When you think about characters in Nintendo’s history that people either really love or REALLY hate

When you think about characters in Nintendo’s history that people either really love or REALLY hate Waluigi is always near the top of that list. There is no middle ground, it seems, and with him and more often that not he gets the hate side of that equation. My opinion differs a bit from that. He’s one of the few characters in the Mario series that is considered by some to be one of the more memorable characters that still doesn’t have their own game; even Daisy’s gotten more attention than him.

Waluigi was created in 2000 by Fumihide Aoki for Mario Tennis on the Game Boy Color. He’s made several appearances since then, almost exclusively in the sports titles. He’s generally thought of as Wario’s sidekick and the antithesis of Luigi, yet he’s never appeared in any of the Wario Land games and is used exclusively for comic relief. He even has been used as alternate color palettes for both Mario (Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door) and Luigi (Super Smash Bros. Brawl). Waluigi seems to appear everywhere in the Mario universe, but never as the main character in his own game.

Is it possible that with that one credit to his name he could be made into one of those characters that people remember a bit more fondly and he gets a bit more respect? I think it’s very possible. It’s very apparent he’s been a thorn in the side of the Mario Brothers for quite some time. The intro videos to all the sports titles show that he and Luigi don’t particularly like each other. Why not create a game where he could be behind the kidnapping of Daisy or someone and it’s Luigi’s turn to rescue the Princess. You would play as Waluigi, who runs his own motor oil business by the way, and that could be used to further his background, which is almost non-existent.

There are plenty of chances for the love triangle between the three to be explored, in so far as those relationships are explored in the Mario universe. Waluigi has a thing for Daisy, who has a thing for Luigi and that may be the basis of Waluigi’s hatred of the green plumber.

The deepest part of Waluigi’s background would be his name, which apparently has more meaning than many people think. His name is a portmanteau of the Japanese world warui, which means bad or evil and when changed to Waruji would literally mean ‘evil Luigi’. Makes sense. It is also apparently a sort of condescending apology in Japanese which fits perfectly with his attitude.

Waluigi has the beginnings of what could make for a wonderful character if Nintendo would take the time to explore him a bit more. I really like the character as I’m quite fond of Luigi. The evil counterpart would naturally be more interesting to me than the Wario version of Mario. I would love to see Waluigi get more respect than he does in the Mushroom Kingdom, he just needs to perfect opportunity to explore that a bit more.

Here are 10 things you may not know about our favorite video game character Mario: * Mario was first

Here are 10 things you may not know about our favorite video game character Mario:

* Mario was first seen in the video game Donkey Kong, but he was called “Jumpman.” He was also a carpenter then, not a plumber.

* Mario was named after Mario Segale, the landlord of Nintendo of America’s office, who barged in on a company meeting demanding an overdue rent.

* Shigeru Miyamoto drew Mario as wearing a cap because he found drawing hair difficult. He also drew in the moustache, because it was easier to see than a mouth in the crude video game screen resolution back then.

* Mario and his younger brother Luigi are known as the “Mario Brothers.” This means that Mario’s last name is also Mario, so his full name is Mario Mario.

* Mario is voice-acted by Charles Martinet, who crashed the audition for “an Italian plumber from Brooklyn” character. Here’s an interview with the man:

* Mario’s nemesis is Wario (a combination of “warui”, the Japanese word for bad, and Mario). Similarly, Luigi’s rival is Waluigi. Both are also voiced by Charles Martinet.

* Mario has appeared in over 200 video games so far, has sold over 193 million units of games (all of the Mario series) and even has his own TV cartoon show. Super Mario Bros. 3 alone grossed over $500 million in USA.

* TV Schmeve, you’re nothing till there’s an opera done on you. In 2003, Jonathan Mann of California Institute of Arts created The Mario Opera, a rock opera:

* Super Mario Bros. theme music, written by Koji Kondo, is known worldwide. It has inspired countless fan-renditions, including one played by Zack Kim on two guitars (viewed over 4 million times on YouTube!), played by Jean Baudin on 11 string bass, beatboxed by Greg Patillo on the flute, and played by the Oregon Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra on the trombones.

But my favorite is this one by Play! symphony orchestra:

* Mario is the most famous character in the history of video games, and perhaps is the most famous character ever. In a 1990 poll by Marketing Evaluations, Mario was found to be more popular (and recognizable) among children than Mickey Mouse.

WALUIGI By Spadefox At last, the moment I’ve been waiting for! After years of sulking in the da

WALUIGI

By Spadefox

At last, the moment I’ve been waiting for! After years of sulking in the darkness, Waluigi rises into MYM with a move set made by our very own Spadefox. Considering the massive amounts of spin-offs this awesome character has appeared in, this should be a great move set, right? RIGHT?!

Okay, so now, the stats. Just like Golbez, Waluigi has an interesting set of basic abilities, being large but not extremely heavy, and having excellent jumps with floatiness. Seems like a solid aerial combatant to me. But since power and attack speed are not mentioned, I’ll have to read the move set itself to see how he plays.

Okay, so the jab immediately starts bringing in the spin-offs, which makes me happy. The detail is already better than Golbez. Balance-wise, the move could probably stand to do more than a pathetic 3%, but at least this time you didn’t overestimate the attack’s usefulness. The jab is already instant win just due to being my favorite vehicle in Mario Kart DS, but you also once again improved from Golbez’s dash attack in detail and balance. I had to dig around for the lag, but I found it. So far I’m already liking Waluigi more than Golbez.

Wakoopa shell is simple but clever, especially how you actually had the balls to make a “wa” koopa shell. I see no flaw in balance or detail, and you specifically state that it’s disjointed. Yay! Lil dunk is lulzy to me for some reason. It’s another fun move, and it seems like Waluigi is going to have a good projectile game, which means he now reminds me of my Bass.EXE. Tick Tock Bomb is a decently interesting trap move. I can’t believe Snake doesn’t have a time bomb attack.

And now for the Smashes. Mario Tennis is just freaking awesome. I love how he has to pick up the ball again after he uses it, it really makes you think ahead before attempting such a powerful attack. My one complaint is that it doesn’t state how much knockback the tennis ball deals. The USmash is also quite fun, particularly how the end lag increases with more charge time. Like the FSmash, it’s a really powerful move that still require careful usage to make the most of it. The DSmash is…odd. There’s no other way to describe it. It’s a fun trap move, but I see no mention of lag. Still, I’m liking this guy so far. I’m liking this guy a lot.

Considering Waluigi is an aerial fighter, I can’t wait to see what aerials there are. Whirluigi is an interesting take on the “spin around a lot nair”. It could use a slight damage buff in the sweetspot, but otherwise is perfectly fine. Mrs. Bob-Omb is another fun trap move. This guy has a lot of fun trap moves, doesn’t he? Bair is pretty simple, but the animation makes it non-bland, and it has a sweetspot. Poison Mushroom is another simple but clever move, it’s really fun to imagine, and I love how it can backfire, adding more strategy to Waluigi. Dance off is pretty basic in usage, but the animation instantly makes it fun to use. At first I felt that it was useless due to how hard it is to hit with, but when I realized he could be potentially deal 16% total, my fears went away. The aerials are yet another solid category in this move set.

Oh God, do I really want to see this guy’s specials after the win in the rest of the move set…Liar ball is epic. It’s got great mind game potential, and is just all around awesome. Spiny Shell is lulzy how you actually made it attack the person in first. Once again, got no complaints. Oh God, you actually implemented the swimming power from Mario Tennis! Instant super-vote right there! It just needs a mention of lag. Walluigi is a nice spin on barricade moves. I like how it can be used a recovery tool by both yourself and your opponents The specials are all great and I have no major problems with them.

Waluigi’s grab is much better than Golbez’s simply due to coming out fast XD. The pummel is standard in gampeplay but has a cool animation, nice touch with the coins spilling out. Maybe these coins could actually count in a coin match? Just a thought. The FThrow is freaking brilliant. It’s a really creative and unheard of move. I’m curious to see how much damage a professional Melee would build up with how many inputs those guys make a second. The BThrow is another cool throw, and the luck based element actually makes the thing more balanced rather than less. I am concerned about it dealing great damage and knockback 90% of the time, however. The UThrow is simple but clever, though it would have been cooler if any other enemies on the ground took damage as well, making it feel more like a real POW block. DThrow is decent, but it seems pointless in comparison to his other throws. The other ones all deal more damage and knockback, and it doesn’t deal any special effects to the enemy besides make them trip, but Waluigi doesn’t really have any comboing attacks that he could use to take advantage of it. Maybe if you tripped an enemy into a Mrs.Bob-omb it could be useful, I dunno. The grabs aren’t quite as good as the rest of the move set save for the epic FThrow, but they’re still above average.

The final smash is cool. It’s certainly better than some generic giant bob-omb like most Waluigi sets would do. I like how you implemented the dirt attack. However, I think it would have better to have a final smash that pertains to his playstyle, like he eats a golden eggplant that makes his traps have more powerful side effects and Whirluigi having stronger wind. The current one is by no means bad, I just think it could have been better than the one that is currently there.

Now for the extras. Crotch-chop = 2 super votes. Enough said. The other taunts are good but fail in comparison to the almighty crotch-chop. The Sonic-themed alt color is funny. I loved how you gave him team victory animations with Wario. The item box and its fake is a fun item combination. I actually think this should have somehow been implemented into Waluigi’s move set, it would fit great with his traps. I really must insist on giving the playstyle section its own separate section from the extras, it’s too important to be lumped together with taunts (unless that taunt happens to be a crotch-chop of course). This is MUCH better than the Golbez playstyle section, and it fits really well with the move set itself. Honestly, I don’t think I’d ever play Waluigi competitively, but he sounds like a character that everyone needs to try once in their life just for the WTF factor, and just as fun to watch! As for overall balance, I think Waluigi is one of those characters that could be top tier but very few people would be able to achieve that potential, so he wouldn’t saturate tourneys. Waluigi Pinball is a really weird stage, and it would be interesting to see if it ends up tourney viable. I hope it does since it’s one of my favorite tracks in Mario Kart.

After about a five year absence due to running his WarioWare Corporation. Wario finally returns to his treasure hunting ways with this smash hit. This title was something that was announced out of no where, as it was announced four months before it was to be released in Japan. Many people were worried because of this, but rest assured, this game does deliver just like all the other Wario Land games.

The first thing I want to point out is how beautiful the graphics are. I was actually shocked with how good they looked. When I first turned the game on I had actually thought I was still in a cut scene and then realized that this is the game. The game feels like you’re actually playing through some sort of anime and that‘s a great feeling. This is one of the best looking Wii games out there so far and I hope to see more titles that look as good as this one. My only complaint that I have with the graphics would be that some of the sprites seem to stick out more than others.

The music is game does have it’s memorable tracks, especially the Egyptian like ones. The voice work for Wario is humorous to hear, especially when he is doing his power rush. The only thing I wish would be for there to be some voice overs during the cut scenes, but then again Nintendo seems to have something against putting voice overs in their games. At least if they aren’t going to do that, put something to identify who is speaking during the cut scenes this way you wouldn’t have to guess who is talking.

The Gameplay is similar to all the other Wario Land games. Wario has his classic shoulder charge and BUTT SMASH, as well as a few other new tricks up his sleeves. One of these being the “Shake” feature. This is one of the few features that require the use of motion control in the game (Which is kept to a minimum in the game, but that’s a good thing since this is a platform game). What this feature allows you to do is to grab treasure bags that you see and shake all the treasure out, a typical thing someone greedy like Wario would do and it‘s a cool little feature. Another thing you can do with this is shake the enemies that you have stunned to get health items (They give the Zelda series a nod with the health bar by having it as hearts).

There is one thing about the Gameplay that does hurt my experience however, and that is how you throw enemies in this game. Maybe it’s just me but I just have such a hard time trying to target my throws in this game because of how unresponsive the motion control for throwing is. You angle the controller one way and the game is reading you angling another way. This is especially annoying when you have to target a throw to hit a switch but you keep missing the switch because you can’t control the damn motion right due to how bad it is. It’s not a game breaking experience at all, but it is something that I wish was fixed due to how annoying it can be.

The Boss fights can also provide a challenge in the game if you don’t know what you are doing. The Level design is also well done. I’ve heard that some people have said the game is too easy, this may be if you are just playing with the game without doing any extras. But if you are trying to complete the game completely, then you’ll be in for some tough challenges ahead. Trying to complete the game completely by doing all the missions and collecting all the treasure in the game could easily put another ten hours of Gameplay into the game due to how well some of the treasure is hidden and how hard some of the missions may be.

It’s great to see that Wario is finally back to his old greedy ways after a long absence from them. I’m hoping to see more Wario Land games in the future and as well as more games that look as great as this one.

Here is the rundown of the game:

Visuals: 9.5 – Like I said, the graphics are just wonderful and I’m hoping to see more games to follow this graphical style. The only thing that actually stops me from giving it the perfect ten is due to the little problem with some of the sprites sticking out more than others.

Sound: 8 - There are some memorable tracks as I have mentioned and Wario’s little sounds are always quite humorous to hear. This would be higher had there been complete voice overs in the game rather than reading dialogue.

Presentation: 9 - The game just looks amazing and what’s there will keep you playing for a long time. The Levels look nice and Boss fights actually provide a challenge.

Gameplay: 8.5 – It’s just like the classic Wario Land games and those controls were perfect. I would honestly give this a perfect score had the motion control for throwing not been so damn difficult to deal with.

Lasting Appeal: 9 – The story isn‘t so long, but if you are going to complete every mission in the game and collect all the treasure that is in the game, then the length of the game is boosted about a good ten hours I would say

Final Score: 9/10 – Wario is back to his greedy ways, and he’s better than ever!

ワルイジ　= 悪ルイジ = (悪い)ジ

Ah, puns. It means “Bad Luigi”, among other possibilities; like “Bad resemblance”.

As for (悪い)ジ, I thought it could be “bad child” but I guess not because 児, when read as じ, is a noun suffix..

るいじ in itself means “resemblance”. Guess who Luigi is a resemblance of?

Hey, everybody! I am going to talk about Nintendo’s biggest gaming franchise, and the face of the company, Mario!!! In this post, I’ll go over the games in the Mario series (not including the spinoffs, which I’ll save for later).

Mario Games

The character, Mario, has changed over time with new systems, technology, and graphics. From his gaming debut, the arcade game Donkey Kong, where he is known as Jumpman, to the latest game, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario has sparked fun in every game he’s been in, new and old. He has become known by his blue overalls, red M hat, white gloves, brown shoes, and his amazing mustache around the world. Not bad for an Itallian plumber!

In this series of posts, I’m going to go over the major games, characters, enemies, spinoffs, history, powerups, his future, and everything you can imagine! Also, I’m going to keep this updated, so when you look at it, it will be fully updated and in tune with any changes in the Mario universe.

Donkey Kong- Mario’s first appearence, although he wouldn’t be known as Mario until four years later, when his own series of games started. He was known as Jumpman, and was a carpenter. The Princess Peach was actually known as The Lady! Anyways, Mario was the breakthrough Nintendo needed to get into the gaming market of America. Shegiru Miyamoto designed the game with others help to be different than the usual game of the day. He used cutscenes to advance an actual story, and made it fun, challenging, and different. The story starts when Jumpman mistreats his pet, so he in turn steals Jumpman’s girl. It’s up to him to save The Lady from the King Kong-like creature. When you win, the game starts over, but harder. Nintendo had trouble communicating the name Jumpman to Nintendo of America, so they named him Mario, after their landlord. It was the perfect match, and the game became very popular.

Mario Bros.- In 1983, Nintendo released the first game in the mario bros. series, Mario Bros. It didn’t have Donkey Kong, and was another arcade game. The game was based around Mario and his brother Luigi, two plumbers, who fight enemies coming out of pipes. It was later made a game playable on other home systems.

Super Mario Bros.- The video game market was dry when Miyamoto and Nintendo released another Mario game, Super Mario Bros., for the Nintendo NES. It is the top bestselling game of all time, selling forty million copies! It got two direct sequels, and is credited for making the NES popular. It is a side-scrolling adventure, in which Princess Peach gets kidnapped by King Bowser. Mario must fight his way through the Koopas and rescue the princess! If two are playing, Luigi becomes the second character. You must go through eight worlds, each with their own castle and boss battle. This game set a lot of consistencies throughout the series, including collecting coins, jumping on enemies, kicking shells, hitting ? blocks, and more.

Super Mario Bros. 2- Super Mario Bros. 2, released in 1988 in the U.S., had some changes in the game. You could play either Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach (who wasn’t captured this time!), and Toad. By squating, your character would flash, and when you jumped, it would be extra high. Also, you could actually pluck objects from the ground, and throw certain ones at enemies. It also used a real life meter, in which if you collect hearts, you can be hurt multiple times without dying. Anyways, the story goes when Mario has a dream where he here’s a voice telling him to save their kingdom from the evil Wart. He talks to his friends, and they go on a picnic together. They see a cave, enter, and go up a staircase and through a door like in Mario’s dream. They see a completely new world, and must save it.

Super Mario Bros. 3- Super Mario Bros. 3, released in 1990 in the U.S., intoduced a map screen, powerups, enemies, minigames, and even Bowsers kids, the Koopalings. This game is called one of the best of all time, and was even promoted by McDonalds! Mario and Luigi must go through several worlds, rescuing kings in order to save Peach from Bowser. In each castle, they fight a Koopaling (boss), and take back the kings magic wand. This game, along with the other classic Mario games, have been remade for newer systems, and many are on the Wii’s virtual console.

Super Mario Land- Super Mario Land, released in 1989 for the gameboy, was very similar to the last two. In this game, Mario must defeat Tatango, and save Princess Daisy. There aren’t any other playable characters in this game, though. Also, in a couple of levels, Mario rides a submarine and airplane that can shoot for the whole level. Tatanga captures Daisy to marry her, and sends his minions to defeat him, some who pretend to be Daisy to fool Mario. The game did OK because many thought that every game was almost exactly like the one before it, with only small changes and different stories.

Super Mario World- Super Mario World was bundled with the Super NES, and is the bestselling game for that system. Released in 1991 in the U.S., it has been remade for the gameboy advance (like the other Mario games), and is popular on the virtual console for the Wii. It was probably the biggest game thus far in the Mario series, and had secret exits, secret worlds, and lots of other secrets that made it fun to go through and play a second time around.

Super Mario Land 2- Released in 1992 for the Gameboy, Super Mario Land 2 was one of the largest games for the Gameboy. It had secret zones, levels, exits, and even kept track how many enemies you killed. It also was the first game to feature Wario. It also had a few minigames, sort of like the old Kirby games. It takes place after Super Mario Land. When Mario leaves, Wario takes over and calls it Wario Land. He brainwashes all of the creatures and makes them believe that Mario is evil. Mario must collect all six coins to open Wario’s castle and defeat him.

Super Mario 64- Super Mario 64, released in 1996, was a revolution in the gaming history. Instead of a 2D sidescrolling game, Super Mario 64 was a grand 3D adventure, and is the seventh best-selling game in the U.S. It has been rereleased, remade for the DS, and is on the Wii’s virtual console. A sequel was actually planned, but was cancelled eventually. In this game, Princess Peach invites Mario over for cake, but when he gets there, he finds Bowser and his minions have captured her and have taken over the castle using the Power Stars they stole, and dispersed over the castle, and hidden in paintings that lead to other worlds. Mario must get the stars, unlock more of the castle, search for hidden stars, and defeat Bowser multiple times to rescue Princess Peach. This game is one of my faves, and it’s even better knowing even after you get Peach, there are still lots of stars you can go back and collect to completely finish the game. It has a great storyline, fun, good challenges, and you really have to think to solve puzzles and challenges. What makes it even better is that YOU get to decide where you want to go and what you want to do. You can explore the castle, go to certain levels, replay certain levels, and have an amazing time doing it.

Super Mario Sunshine- Super Mario Sunshine, released in 2002, was the “sequel” to Super Mario 64, although they aren’t very alike. Two sequels had been cancelled already: Super Mario 64 2, and Super Mario 128. When Super Mario Sunshine came out, critics were definitely pleased, but didn’t think it was one of the best Mario games, like they had expected after waiting for six years. It takes place in Isle Delfino, where Mario and Peach are taking a vacation after the events in Super Mario 64. A character known as Shadow Mario comes, vandalizes the town, and blames it on Mario. The sun sprites, the stars that give the island energy, go away. He has to clean up, while going after Shadow Mario who has kidnapped Princess Peach, and collect the sun sprites. The major theme in this game is the FLUDD, or the backpack Mario has. He got it to help him clean up the graffiti and pollution, and uses it to get up high, go fast on land or water, break down doors, and many other actions.

New Super Mario Bros.- Released in 2006 for the DS, New Super Mario Bros. was like a blast from the past, only fresh and new. It has the usual storyline, where Peach is kidnapped, and Mario must travel through eight worlds to rescue her. It is very similar to the old games, with very similar controls, enemies, storyline, ect. It is the bestselling DS game with only one version (unlike Nintendogs and Pokemon).

Super Mario Galaxy- Super Mario Galaxy, released in 2007, is one of the most stunning and mindblowing games on the Wii. You can check my post on Super Mario Galaxy for more details and pics. It takes place in outer space, after Bowser kidnaps Peach at a festival, and Mario is blasted into outer space. He is rescued by Rosalina and her ship full of Lumas, or stars. They say that Bowser stole the stars that powered the ship, and they are unable to fly, so they can’t reach Bowser to rescue her. Mario must travel to different galaxies through the ships several observatories, collect stars in order to power the ship to rescue Princess Peach. Again, for more details, visit my post on Super Mario Galaxy. The game sold amazingly, and was the best rated Mario game since Super Mario 64, over ten years earlier. A sequel has been mentioned, and at E3 2008, Shigeru Miyamoto, announced that the sequel is being worked on, along with Zelda and Pikmin.

Thank you for reading The Complete Guide to Mario: Part 1–History(Games). Next time, I’ll go over all of the major and minor characters, followed by the enemies. Stay tuned!

Hey all you super-cool Nintendo fans! Wish you could talk to Mario, well here’s your chance! Since the beginning of August all the way to the 22nd the man who plays super Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and baby Mario will be at Nintendo World in New York City–sorta. Nintendo World has set up a TV monitor with a camera and speakers, with a 3D full body image of Mario. The man who plays his voice, Charles Martinet, is all the way over in California. Though the power of technology they have connected him to the TV monitor and camera so he can see and hear all the questions you ask Mario. playing Mario’s life in real-time allows him to have full conversations with you. And don’t worry if you speak English. Charles speaks several languages including Spanish and I believe German or Russian! Picture Russian with an Italian accent!
