The Read and Succeed Book Exchange Program was started by the WCSD Volunteer Services Department to provide the opportunity for area children to exchange books at numerous sites across Washoe County. The WCSD has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows, Reno and Sparks recreation departments and the Washoe County Library District among others. Children are given a free book to start the school year and then are encouraged to exchange it at one of the exchange sites. Some sites like the libraries are open sites while others are member only. During the coming two years the WCSD will be distributing nearly 200,000 books to area youths. It just makes sense to provide an outlet to keep them circulating in the community. In addition to the book exchange program the WCSD Volunteer Services Department also has an activity book program where local hospitals and charities receive hundreds of free activity books. How you can help…. Thanks to Grassroots Books the Volunteer Services is able to purchase books at an incredible special volume price that may not last. Therefore, we are asking for donations to continue our programs in future years. A donation of only $250.00 buys nearly 4000 books for Washoe School District students and other area children.

In addition, for a cost of $200, a business may receive 2,000 already sorted and prepared books to distribute as promotions or to promote literacy with their customers or employees. We hope you consider this worthwhile cause.

Although I usually read to the 4 year olds, this week I had the 5 year olds. They were much more attentive, eager to listen, to write letters and to answer questions about “what if”. I still feel a draw to the 4 year olds as there are soooo many in the class and a bigger need for one on one. Enjoyed!!

First off, I must say most of the people I know think I am totally NUTS when I tell them I am a volunteer teacher’s helper in a kindergarten class for 6 hours each week. BUT, I tell them this is something I never had time to do while I was pursuing a career as a legal secretary/assistant AND I am so thoroughly enjoying my Tues./Thurs. a.m. classes. The teacher is so appreciative of any and all help I can give, but the biggest reward is watching the children throughout the year as their level of knowledge grows. It is so amazing to me. I attended last year’s graduation ceremony and I teared up – feeling as if all the children graduating were actually my own. Also throughout the summer I’d run into some of the students in the store and they would be so happy to see me – it makes your heart soar! So if you are a retired senior and want to get out of the house and do something helpful and useful, PLEASE think about helping at your neighborhood school. They need volunteers and it doesn’t have to be a kindergarten class. You can pick the age/grade level you would like or choose to work in the lunch room or as a crossing guard or a number of other volunteer positions. If you want to “give back” to your community and gain so much for yourself – remember our children are our future and the school district needs volunteers.

I’m so happy I volunteered for this event because it exposed me to the commitment, respect and yes love the Wooster High School administrative, teaching, and support staff for the students and families. I was with a great team, which included The Dean of Students, Mr. Gifford, the Lead Counselor, Erin, and a bilingual support staff, Annine. After our training, we spent a few minutes introducing ourselves and discussing the students we would be visiting. I loved the way the Wooster staff discussed the students and families. They always stressed their strengths and then gaps and the resources that were available to fill those gaps. We drove together and spent a lot of time laughing just about silly things. The laughter increased our comfort with one another. When we got to our first home, we walked up, rang the bell but no one answered. We noticed there was a car and truck parked in the driveway. We decided to leave a note that we had been there. Mr. Gifford took charge of that. When we got back in the car, we decided to call each family before going up to the front door. This turned out to be a good idea. On our second visit, the student answered the phone and told us we could come ahead. It was a great family. The student was so close to having what he needed to graduate. The father and mother expressed great hope in seeing their son graduate from high school and were willing to do whatever they could to help their student achieve this major milestone. When we arrived at the next home on our list, we called but the number was reported as disconnected. We still took the time to knock on the door but there was no answer. We then headed to our fourth and final home. There we met with the father, who told us the daughter was visiting friends in Fernley. This student too was almost to the finish line. The father told us she planned to go into the military. The lead counselor shared some resources to help him help his daughter get to the finish line. The father also shared he was having some problems with his teenage son. The lead counselor pointed the father in the direction of some great resources offered for adolescents struggling with personal issues.

When we returned to the school site, we spent a few minutes debriefing and said our goodbyes. We all agreed it was a great experience connecting with students and families in their homes.

Before I left the school site, I had a chance to talk with the principal, who is a powerhouse of energy, enthusiasm, and dedication. I thought to myself, she is the embodiment of everything that is good about public education. I shared with her that I was so impressed by the quality of her staff, by their commitment to making sure every student had an opportunity to complete high school graduation. I also shared that I thought home visits to high-risk should be done monthly to keep the student motivated and families engaged.

If I could do a dream project, it would be to bring together families of high risk students, and school and community resources for hour emancipation workshop where we show parents some strategies for emancipating their students in healthy ways, e.g. achievable and realistic goal setting, followed by actions that will lead to the desired goal. I’d use those four hours to help the student and their family set goals for the year as the first benchmarks toward their long-term goals. I would meet with the parents to hear what their concerns in helping their student reach their academic goals. I would have the parent and student meet together to bring together their respective emancipation plans. I’d break bread with the students and families. Then I would send them on their way with a basket of resources.

Throughout the week, WCSD Volunteer Services, VISTA Team, made the calls and then participated in visiting high school students on saturday.

Eric Beye, Director of Intervention Services, spearheaded the organization of the campaign and call center, with Volunteer Services Coordinator, Lisa Marie Lightfoot, VISTA’s, Richard Birmingham, Maureen Koski, Jennifer Bullock, Jamie Wright, Media Wright, Paulette Bridges, Olivia Callison, Raquel Gutierrez and Bella Rojas-Ziech. Two additional community Spanish speakers provided support, Alfred Berman and Mike Lount.
My visit experience was so moving that I felt tears welling in my eyes when I listened to one father confirm that his son had gotten off track but he would do everything to see that he graduated. He and his wife felt gratified that the school cared enough to make this effort.

Our team translator, Alejandra Reyes, Wooster High Career Center, provided a comfortable transition for Spanish-speaking members of the family. The father also stated that no one in the California system had ever shown this kind of support. This was a cohesive effort, I felt we were a team, a part of the family!

During our visits, Sue Denning, Assistant Principal at Wooster, was on target with information, anticipating the direction the student needed in order to reach that goal. She readily met each question and suggested the next steps, “PLATO on Saturday mornings, an extended study program if needed, a later graduation date in August instead of June.” I also had the pleasure of meeting Janeen Kelly, WCSD Director of ELL/WL English Language Learner Department.

We were able to review the proficiency levels of each student prior to meeting the family, two of the students were nearly at level for graduation but had failed to turn in work or complete assignments. Since we had been assigned four families to visit, we reviewed each in turn prior to arrival: one student had an incorrect address (to be located later). Another, the mother welcomed us, but did not know about our visit and her daughter was not at home, we left materials for her to read (in Spanish) another appointment date will be set.

One family was so welcoming that we wanted to accept their invitation to stay and celebrate the grandfather’s birthday. The garden was beautiful, tables decorated, music and delicious aromas of food being prepared, it was a temptation hard to leave. As we sat outside in the garden we listened to what the student wanted and how he had already contacted everyone in the school to turn his grades around and get the credits he needed. His family was very supportive and understood he cannot anticipate college, even in Mexico, without higher academic achievement.

This was a beneficial and positive effort, I believe bonds were made and trust established. I would do it again.

Do you remember the first time you served AFTER graduating from AmeriCorps? For me, 9/11 Day is a solemn reminder of my first service as an AmeriCorps Alum – it was at Ground Zero, just one week after the disaster in 2001.

My friend and fellow NCCC Alum, Olive Eckstein, was the reason I went to NYC to serve, but the reason I was ABLE to serve, was due to the skills and certifications I had acquired through AmeriCorps. Just steps from the chaos and destruction of Ground Zero, Olive and I came equipped with a number of Red Cross disaster relief certifications and we were quickly plugged into the operations of a 24 hour respite shelter for first responders.

Each of you possesses unique and valuable talents and skills which you acquired and developed in service through AmeriCorps. This month’s ONE THING: Volunteer. You can do that through joining your local Alums Chapter and serve regularly with Alums like yourself. These centers help people find and engage in volunteer opportunities in their local communities. No matter how big or small your next service project is, I encourage you to continue to find ways to serve in your city.

Our pledge of a Lifetime of Service knows no beginning or end, so whether you’ve just finished your AmeriCorps year or you were a graduate from Class One, there’s no better time than right now to find a new way to serve your community.

On Tuesday September 4, 2012, at Old Town Mall, Reno, NV, Washoe County School District, Volunteer Services VISTA’s, Jennifer Bullock and Richard Birmingham, were surprised and excited by the wonderful 2000+ senior turnout. The event at Old Town Mall represented a wide margin of interests and resource information for seniors of every rank.

The day commenced with an ideal table, by the front door, thanks to Chris and Connie McMullen of Senior Spectrum Newspaper. The purpose of both VISTA’s was to recruit tutors for assistance in the classrooms and to provide information about the opportunities to serve, as well as other jobs available on a volunteer basis.

Forty two highly talented, gracious seniors signed on to perform one task or another. Two, were interested in becoming VISTA’s, which could comprise of being a summer volunteer and/or tutoring in the year-round schools.

Matt Johnson and Craig Warner, both AmeriCorps VISTA lead personnel, attended the event and stopped by to chat with Richard and Jennifer. They have been participants in oversight of Senior Corps volunteers and programs as well.

Our next steps are to follow through with volunteer trainings for Read and Succeed and Math Path Programs in order to facilitate the extra attention some children need to be at grade level achievement.

All in all, this was a great day!

This summer vacation I volunteer tutored, twice a week, an elementary student going into second grade who needed reading help. I spoke to the parents today and they were very appreciative and said their son is doing well starting second grade.

Tutors do make a difference, thank you to Mr. Richard Birmingham!

If you would like to volunteer tutor, or just learn how to tutor your own child, we have training programs coming up. Please contact us:

On August 18, 2012, WCSD Volunteer Services Coordinator, Lisa Marie Lightfoot and VISTA’s, Jennifer Bullock and Richard Birmingham participated in a busy, well planned event for Back To School. Immunizations were the chief draw, but we were able to meet and greet a couple of hundred parents and students while they waited in line.

Jennifer and Richard handed out activity books too many of the children passing through or waiting in line. It was a busy morning and a hot afternoon, but seemed like a good venue for getting started for school.

A big thanks to Lori Heeren, VP/General Manager of Reno Media Group and “Frank” who provided a dolly for wheeling boxes in and out from the parking lot!

We hope to attend another Legend’s Back to School Affair next year-kids and parents seemed to enjoy the “fashion” show and entertainment.

For us, it was a good day to recruit potential tutors and meet caring parents who were focused on preparing their children for the big day
