Dame Dash’s Dream Team: Kanye West, Young Gunz, Beanie Sigel, Cam’ron & Twista’s track “We Are The Champions”

The remaining X Factor finalists had to make sure that they were on their game this week, as they were joined by rock royalty.  Yes, this week was all about Queen (that’s the band, not the monarch, as Jedward correctly pointed out!) and it was time to find out whether the remaining acts would rock our socks off.

Jamie Archer took to the stage first, with his rendition of ‘Radio Gaga’.  Once again, I thought he made the whole thing look effortless, Dannii thought that although he rocked the crowd – he didn’t perform to his full potential.

Lloyd Daniels was next, singing ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’.  I wasn’t that blown away by Lloyd’s performance, but Simon felt that he was starting to lighten up and thought he was better than last week.

Next up was Olly Murs, who sang ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’.  Despite breaking his finger this week, Olly didn’t seem to be phased by it and I enjoyed his performance.  Louis compared him to Robbie Williams, Gary Barlow and Will Young, adding: “I think you’ve got it all”. 

After his rather musical-like performance last week, Joe McElderry sang ‘Somebody To Love’, which I think is one of the hardest Queen songs to sing.  He made a great job of it though, but Louis felt that the choir in Joe’s performance ‘helped’ him.  This caused Simon to mock Louis, which was highly entertaining.

Then it was time for the return of John and Edward, who sang ‘Under Pressure/Ice Ice Baby’.  I thought they did alright with this song, although their rapping seemed to be a tad out of time in certain parts.  However, Cheryl congratulated them on making the most of this opportunity (in other words, enjoy it while it lasts!)  Calvin Harris also stormed the stage during their performance – only on X Factor eh?!

Stacey Solomon was next up, singing ‘Who Wants To Live Forever’.  I must confess, I’d never heard this song before Saturday, but thought that Stacey hit all the right notes.  Simon said: “That was, by a mile, the best performance of the night so far”.

Danyl Johnson closed this week’s show with ‘We Are The Champions’.  In his VT, Danyl worried about being perceived as cocky or arrogant during his performance.  Louis reassured him by saying: “There’s nothing wrong with being arrogant and confident at all, if you’ve got the talent to back it up, and tonight – you proved that you’ve got it all”.

The Results

On Sunday, we were treated to great performances from Shakira…

…and the 12 X Factor finalists who are releasing ‘You Are Not Alone’ to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

After that, the results were in.  We saw Lloyd and Jamie in the bottom two this week, and the result of that was another shocker – Jamie was gone.

And, as if that wasn’t enough, next week we will be in the presence of two divas – Mariah Carey and Susan Boyle!  Can’t wait!

If you were to have taken a stroll down Broadway and Chambers Street in New York, you would have seen one million people lining the 12 streets that led to City Hall, where the 27th time World Series Champion New York Yankees rode on magnificent floats down those 12 blocks in front of yelling fans and toilet paper-throwing spectators. The parade kicked off at 11:00am ET, but the coverage began at 10:00am ET on WNYW-TV (FOX 5) in New York. The rest of the local networks joined in presentation of the coverage after the parade started.

During the ceremonies at City Hall, the entire Yankees staff took center stage to the sound of Queen’s “We Are the Champions,” which filled the speakers at Yankee Stadium when they clinched the World Series two nights before. Newly re-elected NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented the Keys to the City to all the Yankees staff, players, and even the Yankees’ announcers: John ‘THEEEEE YANKEES WINNNN’ Sterling and Michael ‘SEE YA’ Kay. Randy Levine, the Yankees’ president – either him or another guy – said he pledged to send Jimmy Rollins a crystal ball as a gift. Finishing off the ceremony was Jay-Z, who joined A-Rod on his float. He and Bridget Kelly gave a rendition of the one song that summed up the Yanks’ entire 2009 Regular and Postseasons: “Empire State of Mind.” The organization left City Hall to the sound of Frank Sinatra’s immortal “Theme from New York, New York.”

It was the first time the Yankees had had a World Series Ticker Tape Parade since 2000, when they defeated the New York Mets in 5 games to win MLB’s first World Series title of the new millennium. As I mentioned in a recent post, the Yankees had started this first decade of the new millennium with a World Series win and ended it with a World Series win. They were without question the “Team of the Decade” (Red Sox fans: sorry about that). ESPN couldn’t have said it any better themselves. And to think the Good Day New York staff had some nerve to talk about the so-called “spoiled” Yankees fans – well the Yankees fans are heralded as the greatest fans in the world! Derek Jeter was absolutely right when he said that.

The decade is almost over, but the Yankees’ Quest for #28 has begun.

The 2009 MLB season marked the second and last time this decade that an MLB team won the World Series in the first year at their new stadium. The first was in 2006 by the St. Louis Cardinals in their then brand-new Busch Stadium. This time, the New York Yankees did the same thing in Game 6 that they did when their old Yankee Stadium opened in 1923: they won the World Series, but it was in a luxurious ballpark $1.5 billion and 3 years in the making.

In other words, the Yankees’ efforts paid off.

Andy Pettitte and Pedro Martínez squared off in this one. Pettitte gave up only one run in this, his third straight postseason title-clinching game retroactive to Game 3 of the ALDS vs. Minnesota. Hideki Matsui, the first full-time Designated Hitter ever to win a World Series title with any MLB team (and also the second DH to win the title after Paul Molitor did it in 1993 with the Toronto Blue Jays), scored 6 out of the Yankees’ 7 runs (Mark Teixeira produced an RBI 1B in the 3rd inning), and won the World Series MVP title…which he most definitely deserved. He tied the single-game World Series RBI record that Bobby Richardson set in 1960.

Derek Jeter had amassed 174 postseason hits…the most ever.

Even before the season began, lots of speculation abounded that the Yankees would not win the World Series even though they had a new ballpark. After the All-Star break, MLB Network’s staff had the nerve to go ahead and predict Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Boston Red Sox in the World Series! The nerve of them! And Jimmy Rollins predicted on The Tonight Show that the Phillies would win the World Series in the seven games well there was no Game 7!

This was the 5th time that Jeter, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera (who got the save after Shane Victorino grounded out to finish the decade), and Pettitte himself won the World Series (all with the Yankees). Mark Teixeira, Nick Swisher, A-Rod (who was crying), C.C. Sabathia, Matsui, Brett Gardner, Philip Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, and Robinson Canó among others, were among the first-time World Series Champions. Eric Hinske, A.J. Burnett, Dámaso Marte, Johnny Damon, and others won it for the second time. This was manager Joe Girardi’s first World Series title as a manager (he won three other titles as a Yankees player).

Incomparable NEW YORK YANKEES Winning 27th World Series Championship

Back in 1996, the Yankees trailed the World Series 2-0 vs. the Atlanta Braves, fresh at the time from their 1995 World Series victory over Cleveland. The Yankees went on to win that World Series in four more games, clinching at home. In 1998, they swept the San Diego Padres in four games. In 2000, they defeated their next door-rival Mets in 5 games. And with this championship, they not only brought the World Series back to New York just as the fans expected; they also finished this first decade of the millennium exactly as they began it: by winning the World Series. (They and the Boston Red Sox were the only two MLB teams this decade to win the World Series more than once, with two apiece.)

The Yankees only used Sabathia, Pettitte, and Burnett as their three Starting Pitchers for this World Series (the Minnesota Twins did the same thing in the 1991 World Series). Although much of the Starting Lineup didn’t produce offense in the same way that Matsui and a mere few others did during this World Series, let’s face it: the Yanks had a fantastic season. Despite starting off sour with the absence of A-Rod and Teixeira’s difficulty producing, the Yankees finished the season with the best record in MLB; they swept Minnesota in the ALDS; they eliminated Anaheim in six games in the ALCS; and now they belied assumptions of the Phillies being what people have called “the New Big Red Machine.” Don’t get me wrong; the Phillies had a tremendous season, too, but they were not the 21st century Cincinnati Reds (no offense to Phillies fans). And RyHo went from NLCS MVP to striking out a record 13 times in this World Series. I don’t even need to get into the countless blown calls by the stupid umpires.

Aside from the 2006 Cardinals and the 1923/2009 Yankees, the 1912 Boston Red Sox won the World Series over the New York (now San Francisco) Giants in their first year at their beloved Fenway Park.

YES Network had so much to say during the Postgame. On ESPN, John Kruk attributed the success to the Yankees’ $210 million payroll, but I’d like to tell him that it all paid off. “The payroll this,” “the payroll that.” Bobby Valentine said that the Yanks and I quote “played better than Philly.” Anyway, I’ve said enough. The Yankees are 2009 World Series Champs and are the indisputable best, end of story!

Interactive y MTV Games anunciaron el día de hoy que LEGO Rock Band recibirá en sus filas al legendario grupo de rock, QUEEN, así podremos ver en versión lego a sus integrantes, su líder Freddie Mercury, el guitarrista Brian May, en el bajo John Deacon and en la bataca Roger Taylor. Los temas incluídos son “We Will Rock You” y “We Are The Champions”.

“This is IT! I wanna play! When do I get my toy LEGO man? (¡Eso es TODO!, ¡Quiero jugarlo!, ¿Cuándo tendré a mi juguete LEGO?)”, es lo que comenta al respecto Brian May, guitarrista del grupo. Les dejo una lluvia de imágenes y además un video.

Ver uma animada torcida de Fórmula 1 gritar o nome de Rubinho após uma pole position ousada e heróica foi o suficiente para encher o Brasil de orgulho. Barrichello viu Button ficar no Q2 e largar em décimo quarto e manteve a esperança no título ou pelo menos na vitória diante de sua torcida. Ver uma largada perfeita e volta após volta fazer o melhor tempo e abrindo vantagem do segundo colocado não foi o suficiente para que o brasileiro mantivesse a ponta e terminasse a prova melhor que o companheiro de equipe, Button, novo campeão da F1.

A chuva alagou o circuito no treino de sábado, fez dele emocionante. Na corrida não havia nada mais que apenas nuvens carregadas, o jeito foi engolir à seco mais um título inglês e um pódio sem brasileiros. Mark Webber venceu a corrida, Kubica e Hamilton também subiram ao pódio para completar a festa dos coadjuvantes.

Campeã de construtoras logo no ano de estréia e com a possibilidade de deixar dobradinha no ranking dos pilotos consolida a BrawnGP como uma nova potência da F1. E por falar em consolidação, o pequeno Sebastian Vettel, agora, entra na lista dos favoritos. A RBR ganha com isso.

Para que Button e Ross Brawn chegassem a glória em 2009, muitos nomes tiveram de decepcionar o rol de favoritos. A Ferrari não saiu do provisório a temporada correu e a máquina vermelha de Raikkonen foi mero figurante no combate entre Brawn e RBR. Boa parte desta frustração foi prenunciada com os erros grotescos acometidos no ano passado que por fim podaram o triunfo de Felipe Massa.

Lewis Hamilton e a McLaren não conseguiram assustar ninguém nesta temporada, quando o queridinho da McLaren começou a pontuar pra valer, Button, inconteste, já havia ganhado seis corridas. Fora os tantos fracassos da escuderia somados este ano.

Quem não está mais com nada são os carros da Renault, estão na frente apenas de STR e Force índia, e acredito que mais três GP’s os fariam perder mais uma posição. Após o caso Nelsinho x Briatore, a equipe francesa vive declínio dentro e fora das pistas. A recuperação até é visionada. Kubica e Lucas di Grassi pode ser a dupla de pilotos da Renault para o ano que vem, mas a garantia virá com os resultados, dentro da pista.

Por fim, a campanha vitoriosa de Button foi projetada bem mais na insuficiência dos adversários, o mérito foi o aproveitamento e a regularidade, ao contrário da campanha de Hamilton em 2007. Um exemplo foi o GP do Brasil. Michael Schummacher já largou algumas vezes da 14ª colocação, de lá ele fazia corridas emocionantes, ultrapassagem por ultrapassagem até chegar na zona de pontuação ou até pódio. Button em Interlagos até foi versátil em algumas ultrapassagens, mas ganhou mais posições nas batidas de carros que o intermediava.

Os ventos do Brasil sopraram bonança na terra da Rainha mais ume vez. As nuvens carregadas impediram a chuva, agora, Interlagos guarda o nome Button em uma galeria de campeões ao som do clássico We are the champions. Pra Rubinho a temporada o devolveu por completo à competitividade, já que ele, perto da aposentadoria estava longe também dos históricos segundos lugares.

Felipe Massa não pode entrar de vez nos duelos deste ano, quando começou a trilhar os caminhos da reação, um terrível acidente em Budapeste deixou-o inativo para competir. A velocidade da recuperação do acidente confirmou e configurou o acontecido em um milagre. A salvo coberto pela precaução dos médicos, ele não se afastou da orquestra sonora dos motores. No Brasil foi o grande convidado de honra de que deu a bandeirada final.

I haven’t been posting much this week, mainly because I have been so tired when I get home from work. Phillip is so incredible helping me. I could not do this if not for his sweetness and kindness. How blessed I am to have such a wonderful friend in my ex-husband.

Phillip shows up each morning between 7:30 am and 8:00 am, and he takes me out of the house in my wheelchair. We open the passenger door, and I transfer to my seat. Then Phillip puts my wheelchair in the back of the car, and off we go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Along the way, we stop and purchase some breakfast for me. While Phillip drives, and I share my breakfast with him too — he loves the toast, I check my blood sugar, give myself my insulin, and then eat my breakfast.

By the time I get into the house, I am ready to do my medications, put on my nightgown, and crawl into my bed. Phillip always makes sure my animals are feed and watered (including the feral babies), takes out the garbage, vacuums some nights (Onnie sure is shedding still), and makes sure I have everything I need such as my iced water in my jug by the bed. He always assures me I am getting better and stronger, and we say goodnight. Then he heads home until the next day. What would I do without him?

My heart has been sad because my one son who lives in Memphis has not been calling to check on me, coming by to see if I need anything, or even offering to take me to work (he works at St. Jude ALSAC). I have to admit, this has hurt me very deeply along the way. Even more the reason I am so blessed to have Phillip to help me.

I am fighting hard to come back and my leg has healed remarkably, but the pain from my back is a real issue when I am walking on my walker as is the areas of numbness I am feeling in my leg (evidently injury from the break to some nerves). Today when Phillip came by to check on me I found myself crying, “Will I ever be normal again? I want my old life back.” But I am not so sure this will occur. Time will tell I guess. Phillip reached over and hugged me and assured me I was going to be okay. Somehow the tone of his voice reassured me I could do this — I could reclaim my normal life once again.

Momma Kat will be the “champion kat” once again!

So dry up the tears Momma Kat, and “claw your way back to the top.” Ain’t no broken femur and L3 compression going to conquer this kat! No sir — not now, not ever. I have been reminding myself of all my blessings this afternoon. No more pity party today. Afterall, I have the best friend in the whole wide world — Phillip!

That’s right Macavity! We ARE the champions big guy, and don’t you forget it!

NOTE LATE POST:  I found this wonderful post by a guy named Bob who broke his fibula while playing hockey. His information was very helpful in assuring me I was trying to rush this recovery from the broken femur and the surgery.

I wish I would have found this website months ago as it would have helped me in all kinds of ways. My name is Bob and I broke my leg January 4th, 2002 playing recreational hockey. I was pushed from behind, had both skates planted and must have been up against another players skate or something. I fell forward and tried to twist and avoid falling on my face. My upper body turned but my left skate didn’t move, I felt myself fall onto my left leg and heard / felt a crunch sound that I’m sure everyone here knows what I’m talking about. Lets just say its a sound and feeling you never want to experience again or for the first time for that matter. Once lying on my butt on the ice I attempted to stand up and skate to the bench. No chance, I tried to use my left leg to balance myself to get up and my brain instantly told me to get the weight off and NOW! At that point I knew something was seriously wrong as I have never broken any bones before.

My team mates hauled me off the ice and loaded me into the back of their car after doing a great job of splinting my leg with a broken hockey stick. My hockey equipment kept everything nice and snug anyway which helped. But no one made any attempt to remove my skate or equipment. I had no idea if it was my ankle that was messed up or what.

Once in the ER they slowly removed my equipment piece by piece and I dreaded the feeling of them pulling off my skate which was tightly on my foot. I was surprised to feel no pain when they removed it. That concluded my ankle was ok, the nurses knew immediately once they saw the swelling above my skate boot that my tibia or fibula or both had been broken. They quickly got me onto Morphine for the first time in my life and it felt very strange but most importantly the pain was subsiding.

Off for X-Rays, X-Ray’s indicated a clean but nasty spiral fracture of the tibia about 4″ above the ankle. Fibula was intact. When I saw the X-Rays I was horrified as seeing my tibia bone which looks huge on an X-ray to be broken into four pieces and not touching anylonger.

I lie waiting in the ER room tiny rooms for 4 hours into the early hours of the morning without food or drink. Very groggy and weak a nurse came to tell me I would be going in for surgery the next morning for most likely a nail and whatever else. Obviously never been in surgery before I was terrified and tried to prepare myself.

The next morning I was visited by a surgeon and he told me after looking at the X-rays himself he recommended not doing surgery as the tibia bone spiral fracture was lined up nicely for healing and there did not appear to be any stray pieces floating around. I was very excited to hear this news to say the least. I was fitted with a full cast (fiberglass) from toe to hip and ended up staying another night in the hospital to monitor the pain with morphine administered. I was instructed on how to use my new aluminum crutches, practicing on stairs and flat surfaces. I was free to head home.

Six and a half weeks with the first full cast, they then put on a new snugger full length cast for another 3 weeks. I then was fitted with a half cast from toe to just below the knee but still no weight bearing of any kind at this time. Another 2-3 weeks with the half cast and I was ready to try weight bearing. Without surgery and any hardware in my leg to help support and hold things together, I was reluctant to put too much weight at first. I was then fitted with a walking Air-Cast and was told to get walking on it with crutches limiting the weight to pain threshold. It wasn’t long and I was stumbling around with the air-cast and without crutches.

It was such a good feeling to be able to walk down stairs and up stairs without crutches and to be able to carry things in both arms and walk at the same time.

Zooming to the present time it is the end of May, 2002, 5 months after the incident. I have been going to physio therapy for a couple weeks to help the swelling that still occurs on a regular basis. Everyone know about the indent you get on your leg from wearing tube socks and the swelling above the pressure point? After five months the swelling is dramatically down around the ankle and lower tibia but after a long day on my feet it still swells up somewhat. Its amazing how being immobilized in a full cast for 3-4 months will atrophy ones muscles and tendons.

I know this is a lengthy story but one of the traumatic experiences in my life that made me open my eyes to being more careful and not to take something as simple as being able to walk to the washroom un-attended for granted. This website has been very helpful for me but also would have been nice to have found just after the incident took place, not after four months had passed and the toughest challenges overcome.

For everyone on this website who is going through similar cases, hang in there and try to keep your chin up, your body will heal itself, I have living proof, no hardware required! And now? The newly healed bones are working as good as ever only five months later, its amazing actually when you think about it.

So today began the famed Homecoming Week celebrations.

First clue: Announcements. They usually take about ten minutes, but today, included the “positive” message of Homecoming. Honestly, not a single soul in my History class paid any attention to the announcements. We never have.

Second clue: Music at lunch. I was actually pleasantly surprised; usually, the soundtrack for lunch is either rap or Mexican Independence music. Today it was Queen. The song “We are the Champions” has been forever disgraced. /facepalm

I honestly don’t get how cheerleaders do it. My friend suspects crack. They’re always so happy, even when you’re the saddest person in the universe. Wait, maybe it’s botox. But not even the freshmen are jazzed about Homecoming. There is a sophomore I know, though, who comes into the classroom so bubbly I’m afraid my head will implode.

Speaking of implosion…

I actually get very embarrassed on a regular basis. But I can take a joke.

He estado estos últimos días cuidando a mi DoRe, pensando en la vida… en nuestra vida. He tenido muchos momentos de desánimo pero cuando se trata de alguien tan luchadora y fuerte como nuestra querida Notitas y ver como se esta mejorando, me da cuerda para seguir adelante y echarle todavía mas ganas. Todos tenemos un motor que nos hace andar, que nos motiva como en mi caso lo es DoRe, pero también existen esas cositas que nos vuelven a la vida, que nos levantan. En mi caso, un día de estos que me agarró la depre, puse música en mi compu y lo primero que salió fue una canción de Queen, Crazy little thing called love. Ahhhhh! llegó en el mejor momento. Por eso ahora les hablaré de Queen.

Queen es una banda de rock inglesa, formada en Londres en 1970 por el guitarrista Bryan May y el bajista Roger Taylor, quienes invitaron a Freddy Mercury para unirse a la agrupación como vocalista. Freddy aportó, a demás de su voz, también sus canciones, pues empezó a componer algunas letras que el mismo musicalizaba en el piano, después sus compañeros agregaban los demás instrumentos.

Los fundadores de Queen no fueron ningunos chavos salidos de alguna alcantarilla que decidieron hacer música, pues Byan May y Roger Taylor, fueron estudiantes del Imperial College de Londres, donde se conocieron y decidieron hacer música. En el caso de Freddy Mercury estudió en el Ealing College of Art, consiguiendo unas de las mejores calificaciones de su generación.

La banda gozó de mucho éxito en Gran Bretaña con los álbumes Queen I y Queen II, pero no fue hasta los discos Sheer Heart Attack yA night at the Opera que verdaderamente despegaron con una gran banda de rock y que se ganaron un lugar ne la historia de la música. Pero buena parte del éxito del Queen se lo dio su vocalista Freddy Mercury quien para mi es un gran genio de la música. Sus composiciones tienen mucho arreglo, una complejidad tan simple, que nos hace notar lo maravilloso que puede ser el rock puro, el rock clásico. Los acordes del piano, acompañados de un riff de guitarra eléctrica… simplemente un hermoso aporte de Queen y de Freddy Mercury.

Freddy Mercury nació el 5 de septiembre de 1946 bajo el nombre de Farrokh Bommi Bulsara en Stone Town, en Zanzíbar, lo que actualmente es Tanzania, la cual fue una colonia británica, por lo cual Freddy pudo obtener la nacionalidad inglesa y emigrar a Londres para estudiar. Pero sus padres provenientes de la India, lo llevaron también a ese país a trabajar, como ya lo hacían en Zanzibar, para el gobierno ingles.

A su llegada a Inglaterra, Freddy siempre estuvo ligado a la música con otras bandas que el mismo había creado, pero su éxito comenzaría a su llegada a Queen, invitado por su amigo John Deacon. Freddy no solo escribió el primer éxito de la banda (Killer Queen) si no que también diseñó el logo de la banda usando los  signos del zodiaco de sus miembros: dos leones como signos de Roger y John (Leo), un cangrejo como signo de Brian (Cáncer) y dos hadas como signo del propio Freddie (Virgo).

El 7 de octubre de 1979 Freddie actuó con el Royal Ballet. Él nunca había participado en un ballet anteriormente pero era algo que él siempre había querido intentar. Las canciones que eligió para actuar eran Bohemian Rhapsody y Crazy Little Thing Called Love. La orquesta tocó las canciones mientras Freddie cantaba en vivo. El primer baile de Freddie fue en Bohemian Rhapsody, en la que actuó con talento enfrente de un teatro lleno de gente que sabía de ballet. Les entusiasmó y recibió una ovación apoteósica en ambas actuaciones.

En 1980, con el cambio de década, Freddie cambió su imagen. Se cortó el pelo y se dejó bigote. Sus fans empezaron a enviarle esmalte para uñas y cuchillas de afeitar. El cambio de década supuso también el acercamiento de Queen a la música funk y disco y a un alejamiento del rock propiamente dicho.

Al final de 1982 todos los miembros de Queen decidieron que querían tomarse un descanso. Anunciaron que no irían de gira en 1983.

El 13 de julio de 1985 fue un día especial para Queen y para Freddie. Fue el día de Live Aid (Ayuda en directo) que fueretransmitido en directo a más de mil millones de personas de todo el mundo. Queen se aseguró su propio lugar en la historia como reconocieron periodistas, fans, críticos y público en general.

En 1986 tuvo lugar la última gira de Queen. El Magic Tour recorrió Europa durante dos meses, acabando en Knebworth Park, el 9 de agosto. Esa fue la última actuación en directo de Freddie Mercury con Queen.

Su última aparición pública fue en una entrega de premios, en los Brit Awards de 1990 y solo se dirigió al publico para decir Gracias, buenas noches, aunque se conservan imágenes posteriores a dicho acto. El 23 de noviembre de 1991 anunció al mundo que padecía de SIDA mediante un comunicado de prensa que fue blanco de muchas especulaciones.

El mismo decía: Respondiendo a las informaciones y conjeturas que sobre mi han aparecido en la prensa desde hace 2 semanas, deseo confirmar que he dado positivo en las pruebas del virus y que tengo el SIDA. He procurado mantener oculta esta información para proteger mi vida y la de quienes me rodean, pero ha llegado el momento de que mis amigos y fans de todo el mundo conozcan la verdad y espero que todos se unan a mi, a mis médicos y a todos los que padecen esta terrible enfermedad para luchar contra ella.

El 24 de noviembre de 1991, horas después del anuncio de su enfermedad, Freddie muere de bronconeumonía multilobar que no soportó debido a su estado avanzado de SIDA al lado de su novio Jim Huttom y del cantante Dave Clark mientras estos lo aseaban en su casa de Garden Lodge en Londres. Su último deseo fue el relanzamiento de Bohemian Rhapsody con el objeto de recaudar fondos para la lucha contra el SIDA.

Ahora vayamos a la música. Esta es la canción que escuché el mismo día que internaron a mi DoRe en el hospital y que me remarcó una vez mas a la increíble mujer que ahora tendría que cuidar y sobre todo, ese sentimiento de amor que existe entre ella y yo.

No podemos dejar de lado todo un clásico o mas bien, dos clásicos.

Bueno, hoy tenía que escribir sobre mi Naturalización, obviamente.

La ceremonia no existe, solamente llegás a una hora a un auditorio y haces fila detrás de varias personas y conforme vas avanzando te movés de silla y de ser el número sesenta y resto por fin te toca… Te ponés de pie, subís las graditas al escenario…firmas acá, ahora firme igual allá, su dedo índice acá y al final firmás por tercera vez pero en uno de esos Libros gigantes, de Actas, con aspecto de ser de los últimos que se usen para la ocación y ya..!!

(ahora como soy tico hablo en vos…que mal)

Un titulito con foto incluida y por favor venga mañana a hacer  la fila de la cédula, con dos testigos ticos y espere los últimos 22 días que ya le entregaremos la cédula…Mejor dicho, solo faltan 3 semanas.

No puedo votar, Calderón se quedará sin mi voto, Laurita gobernará sin mi apoyo y Ottón será para el 2014 que analizaré la situación…No importa, mi intención de hacerme tico nunca fue por la política.

Bueno, llegúe de 12 años…hace exactamente 30 años (que montón acumulados)… La situación no era bonita en el Aparthotel que nos hospedamos los primeros meses, la familia se deshacía y mis papás se divertían peleando entre ellos. Yo, hijo mayor lo sufría bastante (claro) y me escapaba con mis doce años en bus a San José…a leer comics a la Universal y la Lehman…ahí me robé algunos libros (que niñito) que escondía en alguno de los cajones del cuarto donde estábamos.

Veníamos de vivir en México, allá teníamos un perro cocker spaniel super majadero que mi mamá había decidido que era mío y que de la venta me daría $100 dólares solo para mí… Bueno, ya en Chepe y con mis inicios de rockero adolescente pedí mi dinero. Mi mamá me preguntó para que los quería todo, si era mucha plata, yo respondí que era para comprarme la colección completa de Queen…jajaa pobre madre.

Cumplió su promesa y yo caminé todo San José en busca de cada uno de los LPs de Queen…Los conseguí todos. Ahora es  muy fácil hacer eso. Y más fácil bajarlos. Pero en esos años (inicios de los 80s) era casi imposible. Inicios del Coleccionista, del rockero majadero y más gracioso, inicios del científico anárquico que le encanta indagar lo que no necesariamente entiende.

Queen me gustó de primera entrada por Rapsodia Bohemia, genial, pero en tiempos sin videos eran simplemente portadas de discos lo que se sabía de los grupos y de repente, por fin conseguí el disco “A night at the Opera”… lo abrí y ahí estaban mis héroes del rock…

Para un niño el interior del LP era realmente chocante, los tipos de blanco, maquillados y muy ambiguos…todavía me parece chistoso recordarme como me gustaba la música pero no me cabía en la cabeza semejante imagen…jaja trauma superado…fan número uno de Queen y conocedor de las letras y de su música.

Puedo decir que es una buena manera de comenzar a escuchar rock.

Es una buena manera de crecer y conocer este país al que le debo toda mi vida conciente. Viva Costa Rica.

Wow! Toute une soirée de baseball dans la ville de Québec hier alors que les Capitales ont remporté le championnat de la ligue Can-Am contre les Tornadoes de Worcester… Voici les images du dernier retrait et des célébrations!

Une saison remplie d’émotions avec l’arrivée de Pierre-Luc Laforest et Éric Gagné, le départ d’Eddie Lantigua et qui se termine avec un championnat, des feux d’artifices et la foule qui chante “We are the champions” de Queen! Que demander de plus!!! Bravo les Caps!!!

Queue the music… maybe a little Rocky… a little Eye of the Tiger… We Are The Champions (I know Green Day is covering the Queen original, but I like it!!)… whatever gets you pumped…

This is the big-one folks, it’s been highly anticipated for the past month, eagerly hunted for in countless sites; links scoured, devoured, files corrupted, songs mis-spelled, missing altogether. And, finally, after so many long weeks, ‘Highly Evolved’ has managed to get its grubby hands on “The Resistance” by pioneers ‘Muse’. We thought we’d make it up to everyone by making sure our missed Joint Review last Sunday was followed by an exceptional masterpiece. I have to admit, this time our roles might be reversed as my counterpart takes the opposition and I take the for, in this He-Man:

"The Resistance" - 'Muse'

Officially, it isn’t a first for ‘Highly Evolved’s’ Joint Reviews, where we’ve had a really strong disagreement on a band. The last time we had a ‘minor difference’ of opinion was back a few months ago when my partner thought he’d harmlessly mention an album called “Further Complications” by an insufferable man called ‘Jarvis Cocker’. Such was the beginning of the end, and so the debate continues. We have accepted this ‘minor difference’ of opinion as simply a ‘minor difference’ in musical-tastes, despite the general commonalities we both share. Some weeks ago, my counterpart, Michael Hodder, approached me and we’d struck up the usual conversation:

“… So, any music news lately?” I’d ask inquisitively, childishly.

Of course there was music news, there’s always music news, but: “… ‘Muse’ is set to release their new album “The Resistance” in September…”

“Oh, are they now?” I’d scanned my memory; that’s right, ‘Muse’, some experimental-indie band, not too shabby.

“… Yeah, but from their singles, I don’t think it’s going to turn out too well – I don’t think you’ll like it, but it’ll give us both an opportunity to…” – and sorry if I quote this directly, my friend, but it’s hilarious – “… ‘bagg-the-shit-out-of-them.”

A smile overwhelmed my face: so, fresh meat, then?

The weeks followed, we’d maintained a steady flow of reviews, still no sign of an early-leak on part with ‘Muse’, and I’d decided to wait until the full release of the album before I made any rash, pre-judgemental views on the album from its singles. Just this week, we came into possession of the album’s entirety, and after a solid three-hours of listening, with four full play-throughs, we met as usual, on the field.

“… The first half of the album is like listening to ‘Queen’, while the orchestral-overture is a mixture between ‘Sigur Ros’ and ‘Beethoven’, and I know they’re not great metaphors – you either liked it or you hated it,” he’d started.

“… Well, as for the ‘Queen’ sound-alike, to be honest, I really only heard it in two tracks, whereas I thought the orchestral-overtures weren’t anything particularly special. I enjoyed “Exogenesis Symphony Pt 3″, and I was delighted with “Undisclosed Desires”, but it’s what I’d expect from ‘Muse’, and the album was overall pleasant. I’d probably give it a 4.5-outta-5,” I’d splurged; a verbal-vomit.

“Hmm… That’s interesting. I’d probably give it a 4, when it comes down to it,” he’d replied.

And that was that. Friday came and went, and here we are…

‘Muse’ has been one of those rare indie/experimental-pioneers, like my favourites, ‘The Killers’, who have unequivocally pushed any and all boundaries when it comes to musical composition. Competition between indie bands is fiercely underestimated, though it appears primarily as a ‘mongrel-genre’, willing to accept any and all bands who might share likeness to the settlers of its original incarnation, bands with only a hint of experimental, alternative or rock, went unchallenged as they poisoned its ranks. Bands like ‘The Killers’ made a name for themselves with band-specific indicators, like key-and-tempo shifts, in their music, whereas ‘Muse’ made damn-well sure they were individual by including the elements of metal, experimental – and although not overly prominent – punk.

Over-strung guitar/bass and power-percussion combined with standardised-rhythms and vocalisation make the basis for ‘Muse’, and while lyrically “The Resistance” doesn’t contain much epic-notable material, ‘Muse’ remains up there with the best of them. There’s not much here which ‘Muse’ fans will find different from their past albums “Black Holes And Revelations”, or “Origins Of Symmetry”. ‘Muse’ were playing with some interesting elements in “OOS”, which come through more prominently in “The Resistance”, less-so in “BHAR” – I felt that “OOS” had some interesting experimental flaunts which were overshadowed by the heavy metal aspect of their music – at times, there would be perfect thirty-second-sublime moments where everything came together, and because of this ephemeral nature, they disappeared and were swallowed up in a tidal wave of noise.

Personally, I think ‘Muse’ has found a balance between soft and loud in “The Resistance” where they were otherwise at full-bore consistently throughout. “OOS” countered this extremity by juxtaposing it’s metal/experimental with soft/delicate. I know my counterpart is a lover of heavy just as he is of experimental, and on a subliminal level, this could be the underlying reason for his – and I wouldn’t say ‘dislike’ – more ‘hesitant’ judgement overall of “The Resistance“. That, and ‘Muse’s’ uncanny likeness to ‘Queen’, appearing in such cases as tracks: “United States Of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage)”, and “Guiding Light”. When I mention ‘Queen’, it’s the over-flaunt of guitar – which I personally don’t mind – and the girlish-high vocalisation that has been stereotypically ‘Freddie Mercury’s’ ever since his early passing.

Thematically, the album makes a number of lyrical references to ‘1984′ , ‘George Orwell’s’ infamous totalitarian novel depicting fascism and dictatorship at its most extreme. Personally, we both enjoyed this novel a great deal, and it’s inclusion within the album on a whole works well with the idea of ‘resistance’. Tracks are appropriately titled, so it seems a lot of effort went into the construction of the album. With eleven mind-blowing tracks averaging at the five-minute-mark, the album goes for about a wholesome-hour, and this over-generous quantity makes for some fantastic listening.

And because I feel that this is an exceptional album, there remain a number of tracks which I would like to go through in greater detail. Though the album has it’s wholesome-half of typical ‘Muse’, it does contain the “critically acclaimed” three-track-triplet ‘Exogenesis Symphony’ which differs from the whole.

“The Resistance” opens with the appropriately-titled track “Uprising”, and you can expect to find the usual ‘Muse’ elements, with rock/experimental/indie guitar, typical percussion, and accompanying lyrics. It sets the scene, but it isn’t overly interesting.

“Resistance” follows, and this is where the fun begins. It opens with the drone/ambient hum of a distant, whining organ, and is kin to ‘The Dead Sea’s’ melodramatic ambience which floods the atmosphere with secondhand emotion. Piano erupts into full force, together with the ratta-tatt-tatt of drum: it’s easy to imagine the running of feet, or the assembly of an army, with these sounds, and the lyrics:

“Is our secret safe tonight, and are we out of sight, or will our world come tumbling down?*”

For those of you who are familiar with the premise of ‘1984′, the lyrics resonate strongly with the key-characters which the story revolves around, like:

“… love is our resistance…”

“Undisclosed Desires” is my personal favourite track, and that’s because it has this emphatic, infectious opening beat, together with sticatto-violin. When we approach the chorus, the percussion shifts and takes the odd-numbered beats. The vocals are the key here, they keep it all together, together with these delectable lyrics:

“I want to reconcile the values in your heart, I want to recognise your beauty’s not just a mask, I want to exorcise the demons from your past, I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart.*”

“United States Of Eurasia” is replete with ‘Queen’ overtures, and it’s like a combination of “We Are The Champions” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”. I personally love the facelift ‘Muse’ gives to my ‘Queen’ favourites, but for some, it’s too much. Not only does it have that “Freddie Mercury” sound to it, but it has the same high-pitched-electric-guitar as well. It’s up to you whether or not you think the song is a replica, but I’ll stay neutral in this argument. “Guiding Light” follows this same routine, less-so in the vocalisation, more-so in the guitar. It has that same 1-123-1 chorus-buildup ‘Queen’ used to build crescendo.

Onto ‘Exogenesis Symphony’, and it’s a three-part song. “Exogenesis Symphony Pt 1: Overture” has the elements that I think ‘Muse’ have neglected throughout their musical-career, it is a shining example for how they can be just as successful in this line of music as they can in the heavy. Personally, I don’t think too much of “… Pt 1: Overture” because it’s like listening to a reject-Hellboy trailor, with its ambient-violins and all. When the percussion explodes and ‘Muse’ finally appears, the high-pitched moan of “Matthew Bellamy’s” vocals is sublime, but it’s not enough to hold “… Pt 1: Overture” together.

“… Pt 2: Cross-Pollination“ sees a beginning with “The Resistance’s” consistent use of piano – it’s a bit melodramatic, with the ambience, and it isn’t much of a fitting track itself. Overall, symbolically, I suppose, it represents ‘flitting pollen’. Again, when ‘Muse’ does finally appear, it’s the vocalisation which is soy-perb.

And finally, “… Pt 3: Redemption” sees a sombre, softer beginning of piano. Like my counterpart said, ‘Exogenesis Symphony’ is like listening to a combination of ‘Sigur Ros’ and ‘Beethoven‘. We saw the ‘Sigur Ros’ influence prior with the mixture of instrumentation, but “… Pt 3: Redemption” sees an uncanny resemblance to ‘Beethoven’s’ “Moonlight Sonata”, and maybe that’s because it’s set like a waltz. A fitting end to a fine album.

Summarising: ‘Muse’ has finally left their comfort zone and is making music that is making controversy – and controversy means hype, hype means business, and business means money. I have thoroughly enjoyed the album overall, it has a general mix of old-and-new, with less emphasis on re-discovery and more emphasis on exploration. I can’t say it’s flawless, but I can say that it deserves a 4.5-outta-5.

Absolutely fantastic, well-worth a buy.

The Enantiomorphic God

So my mother won a DVD filled with music videos concerning food safety at a school cafeteria manager’s meeting.  The DVD was quite harsh on the ears, but I thought this remake of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions” was almost spot-on, right down to the sequencing you’d hear on a classic rock station.  Since I forgot to bring the DVD with me to my Internet wonderland, I’ll update the information on this DVD on the video’s YouTube page later tonight or something.
