It was a presentation of EPA staff concerning the new PCB Mega Rule — to an audience of several hundred mostly industry representatives.

The fact is that natural gas pipelines are now regulated under the PCB rule because many of them ARE contaminated with PCBs, due to leaking of PCB oil used in the compressor pumps which push the gas through the pipeline.

All along the gas lines — from the original wells to our homes and industries — are condensate traps where sampling often finds PCB in high levels. (Between 50 and 500 ppm)

I am saying goodbye to you in galoshes. The train splashes some ducks and again some fires as homeless men hawk newspapers then stuff them into boots, light the boots on fire. My boots aren’t on fire. Fellow humans, I am looking at your garlands: your linked shoulders, your popcorn strung up in stairwells, your paper arms. You do your crossword. The train skips a track but we don’t know; we’re not driving. Wheels move back down. I am saying goodbye to the Charles as eight buildings light up eight windows and eight memory-boats spill along one bridge. Goodbye, bridge. I am lighting a river on fire. Autumn bricks, interlaced fingers. Some of us will mistake one brick for another.

THEME: Summer fun at the beach INVITATIONS: Cut round circles and color one side like a beach bal

THEME: Summer fun at the beach

INVITATIONS: Cut round circles and color one side like a beach ball. On the other side, use California beach slang, such as:

“Hey, dudes and dudettes–slap on your best beach gear and come hang out at the Indoor Beach Party. Don’t let winter chill you out! There’ll be a prize for the baddest beach threads, and we’ll have some really rad activities! Bring your fave beach snack for munchin’ and blow off this winter scene–totally!”

This is a fun party for all ages, from teens to adults.

MATERIALS FOR ACTIVITIES: Two surfboards or plain wooden boards of similar size; two large bowls; wrapped hard candies; two plastic pitchers; two clear plastic glasses; two or four rolls of Life Saver candies; large box of sand; 20 pennies; blackboard and chalk or whiteboard (or poster) and marker; team prize for the competitions, such as kiddie sunglasses for each team member; prize for best beach outfit, such as a pair of underwater goggles; music for dancing, if desired (Beach Boys, etc.) and stereo; prize for dance contest, if desired, such as a beach ball or water wings; video of old beach movie and VCR, if desired.

FOOD: The guests will bring snacks, and you can provide the cold pop–six-packs in various flavors, packed in an ice chest. You might also provide something more exotic, like a fresh pineapple. Set the food out on a table covered with a beach blanket or large beach towel. Serve in creative containers, like large seashells, a diver’s mask, little plastic boats, etc.

DECORATIONS: First of all, have the party room warm and well lighted, as the guests will be wearing summery clothing. In two clear corners, create two famous beaches, such as Malibu, Waikiki or Palm Beach. If you have local beaches, you could use those names. Label the beaches with signs and try to recreate something that beach is famous for. Borrow some potted palms for Palm Beach, or make palm trees on the wall with colored construction paper. For Malibu Beach, you might spark some laughter by setting up a scene with Malibu Barbie and Ken in their beach buggy, etc. Light blue cloths or curtains could hang on the wall as an ocean backdrop. You could display diving or surfing gear, if you have access to it. In other areas of the room hang colorful swimsuits, beach towels, beach posters and Beach Boys album covers. Near the refreshment table, you might set up beach blankets and umbrellas on the floor. Have Beach Boys surfin’ music playing softly in the background during the competitions.

BLOW-BY-BLOW: As guests arrive, assign them equally to the two (or more, if the group is large) different beaches. Each beach team then uses this time to come up with its own cheer. When the teams are complete, they each give their cheers, and the competitions begin.

Surf's up!

The first competition is the Surfing Race. It will require three people from each group, usually two boys and a girl. The teams choose their contestants before the race is explained. Give the boys from each team a surfboard or similar piece of wood, and they hold it between them while the girl sits on it. On a signal, the groups race to the end of the room and back. The team to arrive first gets a point on the board.

The next contest is the High Dive, which requires one representative from each beach. You (the host/hostess) provide the contestants with one pitcher of water each. On the floor are two empty glasses. These they must fill at least two-thirds full from the position of standing on chairs. The one who spills the least water on the floor gets the point for her team.

The next event is the Underwater Swimming Race. One contestant is chosen to represent each beach. Give each one a deep bowl filled with water at the bottom of which are several wrapped candies. He is seated at a table or may kneel on the floor in front of the bowl, keeping his hands behind his back. At the signal, the contestant must bob for the candies, getting them out with his mouth. The first one to get all the candies out wins the point for his team.

The next event, the Life-Saving Contest, is announced, and two representatives are chosen from each beach. The two partners stand four or five paces apart, facing each other. Give one side several Life-Saver candies, which they must toss, one at a time, to their partners. The other side must catch them with their mouths. The team which catches the most wins the point.

For the last event, the Buried Treasure Race, one contestant is chosen from each group. (Make sure that every person on each team has the chance to compete in at least one event.) This could be the tie-breaking event! A large box of sand is placed at one end of the room; the representatives line up at the other. Twenty pennies are buried in the sand, ten for each team. On a signal, the contestants race to the box, dig their ten pennies out with their hands, and race back. The first one back with all ten pennies wins the final point for her team. The beach with the most points on the board wins a team prize.

After this, you award a prize to the guest with the best beach outfit. Then serve the refreshments, and turn the music up. Guests may dance, if desired, or, after eating, you may show a video of an old beach movie. If you choose to dance, a spontaneous dance contest–whether ’50’s style or the current craze–adds to the fun, and you may award a prize to the winning couple.

I admit it. I’m unduly impressed by geology and if there’s one thing Montana and the West has in abundance, it’s rocks. Some of the most interesting geology I know of lays in the channeled scablands of eastern Washington. There is a great article in the current issue of High Country News about the Glacial Lake Missoula floods.

If you haven’t been, I highly recommend that you schedule a weekend trip over to the scablands and take in as much as you can. The story is truly impressive. Failure of a 2,000-ft. high ice dam releasing 500 cubic miles of water. Two trillion tons of water flowing down the Clark Fork Valley at speeds of up to 80 mph. Ten times the flow of all the rivers in the world emptying out through the Columbia Gorge in three days. And this happened as many as 100 times over 3,000 years. How could you not be impressed. The Ice Age Floods Institute, a volunteer organization sponsors lectures and field trips and is working to make materials available to the public. In 2001 they began work on The Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail an interpretive route around important landmarks of the flood area. You can get books and videos from the IAFI website store.

Dry Falls in the Grand Coulee

At Dry Falls, near Coulee City, WA you will see the remnants of a waterfall ten times the size of Niagara, created by the floods (the plunge pools are pretty good fishing by the way). Many of these features were first cataloged by J Harlan Bretz who spent nearly his entire life convincing the community of geologists that the features were created by the catastrophic floods. There is an excellent recent biography by John Soennichsen, Bretz’s Flood that I heartily recommend. For another good description of the floods, you might also look for Glacial Lake Missoula and Its Humongous Floods by UM geology professor David Alt. The books and videos are great, but this is stuff you just have to see in person to fully comprehend the gigantic scale. Just one more reason why the Northwest is such an interesting place to live.

By Passion4Safety

H2O (Water), one of our world’s natural and greatest resources, is vital to the life-line of this world. The type of water we drink (depending on chemicals present such as bacteria, chlorine, lead, etc) can play a major effect on our body and our immune system if we are not careful. For our children especially, consuming water (clean, filtered water) is very important and vital to their growing bodies. First Alert, primary leader of safety, has made a Premium Drinking Water Test Kit convenient to the needs of those that value the water that they drink, function, and perform with.

Water is a human right. However, over one billion people do not have access to safe drinking water and more than one million children die each year of diseases caused by unsafe water and lack of sanitation. People around the world are joining the movement to reverse these trends. Friends of the Right to Water is a network of groups and activists from around the world working toward the following goals:

1) Ensuring that affordable access to clean water be secured and protected as a basic human right around the world

2) Ensuring that water systems be locally, publicly and democratically owned and controlled, in a transparent manner

3) Preventing governments, the private water industry, international financial institutions and others from interfering with the human right to water

The right to water campaign is a two-tiered or inside-outside strategy that encourages local groups to push their governments and courts to recognize the human right to water.

To get involved in the Right to Water Campaign:

1) Send a letter to Prime Minister Harper, demanding that the Canadian government support the right to water at the United Nations.

2) Sign the Endorsement Statement.

3) Contact the Blue Planet Project at 1-800-387-7177 or email blueplanet@canadians.org

The title of this post is certainly not original. It can be found on a number ot items, including tee shirts, sweatshirts, bumper stickers, refrigerator magnets and key chain fobs. It does, however, sum up how I feel about being a grandmother. I LOVE it.

Parents have so much to be concerned about in raising children. Grandparents can relax and just enjoy being with their grandchildren. While the typical young mom feels torn between taking time to let a young child explore the world and getting through her long list of errands, grandparents more often have the luxury of clearing calendars and taking time to answer questions and see the world from the perspective of someone seeing for the first time. I love science and I love taking young children to a hand-ons children’s museum. It is so much fun watching a young child explore the properties of water, wind and light! I would have liked to take more such trips with my own children but back then, there was no only a shortage of time but money too. Money that was usually spent on clothes and food rather than outings.

When I am with my grandchildren, behaviors that perplexed or frustrated in my own children, I now know are typical stages. I have the experience to anticipate how a situation is likely to progress and can step in to either help or distract the child’s attention to a safer or more pleasant activity. And the really undesirable stages, I have the luxury of stepping back and letting my children handle. These days I don’t get up in the middle of the night to feed a baby or change a diaper or deal with a tantrum unless I want to do so.

I also enjoy being an additional level of support for my grandchildren. I am fortunate to have children who are taking responsibility for their own children, so that I feel no responsibility to take on the day-to-day job of parenting my grandchildren. I can be a support to my children, answering questions about what is normal behavior and how to handle challenges. My husband and I are also blessed with the financial resources to be able to help out when extraordinary expenses arise.

Unfortunately, at the present time, I am not able to spend nearly as much time as I would like to with my five grandchildren. Three years ago, an unwanted but unavoidable job transfer, required that my husband and myself relocate more than a day’s drive from our grandchildren. Subsequent moves on the part of my grandchildren’s parents for the purpose of pursuing higher education, have spread my grandchildren out geographically, so that is no longer one place to go back to see them all.

I am hoping this blog can be a location on the internet where myself and other grandparents that have to grandparent long distance can share ideas on how to do so creatively. Please share your comments. i look forward to hearing from you

There are many home water filtration systems to choose from. Consequently, you should be aware of one individual feature that characterizes a reliable filtration system. For every consumer the most important thing to realize is that almost all the brand-name filtration appliances include a multi stage method which depends on activated carbon filtration.

Most Expresso Water Filtration System use activated carbon filters that filter out the harmful chemicals that may be in the water supply.

The first phase is mechanical filtration, which removes tiny microscopic particulates that harm the taste of water and darken it. Mechanical filtration can eliminate materials including chlorine and many common sediments. Chlorine is one of the most prevalent compounds in our water, and it is the chief reason for the bitter taste and unhealthiness of the water.

The tasks of absorption and ion exchange are the following stages in water purification. These two processes filter the water chemically, that is to say, by breaking down chemical materials then separating them from the water. The toxins removed by these tasks include industrial cleaners and fertilizers which are odorless and tasteless but absolutely not harmless. Owing to the difficulty of filtering out these chemicals, however, water treatment plants are not compelled to eliminate them from regular tap water.

This is the reason why the most effective Expresso Water Filtration System will not just clean the obvious elements such as chlorine and sediments but ought to cleanse your water from all of the additional dangerous chemicals. All of these compounds, including chlorine, have been labeled as major causes of the increase in cancer and degenerative nervous disorders during the last century.

So given that you realize the importance of a multi-stage filtration process, how many kinds of home water filtration systems remain to select from? Quite a few, but the top of the line have certain features that you ought to be sure your model has. Firstly, the best systems are guaranteed to filter out what they say they can filter out. They also come with superb customer service, lifetime warranties, and money back guarantees.

These home water filtration systems are uncomplicated to hook up and maintain, and cost a meager ten cents per gallon of water. You can buy an entire home system or you may opt to protect a few taps in your home, like those you use the most.

Aquasana RHINO® EQ-300 Home Water Filter: The Rhino® EQ-300 Whole House Water Filter has completed three years of assessment by Underwriters Laboratories. The filter itself, the production facility and all customer support offers are verified by UL using the most severe industry regulations.

Jupiter Melody JP 104: Jupiter Melody JP 104 water ionizer is also labeled as an Alkalizing Water Purifier. The unit is a Point-of-Use counter-top unit, and hooks up to the tap either via the diverter valve, or directly into cold water pipe. Jupiter Melody Water Ionizer includes a hot water and low pressure protection, and 9 Level Settings – 4 level settings of alkaline water, 4 level settings of acidic water, 1 level setting of purified water.

Today, I’m calling Senator Hutchison (202-224-5922) about S. 624, the Water for the World Act. Here’s what I’m going to say:

“Hello. My name is Allison Kami and I’m from Denton, TX. I’m calling to express my concern about the lack of access to clean drinking water in developing countries. I’d like to ask Senator Hutchison to cosponsor Senate Bill 624 to help bring sustainable access to safe drinking water to 100 million people by 2015.”

Please join me! Also, please pray for plans to come together for the next Charity: Water fundraiser here in Denton. We’ve hit some speed bumps, but I’m still hoping we can get things together for an event on December 5th. There’s not much I can do at this point but wait for replies from some key people. So, I’m praying. I hope you will too. May God bless you and your neighbor through you today!

I heard that Federal Stimulus funds were going to be used for ’shovel-ready’ projects, a

I heard that Federal Stimulus funds were going to be used for ’shovel-ready’ projects, aimed at creating jobs and improving Massachusetts’s crumbling infrastructure. So when I heard that $9 million was approved to build a footbridge over Route 1, connecting Patriot Place mall with a proposed office park and allowing pedestrians easier access to parking lots outside Gillette stadium, I was pretty outraged. Deval Patrick added that this project would help lure bigger corporations to the state, improving jobs and our economy. In essence, more concrete sprawl at the cost of green space.

This on top of recent news that $15 million in stimulus funds will go to road improvements to aid the expansion of another private development — Assembly Square in Somerville. Featuring 5 million square feet of mixed used property, the new development will house furniture giant, IKEA, and a movie theater among other commercial spaces. So one has to consider, what effect will the diversion of these funds to development projects ultimately have on our economy and our state?

Well, consider this New York Times article: Sewers at Capacity, Pollution Spills Into Waterways. I highly urge you to read the article, but the idea is that our rapidly growing population, particularly in metropolitan areas, is having detrimental effects on our outdated infrastructure, particularly our sewer systems. Sewage treatment plants, overburdened by human waste mixed with stormwater runoff, reach capacity quickly when it rains, and they are forced to shut intake gates. This backs up sewers throughout cities, and overflows of waste pour out into lakes, canals, rivers, the ocean, even streets or near drinking water intake points. Though this violates the Clean Water Act, fines are rarely collected. As the article states,

In the last three years alone, more than 9,400 of the nation’s 25,000 sewage systems — including those in major cities — have reported violating the law by dumping untreated or partly treated human waste, chemicals and other hazardous materials into rivers and lakes and elsewhere, according to data from state environmental agencies and the Environmental Protection Agency.

But fewer than one in five sewage systems that broke the law were ever fined or otherwise sanctioned by state or federal regulators, the Times analysis shows.

Some argue that fines would create political tensions, while others argue that diverting more money from already stretched budgets would only perpetuate deteriorating infrastructure.

As storms seem to become more severe, the problems are only getting worse. In 2007, New York City had three 25-year storms, storms only expected once every 25 years. Overflows are then inevitable, shutting down beaches, putting human health at risk and creating unsanitary living conditions.

SO what can be done? There are a number of solutions, both for new infrastructure and retrofitting old systems.

* Porous pavement. Sidewalks, parking lots, walkways can all be paved with porous materials so that stormwater seeps through and is gradually absorbed by the land.

* Increase landscaped areas. More green space means more water can be absorbed and less will run into storm water drains.

* Residential water conservation such as dual-flush toliets, low-flow showerheads, greywater systems, rain barrels to reduce the amount of water added to our sewer systems.

* Green roofs. They greatly reduce storm water runoff not to mention they reduce heating & cooling bills, attract wildlife, reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and they last longer than traditional roofs. They should be implemented wherever possible.

* Clean sidewalks with brooms instead of high-pressure water

* Design buildings and parking garages vertically and efficiently to reduce sprawl

* Improve our sewer systems so that water treatment plants aren’t overburdened

These are just some of the ways we can improve our sewage and storm water runoff. Generations have had access to clean water, and have been able to flush their waste away into a vast system without so much as a second thought. But many people have died of waterborne diseases, and many more have died because they are denied access to clean water. So whether a pedestrian footbridge will be more money into our economy in the next few years is debatable, but what will happen to our sewer systems? To our bridges? Our dams? Levees?

The American Society of Civil Engineers has produced a ‘report card’ for America’s infrastructure and our grades aren’t anything to bring home. Average GPA? D. And what does the ASCE predict the improvements will cost? Roughly $2.2 trillion. The longer we wait, the higher the cost and the worse the repercussions.

We have recently hit a huge landmark: The United Nations Population Fund reports that in 2008, for the first time in history, more than half the world’s population is living in towns and cities. The wave of urbanization is just beginning to swell and how we deal with infrastructure and accommodate that growth will dictate our future.

the more i read and write about the urban water situation in Accra, the more frustrated i get. i started learning about this topic on a whim because i’ve always been interested in resource management and the politics/economics associated with it, but now it’s become more than just an interest. i’m on the hunt for volunteer/intern opportunities to do with the situation. I could help out at this research institute on the dams dialogue but knowing me, I’d enjoy something more hands-on a lot more.

one of the reasons why a foreign company partnered up with the water company in charge of the urban supply is to “train” the staff to be more efficient – however that would work. After talking to an expat about his experience working at the office and reading a number of articles on the progress of this private-public partnership, I’ve concluded that progress takes time, but it shouldn’t take this long. However, it’s difficult for foreigners to work with Ghanaians here b/c the work culture is so much different than America’s, at least. We work at such a fast-pace and as a country, are not used to waiting, waiting, waiting and then being okay with unexpected results. Here – in Ghana – people know that this is what their country is like, but one person, or even a group of people, cannot change the culture.

It’s a situation that requires imminent attention because it is too unfair for the poor in teh city… they pay so much more for their water per litre and so much more of their income goes towards it.

” One goal of the Clean Water Act of 1972 was to upgrade the nation’s sewer systems, many of them built more than a century ago, to handle growing populations and increasing runoff of rainwater and waste. During the 1970s and 1980s, Congress distributed more than $60 billion to cities to make sure that what goes into toilets, industrial drains and street grates would not endanger human health.

But despite those upgrades, many sewer systems are still frequently overwhelmed, according to a New York Times analysis of environmental data. As a result, sewage is spilling into waterways. “

It is a fact that there is much more to what life is all about than cleaning houses and toilets, but what feels “freeing” about cleaning is its beautiful promise of a fresh start. The good thing is, this “fresh start” can always be done anytime. You can clean anytime! This improves not only your house, but your outlook towards life.

But just when you thought it’s all over once you are all wrong.
Nasa has released the latest raw images of Saturn’s moon Enceladus, from the Cassini spacecraft’s extended mission to the planet and its satellites.

The images show the moon’s rippling terrain in remarkable clarity.

Cassini started transmitting uncalibrated temperature data and images during a flyby on 21 November.

The data will help scientists create a highly detailed mosaic image of the southern part of the moon’s Saturn-facing hemisphere, and a thermal map.

This thermal map will help researchers to study the long fractures in the south polar region of the moon’s surface, which have been dubbed “tiger stripes” and are warmer than the rest of the surface.

Scientists are particularly interested in these fissures because they spew out jets of water vapour, and other particles, in plumes that reach hundreds of kilometres above the surface.

This flyby was scientists’ last peek at the tiger stripes before the south pole fades into the darkness of winter for many years.

Cassini completed its initial four-year mission to explore Saturn in June 2008.

But because the spacecraft is still functioning so well, it was reprogrammed to work overtime on the Cassini Equinox Mission.

The extended mission will last until late 2010. It was named after Saturn’s equinox, which occurred in August 2009 – when the sun shone directly on the equator, illuminating the northern hemisphere and the rings’ northern face.

Working overtime

Saturn’s orbit is so vast that Equinox happens only once every 15 Earth years.

Cassini is now continuing to observe seasonal changes brought about by the changing sun angle on Saturn, its rings and its moons.

“These first raw images are spectacular, and paint an even more fascinating picture of Enceladus,” said Bob Pappalardo, Cassini project scientist at Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, US.

“The Cassini teams will be delving into the data to better understand the workings of this bizarre, active moon.”

This was the eighth targeted flyby of Enceladus, and brought Cassini to within about 1,600km (1,000 miles) of the moon’s surface.

Cassini is now cruising toward Rhea, another of the planet’s moons.
