LAKE OZARK, MO. (KMOX) - Two beaches are closed to swimmers celebrating the last weekend of summer,

LAKE OZARK, MO. (KMOX) - Two beaches are closed to swimmers celebrating the last weekend of summer, one in Northwest Missouri and one at the Lake of the Ozarks.

The Grand Glaize Beach at Lake of the Ozarks and the beach at Watkins Mill north of Kansas City will both be closed this weekend due to high bacteria levels, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

But the DNR’s Rene Bungart says not to be concerned because the overall water quality at the Lake of the Ozarks is tested and is safe.

She says the high bacteria at the two closed beaches could be from recent rain water bringing contaminated soil down to the beach. Bungart says overall, the Lake is still testing at safe levels for boating and swimming.

She says to be safe, its always a good idea to shower after swimming in the Lake.

@wojcik

Okay here’s another example of absolutely shameless self promotion. If you’re adventuring into the lands of Jesse James and the Watkins Mill Museum and the great lake nearby then you might want to stock up on chow at the Fourth Street Deli which is part of the Rock Inn enterprise in Kearney, MO. The Deli offers a great selection of meats and cheeses–and ice cream bars (oh yeah, vice time)–for a picnic at the lake. Oh and since it’s an “inn” there are rooms to rent in the bed & breakfast fashion. Actually you really could just hang at the inn for breakfast, lunch and dinner because, yeah, you guessed it, there is something called the Rock Inn Cafe. Beware the desserts–yeah–um–way too many yummies for anyone’s tummy. While my favorite food combination of sauteed mashed potato pierogies, Krakus ham, sweet gerkins, and chocolate ice cream is NOT part of their menu–and more’s the pity for me–(yes, in the past I have yapped about this food vice of mine)–they do offer a much more midwestern flavored menu for their all you can eat buffet, homestyle pies and cakes and…yeahhhhhhh you better swim at the lake and hike all over Jesse James’s place.

Here comes the shameless self promotion part of this blog feature. In an effort to visually cool off and refresh the folks the Cafe feeds, my photographic water-scapes are now chilling on the Rock Cafe’s walls. Yes, you can enjoy the cool green grassy waters of the Agate Fossil Bed in Nebraska; Limantour Beach at Point Reyes, California; Line Creek, MO; and Rush Creek, MO.

So if you’re venturing into the nearby haunts of the James’ Boys or the Mill or seeking some water fun at the lake stop at the Inn and take a gander at the prepared and raw foods offered by its very friendly owners, the Rock Family, and their stomach stuffing staff.

Rock in to the Rock Inn at –> http://www.kearneyrockinn.com/index.php

–oh the inn’s site has links to the Mill, James, lakes and other area ‘attractions’….even Worlds of Fun–if riding fast rollercoasters is part of your head game.

ps. 10 reasons why Krakus ham should be one of your food vices too!

The Vikings have had a successful start to their 2010 campaign with dual meet wins over Watkins Mill

The Vikings have had a successful start to their 2010 campaign with dual meet wins over Watkins Mill and Churchill. The Whitman grapplers came away with a 79-0 victory against Watkins Mill. Garnering victories for the Vikes were Juniors Andrew Follmann, Alex Hysong, Ned Daryoush, and Sophomore Brad Taylor. Also winning in his first Varsity match was Senior Thomas Oudinot at 171. Follmann, Hysong, and Daryoush were able to secure falls in each of their matches. The rest of the Viking starting lineup received forfeits. One week later the Vikings took on a talented Churchill Bulldog team. Whitman wrestled well and earned a hard fought 49-16 wins. Earning wins for the Vikes were Seniors Sawyer and Dylan Symington, Jordan Tritell, Taylor Leighton, and Danny Lee. Also winning were Ben D’Elia, Eric Harder, Mike Harder, Andrew Follmann, and Ned Daryoush. Earning pins for the Vikes were Mike Harder, Leighton, Lee, and Daryoush.

Sandwiched in between those two duals was the annual trip up to Derwood for Magruder’s Mad Mats tournament. The Vikings had an impressive run, albeit a bit of a disappointing ending, in the tough 17 team tournament. The Whitman wrestlers each earned at least one win to contribute to a total of 217 team points and a 2nd place finish. Whitman placed nine total wrestlers in the top three of their respective weight class and ten wrestlers in the top five overall. Whitman also advanced six wrestlers to the finals, however only came away with one victory. That lone victory in the finals was an impressive performance by Senior Taylor Leighton with a first period pin. Coming up just short in the finals were Seniors Danny Lee and Sawyer Symington as well as Juniors Andrew Follmann, Mike Harder, and Ned Daryoush. All of the Viking grapplers wrestled admirably all weekend long and each individual contributed to the total team effort.

As you know, COG-RA, Portable Communication Devices, lets secondary school (Grades 6-12) students have cell phones, iPods, etc. while they are on MCPS property and when they attend MCPS-sponsored activities but not until the end of the official school day.

On June 9, 2009, the Board of Education asked MCPS to do a pilot test in several schools to explore the possible use of cell phones during lunches. It was questioned whether allowing students to use their cell phones during lunch periods would cause harm or disrupt class time by tempting students to use their cell phones during class. The Board decided the best way to find out was to do a field test allowing students at two or three high schools with different lunch schedules to use cell phones during their lunch times.

MCPS Staff will collect data on students’ usage of the devices during the lunches as well as attempted usage during instructional time. Comments will also be collected from students, staff, and administrators.

The field test will be done at the start of the second semester (January 26, 2010) and will continue until May 1. A recommendation will be made by June 2010 and the Board of Education will vote on it sometime after that. The outcome of these schools will determine whether or not this test should be expanded to all high schools. If it is successful, the use of cell phones during lunch would be expanded to all high schools.
