has rallied 62 percent from a 12-year low in March as the government lent, spent or guaranteed $11.6 trillion to combat the worst U.S. recession since the 1930s. The rebound left the benchmark index trading at about 20.6 times the reported Earnings of its companies, the highest since 2004.

Earnings Season

Profit has topped estimates at 76 percent of the S&P 500 companies that have posted third-quarter results, including Google Inc.,

JPMorgan Chase & Co.

and DuPont Co. More than 130 S&P 500 companies are reporting this week.

Yahoo rose 4.5 percent to $17.95. Third-quarter

excluding some expenses was 15 cents a share, beating the average prediction of 13 cents by analysts in a Bloomberg survey. Sales, excluding fees passed on to partner sites, were $1.13 billion, exceeding projections.

SanDisk Corp.

Apple Inc., maker of the iPhone mobile phone, iPod music players and MacIntosh computers, rose 3.1 percent to a record $204.91 and contributed most to the S&P 500’s advance.

Morgan Stanley Jumps

Morgan Stanley rallied 6.5 percent to $34.63. The sixth- largest U.S. bank by assets reported its first profit in a year, surpassing analysts’ estimates on higher investment-banking fees. Third-quarter Earnings were $757 million, or 38 cents a share. The average estimate of 21 analysts was for profit of 30 cents a share.

U.S. Bancorp climbed 6.7 percent to $25.38. The Minneapolis-based lender that has expanded during the financial crisis said third-quarter profit rose 4.7 percent on higher net interest margins and fees from mortgage banking and transactions at automated teller machines.

SLM Corp. soared 19 percent to $10.61 for the biggest advance in the S&P 500. The largest U.S. student loan company reported its first profit in more than a year.

Treasury Secretary

Timothy Geithner

said the bank capital- purchase program in the $700 billion bailout will be allowed to expire later this year because parts of the economy and markets are stabilizing, Reuters reported, citing an interview.

“We are now at the point where we can begin to wind down the programs that really defined TARP in its initial stages,” Reuters quoted Geithner as saying in the interview today, referring to the Troubled Asset Relief Program.

Boeing Slumps

Boeing Co., the second-largest maker of commercial aircraft, fell 1.1 percent to $51.34 after Booking $3.5 billion in charges for the delayed 787 Dreamliner and 747-8 jumbo jet programs. Its largest-ever net loss of $1.56 billion, or $2.23 a share, exceeded the $2.10-a-share average estimate of 18 analysts in a survey.

Per-share Earnings for the 97 companies in the S&P 500 that released third-quarter results since Oct. 7 were down 11 percent from the year-earlier period. Per-share profit fell in each of the past eight quarters, a record streak of declines that analysts expect to end in the current quarter.

The Dollar Index, which gauges the U.S. currency against a basket of six trading partners, Slumped 0.5 percent to a 14- month low. The pound and the New Zealand dollar rose after central bankers signaled interest rates may increase. The U.K. currency climbed 1.4 percent against the dollar and the New Zealand dollar strengthened 0.6 percent.

Bank of England Governor

Mervyn King

started preparing Britons for higher interest rates, writing in the Herald newspaper of Scotland that “it would be wise to take account” of the prospect of rising borrowing costs. Reserve Bank of New Zealand Governor Alan Bollard said a strengthening currency isn’t an obstacle to raising rates. Australia last week became the first Group of 20 nation to lift its benchmark rate since the start of the global financial crisis.

The Fed will issue its Beige Book report on regional economies, which policy makers will use to gauge the state of the housing market and the overall economy when they meet in the first week of November, at 2 p.m. in Washington today.

Don’t you just hate it when you’re trying to open a trash bag, and it just won’t open?  Well, here’s a simple solution that never fails.  Wash your hands.

The reason it becomes hard to open the trash bag is that during the course of the day, oil from the fingers builds up.  The oil is especially slippery when it rubs against the plastic.  When you wash your hands, it removes the oil from your skin, making it tacky enough to open the bag without slipping.

This has worked with all the trash bags I’ve tested,   even the hard to open bags.

washlink notes: via a link I saw the title below  and assume it was a humerous story from the US or Europe…Reading the first line  “Do landlords know that it is an offence not to provide toilet facilities…”  I’m thinking what’s the catch… som badly placed joke  but  I  read on….  I caught on rather quickly that sadly there was no clever catch to it, like to sell  toilet paper etc.  This is  just another part of the world …stupid me.  But  then the outrage:  something so improbable for for me in Massachusetts :”Do landlords know that it is an offence not to provide toilet facilities…” that I anticipate a humorous story!!

Well, a lot of them do not know and that is why they continue to put up houses without toilet facilities and expect their tenants to use the public toilets.

So the reminder of the Director of Environmental Health and Sanitation, Mr Demedeme Naa Lenason, to landlords that it is an offence not to provide toilet facilities in their houses or to convert their toilets and bathrooms into living rooms is timely.

Quoting from the 2000 Population and Housing Census, he said more than 20 per cent of Ghanaians did not have any form of latrines and therefore resorted to open defecation.

Mr Lenason said the 2000 census revealed that 31.45 per cent households in Ghana used public latrines as compared to 8.5 per cent using water closet; 22 per cent used pit latrine, 6.9 per cent used KVIP, four per cent used bucket or pan latrine and 6.9 per cent attend to nature’s call in other people’s houses.

He said the Ministry’s Environmental Sanitation Policy of 1999 was unequivocal on households and public toilets and the policy states that at least 90 per cent of the population should have access to acceptable domestic toilet, while the remaining 10 per cent should have access to hygienic public toilets.

As we observe World Toilet Day on November 19, a day to celebrate the humble, yet vitally important toilet and to raise awareness of the global sanitation crisis, we need to learn from other countries, such as the United Kingdom, how toilets became a vital part of any building.

As far back as in 1891, there were legislations for the construction of water closets in houses by the British under the London Householder’s chart.

There were nuisances, which could be dealt with summarily under the Public Health (London) Act 189.

There were strict regulations regarding erected or re-built houses, with the provision of proper water closets. Penalty was 20 pounds then.

Additionally, the British found it necessary to support this Law having had very bad experiences in waste management and becoming sufferers of epidemics such as typhoid and cholera in the 1840s.

There is no way a building can be erected in the UK now without the provision of at least a toilet.

But in Ghana people still build houses without making provision for toilet facilities.

Dr John Snow’s work in tracing the source of a cholera outbreak in Soho, England, in 1954, is described now as “a major event in the history of public health and can be regarded as the founding event of the science of Epidemiology”.

The discovery of what causes cholera was followed by the crisis, which was termed, “The Great Stink or the Big Stink.” In the summer of 1858, the smell of untreated sewage almost overwhelmed people in Central London.

Within 18 days a bill was passed and the task of building the city’s sewers began and those sewers still serve London.

Sadly, there are still outbreaks of cholera in Ghana almost every year, but no serious focus has been given to building hygienic toilets across the country to check this outbreak.

The move is also aimed at encouraging farmers to use human waste as a fertiliser to improve agricultural productivity. Joss Whedon’s Firefly was probably the best sci-fi television show ever. To be cancelled after half a season. By Fox (those bastards). It might have proved to be the best sci-fi show ever, period, if it’d been picked up by another network but it wasn’t. All we got was 14 episodes and a movie (Serenity). Fans of the show were heartbroken.

I wasn’t one of the heartbroken. I was part of the problem. I never watched Firefly when it was on the air because it was a huge nerd hurdle for me. Not because it was sci-fi but because I had no idea it was sci-fi. I heard the words “Joss Whedon” and “Firefly” and assumed it was another Buffy spin-off like Angel, but maybe about Willow or some other wiccan lesbians. Though I loved Buffy, I didn’t care for Angel, so I never checked out Firefly. And not many other people did either.

Then, after it was cancelled, I heard it was really good. One of the best TV shows ever. My ears pricked up. Then I heard it was “space cowboys” and my ears pricked back down. Cowboys are a huge hurdle for me. I like the odd western (usually starting a young Clint Eastwood) but generally I don’t care for the genre. It’s why it took me so long to watch the excellent Deadwood. Perhaps it’s because I don’t like modern-day cowboy culture and thereby associate ”westerns” with redneck douchebags. And I don’t care for the music. Such as the Firefly theme:

Then it was explained to me that the show isn’t so much about space cowboys as space outlaws and once again my ears were pricked. So a couple of years ago, several years after it was cancelled, I finally sat down to tackle Firefly.

I wasn’t disappointed. True, I wasn’t hooked from the first episode, but by the third I couldn’t stop watching if I tried. The show’s strength is that it’s blessed with probably the best ensemble cast ever assembled. Where other classic ensembles (TNG, Buffy) took a good three or four seasons to hit their stride, the cast of Firefly hit the ground running. The chemistry couldn’t have been improved in a laboratory. Check out the gag reel at the bottom of this post. It’s hard to believe these people were practically strangers.

Though there is certainly an outlaw/western feel to the show, it’s all the aspects of westerns I enjoy. They’re more dust-bowl pirates than cowboys. In a way it’s like Pirates of the Caribbean set on the Millenium Falcon instead of the Black Pearl. If it’d been sold to me that way, I’d have been watching from day one.

Instead the show was pitched as “nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things.” Um. Okay. That’s cool and all, but it’s sounds like Waiting for Godot staged on Discovery One. This show isn’t that at all. Perhaps the exact opposite. It’s an adventure-comedy of the highest grade. And well worth the hurdle.

I literally wait until we have no plates or silverware before I do the dishes. I really hate to do it. And when I do do them- I have to have rubber gloves. Just eww. Well, I found a few suggestions to help make doing dishes more fun! (Well, most of them require a partner or such…which works as long as you don’t have a husband allergic to dish soap. Yeah.)

• Turn on music! I like to have The Classic Crime or Deas Vail playing.

• Talk. Seriously- a conversation with someone else takes your mind off of the dishes & it seems to go faster!

• Take turns. Wash one sinkfull while someone else dries. Then switch.

• Have a reward. No dessert til the dishes are done. Or perhaps a piece of chocolate for each sinkfull!

• Set a timer. As the Flylady says “You can do anything for 15 minutes.”

Thanks so much for posting your technique, I am currently working on my first painting and have been doing exactly what you’ve done here. i think i did do something wrong though, a friend of mine said to do a light wash over the entire piece ,but I think it just confused me. Anyhow , why do you not put more detail in the underpainting, are you modeling further with your glazes?

I’m not sure what the light wash is for, either.  I’m assuming you’re using acrylic paints, which dry to a hard finish and so allow you to paint a wash on top of them.  I use gouache, and a wash would scrub off whatever was painted underneath.  So, I start my paintings with washes and build up to opaque brushstrokes. A wash is paint made transparent by adding water.  A glaze is paint made transparent by adding a medium—for acrylic, glazing medium; for oil paint, linseed oil and varnish—or glazing medium.

I do an underpainting to block in and organize big areas of light and dark.  I long ago found out it’s too complicated for me to figure out light and dark and color all at the same time.  There’s no point in me putting lots of detail in the underpainting, because I’m only going to paint the same details on top with opaque paint.  In fact, to discourage myself from getting into details while underpainting, I use an oversized brush.

It is very likely that most of us have taken a mint when walking out of a restaurant. A lot of times these mints are not wrapped up; a spoon was probably there so that people don’t touch unwrapped mints with their dirty hands. I don’t know about you, but I just grab one with my hands anyways. I actually got reprimanded at Whole Foods the other day because I took a nut out of the nut container with my bare hands. So why am I talking about this?

Well, as coined by Rory on a Gilmore Girls episode, these mints are “urine mints.” He stated that urine mints occur “when people go to the bathroom and they don’t wash their hands and they come out and take a mint.” Does this make any of us cringe, thinking that we may be consuming even a “poopie mint?” That grosses me out.

According to Snopes.com, there is no legislation related to the sanitary measures taken on mints in restaurants. There has been talk of legislation though.

Also, after reading an article on Helium.com, I have adopted some of the necessary precautions in order to avoid taking contaminated mints. The five most useful pointers were:

-Use your eyes!! Look around, is the restroom dirty, is the restaurant in good condition? Ask these questions.

-Wash your hands in order to contribute to the overly sanitary atmosphere of the restaurant.

-Check for signs in the restrooms stating when it was last cleaned.

-Are there handtowels or paper towels? A restroom with hand towels is definitely less sanitary than a bathroom with paper towels.

-DON’T EAT THE MINTS! Bring your own, that you know are clean!

Print Club London are going to be weilding the pencils of Yuletide in December.  Print Club is an East London based screenprinting studio that came to my attention because of the great summer show they do.  Lots of previous Heavy Pencil artists have been involved and made beautiful prints with them so it was only a matter of time.  Rose stallard is the co-founder and she’ll be bringing, Chrissie Abott, Hand Wash Studio, and Danny Sangra along.

“Het pand op de Vismarkt werd ons gratis ter beschikking gesteld door de heer en mevrouw Souvereyns. Wij hebben dit helemaal terug in orde gebracht door de muren een laagje verf te geven. Op koopzondagen 13 en 20 december is de Unicefwinkel ook geopend. Zelfs op andere zondagvoormiddagen willen de organisatoren de shop open doen voor de misgangers in de kathedraal.

People from the north of England were up to three times more likely to have hands contaminated with pooh than southerners a study has found.

The most likely explanation is that fewer northerners are washing their hands with soap after answering the call of nature, researchers said.

• In total, almost 30 per cent of people tested were carrying ‘faecal’ bacteria.

People in Newcastle were up to three times more likely to have the bugs on their hands than those in London.

The proportion of people found to have contaminated hands was

• 13 per cent in London;
• 23 per cent in Cardiff;
• 24 per cent in Birmingham;
• 34 per cent in Liverpool; and
• 44 per cent in Newcastle.

For just men:

• 6 per cent in London;
• 15 per cent in Cardiff;
• 21 per cent in Birmingham;
• 36 per cent in Liverpool; and
• 53 per cent in Newcastle.

For just women:

• 21 per cent in London;
• 29 per cent in Cardiff;
• 26 per cent in Birmingham;
• 31 per cent in Liverpool; and
• 30 per cent in Newcastle.

Women in London were around three times more likely than men to have faecal bacteria on their hands.

Ms.Val Curtis PhD, from ‘The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine‘ who led the study, said:

‘We were flabbergasted by the finding that so many people had faecal bugs on their hands.

‘The figures were far higher than we had anticipated, and suggest that there is a real problem with people washing their hands in the UK.

‘If any of these people had been suffering from diarrhoea disease, the potential for it to be passed around would be greatly increased by their failure to wash their hands after going to the toilet.’

Dr Curtis’s team took random swabs from the hands of 409 commuters waiting at bus stops near London Euston, Birmingham New Street, Cardiff Central, Liverpool Lime Street and Newcastle Central stations on weekday mornings.

When they were analysed, 113 of the samples were found to contain bacteria from faeces.
