Vietnam moved a step closer to its goal of reaching middle-income status by 2010, with approval by the World Bank (WB) of the first loan to Vietnam from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) on December 21. 

The newly approved loan is a US$ 500 million development policy loan that supports a program of public investment reforms in Vietnam.

“World Bank support Vietnam to build on the Government’s determination to strengthen its public investment processes,” said WB Country Director for Vietnam Victoria Kwakwa

The loan, the largest ever made by the WB to Vietnam, is the first of two single-tranche operations that will support the country’s stimulus program in response to the economic crisis.  And by supporting a series of public investment reforms to improve the quality of public investment, the loan should enhance the impact of Vietnam’s stimulus package as well as its subsequent public investments that are important to sustaining Vietnam’s high economic growth.

Over the last two years, Vietnam has experienced a succession of shocks – starting with massive capital inflows in 2007, a surge in commodity prices in 2008, and export declines as a result of the global economic crisis. Stimulus measures adopted in late 2008 and supplemented in early 2009 contributed to strong growth, now projected to be 5.2 percent for 2009.

IBRD is the low-interest lending arm of the WB aimed at reducing poverty in middle-income and creditworthy poorer countries.  Until now, WB support to Vietnam has come from the International Development Association (IDA), which provides credit and grants to the world’s poorest countries.

“The loan is supported by a strong World Bank program that builds on the Government’s determination to strengthen its public investment processes,” said WB Country Director for Vietnam Victoria Kwakwa.

The areas strengthened under the reform program include environmental screening of publicly funded infrastructure projects, environmental management, project preparation and appraisal, procurement, public financial management, the regulatory framework for private participation in infrastructure and monitoring, and evaluation.

The loan approval builds on the recent Country Partnership Strategy Progress Report, which takes stock of progress made in implementing the five-year Country Partnership Strategy that will conclude in June 2011 and introduces some adjustments for the remainder of the period. 

These adjustments include the introduction of IBRD borrowing, at an indicative level up to $1.7 billion during the next year and a half; and support for further strengthening natural disaster response, climate change adaptation and mitigation, a framework for public-private partnerships for infrastructure, higher education reform, and facilitation of technology innovation.

Trong bài ohát biểu ngày hôm qua 28/9, Chủ tịch WB nói rằng sức mạnh của đồng đôla Mỹ trong tương lai sẽ phụ thuộc vào việc đưa ra các quyết định kinh tế tốt về một số vấn đề khó khăn như thâm hụt ngân sách sách chính phủ và tỷ lệ lãi suất.

Ông Robert Zoellick nói cuộc khủng hoảng kinh tế toàn cầu đang dịch chuyển quyền lực kinh tế sang các nền kinh tế mới nổi như Trung Quốc và Ấn Độ.

Ông cho rằng quyết định biến nhóm G-20 trở thành diễn đàn kinh tế toàn cầu đầu đàn là một “bước khởi đầu tốt đẹp”.   Nhưng ông Zoellick cũng nói rằng khoảng 160 quốc gia khác, đặc biệt là các nước nghèo nhất, cần phải được xem xét tới khi các quyết định được đưa ra.

Ông Zoellick cũng cho rằng Trung Quốc sẽ trở lại mạnh mẽ sau cuộc khủng hoảng tài chính mới nhất, nhưng đối mặt với các bất ổn lớn trong tương lai gần.

(GiaVang.com.vn – Giá vàng Việt Nam và Thế Giới) – Giá vàng trong nước tăng bình quân 2.000 đồng/chỉ trong khi giá vàng thế giới đã tạm dừng đợt giảm giá của tuần trước. Giới đầu tư vàng quốc tế đang chờ đợi những thông tin kinh tế quan trọng được công bố tiếp theo để quyết định nên mua hay bán.

Vàng miếng các thương hiệu trong nước sáng nay mở cửa phổ biến ở mức giá gần 2.210.000 đồng/chỉ (mua vào) và xấp xỉ 2.215.000 đồng/chỉ (bán ra). So với giá áp dụng chiều qua, giá Vàng trong nước hiện đã tăng từ 1.000-3.000 đồng/chỉ tùy thương hiệu.

So với giá Vàng thế giới quy đổi (chưa cộng thêm thuế nhập khẩu 1% và chi phí gia công khoảng 3.000 đồng/chỉ), giá vàng trong nước hiện đang cao hơn giá vàng thế giới chừng 35.000 đồng/lượng.

Vàng SBJ loại 5 chỉ và 1 lượng giao dịch tại hệ thống Ngân hàng Sacombank trên toàn quốc mở cửa ở mức 2.209.000 đồng/chỉ (mua vào) và 2.213.000 đồng/chỉ (bán ra).

Tại Thị trường Hà Nội, Công ty Vàng bạc đá quý Phú Quý (PQJ) niêm yết giá vàng SJC ở mức tương ứng là 2.208.000 đồng/chỉ và 2.214.000 đồng/chỉ. Vàng SJC tại Thị trường Tp.HCM có giá 2.206.000 đồng/chỉ và 2.011.000 đồng/chỉ.

Thị trường vàng vật chất trong nước đã trở lại với không khí trầm lắng sau một thời gian ngắn chứng kiến sự cải thiện trong khối lượng giao dịch khi kỷ lục về giá liên tục được thiết lập thời gian qua. Sự vững vàng của mốc giá 22 triệu đồng mỗi lượng vàng đang khiến các nhà đầu tư có tâm lý “không đi đâu mà vội” trong việc mua bán.

Giới kinh doanh vàng cho biết, do hoạt động cưới hỏi đã bắt đầu vào mùa, vàng trang sức đang tiêu thụ tốt và là một “mảng sáng” trên thị trường vàng hiện nay.

Trong bối cảnh nhập khẩu vàng chưa được cấp phép trở lại, nhu cầu thu mua vàng nguyên liệu trong nước để phục vụ cho việc chế tác nữ trang cũng đang khá cao. Đây là một lý do quan trọng neo giá vàng trong nước trên mức 22 triệu đồng/lượng.

Giá vàng khớp lệnh tại các sàn vàng tập trung sáng nay khá hẹp do giá vàng thế giới biến động yếu. Tại sàn vàng Eximbank, giá vàng khớp lệnh tính tới thời điểm 9h40 dao động trong khoảng 21,27-21,32 triệu đồng/lượng. Tính tới cùng thời điểm trên, giá vàng khớp lệnh tại sàn SBJ biến động trong vùng 21,30-21,44 triệu đồng/lượng.

Giá vàng giao ngay thế giới kết thúc phiên giao dịch đêm qua tại thị trường New York ở mức giá 991,5 USD/oz, giảm 0,2 USD/oz so với giá đóng cửa phiên liền trước. Trong khi đó, giá vàng đã chấm dứt đà giảm giá 4 phiên liên tục với mức tăng 2,5 USD/oz (0,3%), khép lại ngày giao dịch đầu tuần ở mức giá 994,1 USD/oz.

Tại thị trường châu Á phiên sáng nay, giá vàng giao ngay biến động yếu trong vùng 991-992 USD/oz.

Các chuyên gia tư vấn thị trường vàng và tiền tệ thuộc Ngân hàng Eximbank cho rằng, giá vàng đang ở giai đoạn rất nhạy cảm, vì đồng USD đang tăng giá so với một số đồng tiền mạnh như Euro hay Bảng Anh, nhưng lại đang giảm giá so với một số đồng tiền chủ chốt khác như Đôla Australia…

Giới đầu tư quốc tế còn chưa ngã ngũ được chuyện nên mua hay bán USD vì còn đang chờ những thông tin kinh tế tiếp theo phát đi từ Mỹ. Thị trường đã trở nên thận trọng hơn về triển vọng phục hồi kinh tế khi dữ liệu về số đơn đặt hàng lâu bền đáng thất vọng của nước này được công bố vào ngày thứ Sáu tuần trước, giúp vai trò “vịnh tránh bão” của đồng USD một lần nữa được phát huy.

Mặt khác, việc một số quan chức của Cục Dự trữ Liên bang Mỹ (FED) cho rằng FED cần sớm tăng lãi suất trở lại để chống nguy cơ lạm phát cũng là một nguồn lực hỗ trợ cho tỷ giá USD.

Trong ngày hôm qua, cả Chủ tịch Ngân hàng Thế giới (WB) Robert Zoellick và Chủ tịch Ngân hàng Trung ương châu Âu (ECB) Jean-Claude Trichet đều cho rằng, đồng USD vẫn là đồng tiền dự trữ quan trọng của thế giới, và đồng USD mạnh là yếu tố cần thiết ở thời điểm hiện nay để giữ ổn định kinh tế toàn cầu. Những nhận định này đã hỗ trợ đáng kể thêm cho tỷ giá “bạc xanh”.

Hiện tỷ giá USD vẫn đang là yếu tố quan trọng nhất chèo lái giá vàng thế giới. tỷ giá Euro/USD hiện đang đứng ở mức trên 1,46 USD tương đương 1 Euro.

Trong ngày hôm qua, không có một thông tin kinh tế đáng chú ý nào của Mỹ được đưa ra. Tuy nhiên, thị trường chứng khoán nước này đã phục hồi nhờ hai thương vụ mua bán lớn.

Tập đoàn Xerox cho biết đang có kế hoạch mua lại công ty dịch vụ máy tính Affiliated Computer Services (ACS) với giá 6,4 tỷ USD. Tập đoàn sản xuất nhựa, hóa chất và dược phẩm của Bỉ Solvay cho biết sẽ bán đơn vị sản xuất dược phẩm cho hãng Abbott Laboratories (Mỹ) với giá 4,5 tỷ Euro (6,6 tỷ USD).

Trong ngày hôm nay, thị trường Mỹ sẽ đón nhận thông tin về niềm tin tiêu dùng. Ngày mai, một thông tin quan trọng nữa sẽ được công bố là tình hình việc làm trong lĩnh vực phi nông nghiệp.

Nếu đây là những dữ liệu khả quan, tỷ giá USD có khả năng sẽ giảm trở lại, giúp giá vàng phục hồi. Tuy nhiên, nếu đây là những con số bất lợi cho thị trường chứng khoán, tỷ giá USD có thể sẽ tiếp tục đi lên, tạo thêm áp lực mất giá cho vàng.

Giá dầu thô đêm qua phục hồi nhờ phiên lên điểm trên thị trường chứng khoán Mỹ. Kết thúc phiên giao dịch tại New York, giá dầu thô ngọt nhẹ giao tháng 11 tăng 0,82 USD/thùng (1,2%) so với giá đóng cửa phiên liền trước, đạt 66,84 USD/thùng. Sáng nay, giá dầu tiếp tục đi lên và tiến sát mốc 67 USD/thùng.

Tỷ giá USD/VND do Ngân hàng Nhà nước công bố hôm nay là 16.993 VND/USD, giảm 1 VND/USD so với hôm qua. Tại Vietcombank, giá mua và bán USD cùng ở mức kịch trần +5% cho phép là 17.843 VND/USD.

Pigs breeding has contributed about 71% of total production value of livestock

On 10th December, State Bank of Vietnam and World Bank (WB) has signed credit agreement, through that the WB will grant 65,26 million USD credit, 79,03 million USD of investment for project “Competition and Food safety”

WB said that the main purpose of this project is the settlement of existing and risks which the households of pigs breeding has to face in cycle of fresh meat providing in order to enhance competitiveness for the livestock industry and control food safety in Vietnam.

According to Mrs Victoria Kwakwa, WB Director in Vietnam, this project will help households of pigs breeding sold the meat products of livestock under the conditions cleaner and safer, more meet the growing needs of the Vietnamese about food safety.

This project is deployed to mid-2015.

Currently Vietnam’s agricultural sector to hold 22% of GDP (breeding contribute about 6% to GDP). Pigs breeding contribute a high rate, approximately 71% of total production value of livestock.

Okay so I was in my comic shop today and was chatting with Eric about the newest Joss Whedon comic endeavor: Dr. Horrible.  He’d mentioned he’d never experienced the phenomenon , so I said I’d be happy to lend him my DVD.  Seems like a usual day at the House of Secrets.

Eric then asks if I saw the Nathan Fillion Green Lantern Trailer.  What is this!?  I wonder, and he YouTubes me up the best two minutes that make me wish it were a real movie.  It’s a fan made trailer, done surprisingly well and makes me wish that Hal Jordan would be brought to life like this.

Batman's been murdered and we need answers

This is another one of my favorite “fake” trailers that’s been circling around the net for a couple of years, called Grayson.  It’s about Robin, and what takes place after Batman is murdered.  It’s so beautifully put together and scripted it makes me wish I could see it–especially adding to it Babs, The Joker, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the lot.  The link, again, opens in a new window.

Want to know what I haven’t done in a while?  Blogged. I know that sounds stupid, but I  haven’t just sat down and written about  something totally random with no meaning  behind it. Now, the reason I don’t do that is  because that is more of a journal, which I  don’t want to do. I don’t like it when people  have a blog that they just use as a journal. It  annoys me a lot. If you want a journal, then  get a fucking journal!

So, what to talk about…well, There is  something that I have noticed is a repeating  theme in my life. I enjoy watching re-runs of  shows that are either no longer in  production, or are a few seasons into production. So, yes, there are the classic sitcoms, but more recently I have some too. The summer before high school I watched re-runs of Dawson’s Creek on TBS. They showed a 2 hour block at 9 am and then at 10 am. I watched every single episode from the first season, to the last. Which, to me, was disappointing. Does anyone else remember that? I now know that it was cancelled, which probably explains it all, and just makes me believe that they settled for that as a finale. I personally didn’t enjoy the fact that Michelle Williams’ character died. I didn’t like that one bit. Also, that Pacey’s older brother ended up with Jack. His brother wasn’t even gay until that episode. It was totally out of the blue. I know this because in the first season when Pacey was sleeping with his English teacher his brother was trying to date her.  I was less than satisfied.

Now, most recently, in my lack of schooling, and lack of working I had another one of these. One day I was channel surfing at the odd time in television. It was before the news and Judge Judy, but after a lot of the mid-afternoon talk shows (like Maury!). Then I landed on Lifetime. At first it was a commercial for an upcoming movie, and I decided that I could use some drama in my life, so I stayed…hoping that I would get that one movie about the 15 year old addicted to porn. Well, turned out that they had a two hour block of Desperate Housewives. It was a few episodes (about 2 or 3) into the first season, so I decided to watch. Well, that time turned into the whole week. That whole week turned into me watching it for 2 hours every day. It got to the point where the highlight of my day was the two hour block of Desperate Housewives. Which, all things considered, is just a tad bit sad.

Well, up until the whole work thing came up, I could spend my days eating and watching re-runs on Lifetime. Well, after the job thing happened, I was about half way through season 3. How long was this you may ask? Well, when you watch 2 episodes a day for 5 days, seasons go by fast. Also, season 3 was during the writers strike, so that was a short one. Luckily every episode was online. At first I was just going to watch the episodes I missed while working, but that didn’t last. It was too addicting! I couldn’t stop. I ended up watching all of season 4 and 5 in about 4 days. Luckily season six was a few episodes in so after I was done with that ABC.com had more for me to watch. Now, unfortunately, I have to wait a whole week for new episodes. It’s okay though because I don’t think about it for a whole week, more that I remember that it’s Monday, and I can watch the new episode online.

 Hội nghị lần này được tổ chức giữa lúc có nhiều dấu hiệu cho thấy suy thoái toàn cầu đang giảm nhiệt. Kể từ cuộc họp gần đây nhất của G20 hồi tháng 4, các nước đã bắt đầu chứng kiến kết quả của các chiến lược giải cứu như cắt giảm lãi suất và bơm hàng trăm tỷ đôla vào nền kinh tế để phục hồi tăng trưởng. 

Trung Quốc đang hưởng thụ sự phục hồi mạnh mẽ. Trong khi đó, có nhiều dấu hiệu cho thấy nền kinh tế Mỹ và Châu Âu cũng bắt đầu lấy lại sức. Tuy nhiên, thành công này lại sinh ra một loạt các vấn đề mới.

 Các khoản tiền kích thích kinh tế nhằm ngăn chặn tình trạng giảm cầu khiến cho thâm hụt ngân sách tăng cao. Chính sách tiền tệ lỏng lẻo được thực thi để làm dịu các thị trường tín dụng thì gây lo ngại về lạm phát. 

Giới kinh tế gia cho rằng, giải quyết những lo ngại đó không phải là một điều dễ dàng. Ngừng hành động quá sớm có thể bóp nghẹn sự tăng trưởng còn chờ đợi quá lâu lại làm cho giá cả leo thang.

Hiện nay, nhiều người cũng lo ngại về tình trạng các quốc gia hành động đơn phương, không hợp tác với nhau vì điều này có thể đe dọa sự phục hồi toàn cầu.

Sự cân bằng phức tạp 

Đến nay, các nhà lãnh đạo G20 phải hành động thận trọng, làm sao vừa cố gắng ngăn chặn nỗi lo lạm phát vừa tránh phải tăng lãi suất hoặc từ bỏ kích thích kinh tế cho đến khi nào một sự phục hồi rộng khắp ngưng lại. 

Ở Pittsburgh, các lãnh đạo G20 được cho là sẽ nhắc lại lời của các bộ trưởng tài chính và thống đốc ngân hàng trung ương nước mình rằng mặc dầu bàn bạc các chiến lược rút lui là rất quan trọng nhưng vẫn còn quá sớm để thực thi các chiến lược ấy.  

Mỹ dự định sẽ thúc đẩy một thỏa thuận với mục đích tránh để xảy ra những bất cân bằng thương mại toàn cầu. Chính quyền Obama cho rằng một thỏa thuận như vậy là cần thiết bởi vì sức chi của người tiêu dùng Mỹ nhiều khả năng sẽ vẫn ảm đạm và các nước phụ thuộc vào xuất khẩu như Trung Quốc cần phải dựa nhiều hơn vào tiêu dùng nội địa để duy trì sức tăng trưởng toàn cầu.

“Chúng ta phải làm điều gì đó chưa từng làm trước kia”, Bộ trưởng Ngân khố Mỹ F. Timothy Geithner nói. “Ngay từ giai đoạn phục hồi đầu tiên, chúng ta đã nỗ lực đưa Thế giới đi theo một khuôn khổ nhằm ngăn chặn một tình trạng bong bóng nguy hiểm lần nữa”.

Các quan chức G20 cho rằng, khó có khả năng các nhà lãnh đạo sẽ thực hiện thêm các cam kết tài chính trên quy mô của những cam kết hồi tháng 4, khi các lãnh đạo G20 nhất trí tăng gấp 3 lần nguồn lực của Quỹ tiền tệ quốc tế (IMF).

Nhiều nước đã đồng ý thực hiện các bước đi mới để tăng cường năng lực điều chỉnh của hệ thống tài chính này. Tuy nhiên, người Châu Âu và Mỹ đã đưa ra những yếu tố cải cách khác nhau. 

Châu Âu muốn đẩy mạnh những hạn chế về tiền thưởng của các chủ ngân hàng để loại trừ cái mà họ xem như động cơ cố hữu khuyến khích các hành động mạo hiểm thiếu trách nhiệm. 

Mỹ thì nhấn mạnh hơn đến chủ trương buộc các ngân hàng phải tăng chất lượng và số lượng đồng vốn họ có trong tay để bù đắp những mất mát tiềm ẩn trong một nỗ lực nhằm bảo vệ tốt hơn những người trả thuế khỏi phải trả cho những sai lầm của ngân hàng. 

Các thành viên G20 hiện nay đang làm việc dựa trên một khuôn khổ chi tiết hơn về cải cách điều chỉnh với các thời hạn chót đã định. Rốt cục, theo sát hay không là phụ thuộc vào cơ quan lập pháp các nước.

(GiaVang.com.vn – Giá vàng Việt Nam và Thế Giới) – Sau khi đã hành động với một tốc độ và sự hợp tác chưa từng có tiền lệ trong 5 tháng qua để ngăn chặn điều mà nhiều người lo sợ là một cuộc đại suy thoái nữa, các lãnh đạo của 20 nền kinh tế lớn nhất thế giới sẽ nhóm họp ở Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, vào ngày 24/9 để xác định liệu đã phải lúc giảm dần các nỗ lực giải cứu kinh tế và bàn về việc cần làm để ngăn chặn khủng hoảng tái diễn.

 Hội nghị lần này được tổ chức giữa lúc có nhiều dấu hiệu cho thấy suy thoái toàn cầu đang giảm nhiệt. Kể từ cuộc họp gần đây nhất của G20 hồi tháng 4, các nước đã bắt đầu chứng kiến kết quả của các chiến lược giải cứu như cắt giảm lãi suất và bơm hàng trăm tỷ đôla vào nền kinh tế để phục hồi tăng trưởng. 

Trung Quốc đang hưởng thụ sự phục hồi mạnh mẽ. Trong khi đó, có nhiều dấu hiệu cho thấy nền kinh tế Mỹ và Châu Âu cũng bắt đầu lấy lại sức. Tuy nhiên, thành công này lại sinh ra một loạt các vấn đề mới.

 Các khoản tiền kích thích kinh tế nhằm ngăn chặn tình trạng giảm cầu khiến cho thâm hụt ngân sách tăng cao. Chính sách tiền tệ lỏng lẻo được thực thi để làm dịu các thị trường tín dụng thì gây lo ngại về lạm phát. 

Giới kinh tế gia cho rằng, giải quyết những lo ngại đó không phải là một điều dễ dàng. Ngừng hành động quá sớm có thể bóp nghẹn sự tăng trưởng còn chờ đợi quá lâu lại làm cho giá cả leo thang.

Hiện nay, nhiều người cũng lo ngại về tình trạng các quốc gia hành động đơn phương, không hợp tác với nhau vì điều này có thể đe dọa sự phục hồi toàn cầu.

Sự cân bằng phức tạp 

Đến nay, các nhà lãnh đạo G20 phải hành động thận trọng, làm sao vừa cố gắng ngăn chặn nỗi lo lạm phát vừa tránh phải tăng lãi suất hoặc từ bỏ kích thích kinh tế cho đến khi nào một sự phục hồi rộng khắp ngưng lại. 

Ở Pittsburgh, các lãnh đạo G20 được cho là sẽ nhắc lại lời của các bộ trưởng tài chính và thống đốc ngân hàng trung ương nước mình rằng mặc dầu bàn bạc các chiến lược rút lui là rất quan trọng nhưng vẫn còn quá sớm để thực thi các chiến lược ấy.  

Mỹ dự định sẽ thúc đẩy một thỏa thuận với mục đích tránh để xảy ra những bất cân bằng thương mại toàn cầu. Chính quyền Obama cho rằng một thỏa thuận như vậy là cần thiết bởi vì sức chi của người tiêu dùng Mỹ nhiều khả năng sẽ vẫn ảm đạm và các nước phụ thuộc vào xuất khẩu như Trung Quốc cần phải dựa nhiều hơn vào tiêu dùng nội địa để duy trì sức tăng trưởng toàn cầu.

“Chúng ta phải làm điều gì đó chưa từng làm trước kia”, Bộ trưởng Ngân khố Mỹ F. Timothy Geithner nói. “Ngay từ giai đoạn phục hồi đầu tiên, chúng ta đã nỗ lực đưa Thế giới đi theo một khuôn khổ nhằm ngăn chặn một tình trạng bong bóng nguy hiểm lần nữa”.

Các quan chức G20 cho rằng, khó có khả năng các nhà lãnh đạo sẽ thực hiện thêm các cam kết tài chính trên quy mô của những cam kết hồi tháng 4, khi các lãnh đạo G20 nhất trí tăng gấp 3 lần nguồn lực của Quỹ tiền tệ quốc tế (IMF).

Nhiều nước đã đồng ý thực hiện các bước đi mới để tăng cường năng lực điều chỉnh của hệ thống tài chính này. Tuy nhiên, người Châu Âu và Mỹ đã đưa ra những yếu tố cải cách khác nhau. 

Châu Âu muốn đẩy mạnh những hạn chế về tiền thưởng của các chủ ngân hàng để loại trừ cái mà họ xem như động cơ cố hữu khuyến khích các hành động mạo hiểm thiếu trách nhiệm. 

Mỹ thì nhấn mạnh hơn đến chủ trương buộc các ngân hàng phải tăng chất lượng và số lượng đồng vốn họ có trong tay để bù đắp những mất mát tiềm ẩn trong một nỗ lực nhằm bảo vệ tốt hơn những người trả thuế khỏi phải trả cho những sai lầm của ngân hàng. 

Các thành viên G20 hiện nay đang làm việc dựa trên một khuôn khổ chi tiết hơn về cải cách điều chỉnh với các thời hạn chót đã định. Rốt cục, theo sát hay không là phụ thuộc vào cơ quan lập pháp các nước.

Related – WB – 1 Season (18 Episodes) – USA

In 2005 WB was all about the family. There wasn’t a night of TV where you weren’t going to be bombarded with family more photogenic than your own doing things like solving problems, or loving each other, or solving problems through loving each other. 7^th Heaven, Gilmore Girls and Everwood were about family. Charmed and Supernatural were about siblings who fought the forces of darkness together. The WB sitcom block on Friday consisted of What I Like About You, Twins, Reba and Living With Fran all of which are also about family.

The WB loved families; which is why Related feels like the perfect fit, almost. Related is from Marta Kauffman, one of the producers of Friends, and Liz Tuccillo, one of the writers from Sex & The City, and the pitch goes that there are four women living in New York City who all hang out AND they’re all sisters. They’re friends but they’re family! They’re sisters but they hang out as friends!

If Related had been pitched to The CW these girls wouldn’t have been sisters; they would have been in the same fashion school for preppy girls, or they’d all be rich L.A. party girls, except for one of them who would be their token poor friend. Basically, they wouldn’t be ‘related’. While the WB loved families, The CW hates their families. One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, 90210, Melrose Place, welcome to the world of friends. You could argue that The Vampire Diaries is about two brothers, but I would argue that these statements I’m making aren’t based on facts.

The four sisters are Ginnie, played by Jennifer Esposito from Spin City and Samantha Who?, Ann, played by Kiele Sanchez who would later get killed off in Lost, Marjee, played by Lizzy Caplan who went from this Kauffman series to the Kauffman produced The Class and who is now in Party Down, and Rose, played by Laura Breckenridge who’s most notable achievement is starring as that way too young looking teacher who hooked up with Dan Humphries on Gossip Girl.

Breckenridge is like a personality-less Ellen Page, Sanchez doesn’t look ‘related’ at all, while Esposito and Caplan are both good. Which would explain why those two are the two getting steady work while the others have to do guest spots on Gossip Girl.

Their dad is getting remarried and the pilot culminates in his surprise engagement party. Naturally each of the girls have their very own problems that will all spill out in the final moments of the episode. Ginnie is pregnant and hasn’t told anybody but her secretary, for some reason. Ann has been dumped by her boyfriend. Marjee has been evicted and Rose has switched majors from pre-med to experimental theatre. In the only funny line from the pilot her dad asks “What is experimental theatre? Is it MIME? Am I paying forty thousand dollars a year on MIME?”

For a show with the premise ‘sisters who hang out’ it would be good if we maybe got to spend more time with these sisters when they actually hang out. Related falls into many of the same story traps The Class did, the characters don’t spend a lot of time together. The show opens with a montage of moments with the sisters all just hanging around on the couch, but that idea is quickly dropped. You don’t even see the couch for the rest of the episode. They go about their own very separate, very different lives, and deal with their own problems.

These Sorelli sisters are no Gilmores. Shows like this have to convince us we want to hang out with the main characters each week. Gilmore Girls, Friends, Sex & The City were all massive successes because you wanted to spend time with the characters. With Related you sort of feel like ‘hey, I’ve got problems of my own’ I don’t want to hang out with you and hear about your problems as well. Especially if you’re not going to be solving them with quirky rapid fire dialogue like Lorelai would.

Related could grow into something that isn’t, you know, awful. With time I’m sure these sisters could develop into genuine human beings to whom we grow affection but at the moment they’re just a collection of character traits that appear about as related as women with the Italian surname Esposito and the Puerto Rican surname Sanchez normally would. In the end I hope that we’ve all learnt the lesson that any problem can be solved with the love of family. Aww. Sisters!

We have led technology and we have been led by technology.  Let’s make movies not scripts.  We need a more collabarative environment in entertainment.  Movie business model to increasingly work more on spec: from writers to directors to actors… Less upfront cash.  If creatives get paid from ’successful results,’ the accounting needs to detoxify. Real costs have been artificial for some time.  People who figure out the monetization of new media will be stars.  There is too much content choice.  New world: RED camera, Redbox, red ink…  ± 80% DVD carveouts = sequels and big budgets.  How do you make movies more engaging – two-way cinema?  An agent’s job is not to just get the client some jobs. An agent’s job is to advise the client.  This is not the time to come into the film business to get rich quick.

Darcy Antonellis, WB, Chris Carey, Paramount, Ed Leonard, Dreamworks Future of Film is in the democratization of the creation and distribution process. The Hollywood walls will come down.  Warner Brothers CTO is a big proponent on innovating with cloud computing:  Do you have to be sad for you to say goodbye?  Static problem solving: that world is gone…removing the middle between technology and art. Fx heavy films, event films have strong marketing potential.  Talking about content locker access / own, rent, stream, etc – in the cloud.  If the content becomes readily avaliable, will distribution no longer be (the other) king?  Actors pop in 3d, become more than we want to know.  3D panels are a true game changer. The whole darn experience is about to be reinvented.  3D and holograms are not sci-fi, it’s reality now, will change entertainment experiences forever.  Processing power dramatically increasing next few yrs + transforming film production techniques.  Search, recommendation & social media are the new opportunities for the future of film.  Widgetizing of the Internet on the TV screen will be a game changer.

SAG – With the emerging business and distribution models, we need to figure out how we ensure a pool of talent.  My hope is that we get back to the grand bargain that we had: Looking out longterm for the health of the industry.  With each one of these deals, we are incrementally pushing forward the future of the industry.  It’s better for the industry if we are all talking to each other early and more often.  Manatt – One of the most unusual effects of having Wall Street money come into Hollywood has been increased transparency.  Future: We’ll see an odd combination of consolidation and fragmentation at the same time. Foreign investment will increase next year.  Gersh - We go directly to advertisers who used to sponsor shows. Now they spend the same money, but they own show. Day-and-date will be more prominent on the independent side.  Gibson - We are gonna see a lot more deals with combining of assets.
