“The waterboy just needed some water!” -The Waterboy, starring Adam Sandler Water should

“The waterboy just needed some water!” -The Waterboy, starring Adam Sandler

Water should be all that you drink 90% of the time. Gatorade has been talked up for years, and it is needed in some instances, but the average fitness enthusiast has no use for the high-sugar drink. Soda’s strip the calcium from your bones and cause tiny eruptions in your stomach lining that can cause ulcers, acid reflux, and a pH imbalance. Coffee and caffeinated tea dehydrate your body and strain your kidneys and liver.

It’s ok to drink gatorade, soda, tea, coffee, etc. sometimes, but you should not depend on them to hydrate you.

Here’s why it’s important to be properly hydrated with water.

1. You actually lose the use of your fast-twitch muscles when they are dehyrated.

2. Blood needs a high volume of water to bring nutrients to your muscles for repair and recovery.

3. Drinking the right amount of water for you body actually speeds up your metabolism. (Faster weight loss!)

4. Water hydrates you 3x faster than any other fluid.

5. Your body is 75% water, so it absorbs plain water easier than a fluid that needs to be filtered by your body.

To be properly hydrated, each day you need to drink half your body weight in ounces of water. Example: If you weigh 200 lbs, 200/2=100, so you need to drink 100 ounces of pure water each day. Anything else you want to drink needs to be in excess of that amount.

Somewhere in the 46th District needs water? You got it, Mr. Henry Winkler! More potentially great in

Somewhere in the 46th District needs water? You got it, Mr. Henry Winkler!

More potentially great infrastructure news in the 46th. After literally years of work, there is a proposed settlement agreement to bring public water service to approximately 60 residents in Mt. Pleasant and Avella, including the Meadowcroft Rockshelter.

See all that wood? Is it just me, or does it seem almost crazy not to have water available in case of a fire?

The proposed settlement between the Office of the Consumer Advocate and Pennsylvania American Water Company, which can be found online here, still needs the approval of an Administrative Law Judge, but I am hopeful that we will soon have water flowing to yet another rural area of my district at very little cost to the residents.

I would be remiss if I didn’t give special recognition to Mr. John Adams, whose tireless lobbying on this issue since before I was even elected cannot be ignored. John is living proof that sometimes the squeaky wheel does in fact get the grease. When I think of John’s efforts, I can think of no more fitting quote:

Yes you can, John. Yes you can.

I am giving this movie a 69 mainly because it is deserved, the movie is great, Adam Sandler is funny

I am giving this movie a 69 mainly because it is deserved, the movie is great, Adam Sandler is funny and you are finished satisfied. Going off of that is the second reason why this movie got a 69; mainly that just as much as Adam Sandler would want to hear that he had someone finish satisfied, I think he would also appreciate such a sexually connotative rating. And I think that’s a lot of what is behind this movie, you laugh along because, well, you know that he’s having a lot of fun doing it, and as juvenile as it may seem sometimes, when you’re high it’s just hilarious.

This is one of those that just stay with you. It was a childhood staple, along with his other late 90’s works, such as Big Daddy or Billy Madison, and is now a, whatever you want to call me, staple. Because the humor goes along so well because you’re stoned and what you are watching is downright ridiculous. I mean comon, who can be that passionate about getting water, and then becoming a football player, and then he meets his dad at the end, the whole movie is just crazy and fun to watch.

I’ve been an East Sacramentan for eight years now so we’ve seen quite a few restaurants come and go

I’ve been an East Sacramentan for eight years now so we’ve seen quite a few restaurants come and go in the neighborhood. It was bittersweet when Café Milazzo went out of business a couple years ago – it was a casual and comfortable space with friendly service but the food was lacking. We did enjoy $2 Tuesdays when you could get $2 slices of pizza and $2 beers. Little did I know I was in for much, much better pizza within those walls years later…

Ever since I heard Rick Mahan, chef/owner of the Waterboy, was opening a new restaurant, I’ve been dying to try it. The store front was wrapped in brown paper for what felt like years. Finally, One Speed Restaurant opened last month and apparently I wasn’t the only one who had been anticipating that great day. We tried three different times to dine at the fully remodeled restaurant space (Café Milazzo diners will be shocked at the transition) but each time we were told it would be a 45-minute wait – just something we can’t do right now with a toddler and an infant even though the atmosphere is absolutely kid appropriate.

Therefore, we’ve done takeout twice until our most recent attempt last Sunday, which happened to be our sixth wedding anniversary. We were told again it would be a 45-minute wait and we decided to place our order to go yet again. While we were waiting, my husband had the great idea to entertain our two-year old with a walk down to Burr’s (East Sac’s neighborhood ice cream parlor featuring Vic’s ice cream) to pick up ice cream to go for dessert.

Upon the boys return, the one table in the bar opened up and the amazingly friendly staff sat us and served the gnocchi with browned butter and sage (a well-portioned appetizer perfectly cooked for melt-in-your-mouth potato pillows in my favorite decadent sauce), plus the two pizzas (classic Margherita and Rick’s – potato, caramelized onions, pancetta, goat cheese, olives and arugula, OMG) we had ordered piping hot. The ambience, the service, and the food were well worth the wait (the years and the minutes) and we look forward to having One Speed in the neighborhood for many years to come.

So apparently they just give out Hollywood Walk of Fame stars to just about any schmuck (yeah, I said schmuck) that wants one. So who asked to be included in 2010. Yeah, Chris “Back Back Back” Berman. My life sucks.

Ok, just because you can say “BACK BACK BACK” 25 times when Mark McGwire hits dingers at the home run derby does not, I repeat, does not mean you’re a “star.” What makes it worse is the people he’ll be inducted with. These people are actually talented.

“The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced Wednesday that next year’s Walk honorees from the world of motion pictures will be Crowe, Sandler, James Cameron, John Cusack, Colin Firth, Gale Anne Hurd, Alan Menken, Randy Newman, Emma Thompson and Mark Wahlberg.

TV honorees are Maher, Chris Berman, Jon Cryer, Peter Graves, Jimmy Kimmel, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Sam Waterston.

Recording artists to be recognized are Starr, Bryan Adams, the Funk Brothers, Alan Jackson, Chaka Khan, Van Morrison, Marco Antonio Solis, ZZ Top and the late Roy Orbison.

My momma always told me not to get a tatoo of Roy Orbison on my ass. But what momma don’t know, won’t hurt her.

Apparently I’ve missed something but Smoking Smarties is where it’s at! How cool is this kid, I mean wouldn’t you hang out with him. This kid never gets picked last on the playground and you know the ladies be loving him wherever he goes. Now for some disclaimers:

Physicians are beginning to see young patients with irritation to the throats and noses from “smoking” Smarties. If the areas become irritated enough, there is risk of infection.

Like all candy, Smarties are meant to be eaten, not “smoked.”

It has been one month (almost) since I’ve managed to blog. We all know its not because I have suddenly sworn off computers and found a different calling. I’ve been toying with the idea of posting many times now but never felt the urge I guess. The most recent time brings me back to the quote in the title. I was watching firefly and it boggled my mind how such a good series could not stay on TV and yet a movie like Waterboy gets made.

Now don’t get me wrong I fully enjoyed Waterboy but it still is low brow humor and no where does it really deserve to be appreciated more than some other shows/movies.

In that regard I am going to finally attempt to add a Movie Quote daily to my blog kindof give it a theme of the day feel. It would also coincide with me finally adding a Movie/Book section.

I warn you all now I used to watch alot of B-rated movies and have owned several that you’d probably shake your head at but I know some of you appreciate a bad movie and maybe my list will remind you to go back and watch some gems.

As for work and life I’m still working and learning so thats good. I’ve escaped any problems for the next several months I hope so that is very positive.

Odetta, whom Martin Luther King Jr called The Queen of American Folk Music, is very ill. Maya Angelou said of her:

If only one could be sure that every 50 years a voice and a soul like Odetta’s would come along, the centuries would pass so quickly and painlessly we would hardly recognize time.

A ubiquitous presence for civil rights, peace, and great music for over 50 years, we are blessed to be able to let her know how much we appreciate her. Her manager, Doug Yeager, released the following statement:

Dear Friends of Odetta,

On behalf of Odetta’s adopted daughter Michelle Esrick and her niece Jan Ford (in California), I would like to share with you -Odetta’s large extended family of brothers and sisters – the current health crisis in her life. On Saturday, she went into Lenox Hill Hospital for a check-up and IV nourishment. However, on Sunday evening she went into kidney failure, and we were told that the next 24 hours would determine if she would survive. Miraculously, she made it through that emergency, but is still listed in critical condition. I was on the road when she went in the hospital and rushed back on Sunday. Jan and I are thankful that Michelle was here and has been by Odetta’s side every moment of this ordeal.

Odetta believes she is going to sing at Obama’s Inauguration, and I believe that is the reason she is still alive. She has a big poster of Barack Obama taped on the wall across from her bed. Her old heart has already outperformed and lasted far beyond the expectations of the heart specialists who treated her in January-March 2007 when she had her last health crisis while touring out West. Now compounded with the kidney failure, the doctors at the hospital are trying to do everything possible to stabilize her system and prevent the weakening of her other organs. They have her on dialysis now to rid the body of the toxic poisons that have built up, and it seems to be slowly working. She is sleeping a lot, but after a dialysis treatment and some food, she is coherent and talking. She is not in pain. We are told that she will be in the ICU Unit for at least another week, and that we’ll just have to wait and see after that.

All of you are well aware of Odetta’s indomitable spirit. Accordingly, I wouldn’t bet against her singing for Barack in January! If you would like to send a card, I know that she would love to hear from you.

Ms. Odetta Gordon
Room # 719, 7th Floor ICU Unit
LENOX HILL HOSPITAL
100 East 77th Street
New York, NY 10021

Her influence on folk music is unequaled. Bob Dylan said of her:

“The first thing that turned me on to folk singing was Odetta. I heard a record of hers [Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues] in a record store, back when you could listen to records right there in the store. Right then and there, I went out and traded my electric guitar and amplifier for an acoustical guitar, a flat-top Gibson… [That album was] just something vital and personal. I learned all the songs on that record. It was her first and the songs were- ‘Mule Skinner’, ‘Waterboy’, ‘Jack of Diamonds’, ‘‘Buked and Scorned‘.

A rare ‘tube of Waterboy follows.

I recently signed up at the web site of “Good Old Days” magazine so I could enter requests on their “Want Ad” pages. I’ve asked folks to tell me the things they remember from their childhoods. So far I’ve heard from Natasha, Nora Lee, and Sue. I find it very interesting that they all had something to say about water.

I’m immediately reminded of an article I read some years ago concerning three generations of women who were asked which modern convenience they liked best. The youngest mentioned the microwave oven. Her mother cited the refrigerator. Grandma’s answer? Running water.

Indoor plumbing has become one of those things that we take for granted. Unless a child has been taken to a primitve camp ground, the words ‘outhouse’ or ‘privy’ would hold no meaning.

Natasha (please note that I’m using only the first names because I haven’t asked permission to use their full names) told me her family had a cistern on their back porch with a metal dipper hanging nearby. That dipper was the community drinking vessel. No one ever thought about the germs that might get passed from one thirsty family member to another. Come to think of it, that same dipper was probably used by many visitors as well, and nobody gave it a second thought.

Nora Lee told me that her Grandparents had a pump with a handle – that you actually had to “pump” up and down – to get the water. Her Grandma also had a metal dipper that was the universal ‘glass’ used by one and all. Then Nora Lee added that on the way to fishing at the lake her grandfather would stop by an old spring house. There was a glass there with yellow flowers… and they’d all drink from it. Only now does Nora Lee think about who else might have used that glass!

Finally, Sue shared her memories. When her family visited her grandfather in Kentucky, they would always be guaranteed of two things. First, they would load up in the truck and head to town, and papa would buy two things, a watermelon, and some grape Nehi soda. When they got back to his house they would take both items down the hill and put them in the ice cold spring.

He had a wire cage type thing built and tied to a tree and that is where he kept his items that needed to stay cold in the summer time.

Then Sue added that if they needed water, her mother would send them down the hill again with a pail and a dipper – with the strict orders to get the water BEFORE they played in the creek. So many times she and her siblings got a hickory switch taken to them for bringing a pail of muddy water back up the hill. Obviously they played first!

Buckets of water and metal dippers reminded me of an experience I’d long ago forgetten. When I was thirteen or fourteen years old, my older brothers were coaches for a sandlot football team – the Southwest Dukes. I’d go to the practices to watch, but somehow my watching evolved into becoming the team’s waterboy.

Prior to the start of each game, I had to locate a source of water and fill two two-and-a-half-gallon buckets. Then, armed with a metal dipper for each bucket, I was ready. Whenever there was a time-out or injury on the field, I’d run out and let the players take turns using the dippers. I’ll never forget the smell of the huddle – a combination of wet leather and sweating bodies. Yuck!

Being a young teenager who weighed no more than a hundred and twenty pounds, running with full buckets of water somehow always got the bottoms of my pants legs wet. There was one particular game in late November in Pittsburgh where my pants legs actually froze solid.

Such things didn’t bother me because our team kept on winning and finished the season as champions of our league! Then we had a banquet. I was thrilled simply to be invited to a fancy dinner. I watched proudly as each player and coach was awarded a beautiful red jacket with a big white “D” on the left breast. Then I was absolutely flabbergasted when they called my name and I was given a much smaller version of the same jacket.

I wore that jacket proudly until it no longer fit. I don’t think Gunga Din ever had a prouder moment than when I donned that jacket for the very first time.

We would like to like Adam Sandler. He seems to be a funny fellow. The trailer for this, his most recent comedy, made us laff ‘n’ laff. But by renting Zohan we put ourselves in the role of Charlie Brown trusting once again in Lucy to hold the football for him, and we fell with a thud.

We should have known better. There was a clear pattern. We made it through maybe 45 minutes of The Wedding Singer; through twenty or so of The Waterboy. The one about the firemen who pretend to be gay took only about ten minutes before we abruptly changed our evening’s entertainment — to some old Friends episodes, I think. But Zohan wins the Instant Aversion prize. We couldn’t have watched three minutes before we were certain the film was too stupid to be enjoyed without having previously suffered a major head trauma.

It was too awful to even watch so much of it as would have been necessary to capture a frame to illustrate this post. All I could bear was to photograph the Netflix envelope. If you are wise you will let this be as close as you get to it.

Last year you said you were no longer going to carry the water for the GOP? Remember? Well, you are!

Last year you said you were no longer going to carry the water for the GOP? Remember? Well, you are! Every day (and this ad infinitum) you disparage Barrack Obama you are doing the lazy GOP’s water carrying. Limbaugh, you are OC on Obama. What are you so afraid of? Regardless of what your limited capabilities will generate, you will stop nothing. Why don’t you use your airtime for useful projects such as adequate oil supplies, deficit reduction, restoring America to its’ former Constitutional standards, and helping real people in need? Particularly, you should have helped field a good viable GOP presidential candidate! Chuck Norris is doing something about America’s problems everyday in his columns, and in his actions, and all you can do is bust on Obama, man are you lazy! Too much work to actually do something useful Limbaugh? Everyday your entire rhetoric is Obama based, what’s the point? And, why do you continue the Obama vilification when America is in deep financial doo-doo? Limbaugh are you even cognizant of your surroundings? Are you aware of the economical crises America is in? Fed Chief Bernanke says this, and you regurgitate Obama every day all day?

Fed-chief Bernanke again: “The economy continues to face numerous difficulties, including ongoing strains in financial markets, declining house prices, a softening labor market, and rising prices of oil, food, and some other commodities. . . . The deteriorating performance of subprime mortgages in the United States triggered turbulence in domestic and international financial markets as investors became markedly less willing to bear credit risks of any type. . . . Many financial markets and institutions remain under considerable stress, in part because the outlook for the economy, and thus for credit quality, remains uncertain.” Australia and New Zealand are facing crisis in their economy and all you can do is make fun of Obama’s gaps between words? Limbaugh, have you ever listened to your stuttering self? You should talk!

President Bush signs a massive housing and mortgage relief bill into law and you bust on Obama’s note in the West Wall? This bill was originally facing the Presidential veto, but the seriousness of the economy pressured Bush to sign it against his original veto intentions. Limbaugh, you keep indicating the Capitalistic process and its’ supply and demand adjustments. You keep saying the economy is good and it’s only making some necessary changes. Oh really? Where do you dwell, a place that has a sand pile so you can put your head into it every night? But with you Limbaugh, it’s Obama this and Obama that continuously, you are beginning to fetishise on Obama, something we should know Limbaugh?

When a man knows to do good and does it not, to that man it is a sin. You have a good pulpit everyday, but you are misusing it to offer up vituperations against Obama. Limbaugh, where were you when the GOP selected this dido McCain? Where was your intense prolix of this loon? You should be screaming at the top of your lungs for a better candidate from the GOP. No, instead you waste your time on nonsensical diatribes against the Democratic Party’s candidate. Limbaugh, to whom more is given, more is required. Tis a shame! BTW! What are you going to talk about tomorrow, the next day, and the day after? I know, let me guess, Obama! Limbaugh, you’re becoming a bit of a dido yourself. Hey little water boy bring that water around, if you don’t like your job, set that water bucket down…
