It took me one week end to be successful. The instructions found around in the web are far from bein

It took me one week end to be successful. The instructions found around in the web are far from being complete. Navigami is a very nice Java application to build tracks on landmarks in easy and intuitive way, in my opinion better than Nokia Maps (I still do not understand why the compass in Navigami is not very accurate: if you know why, please tell me what should I do). Nevertheless, the installation of Navigami maps is quite tricky. Read below and follow step by step the instructions. I assume you know how to pair devices via BT.

.Hardware and basic software you need

- Pc with Windows XP, JAVA and Nokia PC suite
- Mobile Device with Java Support (like Nokia 6700)
- External or Integrated GPS Receiver (integrated in Nokia 6700)
- BT dongle

1) Download of the necessary additional software

a. Go http://www.navigami.com/download/navigami.jar and download the .JAR file to your PC on c:\ – I did not need the .JAD
b. I’ve a DIKOM BT dongle. With Windows XP BT drivers nothing worked out. I needed to download the WIDIKOM drivers. You find them at http://www.broadcom.com/support/bluetooth/update.php – save the package on your PC.
c. Download and save to your PC in c:\ the file comproxy.jar http://www.navigami.com/download/comproxy.jar and in c:\Windows\system32 the file rxtxSerial.dll http://www.navigami.com/download/rxtxSerial.dll

2) Installation protocols for Win XP and Nokia 6700 mobile phone and BT setup

a. Install the WIDIKOM BT drivers. If you have already installed the XP BT drivers, leave them there and just don’t use them. Restart the PC. To check if your WIDIKOM drivers work, try to connect via BT your mobile and Nokia PC Suite. It should work out easy. After the test I left the Nokia PC suite open and connected to the mobile – I do not know if it is necessary.

b. If Nokia PC Suite works properly via BT, now it is time to setup the COM port you will use to connect navigami and your PC via BT. Go to advanced configuration/local services of the BT WIDIKOM program (right click on BT WIDIKOM taskbar icon) and push Add serial device (in my case COM17 came out – I set secure connection not required). Follow the requests to finish the setup of the new COM port. Now the port to exchange data between Navigami and XP is set.

c. Install navigami.jar on your mobile. Drag it on Nokia PC Suite or just double click on it, as .jar should be opened by default by Nokia PC suite. Now it is time to go out of your cave for some minutes to get Navigami memorize at least one GPS coordinate (this will be the coordinate used to auto download the maps later). Start Navigami when you are outside with open sky on your head, stay in Navigami main screen so that you can give a look to the satellite icon for satellite lock. My Nokia 6700 takes as long as 10-15 minutes to have satellite locks. When I am lucky, 1-5 minutes are enough. While waiting, play around with Navigami to get confident with it, as no manual is written yet – do not play with networking settings, though! Once you get the satellite lock, you can save the position as a landmark and go back home to your PC.

d. Install comproxy.jar on the PC. XP Start button/Run and write java -jar c:\comproxy.jar – a DOS window opens together with a small window. In the small window select COM17 (or the COM number you obtained in BT WIDIKOM when you added the COM port) and press Start.

3) Navigami connection to PC (tricky step)

Open Navigami on your mobile and go on Settings/Network. Set the Proxy on Bluetooth, click on Search, find your PC and select it. Then tick the Enable option and left soft key/save . If going out and back in the menu Settings/Network the option Enable does not remain ticked, it means there was no connection between comproxy on the PC and navigami on the mobile. Be sure you selected the same COM port in Widikom and comproxy. Be sure your devices are paired via BT. If so, when you went on Settings/Network and set Proxy on Bluetooth, after search Navigami should have found your PC and announced “PC name” connected. If you are not able to pair navigami with comproxy, then no need to go futher

4) Download of the maps

Now the magic part. Go on Maps/Manage Maps on Navigami. You should get a white screen with the last coordinates and a small red dot in the middle. This means: you’ve no maps installed. Bring the DOS window on the front in your PC – just to see what happens when you request map download in the next step. Left soft key/Download maps on the mobile. If your mobile tries to connect via wap, a error 27 will return. If this happens, it means your comproxy and navigami are not paired. Try to fix the problem by repeating the previous steps more carefully. If you see code scrolls on the DOS window and the mobile screen becoming red and maps appearing: CONGRATULATIONS! You installed the map relative to your position! Enjoy now tracking and exploring!

And now my question: If you can help me to surf the web on my Nokia 6700 through BT, I will be very thankful I did not manage it, yet.

Last Friday was a major milestone in the extensive reporting requirements of the Recovery Act. Reco

Last Friday was a major milestone in the extensive reporting requirements of the Recovery Act. Recovery.gov released the first round of reports by local recipients regarding the status of some 142,825 initiatives receiving recovery funds. This round of reports covered Feb. 17, 2009, through Sept. 30, 2009—the reports will be updated quarterly going forward.

As TXLIHIS is closely following the recovery act funds related to housing, we awaited these initial reports with interest. However, a quick glance at the data revealed little new insight regarding the programs we are following.

TCAP, the supplemental funding program for low income housing tax credit developments, is well underway in Texas. In fact, the TDHCA board has already awarded the first round of TCAP funding. However, none of the funds have been dispersed because the winning developments are still undergoing underwriting and the contract language for the funding structures are still being finalized.

Because none of the funds have been actually dispersed, the Recovery.gov report on the TCAP program in Texas merely states “During the first reporting period project activity has been limited to administrative activities at the Prime Recipient level.” This is in line with other states: The only state to report actually expending TCAP funds by September 30th is Colorado, which reported making its first award in mid-September.

Similar language describes the status of the Weatherization Assistance Program in Texas. While that funding was available in early September to local service providers that executed contracts with TDHCA, as of September 30th, Texas reported spending just .03% of its weatherization funding from the recovery act. While this lags behind other states (Georgia reports spending 19% of its funding, South Carolina 15%), this may indicate that service providers initially prioritized conventional Weatherization Assistance Program funding over Recovery Act funding rather than a lack of weatherization activity. At a housing conference in early October, TDHCA staff indicated that some 4,000 units had been weatherized in Texas.

So, this data release is a case where the interesting details were those behind the data, not in the data itself. The next round of recipient reports should be released Jan 29th. By then, we hope to have more activity reported from these programs.

Last week I was invited to appear on the Warhammer Alliance Podcast as the fourth host. We recorded on Sunday, and it was put online last night.

The whole experience was a blast. We discussed the next patch, which included the Underdog System, as well as the Gates of Ekrund scenario and the Dev Diary on game performance.

The WAP gang – Frank, Martin, Kristen and the silent producer Amber – were absolutely hilarious and incredibly easy to speak with. It was great to have an open conversation about the positive and negative aspects of the game.

In the beginning of the podcast I gave a shout-out to not only my guild, but also to my alliance. Due to some recent reorganizing, the alliance had changed its name and I couldn’t remember it offhand. Just for the record, The Murder Junkies and I are in the Chaotica Infinitum Alliance.

Also, I mentioned that Serpent Cross, one of our allied guilds, had exciting things planned for the Halloween weekend. They are hosting Spook-Fest, with such fun events as zombie chickens in Chrace (I sure love those chickens) and hide-and-seek with pie.

I hope everyone enjoys the podcast and has a happy Halloween!

Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) in Texas Another housing program expanded by the 2009 Recove

Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) in Texas

Another housing program expanded by the 2009 Recovery Act was the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). WAP funds local agencies to provide minor home repairs to low-income Texans. These repairs increase the energy efficiency of the housing stock and reduce the heating and cool components of the housing cost.

The recovery act bumped up the funding of weatherization in Texas from $13 million to $327 million, a 2500% increase. Half of this funding has already been sent to Texas by the Department of Energy, and TDHCA has awarded it to some 66 local governments and non-profit agencies. This is an expansion from the 34 agencies funded under the program prior to the recovery act.

The details of the program are well summarized in fact sheets by the Center for Public Policy Priorities (Texas) and Green for All (National), so we won’t repeat them here, but we thought it was worth sharing some of the policy questions surrounding this program that we think are important:

Is the program helping those who need it most? The income eligibility threshold for the program increased from 150% of the poverty level to 200%. Lower-income residents may require more outreach by the local agencies, and agencies may have incentive to skim the top of the eligible population. TDHCA should make sure that local agencies are both prioritizing and providing active outreach to families at or below the poverty level to make certain such families are benefiting from the program.

Does the program training provide sustainable skills? The recovery act increased the funding available for training and technical assistance from 10% of the program funds to 20%. This is an opportunity for a strong job-training component of the program that can provide skills to workers that will outlast the temporary WAP funding. TDHCA should maximize the workforce development impact of this funding.

Does the program actively enforce a high level of quality control? Weatherization is more than just caulking the holes in a house, and if done poorly can adverse affect air-quality. Weatherized homes should be inspected to ensure that the repairs created or maintained a healthful indoor environment in the home.

These are a few of the things we hope to follow as these programs get underway, and we’ll share any insights we discover here at Texas housers.

My first stab at The Meliorist’s opinion piece: Political change in Alberta tends to reflect t

My first stab at The Meliorist’s opinion piece:

Political change in Alberta tends to reflect the open expanse of land and the spread too thin homesteads that dominate our prairie province. Pockets of individuals alienated and disaffected by the central government, afraid the brave the harsh climate they perceive. Coupled with groups of elites, people in small and shaky compartments, lifted away from the groundswell, and isolated from each other.

These past six months have seen the political landscape in Alberta shift. It may be small and it may be that only the most hard core of political pundits have followed the minutia of our political landscape, but this shift is cataclysmic in terms of Alberta politics.

With another provincial election still three years away, voters are already questioning what their elected officials are doing to reflect their voice, in the legislature and in policy decisions. Albertan’s expressing dissidence have evolved past letter writing and direct engagement with MLA’s through town halls and the like. The calls for change are progressively more vocal and more public.

Pieces of legislation, such as Bill 44, are debated in the streets, in cafés, on Twitter, blogs, and through mainstream media. Daily newspapers now have blogging added to their web content to allow their journalists to be ever more present in Alberta and ever more relevant, and these journalists are using that to express and reflect Albertan’s dissatisfaction with their governments.

The Wildrose Alliance Party, a party that few Albertans took note of a mere 4 months ago, now has over 11 000 members, a seat in the Legislature, and more media coverage for their leadership convention than the opposition parties could muster for town hall on health care.

The visible advantage the WAP has gained is in large part due to their vocal criticisms of the Stelmach-led government. While the current opposition seems content to rest on their laurels and travel the province speaking to small groups of disenchanted Albertan’s, the WAP was aggregating legions of Albertan’s frustrated with the lack of responsiveness by their MLA’s and channeling that desire to “send Ed a message.” The Glenmore by-election win was the first public clue that we are indeed in the midst of a fundamental shift in the way Albertan’s are participating in their provincial democracy.

Progressives are seeing this, and noting the advantage it presents. Split the right to strengthen the left is a historically oft-used tactic, though in Alberta, changes in government rarely go left but they do always go big.

Events like ChangeCamp, and other grassroots movements do what the WAP has done already. They bring people together and work to unite them around a common cause. For the WAP it was to “send Ed a message”, which its new leader, Danielle Smith, seems to have taken up as her personal war cry. For the progressives, the rallying cry seems still unclear.

Summary: The number of people in the U.S. diagnosed with diabetes is now reaching 24 million. Diabet

Summary: The number of people in the U.S. diagnosed with diabetes is now reaching 24 million. Diabetes requires monitoring. In this article, get an introduction to the concept of continuing care, particularly in the home. This article describes how diabetes monitoring can be improved through collaborative technologies. See how software from MyCareTeam, IBM, and other organizations are used in an example in support of diabetes monitoring. Understand information and Web-based technologies, such as XML storage and services (for example, through IBM® DB2® pureXML™) in the context of continuing care, as well as related initiatives, such as the Continua Health Alliance’s role in selecting appropriate standards. This article summarizes the impact of these technologies on the building of agile and collaborative systems for healthcare, and highlights the significant benefits of collaborative continuing care that include cost reduction and increased quality of healthcare.

This article introduced some results concerning continuing care for diabetes. In particular, studies have shown that increased patient Health Care Practitioner interaction, especially more personalized interactions, increases patient frequency of blood glucose monitoring. Providing software that encourages personalized interactions improves diabetes monitoring. The contribution of Web-based technologies and associated initiatives, such as the MyCareTeam software, to share data is significant. In addition, the diabetes monitoring demonstration described in this article used standard specifications in the area of healthcare from HL7, IHE, and Continua, and in the area of XML from the W3C, such as XQuery. An XML store, DB2 pureXML, accessed through Universal Services, was used to easily store and manipulate monitoring information. Drawing from an online survey of 221+ professionals and practitioners, the report identifies the chief drivers and obstacles impacting mobile marketing growth. It also highlights the exciting business opportunities ahead for companies and brands that use the current economic climate to rethink marketing strategies and ramp up activities.

International survey reveals companies and brands bullish on mobile marketing benefits, but lack skills set to execute campaigns

Strong growth ahead for SMS and MMS messaging, positive outlook for branded apps and mobile websites

High interest in targeting consumers, high concerns that opt-in databases won’t deliver

Among the key findings:

Mobile is part of the mix to attract and keep customers: The vast majority of respondents (56%) currently use mobile to acquire new customers. But that will change as respondents follow through on their plans to boost customer retention and loyalty through mobile marketing (64%), streamline transactions (37%) and enable commerce and sales using a mobile device (37%).

Messaging is essential: Usage of MMS is poised for significant growth, with with 22% of respondents revealing plans to double deployment in the next six months. The use of SMS messaging is also on the rise, but will move from a one-way message to a two-way conversation.

Marked interest in more innovative formats: Respondents reported use of branded content will increase from 29% to 35%, use of branded apps will rise from 23% to 35%. Finally, use of mobile coupons and QR codes will jump from 20% to 31%.

Mobile marketing is teamwork: The vast majority of respondents (47%) outsource to providers that can meet their requirements for a fully-managed marketing solution. Campaign execution services was the most sought-after skill (57%), followed by measurement, analytics and reporting (54%), technical services and integration (52%), and mobile campaign management (52%).

Quality of opt-in campaign databases is a main concern: One-third of respondents (32%) expressed concern over the quality of the customer mobile phone numbers stored in their opt-in databases.

“Market adoption of mobile marketing is accelerating. The survey results and analysis show companies and brands recognize the business benefits associated with mobile marketing and are serious about integrating mobile in their strategies,” says Stanislas Chesnais, Chairman and CEO, Netsize. “Respondents told us they are increasing use of messaging to engage in conversations with consumers on their mobile phone, and stepping up efforts to harness other exciting formats and approaches such as WAP sites, mobile websites and branded content. This momentum can only grow as the economy picks up steam.”

1. Ordenadores: Hardware, software, pantalla, módem, impresora, scanner, Cd-Rom, disco duro extraíbl
