My last theremin involved a small speaker. Now I’ve replaced the speaker with my PC, using processing to pick up the values from the SRF05 ultrasound sonar thingy and play different notes accordingly – which gives multiple possibilities and far better sounds.

So to start with check out my previous theremin, the circuit is the same except for removing the speaker and the Arduino code now prints values to the serial port instead of outputing directly to a speaker. The only thing that I’m doing here that is really new is using the minim libary for processing, built by this chap (thankyou). What this allows us is to assign a sound file to a variable in processing and then gives us functions to start/stop the sound.

All sound effects are MP3 files.

I had the good fortune to use the Edirol R-09HR wav/mp3 recorder for some time (firmware 2.0). Of course this machine has been reviewed earlier so i will not repeat the previous conclusions but i have some interesting findings that i did not read about before. First the volume of the built in speaker is low. Putting the volume at 100 does not really make it better. You have to put the speaker against your ear to hear anything. Headphones on the other hand can be set very loud. So don’t expect to fill the room with sound with this speaker. You have to find some amplified speakers to do that.

When you change the batteries some of the settings resetted themselves, at least on my machine. The file naming was reset to the default instead of the date as the filename. But the second time i changed the battery my settings were preserved. Strange but since i did not use the machine for some time, the internal? battery or capacitor ran out of power? But i could be wrong.The first time i started using the recorder i had to set the time. The second time when chancing the batteries i was not asked to set the time.

The remote control worked nicely, but i got some problems with the reception. Earlier (in some review video during a convention) it was mentioned this remote worked by radio. Well it does not. It used a infrared LED. So you really need a good line of sight to control the recorder from a distance.

Lastly this recorder can not stand “up”. The bottom is too rounded and the recorder will fall over when you try to set it upright. Too bad, but that’s probably why Roland is selling this thing.

Overal i am very impressed with the responsiveness, menu usability and built quality. It is worth each and every penny.

Winamp punya fitur untuk mengubah-ubah format audio, termasuk mengubah MP3 jadi WAV. Kenapa MP3 malah dijadikan WAV? Buat keperluan edit, kadang kita butuh format WAV.
Nah, bikin WAV dari MP3 hanya perlu sedikit konfigurasi. Begini konfigurasinya.

Konfigurasi
1. Jalankan Winamp dan keluarkan “Winamp Preferences” dengan menekan tombol [Ctrl] + [P] di keyboard.
2. Klik [Plug-ins] di menu bagian kanan. Tampillah beberapa plugin yang sudah terbundel bersama Winamp. Ada 2 plugin yang akan kita gunakan, yaitu waveOut output dan Nullsoft Disk Writer plugin.
3. Pilihlah [waveOut output] dan klik tombol [Configure]. Setelah kotak “waveOut settings” tampil, pilih peranti yang akan digunakan di “Device” lalu beri tanda centang pada [Alt]. Aktifkan “method (slow)” agar saat proses konversi berlangsung suara dapat didengarkan. Simpan pengaturan dan tutup boks ini dengan mengklik tombol [OK].
4. Berikutnya kita tentukan lokasi penyimpanan file hasil konversi. Klik [Nullsoft Disk Writer] dan klik kembali tombol [Configure]. Pilih lokasi penyimpanan dengan cara mengklik tombol [Output directory]. Aktifkan [Kill null samples at the beginning] agar suara kosong di awal tidak disertakan. Simpan pengaturan dan tutup boks ini dengan mengklik tombol [OK].
5. Konfigurasi telah selesai dilakukan. Jendela “Winamp Preferences” dapat ditutup. Klik tombol [Close].

Konversi
1. Masukkan semua file MP3 yang formatnya ingin diubah ke dalam playlist Winamp. Klik tombol [Play] untuk memutar lagu sekaligus memulai proses konversi.
2. Setelah seluruh file selesai dimainkan, bukalah jendela Windows Explorer. Periksa hasilnya di folder yang telah Anda tentukan.
