Summary

Apparently, only 28% of the 34m Ugandans have access to hand washing facilities after toilet, meaning most Ugandans are susceptible to water-borne diseases. On average, a minimum of 30 minutes is spent in trekking two kilometers to the nearest water source for most of students and elderly in rural Uganda. The 15 tanks for public rural schools and 5 tanks for most needy elderly people will give them access to safe and clean water for drinking, washing hands after toilet and domestic use.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

While implementing the second phase of our project we discovered that most of the elderly in rural communities have no access to water nor do they have energy to fetch from the spring wells which are usually in more than a KM distance. Further, though we had targeted only primary schools, we found out that most of the rural schools lacked access to safe and clean water for washing hands after toilet, drinking

How will this project solve this problem?

In the third phase, we target to construct 20 more tanks where we shall have 15 constructed at already identified 15 community rural schools in Mukono District both primary and secondary one, then 5 tanks for the most needy and helpless elderly people. The 15 tanks in selected schools will give access to clean and safe water for drinking and washing hands after toilet thus reducing diseases in target rural schools. The 5 tanks will help the most needy elderly people to have access to water.

Potential Long Term Impact

UN Resolution 64/292 asserts that safe and clean drinking water is a human right essential to the full enjoyment of life and all other human rights. This project helps students and the elderly to attain this fundamental right, break out of their life of poverty & achieve better health. Washing hands after toilet is so fundamental to prevent spreading disease such as cholera, Diarrhea, etc among pupils and students in rural schools. Access to safe and clean drinking water is equally important.

Project Message

Ever since a tank got installed at our school, we have access to clean and safe water for washing hands after toilet and drinking. We mostly fetch water from the tank instead of 2km spring well

It is important to store water so that there is adequate supply of water when there is scarcity. Water tanks help in the storage of water. The water tanks can be made of a number of materials which include plastic, steel and fiber. However it must be made sure that the water tanks are protected against any kind of rust or corrosion otherwise it may have a negative impact on the water which it is storing. Water tanks are used in households, factories and even on agricultural lands. Fiberglass tanks are mainly devoid of corrosion rust. They are mainly used for household purposes. They help in storing water which is used for various household works. Fiberglass tanks are easy to use and can store large gallons of water.

Rain water collection tanks help in storing the water and is mainly used on agricultural fields. Sometimes agriculture becomes difficult due to shortage of rainfall and rainwater tanks help in providing water at that time. It is one of the best ways to irrigate the farmlands and ensure that there is ample supply of water. The rainwater tanks are mainly constructed in the deserts where there is scarcity of water. These tanks are the life saviors especially to the farmers who are into farming. The rain water tanks are also used to grow various crops. They are usually very big in size and can store large gallons of water at one go. The rainwater tanks are mainly filled during the rainy season and then used throughout the year. They are usually open tanks so that the rain water can be easily filled.

Plastic tanks are usually used in houses and factories. They can be both open ended or closed ended depending on the use. They do not require any kind of maintenance because they are not subjected to corrosion and rust. They are also cheaper than stainless steel and can be used for longer duration of time. The plastic tanks can be used for both normal household purposes as well as chemical purposes in the factories. The plastic tanks used for household purposes are mainly constructed at the terrace and is used to supply water in all the pipes of the house. They can be filled with rain water or underground water with the help of motors and the water can be stored for future use. The plastic tanks at homes are not that big in size and can suffice a small household. However the plastic tanks which are used in the factories are pretty big and are mainly used to carry out the production process. They are mainly used to store the chemical water. They may be vertical as well as horizontal in shape.

Plastic tanks

Water tanks act as reservoirs and help in keeping water in the time of the scarcity. Water tanks can be made with a number of materials. There may be plastic tanks for keeping water. Plastic tanks are usually kept on top of the terrace and are mainly useful for storing water at houses. The water tanks can be filled with rain water and these tanks are mainly useful when there is no water in the house. At the time of scarcity of water these tanks are particularly useful and can be suitable for all households. The plastic tanks are not that big in size and are therefore not suitable for factories or big houses. However it is ideal for small houses. Plastic tanks can be used as both portable water tanks and chemical tanks as well. The big plastic tanks can be used in factories and they can be vertical or horizontal. The plastic tanks can be both closed and opened on the top depending on the type of tank required. The plastic tanks do not need regular maintenance because they are made of stainless steel and are usually protected against any kind of rust.

Rainwater tanks

Water tanks are used for storing water both in households as well as in the factories. The main use of water tanks is to store water so that it can be used in case of shortage of water. Rainwater tanks are the ones which are used to store rain water. They are mainly constructed in the deserts where there is shortage of water. The main function of the rainwater tanks is to store water for agricultural purpose. The rain water tanks help in harvesting. They also help in irrigation of lands. They are mainly constructed in the farmlands and are savior at the time when there is no rainfall. They act as a boon to the farmers by supplying water at the right time. They are gigantic in size and can store a lot of rain water. Water tanks can be used for multiple purposes. They can be used to water farmland; they can be used to store water for household purposes.

Fiberglass tanks

There are also various other types of tanks like the food manufacturing tanks which help to keep way corrosion. Sometimes factories need to have large water tanks to store water and carry out the production. Fiberglass tanks can also be used to store water. They are corrosion resistant and also can resist rust as they are not made of steel. The fiberglass tanks are mainly used for household purposes to store water. Tanks are sometimes life saviors. They provide water at the right time and help to carry out work smoothly and efficiently.

Chapter 1: Thinking About Water
To achieve your design goals for a water system, it is helpful to know what your goals are. The first order of business is to consider:
Why Store Water?
Nearly all water systems include some form of storage, most commonly a tank. Storage can be used to:
cover peaks in demand smooth out variations in supply provide water security in case of supply interruptions or disaster save your home from fire meet legal requirements improve water quality provide thermal storage and freeze protection enable a smaller pipe to serve for a distant source
We’re going to consider each of these reasons to store water, then look at design principles to help you frame the goals for your project.
Cover Peaks in Demand
The most common function of water storage is to cover short-term use flows that are greater than the flow of the water source. For example, a tiny, one gallon-per-minute spring supplies 1440 gallons a day. This is several times more than most homes use in a day. However, almost every fixture in the home consumes water at a faster rate than 1 gpm while it is turned on. Even a low-flow shower head uses about 1.5 gpm.
By using water stored in a tank, you can supply water to the shower faster than it is flowing from the spring. On completing the shower, the water will be coming in faster than it is going out, and the tank level will rise back up.
If you had a 10,000 gal tank, you could run a 100 gpm fire hose—creating the kind of blast used to bowl over hostile crowds—on the stored water from this tiny spring, for an hour and a half! Hopefully the fire would be out by then, as the tank would take several days to refill.
Smooth Out Variations in Supply
In some circumstances, your storage needs will be affected by variations in the water supply. For instance, if the supply is rainwater, you will need enough storage to make it through the intervals between rainfalls. A six-month, rainless dry season requires a heck of a lot more storage than the most common kind of variable supply—a well pump that cycles on and off.
If you have a well that taps stored groundwater, a tank will save wear and tear on your pump, because the pump won’t have to switch on and off every time you open a tap.
Provide Water Security in Case of Supply Interruptions or Disaster
In many places, the water supply chain from source to tap is long and made of many delicate links. Water Storage describes how to store water for home, farm, and small communities. It will help you design storage for just about any use, including fire safety and emergency, in just about any context—urban, rural, or village.
This book includes:
•General principles to help you design, construct, and use any water system
•A look at common mistakes and how to avoid them
•How the different kinds of storage can serve you—tanks, groundwater, and ponds
•How to determine the optimum amount of storage for your needs
•How to determine the best shape and material for your storage
•How to manage aquifers sustainably for inexpensive storage of water in the ground
•Plumbing details for inlets, outlets, drains, overflows, access, etc. storage accessories and gadgets such as automatic shut-off valves, remote •Level indicators, ozonators, and filters
•How to build your own high-quality tank from ferrocement
•Original design innovations—published here for the first time—to improve the quality of stored water, increase water security, make maintenance easier, and reduce environmental impacts
•Real-life examples of storage designs for a wide range of contexts
This book offers underlying design principles as well as design specifics. If you run into a situation not specifically covered, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to use these general principles to figure it out yourself.
Installed water storage typically costs fifty cents to three dollars or more a gallon ($60-200/m3). If you’ve got this book in your hands, you’re probably on the verge of making decisions about hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of storage. On an average water system, this book could pay for itself a hundred times over in savings on construction and maintenance.
Most of the information otherwise available on water storage comes from vendors. Oasis Design doesn’t sell water storage hardware, so you don’t have to worry about being steered towards stuff you don’t need. Rather, we make our living by providing information to help people have a higher quality of life with lower impact.
If a cow steps on the supply line, a pump breaks, a wire works loose, the electricity goes out, the city misplaces your check, or there is a natural disaster, your water flow could stop. By locating your storage as few chain links away as possible from your use point, a large measure of security is added…
———– Short on Water By 2025 at least 3.5 billion people—about half the world’s population—will live in areas without enough water for agriculture, industry, and human needs… Worldwide, water quality conditions appear to have degraded in almost all regions with intensive agriculture and in large urban and industrial areas. —World Resources Institute, October 2000 ———–

According to recent news, here in the UK we’ve just had the second wettest year on record. Seems a long time since those water bans were put in place earlier in 2012, doesn’t it?

Rusty barbeques and sodden vegetable patches all over Britain attest what a lousy summer we enjoyed, and the rainfall we endured was exceptionally heavy and prolonged. Now, climate experts tell us that we should expect this type of pattern to continue into the future. Woop.

Lovely weather for ducks (and swans). Not so great for plants and turf though.

Is this the end for the UK irrigation industry? Are the 100 plus (wild guess there) UK irrigation companies ready to shut the doors and move to warmer climes? I think not. I believe that most will see the climate situation as an opportunity for increased business in challenging times. Adapt and survive, as they say.

While we may see heavier, more frequent heavy downpours of rain throughout summer and winter periods, we will still get warm summers when golf courses, sports fields, plants and lawns require water at specific times during dry periods.

Cancelled games, postponed matches. 2012 rainfall played havoc with sports pitches.

You could argue that a heavy deluge of rain (where most of the water runs off the land into ditches and rivers) is not effective at irrigating the ground, as the soil just can’t physically accept the water quick enough for it to do any good. So, we could therefore assume that more irrigation is required…maybe a little simplistic, but I suspect it contains more than a shred of truth.

Whether we get these high volumes of rainfall or not, water is one of the planet’s most valuable commodities, as the drought situation earlier in 2012 testified. It therefore suggests that if we can store rapid-falling rain for use during a drought, or during dry periods, then we can be self-sufficient. This is absolutely true, however the storage of water can be very expensive because of the quantities required for long-term irrigation purposes.

A bowling green, for instance, or any area of fine turf lawn of a similar size could need a very conservative estimate of 20 cubic meters (4400 gallons) of water for just 1 week of watering (and that’s just half the quantity recommended by turf professionals). That’s a tank measuring 5m long x 2m high x 2m wide…just for 1 week’s water at half a full application.

The same scenario applies to planting areas. Just think how long your water butt lasts if you are using it every day to water your plants or vegetables.

Anyone for golf? Don’t forget to bring your snorkel.

Golf courses, especially, need masses of water to irrigate the course. An 18 hole course could require 250 cubic meters (55000 gallons) just to water the greens over a week in the hottest part of the summer. That’s a very large and expensive storage requirement for any period of time in drought, and to maximise the collected rainfall.

Right now, the challenge for professional irrigation advisors and installers is give the client an irrigation system which, contrary to opinion, will still be valid and useful in the future. An irrigation system which makes the best use of natural resources (the free water falling from the sky), while keeping costs at economic levels. More importantly, to design an irrigation system that uses that water as efficiently as possible, without wastage.

Underground water storage tanks could help you deliver water efficiently.

Irrigation equipment manufacturers are currently investing millions in the quest to provide the latest highly efficient controllers, sensors and delivery equipment, proven and tested around the globe, to make the best use of the water available.

In summary, even if we continue to get more rainfall, there will be times of the year when you will need to water your garden…golf course…bowling green. So, if you do decide on a system, think about storage of surplus water and remember you’ll need a large storage capacity for long term use, (usually bigger than you think). Don’t consider this storage without thinking about a highly efficient irrigation system. The more efficient the system the longer this storage will last.

Finally, seek professional advice (mine, preferably!). If you don’t feel as though you are getting the right answers, or your needs are not fully covered, try someone else (like me!).

As we know the heat in the Middle East and the sub Saharan African Nations is to the utmost. The tem

As we know the heat in the Middle East and the sub Saharan African Nations is to the utmost. The temperature in the day hours goes up to 47 degrees which is extreme in nature. So, the desert rule applies here for all these countries where the weather is extremely hot during the day time and is nice and cold during the night time. However, one must take due cognizance of the fact that the weather in these countries is extreme.

Well, pertaining to the heat one must be sure that the best available option has been catered to with respect to water storage. Storing the water in the appropriate manner using the best available sources is highly important. The sole criterion is to ensure that the water does not heat up quickly. It is important to maintain the

energy conservation standards to increase energy efficiency in water storage tanks for residential and industrial uses.
It is quite possible that if the best option is not selected then you may find problems with respect to the storage facilities such as corrosion of the tanks due to heat. So basically, the need of the hour is to find an option that would not only preserve the quality of the water in a quality centric storage facility but would also be resistant to extreme heat. Now the question arises how this can be done?

According to the latest trends, it is pretty evident that the traditional way to store water which was largely prevalent in the middle countries has changed. The brick masonry, plastered well from inside and outside and rounded off at joints to avoid any leakage is no more considered as a beneficial option to store water. Gone are the days when such tanks were built. The PE insulated water tanks have taken the place of the traditional brick tanks.

Moving to the technical aspects of the polyethylene tanks popularly known as the PE foam water tanks, it is known to have four levels of insulated layer of foaming agent masterbatch having blowing agent masterbatch for tank incorporated in it using rotomoulding process. These exothermic blowing agent masterbatches are used to introduce part weight reduction for applications especially for water storage tanks.

The multi- layering provides a suitable vacuum which increases the insulation to a huge extent. These PE water Tanks have excellent thermal insulation which is widely appreciated and desired in the Middle East and the sub Saharan African Nations. The rigidity is several times greater than the normal two layer plastic water tanks.

To be specific there are a couple of things that one should take into consideration before choosing a suitable water tank. There is a process called rotational moulding process, known in short as ‘rotomoulding’. If your tanks have been manufactured using this process then you have made a good choice with the purchase. The roto-moulding process is a onetime molding technique which ensures that the products do not undergo great stress while it is manufactured thereby preserving its quality. To ensure that the UV rays do not enter the tank there should be at least 3% of carbon black in the polyethylene used to make the PE water tanks.

Now comes the most important aspect which most of water tanks manufacturers would love to know. Foaming agent masterbatches used in the production of water tanks provide several benefits to injection molded plastic articles. It also improves efficiency and cost effectiveness when applied to water tank insulation. It’s the availability in abundance and the price factors that give an extra edge to the PE water Tanks.

There are two types of rotomoulded materials used by thermal insulation manufacturers which are LLDPE Rotomoulded material and HDPE Rotomoulded material. It is generally seen that LLDPE Roto moulded material is used commonly used for water tanks. The main reason is the cost which is more when HDPE materials are used.

Many Indian companies have developed special types of foaming agent masterbatches that shows excellent activation and compatibility with intended polymer systems when introduced during the manufacturing of rotomoulded products.

Rotofoam masterbatch is manufactured in the form of pulverized roto moulded powder. This rotofoam powder ensures an efficient blow and higher gas yields which reduces the weight of the plastic part to great extent and increases the thermal and acoustic insulation

It also eliminates the depression marks that are created if injection moulding technique is used. These sink marks reduces the thickness of storage tank walls

Rotofoam masterbatch are very easy to handle during production process

The supply of clean water to area residents is a huge issue for Kirucodo as the vast majority of the population get their water from open sources such as streams, many of which are polluted & distant from the households.

Community water access point for fetching water for domestic use

Providing safe & clean water across the area is a high priority area for us & is the subject of a major project we want to commence in 2012. As we have explored ways to provide solutions, we recently received information from the “Tools with a Mission” organisation in the UK which contains plans for 1500L water storage tanks which can be constructed easily by local volunteers. This information has excited us as the tanks seem to be a very good solution that is fairly easy to implement using local volunteer labour. These tanks have been built in many locations in Africa, including at the nearby Bethany Christian Centre & Orphange – so we know they can work for us!

We are just starting on a project where we will build an initial tank to make sure that we understand the details & complexities of construction. Once that has been completed we will grow the project to provide solutions to area residents. As with all infrastructure projects, the costs are high & out of reach of the local population, so we will be seeking donations to assist with the purchase of materials to build the tanks. We are collecting information to determine the cost to construct a tank & once this is complete will commece building the initial tank as soon as we have sufficient funds.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Drought Monitor has recently published information indica

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Drought Monitor has recently published information indicating that up to 95 percent of Texas is experiencing either “severe” or “exceptional” drought conditions this year. According to the National Weather Service, Texas experienced the hottest period (June through August 2011) on record in the U.S. In addition, the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) forecasts that the Texas drought could become the worst on record and LCRA’s Board of Directors decided on Sept. 21, 2011 to ask the state for permission to significantly curtail or cut off water for downstream agricultural use next year. Residential water supplies in the region will also be further impacted with water conservation regulations in Texas and other Western states, as weather service meteorologist Victor Murphy recently stated, “And probably some of the most widespread water restrictions, too.”

The trends of a warming climate and well documented cyclical drought conditions that are predicted to continue to impact the Southern U.S. for the next decade may lead to even more severe drought scenarios, where access to reserves of clean water for household, agricultural and industrial use are further reduced. The ability to respond to severe drought conditions requires access to information and residents in drought stricken states should make note of the various products available to address emergency water shortages. Interstate Products, Inc. (IPI), the leading manufacturer of spill containment products and the preferred source for environmental solutions manufactures and distributes a wide variety of collapsible water storage tanks that are a key component of any rainwater harvesting system for industrial, agricultural and residential applications.

Around the world, many people rely on rainwater collection systems to meet most of their water needs, including household potable water, landscaping and agricultural uses. In particularly dryer regions of the U.S., even where most residents have access to a public water supply, both homeowners and businesses are now addressing the issues of drought related water shortages and mandatory water conservation laws by installing rainwater storage tank systems to meet non-potable water needs like landscape irrigation. There are a variety of options to consider when selecting a water storage tank. Many permanent storage tanks or cisterns are made from concrete, fiberglass, metal, polyethylene or other materials and can be located either above or below ground. In this article we will discuss rainwater harvesting systems that feature above ground, collapsible water storage tank solutions.

Rainwater capture and storage is still a primary method for collecting the water needed to meet both agricultural and potable water requirements. The most common types of water collection systems are designed to capture rainwater from roofs and transport the water through gutter systems and downspouts into water storage tanks where it can be safely stored until needed. Major components of a rainwater collection system are:

Water catchment surface or collection areas like rooftops

Water conveying systems including gutters and downspouts

Water filtration devices such as first-flush and screening devices

Water storage tanks or cisterns

Water distribution systems for landscape or other use

Collapsible water storage tanks come in a wide variety of sizes. For residential use, common sizes range from 100, 500, 1,000 2,000 and 5,000 gallons. When deciding on the most appropriate size storage tank, variables to consider are water usage requirements, the local rainwater supply, water demand levels, the estimated length of anticipated drought periods, water collection surface areas available and the size of area available for installing a collapsible water storage tank.

Interstate Products manufactures a wide variety of water bladders for personal water storage, emergency relief situations and industrial or agricultural applications. Anytime there is a need for water storage, our portable, collapsible storage tanks and water bladders are ideal for use as part of a rainwater harvesting or general storage system. IPI’s water bladders, water tanks and pillow tanks are flexible, collapsible and designed for durability and fast deployment. All of IPI’s collapsible storage tanks are manufactured to the highest quality standards using a variety of materials that can be used to hold potable water and other non-potable liquids.

From our South Florida manufacturing facility, Interstate Products stocks an extensive variety of tank sizes, including 50,000, 25,000, 10,000, 5,000 2,000, 1,000, 500 and 100 gallon tanks. We also build custom sized potable water bladder tanks, chemical tanks; as well as tanks for bulk liquid transport, bilge slop storage and fuel storage to exact specifications. Our standard pillow tanks are available with many types of connections for water distribution. These containers are designed for land based operations, but can also be used on the decks of vessels. For use on rough terrain areas, IPI Ground Mats are water proof and available for under the bladder for protection from rocks and sharp objects.

As a leading multi-brand supplier of quality environmental, maintenance and safety product solutions, IPI also offers special services for emergency relief situations and military use. To learn more about Interstate Product’s wide selection of stock and custom water storage and fuel storage tanks, portable spill berms, hazmat supplies, absorbents, fire rated buildings, drum containment pallets, cylinders and safety & security cabinets visit our online store at: http://store.interstateproducts.com/all_tanks.htm

ULTRA FILTRATION TECHNOLOGY The growing significance of using membranes in the water and wastewater treatment process is due to various factors. Insufficient freshwater resources first led to the development of membranes for use in desalination. In recent years other factors have helped to extend the use of membrane techniques in all areas of water and wastewater treatment: •

Even stricter and often contradictory regulations on water quality: a process that physically removes pathogens, membranes make it possible for disinfection to occur without producing any undesirable by-products. •

The growing significance of water reuse: wastewater has now become a resource in cities as well as in arid areas. Membranes are an ideal tool for recycling water due to their extensive abatement range. •

Technical advances: membrane technology has been used in the water treatment process for less than 50 years. After a long research and development phase, its industrial application accelerated once the main patents passed into the public domain. Aquasol Ultrafiltration (UF600) membrane is designed to be used with chlorine. Because of its specially high chemical resistance to chlorination (sterilization) process with addition to its traditionally good separation character it can deliver bacteria log reduction up to 6 log, therefore it is very suitable to be used in many sewage / wastewater recycling plants where required treated water quality has become more stringent.

Rainwater Harvesting system – Water Rhapsody Grand Opus

We can provide you with the means to collect hundreds of tons of water by harvesting rainwater!
Water Rhapsody has made it possible for one to harvest rainwater and get this system to pay for its cost of installation in a reasonable period of time.
Over recent years water costs combined with sewerage rates have escalated far faster than inflation. This means that it has become worth your while to install rainwater harvesting systems. You may now augment supply from the traditional sources of dams etc, and rainwater harvesting as a way to augment supply has become imperative.
You no longer need to install water tanks close to your house to harvest rainwater. These rainwater tanks can now stand anywhere you like, because we get to deliver this water to wherever your water tanks stand, so the rainwater tanks can stand unobtrusively at your home or commercial building. Our Rainwater Harvesting FAQ’s explain how rainwater is harvested, delivered by gravity to rainwater tanks, and delivered to your whole household during the rain season in a sustainable manner.
