate your resources where becoming number or two is possible. If you don’t the critical tool of competitive advantage, don’t compete.

•	A good mentor can provide you with the necessary competitive advantages you will need to be at the top of your field and lead your business into the realm of profitability.

•	Your mentor, being an experienced businessperson, is likely to have an extensive network, and can offer you access to far more senior decision-makers than you currently have. And they will be far more willing to open that network up to you than some casual acquaintance from a networking meeting.

•	A good mentoring relationship allows both mentor and mentee to develop new talents and build self-awareness. In business settings, the mentee can become more in-tune with a corporate culture and the mentor can hone leadership skills.

Finding a good mentor can often be difficult, if not almost impossible as good mentors are normally very good at their work, thus they already have high demands for their skills and time, thus they might be reluctant to take on a new protégé. To increase your chances, it sometimes helps to be specific about what you want from a mentor. The more certain you are about your needs, the more likely you will find a mentor to meet those needs.

When beginning your search, consider these tips:
Know yourself:
Consider your strengths and weaknesses, and define how a mentor might guide you through your growth.

Be proactive:
Develop a deliberate course of action to find a mentor.

Ask for referrals:
Networks to expand your reach. When requesting referrals, be clear about what you’re looking for and why.

Keep an open mind regarding who this person might be:
A mentor is someone who will help you grow in the area(s) most important to you, so look for someone who exemplifies the traits and skills that you want to adopt.

Identify where you may find a suitable mentor:
Good sources of mentors include your management team, industry associations, online communities, your clergy and/or congregation, and professors. Also consider people in your non-workplace communities, such as retirees, local business owners, and people associated with your hobbies. (Note: Some personal coaches advise against choosing your supervisor as a mentor because of a possible conflict of interest.)

Know what you want to achieve from the relationship:
A clear understanding of your purpose and desired result will ensure that you find a suitable mentor, and that you and your mentor find value in the relationship. This clarity also eliminates any future confusion regarding roles and expectations.

Think about people who have been your mentors in the past:
Whether deliberately or not, each of us has had mentors in our lives. Think about the people who have mentored you and the qualities that you appreciated most about them. Use these traits as barometers to finding a new mentor.

GOT VIRTUAL MENTORS?
Imagine having management guru Peter Drucker as your business mentor. As it turns out, many CEOs do and you can. By reading books, listening to tapes and attending seminars these leaders in various fields of business, entertainment etc., can become your mentor too and guide you to personal and business growth. Below is my list of ten most favorite virtual mentors:

Bill Gates-
Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates is perhaps the most famous entrepreneur of this era. He had the vision to predict the evolving importance of the personal computer. This allowed him to top Forbes magazine’s list of the world’s wealthiest individuals, with a 2006 estimated net worth of $50 billion.

Mary Kay Ash – Most Outstanding Woman in Business in the 20th Century
The founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics created a business that has helped some half a million women fulfill their dreams of business ownership. A best-selling author and powerful motivational speaker, Lifetime Television named her the Most Outstanding Woman in Business in the 20th Century.

Oprah Winfrey -Most Admired Entrepreneur
The unmistakable queen of daytime talk and voted the most admired entrepreneur among her peers. Oprah Winfrey stood out head and shoulders above the rest.

Madame C. J. Walker – First Female African-American Millionaire
The daughter of former slaves, orphaned at the age of seven, Walker built a thriving beauty products business in the early 20th century, eventually employing over 3,000 people. Her hard work, honest business dealings and quality products led her to become the first self-made female African-American millionaire.

Richard Branson – The Rebel Billionaire and the Ultimate Multipreneur
A Most Admired Entrepreneur. While perhaps less well known outside of his homeland of England, Richard Branson wins the Editor’s Choice for Most Admired Entrepreneur. Learn and the ultimate multipreneur who has succeeded perhaps most of all at “engineering a breathtaking life for himself.

Donald Trump – Billionaire Real Estate Tycoon and Host of The Apprentice
With a long list of accomplishments and assets in real estate development, hospitality and entertainment, the outspoken star and producer of “The Apprentice” is one of the world’s most famous entrepreneurs. With his rollercoaster track record, he demonstrates one of the most important entrepreneurial traits: the ability to stand back up when you fall down.

Henry Ford -Founder of Ford Motor Company and Manufacturing Assembly Line Innovator
Henry Ford was not the inventor of the automobile, but his innovations in assembly-line techniques and the introduction of standardized interchangeable parts contributed to making the United States a nation of motorists and produced the first mass-production vehicle manufacturing plant.

Michael Dell: Innovator of the Personal Computer Industry
Michael Dell, born February 1965, started the road to success out of his University of Texas dorm room in with just $1000 and an idea in 1984. Michael Dell is both Chairman and CEO of his company with a net worth of over $30 billion. Dell sells directly to the customer so to avoid middleman mark-ups.

Walt Disney – The Man behind the Mouse
Disney is one of the most recognized brands in the world, but few know as much about the man behind the Magic Kingdom, not to mention the hundreds of animated cartoons, countless feature films and endless toys that bear his name. An influential innovator and entrepreneur in the mid 20th century, Disney went from sketching a rabbit (yes, a rabbit) to running a multi-billion dollar empire.

Evan Carmichael
Evan is an entrepreneur and international speaker. At the age of 19, he became an owner and Chief Operating Officer in Redasoft, a biotechnology software company. The company quickly grew to over 300 organizations as clients, including NASA and Johnson & Johnson, in 30 countries. He started Evan Carmichael Communications Group and created EvanCarmichael website with the goal to give entrepreneurs the motivation to follow their passion and the strategies they need to succeed. Evan has also delivered over 100 keynote presentations to entrepreneurs in North America, Europe, and Asia.

I was raised watching the old Disney cartoons, including the really old Silly Symphonies. I can’t remember if they were just on TV or tape, but I recently decided to watch a number of them to reminice and remember. Tonight G and I were watching some of the earliest Disney cartoons, including the infamous Steamboat Willie.

It is funny how often something happens in the old cartoons you probably would not see in today’s cartoons. Characters chewing tobacco, or Minnie’s under garments getting caught in a hook and then used to suspend her in the air for example. The obsession that both Mick and Pete (Micky’s frequent adversary) seem to have with getting Minnie to kiss them, sometimes trying to force her to kiss them, is something you just would not see in a cartoon today. Mickey was a hot dog vendor in one of the cartoons and the hot dogs could dance and do tricks (like dogs) and then upon command would rub their “butts” in mustard and jump into sandwich bread. Then when the one hot dog was disobedient, Mickey pulled back the casing and spanked it on the “butt”. G was appalled. She was appalled several times. I find it all fascinating how things that were not appropriate then are more accepted today, and other things are not appropriate today but were totally okay then. It may seem like we’re more and more accepting across the board, but really things like sexual harassment and political correctness act to take us in the other direction at the same time. It is not so simple.

What did tickle our fancy with each cartoon was hearing “Minnie’s Yoo Hoo” song at the opening credits. I like the sped up version (above) but you can hear the original too (below). And what a coincidence that we are considering getting some chickens. (More fowl things to come on that later!)

Here are the words if you want to sing along …but not me …at least not in public…

I’m the guy they call little Mickey Mouse
Got a sweetie down in the chicken house
Neither fat nor skinny
She’s the horse’s whinny
She’s my little Minnie Mouse!
When it’s feedin’ time for the animals
And they howl and growl like the cannibals
I just turn my heel to the henhouse steal
And you’ll hear me sing this song

Oh, the old tomcat with the meow, meow, meow!
Ol’ hound dog with the bow-wow-wow!
The crow’s caw-caw!
And the mule’s hee-haw!
Gosh what a racket like an ol’ buzz saw!
I have listened to the cuckoo cuke his coo-coo!
And I’ve heard the rooster cock his doodle doo-oo
With the cows and the chickens
They all sound like the dickens when I hear my little Minnie’s Yoo-Hoo!

PS: It is Minnie’s “Yoo Hoo”, “Hoo Hoo”, though that would be funny too. Inappropriate but funny.

A new service for watching movies over the internet for free has attracted more than a quarter of a million Swedes since its launch two weeks ago. In addition to signing up tens of thousands of subscribers in a matter of days, the company responsible for the service, Voddler, recently inked licensing deals with two major Hollywood studios, Walt Disney Company and Paramount, giving its users access to thousands of film titles. Founded in Stockholm in 2005, Voddler offers users streaming on-demand videos free of charge. When it released a beta version of its technology in July, the service attracted 16,000 users on the first day. Voddler executive vice president Zoran Slavic said Voddler now has 70,000 registered users, as well as a queue of more than 200,000 people who have requested an invitation to join the service. Often dubbed the “Spotify for movies”, referring to another Sweden-based service for digital music distribution, Voddler aims to provide a legal alternative to file sharing pirated films that still allows customers the chance to watch whatever they want, whenever they want, for little or no cost. Slavic explained that Voddler believes that file sharing and internet piracy have changed consumer habits to the point that many expect to be able to see movies online without paying for them. While the service is currently only available in Sweden, Voddler plans to expand the service to Norway, Denmark, and Finland in 2010
