En pub som ligger bortgemt på Østbanen i Oslo. Man går ind fra den gamle Østbanehal, og så kommer man ind i en af Norges mest storslåede og vakre pubber.  Lokale er gedigent, med 8 meter til loftet.  Der er placeret en stor ø bar midt i lokalet. Den er i mahogni og over bare er der placeret et stort ur. Rundt baren er der et stor plads til at mingle eller gå rundt.  Ved væggen mod hallen er der bænke, ude i det store rum er der et borde med bænke, samt et ”køkkenbord”, på den ene endevæg er det dejlige Chesterfields, på den andre er der høje skindbænke med træborde. Ud mod søsiden er der høje borde til at stå rundt nyde en øl og se på udsigten. De har mange pladser udenfor også.  Der er højt mahogni panel på væggene, med høje vakre dekoreret buer over. Op til loftet er det flotte spejle og malerier. På gulvet er der flotte fliser i sort og hvidt.

De har flere øl en normalt på en norsk pub. Plus for det, men stort minus for ølhygienen. Øllet smager metal, og det virker ikke som de har renset anlægget i år. Der røg en gardin!  De har også et godt udvalg af spiritus.

Stemningen lider lidt af placeringen. De fleste mennesker er de på vej fra et sted til et andet med tog.  Jeg tror at når området rundt Operaen bliver videre udbygget vil dette blive et populært sted.

Kan man få en åndelig bodega? På Vesterbro Torv prøver man. Den har fire Buddha figurer, og en ejer som er buddhist og man ligger ved siden af Eliaskirken.  Er det ikke lidt åndelig over at nyde en kold fadøl?

Jeg synes i øvrigt det gamle navn Vester Kro er et bedre navn. Buddha Bar får dig til at tænke på nogle andre etablissementer rundt i Europa, med en helt anden stil end denne.

Det er et rimelig lille lokale, med en bar som fylder meget af lokalet.  Der er 70er kitch tapet på væggene og på baren. Lidt slidt, og den falder af baren nogle steder. Der er bænke langs væggene og spejle over bænkene. Der er flotte lamper i loftet.

Betjeningen er meget sød. Der er en god stemning. Man kan også sidde ude om sommeren. Men at det skal koste mere for øl her, en de andre cafeterier på torvet er lidt mærkeligt.

Et godt sted for Nordmænd på rygeferie. Du finder Buddha Bar her.

How could anyone not love George Burns and Gracie Allen? They were adorable, hysterically funny, and they loved each other so much.

I first discovered the pair through their Vaudeville work. I find the whole world that was Vaudeville to be completely fascinating, and George and Gracie are probably my favorite act that I’ve found.

The pair met in 1922 and performed on the Vaudeville circuit together. When their act first started, it was Gracie who was the straight man, but George quickly discovered that it worked better the other way around. The two fell in love while working together and were married in 1926.

By the early 1930s, Vaudeville was starting to die out, and George and Gracie had to find other ways to perform. While most of their work at this time was on the radio, they did make a few films, usually playing supporting roles, but always giving wonderful and bright support.

We’re Not Dressing (Norman Taurog, 1934)
We’re Not Dressing is a wonderfully strange little musical. It’s set on an uninhabited island after a shipwreck, and features Bing Crosby singing, Carole Lombard trying to sing at points, Ethel Merman and Leon Errol being goofy, and Ray Milland as one half of a duo of gold digging princes. Oh, and there’s a bear who sometime wears roller skates. So yeah, George and Gracie are actually the most normal thing in the movie. They play a couple of scientists (I think, I’m not sure we’re ever actually clear on what they do). They get a few really amazing Vaudeville-type bits, like Gracie’s “Moose Trap”. It’s a weird movie, and I kind of love it a lot, but Burns and Allen really make their scenes great.

Six of a Kind (Leo McCarey, 1934)
Despite the fact that this movie was directed by the amazing Leo McCarey, I’m not that crazy about it. I know it might be somewhat blasphemous, but I am not a WC Fields fan. He kind of grates on my nerves, especially in this movie. Though, admittedly, this is one film where he does that the least. It’s an interesting idea, making a movie using three great comedic duos: Burns and Allen, Charles Ruggles and Mary Boland, and Fields and Alison Skipworth. All the couple balance each other out pretty well. Gracie is easily the best thing about this movie, especially when she’s causing all manner of problems for Ruggles (like, oh, making him fall off a cliff).

I’m not too crazy about this movie either. I find the story and pacing to be incredibly messy, and I think the romance between Fred Astaire and Joan Fontaine is really flat. Yet again, Burns and Allen are the high point of the movie. The trio of Astaire, Allen, and Burns is actually quite excellent. The movie might have been a lot better if more time was focused on it. And it would have been wonderful to see them in more movies together. They could have been Fred’s partners after he split from Ginger!

Much has been written about the value of taking good care of yourself. Julia Cameron, in her legendary work, The Artist’s Way, tells us that “treating yourself like a precious object will make you strong.” It makes sense that if you are nurturing yourself, you are giving yourself what you need to be healthy and strong. Not only does it benefit your own well-ness, it makes you a better lover and care-giver. Spiritual teacher, Paulette Terrels, said, “”It is our own self love that enables us to truly love others.” It’s easy to do, you just need to think about it and eventually it will become a habit. Special Agent Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks believed in it. “Every day, give yourself a present.”

You might start by noticing places you already nurture yourself or places where you could use some nurturing. Here are some ideas to get you going ~

1) Slow down and allow yourself to fully enjoy what you’re doing. Take a moment to look around and say, “Ah, yes, this is good.” Be aware that you’re drinking Agent Cooper’s beloved hot cup of joe (quiet cup of tea or beverage of your choice) and how good it tastes. At a red light, take a few long, slow breaths. You might try eating a meal slowly. You’ll be surprised at how refreshed and satisfied you feel afterwards.

2) Call or write to someone you’ve been thinking about and spend some time with them.

3) Plan a date with yourself. It may seem awkward at first, but if you let yourself, you’ll come up with all kinds of fun things. What about that guitar that’s collecting dust in the corner? Pull it out and play with it for an hour. Or go to a museum. The trick is to plan it with excitement and show up. Surely you can squeeze in an hour or 20 minutes for yourself once a week. 4) Book time to do something you really love doing. Give yourself a limited time if you need to, but make the time and stick to it. Life is so much richer when you do things that bring you joy. (Maybe just watch a funny movie. I recommend It’s a Gift with W.C. Fields or The Marx Brothers.)

5) By all means, if you hear yourself saying you need to get some rest, or slow down, or eat better, do something, even one little thing, to show yourself you’re listening.

6) Take the day, the morning or afternoon, an hour off from time to time – before you need it! It’s so much more fun to have time off when you’re not feeling sick or wiped out.

7) Get a massage. This stimulates the body and helps it to function better. You’ll definitely feel pampered. Women can get their hair done, a manicure or pedicure. Men can take a steam bath. A foot rub will please everyone! If I had my way, I’d have my feet rubbed every day. Find a reflexoligist to give you a foot rub and see how good you feel about life!

8)  Listen for when you say, “I’ve been meaning to ______” Book time and do it. You’ll feel better if you do.

9) Buy yourself a gift. Doesn’t have to be expensive. Just take yourself out and buy something that makes you smile.

If you find all this way too much for your busy schedule, try this:

First, keep a list with your schedule of things you’d like to do, that would be fun, bring you joy or make you feel loved.

Second, book time in your calendar.

Third, guard it.

The first couple times you say no to other plans during that time, you may feel guilty, but forge on and soon it will get easier. The trick is that if you absolutely positively have to give up the time, reschedule it. Keep rescheduling until you do it.

I promise, once you get into the habit of nurturing yourself, you’ll be looking for ways you can do it every day.

A story is told of a neighbourhood boy passing by W.C. Field’s home

one Sunday morning on his way to church.

He was surprised to see W.C. on the front porch sitting on a wooden chair,
