” Our digital strategy continues to evolve and we are experimenting with multiple ways to monetize our artist content through social media sites as well as other key distribution points. To that end, we are pleased that we recently reached a new and expanded agreement with Google and its YouTube subsidiary. This agreement has recently brought WMG content back to this important service. As part of the new relationship, YouTube has improved its user experience by presenting our artist music videos with a feature rich, high quality premium player, video watch pages, and channels. We believe the new agreement with YouTube establishes a platform that provides an integrated artist focused approach and creates greater monetization opportunities with premium brand advertisers. It also gives music fans enhanced access to content they desire through links to artist websites.

Furthermore, Google is also expanding its connection to music with the launch of One Box, a search application that delivers in response to standard search queries a pre-configured set of music content and commerce links. This service enables the sampling and purchase of music with several partners, including LaLa, MySpace Music, iMeme, Pandora, and Rhapsody. We expect that One Box will drive increased music discovery and download purchasing.

Further supporting our social media strategy, Facebook recently launched a music gifting consumer offer powered by LaLal. The service is designed to enable users to purchase MP3 downloads and web songs as gifts for their friends on Facebook. Facebook users can also index and stream their own music collections from their profile pages, as well as sample and purchase new music. We are delighted to see a confluence of pioneering new services supporting our content in the expanding digital marketplace.

As new mobile products and business models are rolled out on a global basis, and as device capabilities and network technologies advance, we believe mobile revenue growth will accelerate despite declining ringtone activity in the U.S. and Europe. For example, we remain optimistic about access models as a driver of digital revenue, though they may take some time to gain meaningful traction. Access models typically bundle the purchase of a mobile device with access to music.”

News Corp owned MySpace will purchase independent online music service Imeem, in a deal which is reported to be $1million in cash. Imeem has been in financial trouble for a while, and has run through an estimated $30million in investor dollars.

Among the investors, all four major record labels, although earlier this year Warner Music wrote off its investment in the service. In 2007, Imeem became the first ad supported on-demand online music service to negotiate deals with all four major labels. Those deals included equity which made partners of the four major labels. MySpace also has partnership deals in place with the four major labels.

A few months ago MySpace acquired online music service iLike, with 50 million registered listeners, for a reported $20million. Comscore estimated that Imeem had 16 million unique visitors in September. It’s impossible to compare these two numbers except to say that it doesn’t sound like Imeem is a lot smaller than iLike to me.

MySpace now owns two of the five online music services that announced partnerships with Google’s new music platform. The way that works is that Google drives traffic to partner sites who play the music and pay the royalties.

Recently Spotify delayed their US launch due to problems negotiating a license for ad supported on demand streaming with the record companies. Plug that info into the fact that Imeem was about to get acquired by MySpace for so little, and it’s easy to understand why Spotify is meeting with some opposition. Seems like the record companies want to limit their exposure on the ad supported revenue model…

Luise Gruber (aka Saint Lu) wuchs in einem kleinen Dorf in Oberösterreich auf (Nähe Wels) und wusste schon mit 8 Jahren, dass sie Musikerin werden wollte: „Meine erste eigene CD war Janis Joplin. Als ich die mit acht bekam, habe ich sofort entschlossen, dass ich Sängerin werden will. Ich habe in meiner eigenen kleinen Welt gelebt. Wir hatten ganz wenige Nachbarn und ich konnte rumschreien, was das Zeug hält und habe Zuhause meine Performances hingelegt. Meine Eltern waren wirklich froh, als ich dann auch öffentliche Auftritte hatte und nicht mehr so viel Zuhause gemacht habe.“ Zu ihren Musik-Vorbildern zählen neben Janis Joplin auch Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin und Big Mama Thornton.

Im Teeniealter gründete sie eine Band, ging mit 18 nach Amerika und studierte dann auf einer Schauspielschule. Ihren Traum mit Musik durchzustarten wollte sie dennoch nicht begraben. Bei der Castingshow “Starmania” versuchte sie ihr Glück. Es klappte nicht. Trotzdem nahm Saint Lu eine Demo-CD auf und verschickte diese an zahlreiche Produzenten. Patrick Majer (Echo-Gewinner & Produzent von “Wir sind Helden”, “No Angels”, Nina Hagen, “Rosenstolz”, usw.) wurde auf die hübsche und vor allem talentierte Rockröhre aufmerksam und lud sie nach Berlin ein. Dort blieb sie bis heute.

Letzten Freitag kam Saint Lu’s Debütalbum auf den Markt. Die erste Single heißt “Don’t miss your own life” und der Vergleich mit Superstars wie Anastacia und Janis Joplin drängt sich beim Hören des Songs automatisch auf. Im Video spielt Saint Lu das Engelchen und Teufelchen.

Die Streicher des Songs wurden übrigens in den legendären Londoner Abbey Road Studios eingespielt - in diesem Interview plaudert Saint Lu über diese wunderbare Erfahrung, ihr Album, ihr Leben, usw.!

Ich bin völlig begeistert von Saint Lu – sie hat das Zeug die Rocklandschaft ordentlich aufzumischen, internationale Erfolge verbuchen zu können und ihre zeitlosen, aber trotzdem zeitgemäßen Songs der breiten Maße schmackhaft zu machen. Ihre rauchige, leidenschaftliche Stimme geht ins Ohr und ihre sympathische Art verzaubert!

Was sagt ihr zur österreichischen Rockröhre?

A continuación voy a detallar una pequeña lista de lo que a mi parecer son los mejores grupos y artistas del pop-rock nacional.

LOS PIRATAS: El grupo vigués nace a principios de los noventa y sacará a lo largo de su carrera 5 discos editados y varios directos y recopilatorios. En sus doce años de andadura siempre han trabajado con la discográfica Warner Music Spain. En cuanto a su música están claramente influenciados por el pop-rock ochentero con mezclas psicodélicas y se puede apreciar que en sus canciones cuidan hasta el más mínimo detalle. En febrero de 2004 anuncian la disolución del grupo, somos muchos a día de hoy los que esperamos una gira recordando todos esos temas insuperables.

M-CLAN: Una de las bandas pop-rock más consilidadas de nuestro país. Naturales de Murcia, la banda se crea en 1992 y saca su primer álbum de estudio en 1995 al que le seguirían cinco más, un recopilatorio y un directo. El grupo ha recibido grandes críticas desde sus comienzos y llegan a compartir cartel en escenarios con Bon Jovi. En la gira de “Sin enchufe” se crean fuertes roces entre los músicos y Santi Campillo (guitarrista y una de las piezas fundamentales del grupo) abandona la banda, lo que no fue determinante para que el grupo siga triunfando con Carlos Raya como sustituto del guitarrista citado anteriormente.

AMARAL: El grupo zaragozano está formado por Eva Amaral y Juan Aguirre. Se crea a mediados de los noventa y desde entonces han editado cinco álbum de estudio. Alcanzan el auge de su carrera con su tercer trabajo, “Estrella de mar”, con el que consiguen vender la friolera de 2.000.000 de copias y un gran número de premios musicales. Además de sus discos, también cuentan con dos DVD de sus conciertos en el mercado. Es uno de los grupos que más éxitos cosecha en la actualidad.

GUARANÁ: Es un grupo de Alicante que cuenta con cinco trabajos a sus espaldas. Nace a finales de los noventa y tienen canciones tan reconocidas como “La casa de Inés”, “Noche en vela” o “La furgoneta del amor”. El timbre de voz tan característico de Juanra y la naturalidad con la que David toca la guitarra son la esencia de este grupo alicantino. En la actualidad están componiendo para su siguiente disco a la vez que ofrecen algún que otro concierto de su último trabajo, “De lao a lao”, por la geografía española.

PEREZA: Este grupo madrileño tiene ya cinco discos editados y un recopilatorio en el que colaboran artistas de la talla de Bumbury o Ariel Rot. Lo componen Rubén y Leiva y nace en el año 1999. Empiezan tocando versiones por diferentes locales de Madrid y es en el año 2001 cuando lanzan su primer disco. En el mercado cuentan con un DVD de concierto en directo por cada disco que tienen. Su último trabajo, con un toque mucho más acústico que los anteriores, fue publicado este mismo año y está siendo todo un éxito. Cuenta además con la colaboración de Calamaro y Ariel Rot en las canciones “Amelie” y “Señor kioskero” respectivamente.

DELUXE: Deluxe es Xoel, un coruñés que en mayo de 2001 publica su primer álbum con un single de presentación, “I´ll see you in London”, del que pronto se recogen buenas criticas en los medios. Este primer disco y el siguiente que editaría en 2003 son íntegramente en inglés. En marzo de 2004 nos sorprende por fin con un single en castellano, “Que no”, colándose en lo más alto de las listas de ventas. Llegarían más tarde otros de sus éxitos como “Tendremos que esperar” o “Historia Universal (el amor no es lo que piensas)”. El 1 de noviembre de 2008 ofrece su último concierto como “Deluxe” y el cantante anuncia que se irá a América por tiempo indefinido para cambiar de aires y tocar con gente de alli.

VEGA: La carrera de esta cordobesa comienza en el año 2002 cuando entra en el concurso “Operación Triunfo”. Con su primer disco, “India” con “Grita” como single de presentación, consigue los dos premios “Eñe” más importantes, a mejor álbum y a mejor canción, además llega a ser disco de platino (más de 110.000 copias vendidas). Detrás vendrían “Circular” y una reedición de este con dos temas nuevos, “Y llueve” y “Clave de Sol”. En 2009 sale a la venta su cuarto álbum, “Metamorfosis”, con el que rompe todos los esquemas, un disco optimista, con toques de “swing” y un “Mejor mañana” que se convierte en una de las canciones del verano. Actualmente se encuentra promocionando el segundo single “Cuanta decepción”.

LA CAJA DE PANDORA: Este grupo de Barcelona salta a la fama en el año 2001 con la publicación de su álbum “A nuestra vida otro sentío” y su single “No me preguntes niña donde voy” siendo uno de los grupos más reconocidos del momento. Dos años más tarde se edita “Vencidos por el tiempo”, es entonces cuando las cosas se empiezan a torcer para el grupo, la discográfica por la que habían fichado, “Tempo Music”, quiebra por lo que ni el grupo ni el disco tienen promoción. En el 2006, ya con “Vale Music”, editan “Acuérdate bien de mi cara”, álbum que lógicamente funciona mejor que el anterior pero no tan bien como el primero. En 2008 sacan su último disco hasta el momento, “No perder el norte”.

In 1974, Rolling Stone music journalist Jon Landau boosted a then little known musician’s career by declaring, “I have seen the future of rock and roll, and its name is Bruce Springsteen”. Fast forward to 2009 and the future of rock and roll isn’t a person. It’s not even a band. It’s an online music service called Spotify. It isn’t just a game changer for the music industry. It’s a first glimpse of the future of all home entertainment.

Spotify is a music streaming service without the need to buy songs to listen to them. It’s basically Apple’s iTunes, except it’s free. 4 million songs are available and it’s legal since major music labels - Universal Music, Sony BMG, EMI Music, Warner Music – are shareholders. Spotify is an attempt to beat music piracy and it seems to be working.

There is a catch. Australia doesn’t have access to Spotify’s delights yet. The UK, France, Spain, Finland, Norway and Sweden are the current lucky countries. The USA and China will soon have access. However, it’s easy to bypass this tricky geographical problem.

I’ve been using Spotify and it‘s terribly addictive. Remember when you used to make mix tapes for friends, lovers and friends you desperately hoped would be your lover? Spotify allows you to build music playlists and share them with friends/lovers/others who can marvel at your impeccable taste in music. Playlist links can be sent via Twitter and/or Facebook. You can even allow friends to add or delete songs on shared playlists. Recently, Apple approved an application allowing Spotify music to stream directly to iPhones.

The future is now. Some luddites will cling to vinyl records. Some may even persist with CDs. But the majority will listen to music this way once it goes mass market. To be commercially viable, it’s likely all users will eventually have to subscribe. Reliability, convenience and legality means most won’t begrudge paying the approximate $20 monthly subscription Spotify’s premium service costs. I’d certainly subscribe if it was available in Australia.

We won’t own music but will be able to listen to anything any time we want. Movies will be next. And, if Rupert Murdoch and rivals are able to build a similar single point user friendly ‘pick and mix’ delivery system offering a compilation of their individual content, people may be willing to pay for online news. Unfortunately News Corp’s own foray into a similar music system – MySpace Music – is frustratingly clunky so you have to wonder whether they could build a seamless and intuitive integrated online news service that people would be willing to pay for.

However, if the notoriously antagonistic music labels can work together to sell their collective wares surely media companies can see sense in a little collaboration? Better to get a little money from most readers than no money from all.

This week the train stops at Madonna’s unforgettable 1986 album “True Blue”, dedicated to her then husband Sean Penn this album was deemed more girly and fun than her predecessors Madonna and Like a Virgin. Spawning 5 hit singles this album is said to be the one that secured her place as a superstar in the 80s. I disagree I feel all of her albums up to this point helped her career as they all had several major hits but this one I suppose is different as she took it in a different direction sound wise.

This may be old news now – however for those that don’t know, word is the original Sugababes are in discussions with Warner Music to reform. If this happens it will be pure comedy, we could have like a Sugababes catfight at the BRIT Awards or something for the band name.

All I do hope, is that the original Sugababes (v1.0) also use the name The Sugababes and then they can confuse the f*** out of everybody.  One group could play the O2 and the other Wembley Arena on the same night and we could see who wins… the fun is endless.

Please Warner, let this happen… if Warner are too chicken sh*t, someone else please step in.  Girls, you probably got enough money, fund the comeback yourselves!  Do you know the legs they will get from this on Never Mind the Buzzcocks!

Search giant Google has entered the online music market with a new service for finding and buying music online.

Google announced Wednesday that it was indeed adding music streams to its search results thanks to a partnership with Lala, MySpace (with streaming from iLike), Rhapsody, and imeem. The search giant has struck licensing deals with EMI, Universal, Warner Music, and Sony Music to bring streams of popular music to the search page via the streaming partners, while the likes of iLike and Lala will be bringing their collection of independent artists as well.

Now, whenever you search for a musical artist, a song, or even a lyric (thanks to Gracenote), Google will include streams right there in your search results along with links to the other services. We decided to give this new feature a run-through to see just what it could handle, and came away (mostly) liking what we saw.

For now, Google’s musical search results are limited to the United States. This will be a disappointment for the millions of Google users who live elsewhere, but as we have learned from many years of music coverage, this has to be a licensing issue with the music labels. Google says that the feature is slowly rolling out across the US, but if you want to test it out right this minute, you can go to a special page to run your search queries.

Many times, though, you don’t know the name of the song or the artist who sings it. Maybe you remember only the chorus — or maybe you remember who sang it, but you forgot the exact name of the song. If you’ve ever heard a catchy song in a car or cafe, but just can’t figure out the name of the song, . This search feature also helps you find many of those songs by entering a search containing a line or two of lyrics.

Finally, a search engine should also be able to help you discover music you’ll like, even if you can’t tell it what exactly you want to hear. Google partnered with Pandora, imeem and Rhapsody to include links to their sites where you can discover music related to your queries as well.

This feature doesn’t just make search better. It also helps people discover new sources of licensed music online while helping artists to discover new generations of fans and reconnect with longtime listeners.

Google has signed a deal with MySpace and online music player Lala to add music to its search results starting in the US today.

Potrivit informatiilor furnizate de site-ul TechCrunch, Google va oferi pe site-ul sau o fereastra prin intermediul careia utilizatorii vor putea asculta diverse melodii. 

In plus, noul serviciu al Google le ofera si posibilitatea de a-si achizitiona melodiile preferate prin intermediul site-urilor iLike si LaLa

Potrivit acelorasi surse, anuntul oficial al lansarii serviciului va fi facut pe 28 octombrie, la Los Angeles.

Potrivit Wall Street Journal, patru mari case de discuri, Warner Music, EMI, Sony si Universal, deja partenere ale Google pentru difuzarea de continuturi video pe platforma YouTube, au acceptat sa colaboreze si pentru noul serviciu muzical.

Acest nou serviciu va simplifica pentru utilizatori procesul de achizitii muzicale, care se vor putea face direct de pe pagina Google.

In its neverending quest to rule Earth and everyone who dwells upon it, Google is now apparently cannonballing into the music industry with a new music search and download section, setting the company up for a battle royale with Apple’s iTunes Music Store. An announcement is scheduled to blast out next Wednesday that details Google’s new music thingy, which will include links to artist news, song lyrics and videos — along with ways to preview and buy tracks via Lala and iLike, according to Associated Press sources.

Apparently, several labels — including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Group — started talking to Google about this a year ago and will be working with them on this new deal, giving the labels yet another avenue of online sales. Google allegedly won’t see any cash from song downloads, but will make its money off ads on the search result pages. That could get interesting….

Sans doute que Google Music Service compétitionnera rapidement le iTunes de Apple.

Il sera intéressant de voir la réponse de Microsoft à Google Music Service.

Earlier this year, Irv Gotti was out promoting the second season of his VH1 reality series, “Gotti’s Way.” Aside from the show, he talked about the artists on his label, Murder Inc. He mentioned that the label’s contract with Universal Records was over, so they were free to move on.

It turns out that Murder Inc. Records has no deal and no actually signed artists. His longtime flagship artist, Ja Rule is committed to the label, but he is not signed because the label, itself, has no deal. Soon, Lloyd announced that he had left the label and Gotti announced that he was dropping Ashanti.

One statement that was made has been overlooked, though. During an interview back in April about the state of his label, Irv Gotti said that Murder Inc. was preparing to sign with Warner/Atlantic and that he was meeting with Lyor Cohen to establish a deal. Diddy has left Atlantic Records and the label is looking for a president.

There have not been any other hip hop sites to mention the comment that Gotti made. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Atlantic Records was looking for a label president and Irv Gotti has a great track record. It would make sense for him to take over, plus he needs a label to release the new music coming from his label.

Think about it, Ja Rule has a new album coming in 2010, Newz has his debut album coming in 2010, and Ashanti is working on a new album. If Gotti signed a deal with Atlantic, he will probably also become the label’s president, so that deal would not finalize until sometime next year.

Ich bin mir sicher, jeder kennt das unermüdlich vorgetragene Geschrei der (vor allem) großen Musikkonzerne wegen ach so böser Raubmorddownloader und Musikdiebe, und dass diese Kapitalverbrecher einzig und allein am Niedergang des Musikbusiness schuld sind. Und das Musiker durch dieses zahlungsunwillige Gesindel um ihren gerechten Lohn gebracht werden.

In den Chor derer, die diesen Behauptungen nicht ansatzweise zustimmen können, stimmt nun auch Grace Maxwell, Lebensgefährtin und Managerin von Edwyn Collins, ein. Und sie bringt eine Unsitte der Labels zur Sprache, die deren Barmen und Greinen doch gleich in einem ganz anderen Licht erscheinen lässt – nämlich dem der doppelzüngigen, widerwärtigen Verlogenheit, sind es doch die Labels, die Künstler richtig und ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken bescheißen.

Aber fangen wir doch von vorne an, genauer bei Edwyn Collins’ offizieller Myspace-Seite. Dort beschreibt Grace mit reichlich dickem Hals folgendes Erlebnis mit der ach so sehr um das Künstlerwohl besorgten Labelwelt:

At the beginning of this year I noticed that Edwyn’s myspace had gone bit wonky and I tried to upload the tracks back on to the music player. His most famous track, which he owns the copyright in, as he does for most of the music he’s recorded in his life (preferring to go it alone than have his music trapped “in perpetuity” to use the contract language of the major record company) is called A Girl Like You. It’s quite famous. Lo and behold, it would not upload, I was told Edwyn was attempting to breach a copyright and he was sent to the Orwellian myspace copyright re-education page. Quite chilling, actually. I naturally blew my stack and wrote to myspace on his behalf demanding to know who the hell was claiming copyright of Edwyn’s track? Which, incidentally, he always made freely available for download on myspace, something which amazed his followers. Eventually, after HUGE difficulty, I was told Warner Music Group were claiming it. I found a nice lawyer guy at Warners, very apologetic, promised to get it sorted, but all these months later it isn’t. That is because Myspace are not equipped to deal with the notion that anyone other than a major can claim a copyright. Warner’s were one of the lead petitioners in the attempt to put those three stoner lads in Sweden in prison recently, remember.

Ohne auch nur einen müden Cent dieses Profits an den Künstler weiterzugeben! Sie schreibt außerdem:

Attempting to make them cease and desist would use up the rest of my life. Because this is what they do and what they’ve always done. And it’s not just majors.

You know it’s bad when an Indie Artist can’t stream is own song on Myspace due to the facts that “MySpace are not equipped to deal with the notion that anyone other than a major [label] can claim a copyright,”

“I am Edwyn Colllins manager. Let me tell you a story. At the beginning of this year I noticed that Edwyn’s myspace had gone bit wonky and I tried to upload the tracks back on to the music player. His most famous track, which he owns the copyright in, as he does for most of the music he’s recorded in his life (preferring to go it alone than have his music trapped “in perpetuity” to use the contract language of the major record company) is called A Girl Like You. It’s quite famous. Lo and behold, it would not upload, I was told Edwyn was attempting to breach a copyright and he was sent to the Orwellian myspace copyright re-education page. Quite chilling, actually. I naturally blew my stack and wrote to myspace on his behalf demanding to know who the hell was claiming copyright of Edwyn’s track? Which, incidentally, he always made freely available for download on myspace, something which amazed his followers. Eventually, after HUGE difficulty, I was told Warner Music Group were claiming it. I found a nice lawyer guy at Warners, very apologetic, promised to get it sorted, but all these months later it isn’t. That is because Myspace are not equipped to deal with the notion that anyone other than a major can claim a copyright. Warner’s were one of the lead petitioners in the attempt to put those three stoner lads in Sweden in prison recently, remember. A Girl Like You is available FOR SALE all over the internet. Not by Edwyn, by all sorts of respectable major labels whose licence to sell it ran out years ago and who do not account to him. Attempting to make them cease and desist would use up the rest of my life. Because this is what they do and what they’ve always done. And it’s not just majors. If I had a fiver for all the dodgy indie labels we’ve been involved with I’d have £35 or thereabouts. (Exceptions: Heavenly and Domino). Andrew Loog Oldham said that getting ripped off (by the industry) was your entrance fee to the music business of the sixties, so get over it. He’s right and things have not changed. We are very over it, but nonetheless aware of who the biggest bootleggers around are. It’s not the filesharers. Personally, we’ve always loved bootlegs. Even when Edwyn was really skint at the fag end of the eighties, I remember being in Camden market and seeing some tapes of a couple of his shows on sale. I tried to buy them but the stallholder somehow knew who I was and said “free to the management.” I failed to see how that guy selling tapes of Edwyn or even U2 or anybody on the list of signatories above could harm their career. This is really sick cause Collins owns the copyright to his own music, and all licensing deals for the track have expired!

and the story gets better “Warner Music were claiming the song as their own and MySpace bought into it without even checking.”

I quote from the torrent freak article ” Several big shot labels are still selling Collins’ track today even though their license to do so expired several years ago. This basically means that the labels are pirating his music, and making profit from these activities.”

Ending a nine-month standoff, YouTube said on Tuesday that it had reached an agreement with the Warner Music Group that would return the label’s music videos to the video Web site.

Warner Music had demanded that its videos be removed last December after licensing talks stalled with YouTube, a unit of Google. The deal means YouTube has agreements in place with the country’s four major record labels and four major publishers.

As it did in its previous deal, YouTube will share advertising revenue with Warner. But the terms of the new deal are believed to be more advantageous for the music label, although the companies refused to comment on the terms or the details of the negotiations.

Chris Maxcy, the head of music partnerships at YouTube, said in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday that the new deal “represents many months of hard work between both companies.” YouTube’s sheer size — it is responsible for 40 percent of all online video views, according to ComScore — makes it a destination for music video viewing, but Warner and others want that viewing to happen on their own terms. Joining a growing number of other media companies, Warner is choosing to control the advertising sales for its videos on YouTube.

For YouTube, agreements with music companies are important as it tries to secure revenue from professional video streams.

YouTube said it expected the Warner Music channels to be back online by the end of the year.
