If you haven’t discovered the Internet Archive yet, you’re in for a treat. Located at www.archive.org, not only does this amazing non-profit host the Wayback Machine (c) (basically an archive of webpages from the past), but it is also home to some amazing live concerts and interesting historical video footage.

I recently discovered that, in addition to everything else the Internet Archive offers, the site hosts music and audio files for free, thus creating an amazing open source sound project for all the world to enjoy.

I tested out and contributed to the service by uploading two of my tunes, which you can listen to on my Musical Excursions page (Here).

I encourage you to check out archive.org and experience the wonder of a media library at your fingertips.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

This is the dilemma my good friend, Cheryl Malandros, experienced this morning and I thought I could

This is the dilemma my good friend, Cheryl Malandros, experienced this morning and I thought I could give you some helpful hints if it happened to you.

A lot of authors are blogging on the free blog platforms – mainly Blogger and WordPress. The problem with this is that anyone at any time can declare your blog offensive just for the heck of it. Didn’t know that? Sure enough! It happens all the time. The only real inconvenience of this is that you have to wait a few days for it to come back, that is if the mighty gods of WordPress and Blogger deem you innocent.

Cheryl was innocent this morning when she clicked over to her blog to find out WordPress had suspended her blog. Sometimes we don’t know why they deem us offensive, but Cheryl did. It seems someone who had registered the same blog name with a .com had found Cheryl and was mighty upset she was using “her name” and was taking business from her. Cheryl doesn’t run a business at her children’s book blog, The Kid’s Book Connection, but obviously, someone else is.

The woman became irate even though Cheryl tried to explain to her the difference in urls – the woman had a .com and she had a wordpress.com and we’re all presuming this is the reason why Cheryl’s blog was suspended this morning. Of course, WordPress will see it’s not offensive and turn her back on, but what do you do when this happens?

One, you wait, but while you’re waiting, there’s a few things you can do to access your blog that is no longer accessed by its url.

If your blog is old enough, you can find the archives at a nifty site called The Wayback Machine. Unfortunately, the blog was too new for this so another trick I use is to put your url in google and when the url shows up, click on “cache.”

When I clicked on “cache,” I found her blog and what was on the first page. If I wanted to find more, I could probably put “The Kid’s Book Connection” and “the author’s name” in search and the url might come up. I would then click on “cache” and voila there it is.

But the thing that gets me most about all this is that all of this should have been unnecessary. Cheryl’s blog is not offensive; it just is the same name as this other person’s blog who is trying to make money to support her kids as she told Cheryl. Cheryl was sympathetic, but how was she to know this when she picked out the name? All she did was put it in the box at WordPress and WordPress tells you it’s available. Simple. She never would have thought someone would be out to get her like that.

The unfortunate thing is that if you are paying for a domain name and hosting it yourself, you’re going to not be able to stop the free blogging platforms out there who will be registering the same name simply because the url is different. The only thing you can do is go into as many free blogging platforms and register the name so that no one else can use it. I think this is a bit going over the top, but if you’re the kind of person who wants the name all to yourself, that’s the only way you can do it.

I’m sure Cheryl will recover her blog, but if it happens to you, try these easy methods to at least get a few of your archives back. All I have to say is, thank God for Google.

Have you seen this craziness? For those who’ve never heard of DigZine: it’s a “hac

Have you seen this craziness? For those who’ve never heard of DigZine: it’s a “hacker” zine similar to Phrack. This is what puzzles me. Phrack.org hasn’t been closed down. So why DigZine?

This ought to be a freedom of speech/free press issue. 2600 Hacker Quarterly has survived as long as it has largely because it’s a printed magazine – the printed press is afforded protection by the Constitution. But the US authorities are comfortable about persecuting webzines. It’s clear to me that this is wrong. There’s no real difference between a regular, printed-on-paper magazine and a webzine. So they should both be protected from over-zealous cops. Unfortunately, that isn’t how the world works. And if a website is on servers located in the USA, that website has virtually no protection from the evil morons in power.

Incidentally, if you scroll down to the bottom of that web page, you’ll see your ip address and some rubbish about how the Dept Homeland Security will log your ip and investigate you. Then, at the end it says:

Be aware that disguising or concealing IP information shall be considered a criminal violation of section 814 of the USA PATRIOT Act. Should you suspect that your IP address and host have been improperly recorded, contact a DHS representative immediately.

This is a blatant violation of the right to privacy. Using an anonymous proxy or some other anonymiser to protect your privacy is illegal? The US government has got right into the role of Big Brother. You don’t need a tin foil hat to realiize this.

But what tips this over into absurdity is the fact that any idiot with a web browser can view Digizine.com and its archive of seditious literature. All you need to do is go to the Wayback Machine. This is an archive of the internet: snapshots of what the internet used to look like. You go to the Wayback page and type in the URL of the site you’re interested in – say, Digizine.com – then click the button marked “Take Me Back!” This brings you to a list of dates when snapshots of the site in question were taken. In the case of Digizine.com, you can see that snapshots were taken most recently in 2007. So, you choose a date from the list and click it. In this case 8 Jan 2007. And this takes you to an archived copy of the website on that date.

So, we can visit this evil site despite the DHS’s best efforts to censor it. We can view the archive of the DigiZine e-zine and read all that treacherous content that the US govt wants to protect us from! (There’s a link to the magazine archive here.)

But if you take the time to view the e-zine, you’re gonna wonder why in hell the DHS wants to block this site! The last issue was released in 2006. And the content is, on the whole, a lot tamer than what you can find elsewhere. This censorship makes no sense. Then again, when do any of the DHS’s actions make any sense?

Thing is, the content of Digizine.com is irrelevant. The point is, just about any website that the DHS want to “protect” us from can be accessed via the Wayback Machine. The US govt wants to keep us ignorant? No sweat, information always finds a way out of bondage. The internet is based on the idea that information wants to be free. And archive.org is a shining example of that freedom!

Digizine.com censored by Dept Homeland Security

As I’m sure all of you know Patch 3.3 is currently on the PTR. Once again it seems that Blizza

As I’m sure all of you know Patch 3.3 is currently on the PTR. Once again it seems that Blizzard is cranking out a steady stream of content and doing it faster than ever. After all Patch 3.2 only just arrived on August 4th.

I was curious to see if Blizzard is on a faster track for delivering content for this expansion than they were with the Burning Crusade, and if so just how fast?

Today I’m going crank up the Wayback Machine and compare Burning Crusade’s patch releases with Wrath of the Lich King’s.

I only focused on the major patch releases and not the minor ones. I also know that patch 3.0 was released on the October 15, 2008, but decided not to include that. As you can see, however, the length of time between patches for this expansion is not that dramatically different from what was done in Burning Crusade.

Now I don’t think there’s any argument that the amount of content Blizzard has been pushing out for the expansion pack is greater than what they did for TBC. Every one of Wrath’s patches has been similar to what we saw in 2.4. From that perspective Blizzard has certainly improved.

The big question now is what’s next after 3.3 and when will it happen? While we can certainly expect a few 3.3.x patches, I’m pretty sure that Blizzard isn’t looking to do a 3.4.

It wouldn’t at all surprise me if patch 3.3 were to be released right around the holidays. If the expansion were to be released in November 2010 (which fits in with the Blizzard time line), then we’d be at almost a whole year with just patch 3.3. That just seems way to long an interval to go without a major content patch.

Let’s speculate with some arbitrary dates. If patch 3.3 were to drop on December 15, 2009 and Cataclysm were released on November 9, 2010 (both Tuesdays of course) then that’s 329 days between major content patches which is about 98 days longer than patch 2.4 and the release of Wrath. Now maybe Arthas will be that tough, but I doubt it.

So maybe Cataclysm beta in February 2010 with release sometime in June? I’d be happy with that.

Happy Hunting!

P.S. – patch release dates were taken from wowwiki and not gathered through any official Blizzard source.

“Back at the SVU media area, a tech woman tells Benson and Stabler she could not find Emily on Tasty Sugar, and the detectives think since she was on their earlier that the web site took it down as if they were trying to hide something. The tech woman says it is not gone forever, and asks if they ever heard of the wayback machine and Benson says only the one that Sherman and Mr. Peabody used. The woman says this is no cartoon. It takes digit snapshots of the web to compile archives. She manages to find the site, and Benson says they can get Emily’s measurements from the morgue, she wants to know whom Emily was dating and decides to call ADA Paxton. But Stabler notices there is a note on the web page that says “Shy? I also double date with my BFF Pamela.” He tells the tech woman to click on Pamela’s name. Pamela’s video says she is looking for rich experiences. Stabler thinks Pamela can give them answers faster than they can get a warrant.”

Main article: Internet Archive

The Internet Archive has capitalized on the popular use of the term “Wayback Machine,” and uses this name for its service that makes archives of the World Wide Web.[13] This service allows users to see archived versions of web pages of the past, what the Internet Archive calls a “three dimensional index”. Millions of websites and their associated data (images, source code, documents, etc.) are saved in a gigantic database. The service can be used to see what previous versions of websites used to look like, to grab original source code from websites that may no longer be directly available, or to visit websites that no longer even exist. Not all websites are available, however, because many website owners choose to exclude their sites.

The use of the term “Wayback Machine” in the context of the Internet Archive has become so common that “Wayback Machine” and “Internet Archive” are almost synonymous. This usage too occurs in popular culture, e.g., in the television show Law and Order: Criminal Intent (“Legacy”, first run Aug. 3, 2008), an extra playing a computer tech uses the “Wayback Machine” to find an archive of a student’s Facebook style website.

The greatest part of this activity was seeing the change from the static to the dynamic web pages that we see today. Pages contained small gifs and text and hyperlinks for a couple of reasons, bandwidth was limited mostly to dial up and the fact that there was little choice but to use html at the time. With creation of javascript, css, php, flash and sql, you suddenly have all of these tools at hand that make for richer possibilities.

Get onto the Wayback machine and go…..

http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

I added these comments to the Discussion Board in reponse to Sky’s question:

How are the first webpages different from webpages today? What do you think accounts for these differences?

One of the biggest differences I have noticed in pages then and now, is the interaction that pages offer in terms of customization and personalization.

I’m not sure if Yahoo was the first company to do this, but even back in early 1999, they were offering an option to create a personalized experience, something that Google didnt offer until late 2005.

One other big difference is that site content generally had to be managed on static html pages and the user was required to “leave” the home page to view other content on the site. With the use of databases, sql and php content is generated on the page you visit as required.

It would be interesting to explain to someone using the web 15 years ago that the pages they are visiting today don’t actually exist only the content does.

Very cool

The images don’t carry over when I access it from work, but then again I’m on a network with many, many proxies, so your results may differ.

This is mainly an FYI for all the writers who wrote material for the site for those three-four years, in case they don’t have backups or in case something Truly Awful™ happened to their hard drive, email, or other such storage device.

Looks like a lot of it is retrievable as of this writing, just needs reformatting in Word for your portfolio if you copy/paste from Web. I can help with that if needed, just holla.

I was feeling kind of envious as I read Tristero quoting himself as having been right about Iraq bef

I was feeling kind of envious as I read Tristero quoting himself as having been right about Iraq before the war began on March 20, 2003. My curse has always been that my earlier incarnations of Norwegianity now exist only on stored databases I have neither the time, knowledge or patience to open. But Norwegianity didn’t start until February of 2004. Before then I was blogging at City Pages.

Therein lays another problem: those web pages were pulled down when City Pages upgraded their web architecture. Then it hit me. I still have all those posts in html format because I wrote and laid them out in Dreamweaver before posting them. A few variances (I didn’t update my work copies if I made a correction after uploading a post) but pretty much the same as what ran at City Pages.

Sadly, I didn’t start guest posting at Steve Perry’s warblog, Bush Wars, until June, three months after the war began, and whole thing didn’t start until a month after the war started but I’m sure the surveillance tapes would show I was grumbling long before that.

Still, YBOB (Your Blog of Blogs), the morning aggregator I wrote as TCB (Twin Cities Babelogue), had a few nuggets that made my take on Bush-Cheney’s war of aggression pretty obvious. I’m going to start running some excerpts and hopefully some of the links will still be good.

Freedom to loot

TMiss joins Steve Perry in writing about the war’s aftermath. You know, little things like tens of thousands of anti-American protesters taking to the streets, “freedom to loot,” and the report card on the Patriot Missile’s performance in GWII. Rummy gossip here.

[April 19, 2003]

And yes, every single one of those links is dead because they’re all to defunct City Pages links. I thought I had all The Mississippifarian posts, but apparently I composed them on the fly using the blogging software Karl Pearson-Cater picked (Radio?).

Not as good as Tristero’s vintage post, but I did close that day’s TCB post with an apt quote.

Quote of the day

“The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. You may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish truth. You may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate, nor establish love. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”

-

Back to 2003. TCB also recorded in real time all the silliness and ribaldry of the world of internet which was really taking off in ‘03. Better yet, some of these links still work!

[We're still not linking to The Penis Blog Project, but that doesn't mean it's not making waves.]

That link works, but if you click it you find the link to The Penis Blog Project has, sadly, become a porn site. Lots of penises, but no Penis Blog Project. That made me sad. I was kind of curious since I have almost no memory of hardly anything from 2003, so I googled and I found The Penis Blog Project!

More sadly, that page’s link also goes to the aforementioned porn site. Thank god for the Wayback Machine. One 2003 link is all you’ll need (or find interesting). 2006 and 2007 just show the evolution of a dead link into a porn gateway.

Not as illuminating as I’d hoped, but because I’ve mentioned The Penis Blog Project maybe someone will pull this page up while using Google on a related search. Someone who actually remembers wtf The Penis Blog Project was about, or at least maybe someone who’ll take the time to bullshit something plausible in the comments.

We can only hope.

And yes, I’m almost positive I did links to vagina stuff, too.

[Dangerous stuff, that. If you don't link to vaginas, "they" get mad, but if you link to them too often, "they" get even madder. I walked the line, to the best of my recollection.]

Using IP Instead of URL

This depends on the software/application used. Sometimes blocked sites are stored as a list of URLs (eg. www.yahoo.com, www.donwload.com,etc) and typing the IP instead of the URL might sometimes work. In a local computer, doing a ping domain.com command in Command Prompt (Mac users use Terminal) will return you the IP address. You can also do it online via www.whatsmyip.org

Redirection with Short URL service

Sometimes the URL you intend to browse might be ban, but converting them to another a shorter URL with short URL services might just help you to bypass the settings.

Here’s 2 Short URL service we’ve previously mentioned – MooURL, SnipURL

Google Cache

Search engines like Google and Yahoo cache webpages and these cached pages are stored in search engines themselves, which likely will be added to the blocked list. Click on the ‘cache’ will bring you to a cache version of the page, as updated as how Google caches it.

Internet Archive – Wayback Machine

Wayback Machine is a internet service that periodically keeps a copy of almost all websites in the Internet way from the date they’re started. Clicking on the latest copy of what Wayback Machine have should be somewhat similar to the real site. Another way to access blocked sites via caches.

Anonymous Surfing

Some site allows you to take advantage of their proxy or domain to surf other sites as anonymous. Here’s 90+ proxy websites we’ve previously mentioned.

More anonymous surfing services: 95+ Proxy Websites To Access Blocked Websites

Use Proxy in Browsers

There are tons of sites out there that distributes free proxies of almost any country. Here’s an example. Check out the following methods on how/where to insert proxies in your web browsers.

Proxy Surfing – Firefox

Under Advanced tab, select Network tab, then click inside Connection Settings. Select Manual proxy configuration, put proxy under HTTP proxy.

//
//

Go to Tools -> Internet Options. Select Connections tab. Click into LAN Settings, check Proxy Server. Insert your proxy URL inside Address.

Bypass with Translations services

Online translation services like AltaVista BabelFish, Google Translate allows you to translate a website from one language to another and display the translated results on their own page. The trick here is to enter the URL (website you’re blocked), retranslate it even if you don’t need to and let Google or AltaVista fetch you the content.

Subscribe to RSS Feed

This might not work for all sites, but if the site you intended to visit provides RSS feeds, you can subscribe and read it with a RSS reader, or have it regularly send the contents to your email

Retrieve web pages via Email

Web2Mail is a free service that sends websites you want to read right into your inbox. All you need to do is send an email to www@web2mail.com with the URL as subject title.
