John Saul’s House of Reckoning

Sarah and her dad, Ed, live a quaint existance at their farm house despite his recent death of his wife, despite these odds they cherish each other. That is…until one day, when Sarah’s world crumbles around her. Her dad is sent to jail, her to a foster family, and to a new, ruthless school of gut-wrenching students. Just when she thinks all is lost, Sarah meets her art teacher, Bettina, who turns out to be more caring and nurturing than she ever could have imagined. She meets her closest friend and confidant, Nick. This group of so-called musketeers fight against their worst enemies, imagined and invisible.

With Sarah’s talent for art, Nick’s voices that swim in his mind, and Bettina’s ‘witch’ power, the three of them discover secrets, release tortured souls, and dish up much deserved justice! A real tale that displays the detailed meaning of “revenge is a bitch!”

Excerpts:
Pg. 48- ‘It tasted almost as bad as she felt.’

Pg. 50- ‘All around him blood was spurting from torn arteries, faces were dissolving as if doused in acid, and maggots tumbled from empty sockets where the eyes hat were watching him should have been.’

Pg. 185- ‘The voices in his head wouldn’t let him.’

Pg. 233- ‘It was all impossible… as she started painting, it all made sense.’

The Department of Homeland Security is moving its managed service offerings under Networx to a private cloud.

In order to do this, DHS took its cues from the Social Security Administration, which is using a similar model.

At a recent lunch hosted by AFFIRM, Michael C. Brown, Executive Director of the IT Services Office at the Department of Homeland Security talked about how his office is accomplishing this and why they decided to make the move.

“We wanted both carrier and geographic redundancy for all the reasons that that might make sense and we did not have that pervasively throughout the department under the status quo, so this really was, again, a transformative opportunity in terms of capability.”

DHS has branded its WAN [wide area network] as OneNet, which is currently composed of 151,000 service elements and 5,000 sites.

In terms of design, Brown said that the way that telecommunications services are offered through Networx (and, previously, FTS2001) were very advantageous.

“There’s both an ability to centralize services. So, for example, we’ve centralized the fair opportunity across the department for [WAN] services and we’ve centralized the provisioning capability. At the same time, there are the very positive tools of distributed management. So, the designated agency representative capabilities — those ordering officials that are spread throughout the department and every other agency in the federal government, allow us then to execute the fair opportunity decision in a distributive way. It really brings a force multiplier to the game and allows each of our components to have a significant stake in a centralized solution.”

This, he noted, has many benefits including cost savings.

“The fair opportunity decision which we completed in May of 2008 was about $971 million in total value over the life — so very significant fair opportunity decision. I think that the work we undertook in the SOW [statement of work] arena was perhaps the most meaningful. We achieved a number of capabilities that we hadn’t had in the department before — but most challenging, perhaps, in developing an SOW of that size is bringing together the subject matter experts and sequestering them for a long enough period of time to create a real requirements package.”

He added that DHS is using Networx — and the private cloud — as an opportunity to transform the enterprise.

“As a young department, you can imagine that we’re working through a number of the consolidation kinds of activities that you might expect when you pull 22 agencies together. WANs are not the least of those. We’re having to roll those up into a single enterprise of wide area network. Networx presents exactly the right opportunity to cause that to happen.”

Generally spread over a larger geographical area from across a city to across a continent (100Km

Generally spread over a larger geographical area from across a city to across a continent (100Km – 1000Km)

Typically made up of a number of intercontinental switching nodes.

Transmission from one device goes through internal nodes of the network to a specified destination device.

Nodes are not concerned with the contents of the message but just bounce the message to the next node towards the destination.

Implemented using circuits switching, packets switching frame relay or ATM networks.

A wide area network (WAN) is a computer network that covers a broad area (i.e., any network whose communications links cross metropolitan, regional, or national boundaries ). This is in contrast with personal area networks (PANs), local area networks (LANs), campus area networks (CANs), or metropolitan area networks (MANs) which are usually limited to a room, building, campus or specific metropolitan area (e.g., a city) respectively.

WANs are used to connect LANs and other types of networks together, so that users and computers in one location can communicate with users and computers in other locations. Many WANs are built for one particular organization and are private. Others, built by Internet service providers, provide connections from an organization’s LAN to the Internet. WANs are often built using leased lines. At each end of the leased line, a router connects to the LAN on one side and a hub within the WAN on the other. Leased lines can be very expensive. Instead of using leased lines, WANs can also be built using less costly circuit switching or packet switching methods. Network protocols including TCP/IP deliver transport and addressing functions. Protocols including Packet over SONET/SDH, MPLS, ATM and Frame relay are often used by service providers to deliver the links that are used in WANs. X.25 was an important early WAN protocol, and is often considered to be the “grandfather” of Frame Relay as many of the underlying protocols and functions of X.25 are still in use today (with upgrades) by Frame Relay.

Transmission rate usually range from 1200 bps to 6 Mbps, although some connections such as ATM and Leased lines can reach speeds greater than 156 Mbps. Typical communication links used in WANs are telephone lines, microwave links & satellite channels.

Herewith, to mark the ten thousandth view of Sesquiotica, I present an epistolary correspondence bet

Herewith, to mark the ten thousandth view of Sesquiotica, I present an epistolary correspondence between Ion Orzabal and Muriel Wan.

IO:
Muriel, I wan to woo you.

MW:
There are wan ways to do that. Wan, my name, one of the old hundred Chinese surnames, means “ten thousand.” So it is one hundred times the hundred. Square me away with some poetry.

IO:
You, Wan, are Han (Chinese); I am Basque. May I bask in your glory? Muriel, for you I will make merry with a myriad of means – myriad being “ten thousand” but rooting in the Greek murios, “countless.” Any Tennyson? Let’s try this:

Sweet is every sound,
Sweeter thy voice, but every sound is sweet;
Myriads of rivulets hurrying through the lawn,
The moan of doves in immemorial elms,
and murmuring of innumerable bees.

MW:
You have connected! You speak of innumerable bees and moaning birds, surely the source of the countless many things – in Chinese, wan wu: the “ten thousand things.” Everything. As often mentioned in the Tao Te Ching – let me quote the translation by Gia-Fu Feng and Jane English:

The nameless is the beginning of heaven and earth.
The named is the mother of the ten thousand things.

and

The highest good is like water.
Water gives life to the ten thousand things and does not strive.

I do like the water images. After all, Muriel comes from Scots Gaelic Muireall, “bright sea.”

IO:
If water is music to your ears, I can Handel it. But then let me Aeschylate matters. Who stole the fire from the gods and put them in your eyes? Why, Prometheus, of course, and he is bound to be relevant. He is quoted speaking of the “Myriad laughter of the ocean waves.” A cheat, though, I declare: the original Greek is pontion te kumaton anérithmon gelasma, no murios in sight until lines later (where it is murieté)… Here is David Grene’s translation of the lines:

Bright lights, swift-winged winds, springs of the rivers, numberless
laughter of the sea’s waves, earth, mother of all, and the all-seeing
circle of the sun: I call upon you to see what I, a God, suffer
at the hands of Gods –
see with what kind of torture
worn down I shall wrestle ten thousand
years of time –

And indeed, Muriel, I wrestle a myriad of yearning tortures for you. Let me, IO, quote Io from Prometheus Bound, stung by the gadfly, goaded by Argos, the ten-thousand-eyed (muriópon) herdsman. In Greek, “Io, io, popoi! Poi de m’agousi téleplagtoi planai.” In English, “O, O, O, Where are you bringing me, my far-wandering wanderings?” Do my wanderings take me back? Do I strive pointlessly?

MW:
Ah, earth, the mother of all, again. You have named it! But there it is: you begin from the myth and you take it to the myriad in the moment, an instance of hierophany – Mircea Eliade’s “eternal return.” We create the sacred space when we connect with the myth, and the time now becomes the time of the myth for the moment. In every countless moment we may return. But again I am jonesing for the tao:

Returning is the motion of the Tao.
Yielding is the way of the Tao.
The ten thousand things are born of being.
Being is born of not being.

IO:
Ah, all is wan and wan is one. I know another eternal return: the idea that, given an infinite amount of time, all arrangements of matter in the universe will recur. But I eternally return to you, Ion after eons. Will you yield?

MW:
And the universe, too, returns, from big bang to big crunch, every breath a myriad of eons. But is this yield you desire the yield of a cookie recipe? I hope it is not a mere yield of a myriad. Myriad matches miscellaneously: ways, problems, forms, details, issues. Do you make merry or do you make as to marry? I do not marry ad hoc; Muriel does not marry all who ask. Wan will have but one.

IO:
Well, when all is Wan, Wan is all. I will be a rock and will not roll. If you wish a stairway to heaven, let us physically manifest the sacred. But let me speak of what I believe; I will shout and let it all out, my tears and fears. You speak of Mircea Eliade, and I hope my words are not Greek to you; I seek no Iliad, and I wish theodicy, not the Odyssey. Have mercy. Let my hierophany be Coleridge’s “Hymn to the Earth”:

Say, mysterious Earth! O say, great mother and goddess,
Was it not well with thee then, when first thy lap was ungirdled,
Thy lap to the genial Heaven, the day that he woo’d thee and won thee!
Fair was thy blush, the fairest and first of the blushes of morning!
Deep was the shudder, O Earth! the throe of thy self-retention:
Inly thou strovest to flee, and didst seek thyself at thy centre!
Mightier far was the joy of thy sudden resilience; and forthwith
Myriad myriads of lives teem’d forth from the mighty embracement.
Thousand-fold tribes of dwellers, impell’d by thousand-fold instincts,
Fill’d, as a dream, the wide waters; the rivers sang on their channels;
Laugh’d on their shores the hoarse seas; the yearning ocean swell’d upward;
Young life low’d through the meadows, the woods, and the echoing mountains,
Wander’d bleating in valleys, and warbled on blossoming branches.

The myriad myriads – noun and adjective, the universe in verse – will teem forth from our embracement. Let me be the genial Heaven that woo’d and won Wan! The rivers will sing in their channels, and the hoarse seas will laugh – countlessly; the yearning ocean will swell upward.

Oh, let me Marvell at your beauty! To be exact, Andrew Marvell, “To His Coy Mistress”:

Had we but world enough, and time,
This coyness, Lady, were no crime
…
An hundred years should go to praise
Thine eyes and on thy forehead gaze;
Two hundred to adore each breast,
But thirty thousand to the rest;
An age at least to every part,
And the last age should show your heart.
…
But at my back I always hear
Time’s wingèd chariot hurrying near;
…
Let us roll all our strength and all
Our sweetness up into one ball,
And tear our pleasures with rough strife
Thorough the iron gates of life:
Thus, though we cannot make our sun
Stand still, yet we will make him run.

MW:
Ah, thirty thousand – san man. Mister San Man, you bring me a dream. The wingèd chariot may be your father’s, for you are Ion, son of Apollo, who drives the sun. I hope you will not run. You are myriad-minded, to borrow a word Coleridge applied to Shakespeare: Greek murionous. I am in mind of Bronson Alcott, from “Ion: A Monody”:

Early through field and wood each Spring we sped,
Young Ion leading o’er the reedy pass;
…
For endless Being’s myriad-minded race
Had in his thought their registry and place

But for your harbinger, let me end with a line from Edmund Charles Blunden’s Harbingers:

And wed me with the myriad-minded man.

IO:
Then let us be happily myriad!

MAN: Metropolitan Area Network , şehir alan ağı anlamındaır.

örnek bir MAN yapısı

4- DNS: Domain Name System, yani Alan Adı Sistemidir.

Jangkauan MAN antara 10 – 50 KM.

OKN: Opened a position in Oakton today at 3.40.

I exited the last Oakton trade when I hit a double top, which has now been clearly penetrated (smashed?) giving a strong run up to a the high for the year so far.

The share appears to be in an uptrend (higher highs, lower lows), so I have bought in where the share seems to be finding support.

Reasons against taking the trade? The high point in the chart is a nice example of a shooting star, a typical reversal signal. The top of that shooting star is clos-ish to the most recent significant highest high in August 2008. This may cap my upside, but if that is penetrated, then this is a good trade. Lets see where this goes.

Downside is limited due to closeness to next support line, and upwards trend line.

wan - another re-entry

WAN: Opened a position in West Australian News today at 7.80. Volume has been good the last two days, and days have been closing at or near daily tops for a while now – in spite of the large number of down days recently in the general market.

Looking for a bounce on the current upwards trendline – and hopefully not too much resistance at the recent high. Looking at todays chart looks like it may be a distinct possibility.

As I sign off for the night, the US markets are opening well, so if this pushes through resistance tomorrow this may be one to watch.

Even though it is new media.. so as a keeper this doesn’t make sense to me!

Thats a lot of closures.

So, like everyone, I have interests outside that which I primarily write about here. Without wanting to digress too much, I have been out sparring tonight. I copped a slight knock to the jaw, and saw the followup hook coming in for the 1-2. Despite the knock, I kept the guard up and avoided the big punch. That’s what we train – keep your guard up, and try to read the opponent – sometimes you will get it right, and sometimes you will get hit. When you get hit – keep the guard up, feel for the next one!!

I’ve taken a few shots this month, as the portfolio update next weekend will attest. So – back to training – keep the guards up, take a shot when you can and accept you can’t catch everything. But never get hit so hard you can’t continue. After a few losses in a row, all bar one below 10%, I feel like its the end of a round. Splash water in the face, take a breather on the weekend and get back in there.

On with the show…

amp - taking a dive

AMP: Closed my position in AMP at $5.96 for an 8% loss. Now looking at the entry when I opened this trade, it was such a good looking trigger. The setup was linked to financials doing well, and then a nice breakout. I held on through the retracement.. and passed on my trendline stop loss waiting for … what? The support I expected did not exist. Stop triggered last night, and exit taken in early trade today. Now I have a more bearish outlook than a few weeks ago, taking the earlier exit looks like a no-brainer. hmmmm 20-20 hindsight. Of note is a flattening of the longer term MA (in orange). Lets step back from this a bit. Not a bad trade, but could have been better.

reh - small gain

REH: Exited this today at $24 for a 4% gain. This trade was always on a bit of a knife edge. I found to be a bit illiquid for my liking… and I knew that sentiment was not strong once I had a position. A couple of times in the last two weeks I have been the only seller of Reece – and no one has wanted to take my shares off my hands. Now things are grim, I thought I should close this out rather than get caught out – so I did, and it looks from the chart that others followed me out the door.

I really should remember to keep an eye on liquidity – this has happened to me twice this year now (note to self).

WAN - reading the papers

WAN: Closed my position in West Australian News today at $7.57 for an 8% gain. Now this is a better trade – I’m happier with this.

I was confident in my entry, as it was ‘text book’, departure from a steady uptrend to the high side, with good liquidity.

My ATR based stop loss tracked nicely and has kept me in a nice profit. Whilst I could have exited on the departure from the steeper trendline, this would translate to a futile attempt at top picking – not a winning approach as I have learnt over the years. In this case I definitely stuck to the plan, and no second guessing.

Aquila Resources

AQA: And finally AQA. I closed my position at $7.09 for a monster 14% loss just prior to close of trade today. This is a 2R loss. Even with a small position that I entered with, the loss was too big.

Look at those black candles – great at a birthday party – but not great for my bank balance! It is actually this trade that has told me I need to review everything on the weekend, and hunt some good shorts – I’m sure they’re out there. Looking through whats left of my positions, I may be taking more positions out tomorrow – but we shall see what the overnight US markets whisper to me.

And finally, a comment on a position I haven’t closed. And I still need to work out if it oughtta be. This is what a capital raising can do to my capital in the short term. But I love noticing things. Like the fall to the height of a recent peak, coinciding with the same price point as the capital raising… hmmm…

bugger - a capital raising

In closing – although I mentioned a contact sport above, I do not think of the market as an aggressor opponent – I think of it as a sparring partner. It does what it does, I do what I do, and through it all I get fitter.

So keep your guards up!

Not all Websites are available to anyone cruising the Net. Some are reserved for the private use of a single company’s employees and stakeholders. An intranet uses the same technologies as the Internet and the World Wide Web, but the information provided and the access allowed are restricted to the boundaries of a company-wide LAN or WAN. In some cases, suppliers, distribution partners, and key customers may also have access, but intranets are protected from unauthorized access through the Internet by a firewall, a special type of gateway that controls access to the local network. People on an intranet can get out to the Internet, but unauthorized people on the Internet cannot get in.

Possibly the biggest advantage of an intranet is that it eliminates the problem of employees’ using different types of computers within a company. On an Intranet, all information is available in a format compatible with Macintosh, PC, UNIX-based computers. The need to publish internal documents on paper is virtually eliminated because everyone can access the information electronically.

Besides saving paper, an intranet can save a company money in the form of employee hours. Employees can find information much faster and more easily by using a well-designed database on an intranet than by digging through a filing cabinet or card catalog. Some of the communication uses companies have for intranets include updating policy manuals, posting job openings and submitting job applications, accessing martketing and sales presentations from anywhere in the world, updating and managing employee benefits, accessing company records and databases, collaborating from anywhere in the world to develop new products, scheduling meetings, setting up company phone directories, and publishing company newsletters. In fact, just about any information that can help employees communicate is a good candidate for an intranet. As video and audio technologies progress, you can expect to see more multimedia applications on intranets as well.

here is L drinking Miso soup from a lacquered Japanese soup bowl called Wan (椀). She loves Miso soup, so I usually bring it on the table after she ate enough food. Otherwise she only drinks Miso soup. She holds the bowl very well, but…

This bowl is obviously too big for her, and her whole face is covered in it. My auntie in Japan is sending her the kid’s size bowl and I cannot wait for it to arrive in ZRH!
