After the 312th left Hunter Field, they moved on to De Ridder Army Air Base, which was approximately 50 miles north of Lake Charles, Louisiana. While living at this smaller base, the 312th learned more about supporting ground units in combat. Through this training, they realized how much they needed to work on coordination between operations, intelligence, and communication personnel. Aircrews practiced various dive-bombing techniques and small groups of pilots and intelligence officers spent time with Army units learning about their strategy and tactics.
The Group stayed at De Ridder until they received orders on March 27, 1943 to pack up and move to their next base, Rice Army Air Base, in southern California. It took about two weeks for them to get everything ready for the cross-country trip. During this time, the Group had to deal with their first and only loss at De Ridder: 1/Lt. Elmer R. Cawthon had climbed into an A-24 for an unscheduled flight after leaving a gathering at the Officers’ Club. Cawthon’s plane never returned to the base. The plane wreckage was found near Camp Polk and it appeared that the Cawthon failed to pull the plane out of a steep dive.

Once at Rice, the Group discovered that the living conditions there were a far cry from the comforts they first experienced at Hunter Field. Here, the men lived in tents and endured desert temperatures of over 120 degrees. They couldn’t work between 12:30 and 5:00pm because planes, tools and vehicles were too hot to touch.

At Rice, the 312th’s training included lectures and drills with weapons instruction to sharpen their soldiering skills. While practicing the dive-bombing, the crews got bored bombing disks painted on the sand, so they scrounged around the desert and found abandoned cars from the 1930s. They also practiced attacking railroad centers, crossroads, and supply areas to improve their navigation and bombing skills.
In April, the 312th received their first Curtiss P-40 Warhawks. The A-24 was weak against the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M “Zeke” fighter in combat, so the group transitioned to the P-40. This single-seat, single-engine plane had six .50-caliber machine guns in the wings and held a 500-pound bomb under the fuselage.

The pilots had to get used to a few differences when flying the plane through a bombing run. There were no dive brakes, so pilots would reach nearly 500mph in a near-vertical dive. When approaching the target, the pilots had to quickly pull out of the dive and this was a very dangerous task. They switched from dive-bombing to glide bombing to keep planes at a 45-degree angle. While sorting out the differences between the two planes, the crews had a couple of other problems to deal with. The intense heat at Rice caused the P-40 engines to regularly overheat and the rubber on the landing gear to soften when the planes would land. Sand covered the runways and abraded the tires on landing. Because of this, P-40 tires were only good for about six landings.
In May, the 312th lost two members of the Group. 2/Lt. James N. Goe was flying an A-24 and demonstrating dive-bombing to his passenger, 1/Lt. James P. Matthews, when the plane inverted as it was coming out of the run and crashed into the trees.
By the time July rolled around, another move was imminent. This time to Salinas Army Air Base, 400 miles northwest of Monterey, California. At the new base, the 312th would have to work harder for proficiency in flying and maintaining the P-40, something they didn’t quite pass at Rice.
The Group was happy to be out of the scorching desert and back in the barracks at Salinas. Of course, the men were kept busy learning interception tactics and taking part in military training. While at this base, the 312th lost two more men. On September 12th, 2/Lt. William H. Gillette was flying a P-40 near Point Sur when he collided with another plane. Both pilots bailed out, but Gillette died of hypothermia. A week after Gillette’s crash, 1/Lt. Jay E. Gowers died when his P-40 crash-landed at Stockton, California. In September the Group started to prepare for the overseas voyage that would soon come. The 312th marched and hiked, practiced first aid, learned how to move up and down ship ladders and were taught censorship regulations and emergency procedures. On November 1, 1943, the Group left San Francisco aboard the S.S. Nieuw Amsterdam. They didn’t know where they were going until close to the end of the trip, but they knew they were heading to war.

Good evening everyone, it has been quite some time since my last post. Now, to get everyone up to sp

Good evening everyone, it has been quite some time since my last post. Now, to get everyone up to speed I unfortunately did not get married in the summer, as we all know a lack of finances can really throw a wrench into your plans. We now have roughly 40% of the money needed saved up and hopefully the rest will not take much longer. My fiancé started at the Lethbridge College this fall and is loving it so far and getting great marks. This is the last semester in my diploma and while I am very eager to finish off the first of many milestones I am also going to be missing this place once I have moved on. The Lethbridge College gets a 10/10 in my books: Great professors, modern buildings (at least for the business students), an ambitious President, and staff that are just the best. Also the vast majority of the students take it very seriously, and are quite the polite bunch when compared to what I witnessed during my one semester at the University of Lethbridge. You won’t find people budging in line or elbowing you out of their way.

My fiancé and me purchased laptops in August; the DV6 by HP and man are they nice, it was also a nice surprise regarding the price Futureshop gave us. I take my laptop with me everyday to the college, for the first month I used it to take notes and study however that really did not work out at all. My first batch of tests were all in the 60’s, and for me that is unacceptable. You do not get into Law School with those kind of grades even if your parents buy it a new wing lol.

I have some new games for my PS3; Metal Gear Solid 4, Warhawk, and Resistance. MGS4 is amazing, great graphics, amazing storyline, and after playing World at War again later on I have to say that the programming for collisions was done very well in MGS4. What I mean by collisions is that in most games you will quite often get ’stuck’ in a spot and will be unable to move. MGS4 had none of these issues. Also the soundtrack is brilliant. Warhawk was an alright game. It was easy to get started but quickly lost its allure. Good graphics and good fighting but a lack of any story or back history has relinquished this game to my secondary pile which is now collecting dust. Resistance is another game that is was done very well. If you are a graphics junky you probably will not agree with me and I understand why. The graphics were quite PS2 in my opinion, good, but not what one would expect on the PS3. What really made this game great was the storyline. It just grabs you and will not let go which makes it very similar to any of the Call of Duty games, Civilization and Evercrack (Everquest).

Over the next few months I will be covering a set group of topics and on the occasion an update on my own life. Here are those topics.

Abortion; I just found out that in Canada it is legal to have one right up until the 9th month. This is going to be a multipart series detailing my exploration of abortion in Canada.

The gang rape of a 15 year old girl in the United States and whether bystander’s are free of guilt morally and legally or should they be held accountable. In addition, what could be done to change the way 911 works. http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/10/28/california.rape.investigation/index.html

Taxes; which party really does favour lower taxes historically. In Canada would it be the Conservatives or the Liberals.

My personal view on various legal precedents from Canadian history.

My personal exploration of various battles throughout WW1 and WW2.

If anyone has a specific precedent that they would like me to review please just drop me a comment.

I am not a lawyer, nor am I even in law school yet so please take everything I say with regards to Canadian law with a giant grain of salt. I have taken business law and have an interest in law.

Thank you.

Piana delle Orme, located near Borgo Faiti some 90 kilometers to the South of Rome, is a historical park where visitors can find a heterogeneous and interesting collection that includes aircraft, tanks, locomotives, carts, models, weapons, radios. The museum’s exhibits focuses on the 20th Century. Its 14 pavilions are organized into two sections: the Agricultural Section and the War Section. The Agricultural section includes the following pavilions: Old-times Toys and Modelling (1 pavilion), Reclamation of Pontine Marshes (2 pavilions), Olden- times Farming Machines (1 pavilion), Life in the Country (2 pavilions). The War Section contains the following pavilions: Olden-times military vehicles (1 pavilion), From El Alamein to Messina and Salerno (2 pavilions), The Landing of Anzio (1 pavilion), Battle of Cassino (1 pavilion), Civilian Use of War Surplus (1 pavilion). A complete visit would take some 4 hours as each pavilion has textual boards and audio guides (available in English and German too). Interestingly both an F-104S/ASA-M (believed to be the MM6722 as the serial is missing) “9-35″ formerly belonging to the 9° Stormo at Grazzanise, and an EC-119G, visible from the car park are displayed in the area between the two rows of pavilions. The EC-119G is the example MM53-8146 “46-35″ an aircraft manufactured in 1953, employed by the Indian Air Force, then by the United Nations in Congo and later by the 46^ Aerobrigata of the Aeronautica Militare at Pisa. For this reason the aircraft still wears the 46^ AB markings. In 1975, the aircraft was modified and then taken on charge by the 71° Gruppo at Pratica di Mare, and used with radio callsign “Perseo 35″ as an Electronic Warfare asset. The aircraft made its last flight on Oct. 31, 1979 and it was the last Fairchild “Flying Boxcar” operating in Europe. It was initially destined to the Museo Storico Aeronautica Militare (ItAF Museum) at Vigna di Valle, but after resting many years at Pratica di Mare, it was acquired by the Piana delle Orme Museum in 1998. As picture I took in August 2009 show, the aircraft is in almost perfect conditions; furthermore, an hydraulic system allows the rotation of the propellers by inserting a 2 Euro coin in a sort of parking meter. The “Sbarco di Anzio” pavilion (for the story of the famous Anzio Beachhead click here) contains the remain of a Curtiss P-40L “Warhawk”. The aircraft sank in the sea in front of Latina on Jan. 31, 1944, after a successful ditching performed by Lt. Michael Mauritz. He was flying the Curtiss P40L dubbed “Skipper” in a reconnaissance mission on Anzio when he was forced to land on sea following serious overheating problems at the engine. Althought he was able to escape the sinking aircraft and reach the beach on a lifeboat, he was taken by the Germans. Helped by partisans, he was able to escape from the prison camp of Laterina (Arezzo) and after a long and difficult escape across Italy he was able to rejoin with his unit: the 79th Fighter Group. In September 1998 Michael Mauritz was invited to Piana delle Orme for the presentation of his aircraft that was recovered from the sea-bed where it laid at a depth of 10 meters at short distance from the beach, on Jan. 11, 1998.

For those interested in a visit, I suggest having a look at the Museum’s website whose contents are available in Italian, English and German language.

Residents of Chahar Dara district in northern Kunduz province say more than 150 civilians were killed and 20 others wounded in Friday’s air strike by NATO-led forces.

The bombing in Haji Aman village came as insurgents and residents emptied oil into jerry canes from tankers hijacked by Taliban militants from the Kunduz-Baghlan Highway.

Inhabitants of the area told Pajhwok Afghan News all those killed in the bombardment were civilians and there were no Taliban at the site at the time the attack took place. Fighters had left the scene after they asked the people to take fuel for free.

An elder from Sarak-i-Bala neighbourhood, Abdul Rahim, said 15 children were among the 50 people of Yaqubi village killed in the bombing raid.

The man, who lost two sons in the incident, argued: “Poverty brought us to this stage.” No guerrillas were among the dead, he said, explaining the fighters well before the deadly assault.

A 50-year-old woman bitterly cried while standing in front of her ruined house. She said her three sons, husband and a grandson perished in the bombardment. Locals showed this reporter as many as 50 graves of civilian victims.

In the Maulvi Naeem village, residents said 20 civilians were killed in the incident. Haji Najmuddin, a tribal elder, lost two nephews. He claimed chemicals bombs were dropped on the villagers. Clothes of his nephews were not damaged but their bodies were badly charred, the man argued.

This reporter saw the graves of those killed in the air strike. Seventy of the fatalities were from Yaqubi and Maulvi Naeem villages and the rest from three other areas.

Meanwhile, Kunduz Governor Eng. Muhammad Omar said a delegation from Kabul had arrived in the district to investigate the incident and determine the exact number of civilian deaths.

Paul Craig Roberts
Antiwar.com
September 7, 2009

Americans have lost their ability for introspection, thereby revealing their astounding hypocrisy to the world.

U.S. War Secretary Robert Gates has condemned the Associated Press and a reporter, Julie Jacobson, embedded with U.S. troops in Afghanistan, for taking and releasing a photo of a U.S. Marine who was wounded in action and died from his injury.

The photographer was on patrol with the Marines when they came under fire. She found the courage and presence of mind to do her job. Her reward is to be condemned by the warmonger Gates as “insensitive.” Gates says her employer, the Associated Press, lacks “judgment and common decency.”

The American Legion jumped in and denounced the Associated Press for a “stunning lack of compassion and common decency.”

To stem opposition to its wars, the War Department hides signs of American casualties from the public. Angry that evidence escaped the censor, the war secretary and the American Legion attacked with politically correct jargon: “insensitive,” “offended,” and the “anguish” and “pain and suffering” inflicted upon the Marine’s family. The War Department sounds like it is preparing a harassment tort.

Isn’t this passing the buck? The Marine lost his life not because of the Associated Press and a photographer, but because of the war criminals – Gates, Bush, Cheney, Obama, and the U.S. Congress that supports wars of naked aggression that serve no American purpose, but which keep campaign coffers filled with contributions from the armaments companies.

Marine Lance Cpl. Joshua M. Bernard is dead because the U.S. government and a significant percentage of the U.S. population believe that the U.S. has the right to invade, bomb, and occupy other peoples who have raised no hand against us but are demonized with lies and propaganda.

For the American war secretary it is a photo that is insensitive, not America’s assertion of the right to determine the fate of Afghanistan with bombs and soldiers.

The exceptional “virtuous nation” does not think it is insensitive for America’s bombs to blow innocent villagers to pieces. On Sept. 4, the day before Gates’ outburst over the “insensitive” photo, Agence France Presse reported from Afghanistan that a U.S./NATO air strike had killed large numbers of villagers who had come to get fuel from two tankers that had been hijacked from negligent and inattentive occupation forces:

“’Nobody was in one piece. Hands, legs, and body parts were scattered everywhere. Those who were away from the fuel tanker were badly burnt,’ said 32-year-old Mohammad Daud, depicting a scene from hell. The burned-out shells of the tankers, still smoking in marooned wrecks on the riverbank, were surrounded by the charred-meat remains of villagers from Chahar Dara district in Kunduz province, near the Tajik border. Dr. Farid Rahid, a spokesperson in Kabul for the ministry of health, said up to 250 villagers had been near the tankers when the air strike was called in.”

What does the world think of the United States? The American war secretary and a U.S. military veterans association think a photo of an injured and dying American soldier is insensitive, but not the wipeout of an Afghan village that came to get needed fuel.

The U.S. government is like a criminal who accuses the police of his crime when he is arrested or a sociopathic abuser who blames the victim. It is a known fact that the CIA has violated U.S. law and international law with its assassinations, kidnappings, and torture. But it is not this criminal agency that will be held accountable. Instead, those who will be punished will be those moral beings who, appalled at the illegality and inhumanity of the CIA, leaked the evidence of the agency’s crimes. The CIA has asked the U.S. Justice (sic) Department to investigate what the CIA alleges is the “criminal disclosure” of its secret program to murder suspected foreign terrorist leaders abroad. As we learned from Gitmo, those suspected by America are overwhelmingly innocent.

The CIA program is so indefensible that when CIA director Leon Panetta found out about it six months after being in office, he cancelled the program (assuming those running the program obeyed) and informed Congress.

Yet, the CIA wants the person who revealed its crime to be punished for revealing secret information. A secret agency this unmoored from moral and legal standards is a greater threat to our country than are terrorists. Who knows what false flag operation it will pull off in order to provide justification and support for its agenda. An agency that is more liability than benefit should be abolished.

The agency’s program of assassinating terrorist leaders is itself fraught with contradictions and dangers. The hatred created by the U.S. and Israel is independent of any leader. If one is killed, others take his place. The most likely outcome of the CIA assassination program is that the agency will be manipulated by rivals, just as the FBI was used by one mafia family to eliminate another. In order to establish credibility with groups that they are attempting to penetrate, CIA agents will be drawn into participating in violent acts against the U.S. and its allies.

Accusing the truthteller instead of the evildoer is the position that the neoconservatives took against the New York Times when after one year’s delay, which gave George W. Bush time to get reelected, the Times published the NSA leak that revealed that the Bush administration was committing felonies by violating the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The neocons, especially those associated with Commentary magazine, wanted the New York Times indicted for treason. To the evil neocon mind, anything that interferes with their diabolical agenda is treason.

This is the way many Americans think. America über alles! No one counts but us (and Israel). The deaths we inflict and the pain and suffering we bring to others are merely collateral damage on the bloody path to American hegemony.

The attitude of the “freedom and democracy” U.S. government is that anyone who complains of illegality or immorality or inhumanity is a traitor. The Republican Sen. Christopher S. Bond is a recent example. Bond got on his high horse about “irreparable damage” to the CIA from the disclosures of its criminal activities. Bond wants those “back stabbers” who revealed the CIA’s wrongdoings to be held accountable. Bond is unable to grasp that it is the criminal activities, not their disclosure, that is the source of the problem. Obviously, the Whistleblower Protection Act has no support from Sen. Bond, who sees it as just another law to plough under.

This is where the U.S. government stands today: Ignoring and covering up government crimes is the patriotic thing to do. To reveal the government’s crimes is an act of treason. Many Americans on both sides of the aisle agree.

Yet, they still think that they are The Virtuous Nation, the exceptional nation, the salt of the earth.

With the release of the PS3 Slim on the horizon everyone is eagerly anticipating Sony closing the gap between the 360 and itself this generation (some more hopeful for the holidays!). I on the other hand can care less; I just want to see more games! More importantly I want to see games that utilize the PSN a lot more. Although the PSN is a great service, everyone seems to think of it as an after thought. There are a few ways Sony can help promote the online service and change those minds in the process:

Sony should do more advertising specifically about the PSN (which has been done) What they need to do is be more aggressive on the price point (which is at a staggering free!) and compare it to the competition, after all who can compete with free!

They should create a cheaper alternate headset for the PS3 besides the sexy Bluetooth that came bundled with SOCOM: Confrontation, but not the one bundled with Warhawk.

Pair the cheaper headset (or the Bluetooth) with the PS3 Slim or at least give the consumer a voucher for 50 percent off on the Bluetooth headset.

Although I love the PSN, communication amongst its players is not the most engaging thing and if you’re a competitive gamer, like myself, you want to be able to communicate with your team even when you’re in public matches. Forget cross game chat; just give them the means to communicate in the first place.

Now I understand that including the headset may increase the price of the console but if Sony is serious about making the PSN a better service compared to XBL, and trust me when I say they are almost there, communication should be taken seriously. Perhaps making a cheaper more accessible version to the Bluetooth which is labeled as an official Sony product may be the best way to go too.

What does the community think? Is communication as important, or could you do without it?

Let me know in the comments section below!

Every once in a while there is a game that really stands the test of time. God of War, Halo, Goldeneye, and Quake are a few of those games but in this generation and on the PS3, Warhawk has stood as one of the most popular games on the platform. The spot on game play and fantastic visuals have really stood the test of time and are proof in itself that the PS3 is in fact future proof. While it may not be the most “realistic” looking game it has a unique art style that no game on the platform has.

Warhawk was also proof that the PSN was just as good as Xbox Live, connection wise (at least to me). The developers also supported the game with constant updates (player requested) and DLC that added maps, game types, and weapons. Warhawk was also one of the first full scale retail games to be offered on the PlayStation Store, lets not forget it was also one of the first titles to have a national tournament courtesy of GGL.

Pretty much Warhawk could be considered the pioneer of eSports on the PS3!

Salutations to Incog and their masterfully crafted game, this post is for you!

The folks at Activision sent us an all-platform assault of their new Sci-Fi Nazi shooter, so I’m betting on some heavy hours logged by the Da Creatures this weekend. You’ll find me in the Black Market upgrading my Veil powers! With SummerSlam this weekend, I might also be into some Multiplayer action with Smackdown vs Raw 2009 on the PS3. James S.

A loudspeaker outside the museum, announced that the P-40 pilots were going to start their pre-flight walk-arounds. We hurried outside and met up with our fellow photographer and rushed to obtain a good viewing point to watch those amazing P-40’s take-off. In the meantime, we had plenty of opportunity to snap pictures of each plane, along with their pilots and passengers.

Warhawk Taxing to runway

With the crank of starters and puffs of oily smoke filling our lungs, the roar of the crowd and the roar of radial engines soon reverberated along the rope line. Although our view was blocked by several large hangars, we watched as the multi-colored planes taxied towards a waiting runway. Within minutes, we saw them rise into the air and begin their never ending circle over our heads.

One could only imagine, the P-40’s coming in over a mountaintop and strafing or bombing an airfield, as the menacing eyes and teeth on the nose cones, sent superstitious Japanese soldiers scurrying for cover.

After about a half hours flight time, they landed and taxied back towards our location. We were fortunate to be next to the two rows of hangars they taxied between and parked near our location.

If you have ever played Warhawk on the PS3, then you have an idea of what that would be like in space. Sony just registered the name “Starhawk” making many hope for a sequel.
However, what I find really thought-provoking is a comment I saw on Kotaku: next is World of Warhawk. Now, I know whoever said that was making a joke or snide remark, but I couldn’t help but get excited at the idea of it. I have never found myself wanting to spend the monthly cost to play a MMO, but I have always loved the idea of a really great MMO… something so good it can cause my divorce.
Besides this nonexistent MMO, I am excited about the idea of the (currently in-the-works) DC Universe MMO, the new Star Wars one, and Champions Online. We shall see!

Today recent reports from GDC came in that OnLive may in fact be the “be all end all” of

Today recent reports from GDC came in that OnLive may in fact be the “be all end all” of consoles. Why? To simply put it OnLive can stream content from a network and you download it from said network to your cheap and inexpensive box. Think Live Arcade 10.0…

Not only will this kill the physical disc, but it may also kill the Big 3

The games that were played by the privileged folks of the game industry were Burnout Paradise and Crysis. The overall impression from everyone is that the service is good but fourzerotwo of Call of Duty 4 fame (via his twitter) had this to say:

“Last bit about OnLive – There’s no doaubt this will be amazing for SP games imo, but not convinced it’ll work well for MP on avg connections”

Now don’t get me wrong I am not trying to belittle OnLive being that it JUST was announced but fourzerotwo may have a point! How will an MP game of Halo handle with this service (If Halo would even come out for it) or any game for that matter! Think of something as massive as Warhawk or the potential MAG, it could prove chaotic, also bear in mind that this test was done on a controlled network. So these impressions of course are not based on what the service will be like when it hits the shelves and to your home (if you even bother).

Will the Fanboy power of the Console’s outshine the new kid on the block?

Chime in on the comments section and let us know whay you think!

A declaração do chefão do Lightbox Interactive, Dylan Jobe, apenas aumenta a força do suposto novo Warhawk:

“Estamos incrivelmente felizes emc ontinuar trabalhando com a Sony. temos uma ótima relação com eles e sou muito orgulhoso pela nova parceria. Em relação á inevitável pergunta ‘Em que vocês tão trabalhando?’… È cedo demais para comentar qualquer coisa mas eu posso dizer que temos coisas muito excitantes em desenvolvimento que nossos fãs de Warhawk *E* novos jogadores amarão.”
