EUROVISION – The largest song contest in the world, with 42 countries participating in 2012 and more than a quarter of all countries in the world eligible to enter the song competition this is one of the most watched Televised non-sporting events in the world!

This runaway bubblegum pop train wreck of a contest is the best Kitsch entertainment in the world that has been broadcast yearly since 1956. If you are a fan of CHEESE, weird geo-politics and hosting or attending Eurotrash parties this is the contest for you!!!

IN ONE WORD IT’S LIKE ABBA!!! And guess what ABBA was the 1974 Eurovision winner for Sweden with “Waterloo”! It was this win that launched ABBA into superstardom!

Each country that participates sends one song which is usually picked by a national TV song contest in each country or picked by a panel of judges. This entry song then makes it to the Eurovision where after it is performed on live television it is voted on by each participating country and is allotted a number of cast votes to determine the most popular song of the contest!

And yes in the competition they have to sing live so note the wardrobe changes, the flashy lights, over the top dramatics on stage and of course sexy back up dancers! (YUM)

And then of course there are the GAYS!!!!
We love Eurovision and of course everyone knows this! We (gays) vote and since there are so many countries that participate with different languages and musical tastes one of the ways that contestants try to sway the audience is to appeal to the gay viewers because in most countries it is the viewers who vote live via telephones, texting and the internet which counts for half of the final score.

The video underneath is of Greece’s song entrance in 2010 “OPA” by Giorgos Alkeos & Friends – i think it was a great song and had some hotties dancing in it - though it did not win!

Besides the happy bubblegum type songs which seems to predominate the winners with a few exceptions trying to appeal to such a wide range of people with different musical tastes many singers choose to perform the whole or part of the song in English. English is not only the international language of business and computers but also more and more so of travel and inter-personal communication, more people speak English as their second or third language then there are native speakers of English in the world.

The video underneath is of Lena’s song “Satellite” the 2010 Eurovision winner for Germany and probably the reason she won over Greece’s entrance “OPA” was because she sang in English which more people were able to understand. (My friend from Portugal sincerely disagrees with me on this and says Lena’s song was better with a much broader appeal and a PR machine behind it to promote the song to the audience at large.) Compare the two and see for yourself.

One of my latest shoots was with Shadow Box Studios here in Edmonton, the Photographer was Scott Bruck and makeup/styling was done by Tegan Gardner. It was such a creative experience with many wardrobe changes and experimenting with new hair and makeup designs. The process was long but I had so many great shots to choose from so it was well worth the effort.

I will say that my hair definitely paid the price on this shoot, being backcombed and hair sprayed until it was just right. . It turned out great though and I can’t wait to see what kind of shoot I will have to do next to top that one : )

I thought of it as if QVC had the audacity to sell a piece of equipment that would give some people, not all, a new lease on life as their pounds are shed. Now with one simple gesture of being pointed at and cheeks being puffed out I’m sitting on my bed staring longingly at the Total Gym with a bowl of Ranch&Bacon Pasta salad. It’s sad really. Very pathetic.

I wore a skirt today that doesn’t zipper all the way anymore even though it fit perfectly just three weeks before I went to college. I had to toss away a stretch button up shirt this morning after feeling the tightness around my arms and witnessing the pulling of the buttons just above my belly button. I was worried all night that my new facebook friend, an internet friend mostly, would think I was fat despite everything that we’ve been through. As if he would abandon me because of the fifteen to twenty pounds I had packed around one thigh. I was reminded yesterday of a diet book I had read at age fourteen about snacking. All I can remember of the book was this lingering image of a fat woman sitting in the midst of nine black trashbags, homeless, and the fact that she ate seven times a day.

While I looked through my fashion book from the Kyoto Costume Institute in Japan, I couldn’t help but think that none of these dresses emphasized a waist size. They had a distinct silhouette but no matter the weight a woman would look beautiful and well put together. It gave me the idea of tossing away all my slouchy tee shirts and working nonstop on a wardrobe just like it. No one was ever concerned with being model thin. If anything they were worrying if their ass and hips looked too small and narrow. Unlike today where we wonder if we’re small enough, thin enough, and having curves at the same time.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the only people destined for modern society images are those who are born with the ‘inappropriate’ genes to be shapely and athletic. I was destined to be big boned with small chesticles and broad shoulders. I will only be thin with  lady bumps and lumps in my dreams, running and jumping on the backs of my lover, silky hair flying in the wind.

Time for another wardrobe change.

A lot of that had something to do with May 31st… Darin and Kacie got married that day. It was a beautiful day.

May 31st was also an absurdly long day. I woke up at 9:40 AM (to get ready for the wedding) and finally cried myself to sleep somewhere around 10:15 AM the next day. Yes… that’s more than 24 hours… and no nap. I woke up with mascara all over my face at about 11 AM and it was another hour before I was successfully asleep again… noon. Oy.

I wore four outfits on May 31st.

First, we had the jeans and button-up pink shirt with comfortable black sandals. Happy outfit. This is what I wore until it was absolutely necessary that I put on my dress for the wedding. 4 hours in that outfit.

Second, we had some medium-height heals and the black dress for the wedding (seen below). 4 hours in that outfit. (Note on the picture: this was during the foot washing… I was trying not to cry.)

Third, we had the other black dress. I changed into this to go to dinner with my roommates & that guy in the picture below. (There aren’t pictures of the other dress.) My roommates got icecream after dinner… we went to the KC symphony. 8 hours in that outfit as well.

And, finally, we have the outfit that I wore to St. Andrew’s that morning. Brown skirt, blue shirt… and the exact same shoes that I had been wearing since 2 PM that day… just in a different color. I spent about 9 hours in that outfit.

May 31st was pretty hard on my feet. I’m pretty sure there is no pair of heals that should be worn for 20 hours. And I wore essentially the same shoes in outfits 2-4

Richard and Brent sang at church that morning, so we got there with 45 minutes to spare before the service began. Being on hour 22 or so, I was in great need of caffeine. So Chris, Jordan and I walked to the Roasterie. Only… my feet really hurt… so I walked barefoot through Brookside. This was slightly painful but truly could not compare to the pain that my shoes were inflicting upon my feet at that time.

May 31st was also a big day for my blog. When I got on and looked at my recent blog stats, I noticed a strange peak on that day. I can’t come up with any explanation for this, but here it is:
