This edition of Secondhand Sunday is a bit different. I think it’s pretty obvious right off the bat that neither this song or video is more than a few months old. Well, let me put it this way. For some reason I completely missed that Bishop Allen had put out a video for “Shanghaied,” and yes I know they already have another new one. This is one of my favorite tracks off of Grrr and the video is just extremely cute. All it entails is Bishop Allen sitting around and singing on a couch, in a hallway, and to a rabbit. One thing I also love about this video is that singer Justin Rice was wearing the same blue hoodie when I interviewed him back in March on the release of this record. The video was directed by Bob Byington, who also made the movie Harmony and Me in which Rice stars in (It comes out 11/17). In other Bishop Allen news the band is on the final week of their tour with the last two stops at Union Hall (Friday, 21+) and The Bell House (Saturday, 18+) in Brooklyn. Fun!

Watch Bishop Allen’s “Shanghaied”
But I did turn in all my work, and even turned a paper in early because I was an idiot and thought it was due thursday instead of this coming tuesday. Oh well, one less thing to me to worry about.

So what exactly gave me the impulse to drive 2.5 hours south of Gig Harbor for a couple days?

Well, I wanted to hang out with my WAS buddies, and going to Portland was my chance to do that.

But I also went to go see a great show – a benefit for Portland’s PDX Pop Now organization, which celebrates the local musicians of Portland. It’s pretty cool. Actually, when I emailed a woman from PDX Pop Now about the photo policy of the club, Mississippi Studios, she said I wouldn’t be able to get on the main floor since I’m not 21, but she did say that she could get me on the list for the festival in the spring.

Portland people are so damn nice.

The guy taking our tickets asked me if I had a photo pass for the show. I told him I didn’t, but then he said, “I don’t wanna give you any grief. Just don’t use any flash.”

I never use flash if I don’t have do. And I didn’t.

See. I made this one my desktop.

I’m finally proud of my concert photography. It feels nice to actually have good pictures to send to PopWreckoning instead of the shitty ones I’ve been sending from my Coolpix. YES!

Here are a couple more of Britt Daniel and the other bands, IOA and The Robinsons.

It was a great show, and the balcony had some pretty sweet seating. It wrapped around the stage on three sides, which gave extra room for us youngins. We were the first ones to get to the balcony, so we got the best seats out of the 35 seats upstairs. 35 seats. Isn’t that cool? We need cool clubs like that in Tacoma. Because Tacoma’s lame, and only has The Viaduct that plays shitty-ass hardcore music and Club Impact that caters to 16-year-olds.

After the show was over, Laura and I drove to Sabrina’s to stay the night, and hang out with her cool baby, Curtis. He’s like a monkey, makes gremlin noises, and he head-bangs. Or he’s just squirmy. Anywho, he’s funny. We stuck around there for a bit the next day and had children climbing on us for a good two hours. We watched Cinderella and ate bacon. Then it was time to meet Adrian and Renee, and Renee’s friend Ahmad.

Another reason why Portland people are so nice – the guy running the parking garage gave us the code to open up the door if we needed to get to our car after 6, which is when it closed. See? Nice.

We walked over to the Burnside Powell’s. And let me tell you, up until then, I felt like a terrible word nerd for never having been to Powell’s. It’s an entire block of books. Four corners of shelves up to the ceiling of books. It was overwhelming. Like a labyrinth of new releases, old classics, an entire nook of moleskines, and room filled with sci-fi. The first thing I did was go find the new Postsecret book to see if my secret made it in. It didn’t, but I did find this.

It says, “I called in sick to work today so I could buy this book.”

It made me extremely happy. I almost bought it just because of that, but I was being cheap, so a photo sufficed. About 20 minutes after Laura and I got there, so did everyone else. And we browsed the many rooms of Powell’s, and Ahmad had a certain interest in girl gangs.

“Wouldn’t it be great if when you went to heaven, everyone was in a girl gang? No one would fight, but we’d all be ready to fight. And we’d have great matching outfits? That’s be perfect.”

We asked the woman working at the desk if there were any books on girl gangs, but sadly enough, there weren’t.

Actually, I didn’t spend a lot of money this weekend at all. I only spent it on food and a new sweater. We ate some pretty interesting food while we were there though. I had a couple new culinary experiences while in Portland. One being lamb meatballs at a mediterranean restaurant, and saffron rice at that same restaurant.

This one. Doesn’t it have a ridiculous sign? What are those purple claws supposed to be?

Lamb was really good. I can say that now.

But the true wonderment of culinary confections was where we went later that night. No, we never got to hit up Pine State Biscuits, because we had no idea where Belmont St. was, and we walked about 8 miles that day back and forth from Powell’s to Renee’s hotel, to Everyday Music, to Am App, to Buffalo Exchange, and then Voodoo Doughnuts.

Yes, Voodoo Doughnuts opened my eyes to the most confusing, most tasty doughnut I think I’ve ever had.

You may think this looks disgusting at first glance, but trust me, if you ever get to chance to go to Voodoo Doughnuts, you need to try one. YOU MUST.

The Maple Bacon Doughnut.

Just think about it: sweet and salty is never bad; candied maple bacon is tasty; don’t you always dip your bacon in syrup? I know I do.

Once we’d walked to and from Voodoo Doughnuts, Ahmad found some sweet tights for his Halloween costume and we sang down the street back to Renee’s swanky hotel.

As we sat and watched the rerun of thursday’s Project Runway, Ahmad came up with a great idea. We’ve started a band. And we’ll look like a girl gang. And we’ll be called Hot Carl. Laura will play keyboard, I’ll play guitar, Adrian will play bass, Ahmad will sing vocals, and Renee would be our band manager. We wouldn’t need a drummer, only a drum machine. Because that’s how we roll.

Hot Carl.

And yes, we know what Hot Carl means. I can’t remember who suggested it, but once they did, I knew it meant something else, but for some reason, it slipped my mind. So I googled it. And then we all laughed. It was PERFECT.

So…. when we left, Laura, Adrian and I walked literally for almost an hour trying to find our damn parking lot. I’m pretty sure we went around the same block three times.

Hot Carl.

But eventually, we found it, opened the door, and made our way through Vancouver to drop Adrian off, since it was on our way.

Hot Carl.

We stopped at a restaurant called Elmer’s for dinner. We got there at about 8:40, but it closed at 9. The waitress who seated us didn’t really care because she worked the bar later, so she let us stay after hours to finish out sandwiches and fries (and onion rings).

Hot Carl.

Seriously, if you don’t know what that means, google it right now. Urban Dictionary will be the first one that comes up, and that is the definition. Seriously.

We drove back to Sabrina’s earlier than we had the night before, so we got a little bit more sleep than the previous night. The next morning, we went to this restaurant – I’m not kidding – called Fatty Patty’s in Battle Ground. And we ate – I’m not kidding – slop. Well, it was hashbrowns with bacon bits, ham, cheese, green onions, all covered in white gravy. I like my hashbrowns a little bit crunchier, but it was pretty tasty. And even after my coco-puff doughnut I’d had when we first woke up.

Yeah, pretty much the food was the best part of the trip, other than the show on thursday, and how fucking huge Powell’s is.

I’m off to listen to Child Star some more.

With all my television shows on the air now – trust me, there are a lot – there is still one show that I wished lasted longer than 10 episodes.

Remember this bunch?

Then last year’s all-new cast?

Well, Skins is coming back for a 4th series in January. Thank god. But E4 would be dense if they didn’t bring back the ultimate guilty pleasure. I mean, come on. I’d so much prefer the promiscuous bunch from Bristol than the NY socialite bitches on Gossip Girl. Today, I had such a hankerin’ for some Skins, I searched the Wiki to see if there was any new info on series 4. Not much since the photo surfaced from a few weeks ago, but I did find this lil’ tidbit:

In May 2009, E4 confirmed that Film4 and Company Pictures are in “preliminary talks” about a movie spin-off.[7] It is unknown which of the cast members would be featured, or where the film will fit in the show’s continuity, leading to a possibility that both generations of characters will meet. A novel is also being produced and set to be released January 7, 2010. The novel will take place in between Series 3 and Series 4.[8][9] MTV announced they will adapt Skins to American television. The U.S. version will be filmed in Baltimore with an unknown cast, despite the already-negative attitude towards a remake.[4]

Okay, it’s not a “lil’” tidbit, but it’s a big fucking pile of NO. Well, the movie spin-off wouldn’t be a bad idea, because I miss Maxxie and Anwar and Tony and Sid, but MTV, why must you destroy everything? And plus, the FCC would never let MTV get away with anything remotely close to Skins. And with how goddamn PC this country is and how sheltered people like their children nowadays, it just wouldn’t be good. No, Skins. Don’t give up the format. DON’T DO IT. If American television had the balls, they’d just import the show. Not try to take everything cool away from it and Americanize it.

But I’m upset that series 4 will only have 8 episodes. Really? 8 episodes? Balls.

Hoping the Inbetweeners come back too. That show was funny. A nice comic relief after the heavy drama of Skins. Oh well, I’m just SUPER EXCITED that WAS is having their own television show in the UK. How sick is that? TWO OF MY FAVORITE THINGS IN ONE – I THINK I’M GONNA E’SPLODE!

The Floridian band, Surfer Blood is probably one of my favorite bands at the moment. I would begin to describe them as a cross between surf and alternative. The Vox bring it all home for me with a sort of We Are Scientists vibe that is blended with echo and reverb. They are set to release their debut album, Astro Coast in January. Jump on the band wagon early, because no one likes to look like a fool. Give it a listen, it’s worth your time.

So the song for the title!

Well, I should update more often… It is better and easier to remember stuff that way.

So Tuesday was its normal Tuesday goodness. This was mostly doing nothing ALL day… and I mean all day. Well, okay, around about 4th period Tom Baines, Dan Payne, Conoll (?), Nat Fairs, Nico and I all busted our chops down to Fram. Why? Well, I went because of a certain reason… everyone else went for heart clogging food… Well, seeing as it was tuesday it meant that it was WAFFLE LADY!!!!!!! Oh yeah. So, I went, ordered a waffle… then paid £1.80!!! Out of the original £2 cause of the school of TMHS!!!!!!! IT WAS FUCKING TASTY AS SATAN!!!!!!!! I mean really… it was soooooo good…

Physics we started to play with LENSES! Which was fun because it meant pissing Alfie off with Ash… ah… fun… I also picked up my art work… meaning I get to take pictures of it all then put it into a gallery… I just need to find out what the music is called that they have with gallery stuff….

Wednesday I couldn’t find a Maths book, then the day sort of faded into a blur until we got to the end of school… OH WAIT! Archery! So this time Rhy, Nico, Yasmin, Chloé and I were there to look imposing on the small children. We ended up getting everything out… FROM the english block… TO the Sports Hall… cause it was cold and windy. I did my best that go around. I managed to get two nines in a row… then I messed the last one up and got a five…. But I was getting a lot more golds this time around… Luck?

Thursday normally starts with Paired reading… BUT OH LOOK! My child decided he’d be annoying and go do Cross Country… I shouldn’t yell at him… I should yell at the lady that organises it… I waited for ages… she then told us to go their forms. I went to his, got told about Cross Country… went back told the lady, she said, “Okay, we don’t need you then, you can go. Sorry.” and the “us” are Ash (not Physics Ash) and I… I was annoyed by her… Then the rest of the day sort of blended into playing on Max’s iPod… Watching Chloé play the maze thing on Yasmin’s iPod… and getting 6.5/21 on a biology test that I didn’t revise for… oops… (that’s a U with 31% btw). The weird thing is it feels like I’ve written this all out already… but I haven’t… or have I?

Bethany Huls wrote another blog post. However, those that already follow her already know about it (Ben, I will never sing to you unless you somehow get me horribly drunk).

Friday, the Physics I’m not sure what happened… I’m really not… I think we learned some stuff? Chemistry we learned some new stuff that was pretty cool. It was Van Der Maals Forces and Hydrogen Bonds and the other one that I forgot… We then had a test. (brb, being forced to do the washing up… again)… now my hands smell….. so yeah… we then had a test… I was awesome and finished first…. I thought it was easy but like 4 questions… but I didn’t revise so… *Shrugs* but yeah, because I’m awesome and finished first, I was let out about… 20 minutes early, so I went to the common room and talked to Adam, Eliza and Chloé.

Maths was pretty good, we were in the surprisingly bright 60-4 instead of MC6… and I can just say, maybe it is the layout of the tables… it was VERY good. The relaxed nature was very good and it left you with more people near you to check with and such. I thought we should be there all the time…. shame that it is only going to be one more lesson in there then back to boring ol’ oppressive MC6….

After Maths I talked with Adam, Max, Chloé and Ben… oh and Rosie for a bit…. so yeah, we talked a bunch then it was home time…

The weekend was pretty boring. Not much happened, I just played Maplestory CRAP loads and Saturday I played some FF12, then I realised I was the only one in my house so I turned my tunes up onto “UBER LOUD!!!” (aka 11…. ah ha ha) and let that tear through my ears…. We Are Scientists with like 3 or 4 songs… I LOVE those songs…. like… FRUGGING LOADS! Turns out, most the family left to go buy the new car we’d been planning on… ‘pparently it is a Honda Jazz… *shrugs* and it will be picking me up on Thursday… alas, I have no idea what the car looks like… I’d also grown attatched to our old one… heck… it was the “Joo” (OH THAT FUCKING BROTHER OF MINE!!!!!! I think he just stole the bath!!!!!!! DAMN HIM! MY HANDS STIIIIIIINK!!! of dishwater) car… it had become known to all throughout the land…. and now it is gone… now I need to learn the last 3 letters of the license plate for this so I know it is my car… it does, however, mean that Thursday I’ll end up having Scud The Disposable assassin in my bag to make it HEAVIER!

I have written more story, I’m NEARING the end of Chapter 4…. but my aim of 1000 words a day failed after the third day where I got only 42 done… silly slight block… I know what to write… but I don’t like the bit I’m writing because it is, in my opinion, BORING! oh well…

OK a break from Politics and something different just in case any of you might be tired of the vast variety of music played on A-town’s radio stations:

First, from Ole Blighty, The Kooks and their song “Shine On”. You’ve probably heard the chorus in a recent commercial. They’ve got a clean fun sound. Their two albums are definitely worth a listen.

And from the US, We Are Scientists who have got to have some of the best videos in recent years. Their website is nothing but hilarity so google them away. “The Great Escape”:

And finally “After Hours” which is just funny as can be.

Growing up we actually bought my dad one of those dogs — a German Shorthaired Pointer from a kennel out in Mary Hill (by the VA). They’re supposed be great bird dogs. And this one was, just one thing…massive car sickness. We only got to hunt with her once and that was by taking her to a friends house in Kurthwood the day before and leaving her there until we were ready to hunt. Otherwise she would ride in the back, then hop out puke everywhere, crawl under the Jeep and wait till we took her home.

All right! The new semester is well underway, and I’ve got another playlist to post here for y

All right! The new semester is well underway, and I’ve got another playlist to post here for you all. Twenty-four shows, man. And I somehow still haven’t completely run out of ideas for Top 5 lists! Which reminds me… it’s been a really long time since the last time I posted a Top 5 writeup. Maybe I’ll get around to doing it this weekend. It would make more sense for me to post the next one some time in December, seeing as how it was a Christmas special, but I’d rather just post them in the order they were aired. Makes it easier for me to keep track of which ones I’ve done and which ones I haven’t done. I might get around to finally posting it here soon… but until then, sit tight.

Also, before I begin, I would like to dedicate this playlist to the one and only Jack Bauer, what with this being the 24th show and all.

Jack Bauer is the only man to have ever survived a roundhouse kick to the face from Chuck Norris. True story.

And now, on with the playlist!

1. Foo Fighters, “In Your Honor” (In Your Honor)

2. Radiohead, “Just” (The Bends)

3. The Fall Of Troy, “Oh! The Casino!” (Manipulator)

4. We Are Scientists, “Lousy Reputation” (With Love And Squalor)

5. Pavement, “Passat Dream” (Brighten The Corners)

6. Interpol, “Rest My Chemistry” (Our Love To Admire)

7. Modest Mouse, “Florida” (We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank)

8. Arctic Monkeys, “Brianstorm” (Favourite Worst Nightmare)

9. Early Man, “Four Walls” (Closing In)

10. High On Fire, “Cometh Down Hessian” (Blessed Black Wings)

11. Metallica, “For Whom The Bell Tolls” (Ride The Lightning)

12. Mastodon, “Naked Burn” (Leviathan)

13. Slayer, “Reborn” (Reign In Blood)

14. Gojira, “Backbone” (From Mars To Sirius)

15. The Sword, “Under The Boughs” (Gods Of The Earth)

16. Minus The Bear, “Women We Haven’t Met Yet” (Highly Refined Pirates)

17. The Whigs, “I Got Ideas” (Mission Control)

28. Radiohead, “There There (The Boney King Of Nowhere)” (Hail To The Thief)

One last thing: I’d like to thank my parents for sending me a copy of the new RX Bandits album Mandala for my birthday. I’d been looking all over for that album, having just gotten into the band over the summer, and couldn’t find it. Oh, and thanks to everyone who listened to the show tonight as well. Keep tuning in every Friday from 4-6 p.m. on WMUC2, and keep watching this space.

When their debut LP A Strange Education hit stores in 2007 via TVT Records, Glasgow’s THE CINEMATICS

When their debut LP A Strange Education hit stores in 2007 via TVT Records, Glasgow’s THE CINEMATICS were poised for superstardom. Having already received accolades from everyone from SPIN to Teen Vogue to The New York Times and toured with the likes of Interpol, The Bravery and We Are Scientists, it seemed that the New Wave-inspired foursome’s next big “break” was just around the corner. Until the unthinkable happened in early 2008 – powerhouse independent label TVT Records filed for bankruptcy.

A lot has happened since then. Original guitarist Ramsay Miller was replaced by Larry Reid, The Cinematics recorded a new album on their own and The Orchard purchased TVT, making it possible for the band’s sophomore masterpiece LOVE AND TERROR to finally see the light of day. The album, dark and brooding yet full of sharp hooks and vocal melodies that would make Ian McCulloch proud, is about young lovers struggling to make their way in a world in meltdown. Singer Scott Rinning describes Love And Terror as “a truly honest record of our times.”

Love And Terror will be available in all stores on October 6th, but in the meantime you can get a taste of it with the title track and video below.
