Nachdem wir letzte Woche mal Pause gemacht haben, gibt’s diese Woche volles Programm vom Musikverein:

►Mittwoch 25.11. sympathisch-melodischer Indiepop mit DANCE YOURSELF TO DEATH und LONSKI & CLASSEN plus einem extra-herbstlichen Indie-DJ-Set von den WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS Zwillingen.

►Donnerstag 26.11. düsterer-knallharter Postcore, episch und apokalyptisch, von BURIED INSIDE und TOMBS. Geht so grob Richtung ISIS, ENVY und GODFLESH. Aber natürlich besser. Und perfekt um sich so richtig sturmattackenmäßig die Ohren durch- und den Kopf frei pusten zu lassen.

►Freitag 27.11. ORCHID indie dance riot pop electro queer Party mit den DJs SMARTNOB und EVE MASSACRE.

Die wahrscheinlich letzte neue Nachricht zu unseren Veranstaltungen 2009 betrifft SILVESTER ST. ALONE. Das ist unsere kleine Silvesterparty im Zentralcafe, bei der DJs von SUB:CITY, CONFUSED, ELECTRIC PONY NOISES, OH NO NOT AGAIN!, KILL THE POOR und ORCHID auflegen werden. Wieder für 5€ und so eine halbe Stunde nach dem Knallereiwahnsinn geht’s los.

Für 2010 gibt’s jetzt auch schon einiges Neues:

Beim URCHIN AID Festival am 09.01. werden THE GAP, TRAVELLING JACK und L.A. CRASH spielen. Das Ganze ist ein Benefiz für Straßenkinder in Ecuador. myspace.com/urchinaid

Am 22.01. gibt’s wieder ein IT’S THE BEAT, diesmal mit keinem geringeren als RUSTIE (Warp Rec., Wireblock / Glasgow UK) als Gast, neben HUDSON MOHAWKE und UNTOLD der wunderbarste Act in der spannenden Musik, die sich in Grobritannien gerade aus Dubstep, Hiphop und Elektro heraus zu einem ganz neuen Dancefloor Sound herausentwickelt. Zum Reinhören hier z.B. ein feiner RUSTIE Mix für das FACT Magazin.

Am 06.02. haben die ELECTRIC PONY NOISES Besuch aus UK: Die FILTHY DUKES(Fiction Rec., London UK) kommen als Gast DJs.

Am 3. März freuen wir uns auf DIE AERONAUTEN, die schon viiiel zu lange nicht mehr hier gespielt haben mit ihrem prima schnoddrigen Soulpunk-Indiepop. Jetzt gibt’s endlich wieder ein neues Album und da kommen die sympathischen Schwitzer auch mal wieder auf Tour.

Noch weiter in der Zukunft: Für den 27.4. haben wir euch ein großartiges Dreierpack zwischen Ambient Postrock und Noiserock eingeladen: NADJA aus Kanada, die ambienten Shoegazer Sound mit Drones und Doom Metal verbinden. OVO aus Italien mit brachialem experimentellem Noise. Und last but gewiss nicht least: THRONES, alias JOE PRESTON (Mitglied der Drone Metal Pioniere EARTH, spielte auch bei den MELVINS und SUNN O))) mit), der für brilliante Musik zwischen Sludge, Americana und Doom Metal steht.

DANCE YOURSELF TO DEATH aus Toronto sind wie dafür geschaffen, endlich mal wieder mit dem Gerücht aufzuräumen, der Musikverein würde immer nur so komplizierte Bands veranstalten, die sich nicht mit Nennung nur einen Genres beschreiben ließen: DANCE YOURSELF TO DEATH spielen Indiepop, straight und simpel. Schöne Melodien treffen auf herzerwärmende Texte und eine grundsympathische Ausstrahlung. Denkt an 60 STORIES oder auch THE ORGAN, vielleicht auch ein wenig an FLEETWOOD MAC. Straight ist an der Band allerdings nur die Musik: Es ist eine all queer Band, 3 Mädels, 1 Junge und… nein, er íst ausnahmsweise mal nicht der Schlagzeuger.

Wenn man LONSKI & CLASSEN seit Jahren nicht schon als Heroen der Berliner Off-Musikszene kennen würde, könnte man beim Hören ihrer neuen Platte Climbing on branches (matrosenblau/ indigo) meinen, dass dies der aktuelle heisse Scheiss aus Kanada oder New York wäre: grosser elegischer Pop (mit leichten Anleihen bei Radiohead, Sea and Cake, …)! Die extrem wandlungsfähige Kopfstimme (die mit den Begriffen “cotton mouth” und “ätherisch” nur unzureichend beschrieben ist) von Lukas Lonski kombiniert mit seinem Neil Youngschen Gitarrenspiel verschmilzt mit den einfachen schleppenden Rhythmen von Schlagzeuger Felix Classen zu sich langsam aufbauenden extrem dramatischen Stücken Indiepop.

Mit BURIED INSIDE aus Ottawa kommt eine der besten und auch härtesten Postcore-Bands der letzten Jahre ins K4. Ähnlich wie ISIS auen sie langsam Wände auf, aber steigern sich dann viel tiefer und härter in verzweifelte Parts, die am Ehesten an ENVY erinnern. Dem Genre nicht ganz unüblich arbeiten sie konzeptartig. Das aktuelle Album “S poils Of Failure” enthält lediglich römische Songnummern und keine Titel. Die Texte und deren Ideen stehen bei Buried Inside sehr zentral. Sie behandeln zeit- und sozialphilosophische Themen, die durch zusätzliche Kommentare im Booklet ergänzt werden, wobei der Interpretationsspielraum eher erweitert wird oder sich zusätzliche Denkanstöße ergeben. Der Tenor ist düster und apokalyptisch und entwickelt mit der Musik zusammen eine große Wucht, deren Intensität seinesgleichen sucht.

TOMBS könnte man genauso wie Buried Inside dem Postcore zuordnen. Die musikalischen Gemeinsamkeiten sind allerdings eher gering. Tombs arbeiten eher mit einem kalten und verhalltem Sound, der an Black Metal erinnert. Ein Kommentar auf ihrem Youtube-Video zog den nachvollziehbaren, aber etwas zu kurz greifenden Vergleich “Joy Division on Black Metal”. Dies wird Tombs schon alleine wegen ihrer Eigenständigkeit nicht gerecht. Zudem sind sie rhythmisch sehr abwechslungsreich und haben über weite Strecken ihres aktuellen Albums “Winter Hours” fast schon vertrackt zu nennende Lieder. In manchen Momenten erinnern sie auch mal an die seligen GODFLESH.

ORCHID ist eine Party mit queerem Background. ‘Queer’ steht zum einen für einen Teil der trans/schwul/lesbischen Community, die die Nase voll hat von veralteten Klischees und Schlager-Kitsch-House-Music-Parties. Hier rotieren stattdessen Nuwave Elektro, Indietronics, Queercore und Diskopunk auf den Plattentellern – beispielsweise von Hercules & Love Affair, Patrick Wolf, Hot Chip, Fever Ray oder Le Tigre. ‘Queer’ steht gleichzeitig aber auch für Menschen, die sich nicht als schwul/lesbisch oder hetero, als männlich oder weiblich definieren wollen (und müssen). Queers sind sich bewusst, dass es weit mehr Gender gibt, als die zwei im Mainstream unserer hetero-normativ geprägtem Gesellschaft vorgegebenen. Queers setzen dem ein buntes Durcheinander von Androgynität und spielerischem Gendercrossing entgegen. Das soll gefeiert werden. Und eben nicht mit der x-ten rosa-Mainstream-House-Großraumdisco-Party, sondern im angenehm undergroundig-gemütlichen Rahmen des Zentralcafé im K4.

This week is going to be horrible. Professors at Columbia think it must be amusing to make major projects due back to back. Thanks guys!

Music has been a major part of my weekend/week. While I am staring blankly at my computer working in the computer program Rhinoceros 3D, I need a nice techno/remix beat playing to keep me going.

The first song I’ve chosen in my mini playlist is in honor of the concert I had to miss on Thursday. Yes. I missed the Dragonette concert in NYC. The reason being a mistake by the ticket sellers, Ticketweb.com. (Never buy from them, please). Their website said the concert was 18+. I am over 21 but bought tickets for friends who were under 21. Essa não é nova, mas eu realmente não tinha tomado conhecimento até assistir ao Top Top da MTV noite passada.

Pois veja você a cena, na premiação de Melhor Vídeo para o MTV Europe Music Awards em 2006, Kanye West perde o prêmio para o vídeo Justice VS Siman – We Are Your Friends. E qual foi a reação de Kanye ao ver o seu vídeo perder? Subir no palco e falar um monte de merda, óbvio.

Pois a prepotência do cara é tanta que ele pega o microfone e diz coisas como: “o meu vídeo custou 1 milhão de dólares, eu tinha Pamela Anderson, eu saltei de um precipício”, “se eu não vencer o show perde credibilidade”. Hahahaha, quem perdeu credibilidade com essa foi ele, é muita arrogância pra um cara só. O pior é que a escolha não é feita por jurados, e sim pelo público. Então se o vídeo do Kanye é tão melhor assim, por que será que o público não escolheu ele? Vai se fuder Kanye.

Pompadour’d British pop sensation, Esser, has mysteriously managed to become famous…despite his extreme lack of comfort with singing in general. Maybe some of you chaps across the pond will know who/what I’m talking about.

Watch his single “Headlock” and you’ll know what I mean. And if you don’t, take the plunge into my absolute and very scientific breakdown: Esser Is One Of The Most Awkward Performers Ever (peer-reviewed by JStor. Well, not yet. But soon.)

Groovy, right? It’s so hip it looks like it was made 20 years ago. Up until :34, you think, “Hey, this is pretty well directed! Look how nonchalant he’s being!”

Then :44 rolls around, and you start wondering, “Esser…is everything okay at home?”

At :49, the pathetic swaying of the hips (or “dancing”, as the English call it) just got me worried. There’s a fine line between fascinating disinterest and a lead-singer with mild autism, my friends.

As I watched this on TV, I kept waiting for some stills from “This is England” to start popping up. How disappointed I was!!

The video continues, with the stereotypical school children dancing and an awkward incorporation of Esser with choreography.

It’s one thing to do awkward things and not give a fuck, it’s quite another to let your embarrassment be syndicated on a global scale:

Wow. Just…wow.

His next video, “I Love You”, is equally hard to watch. You just feel so bad for him…and not because he’s getting food thrown at his face. Lord knows Matt and Kim didn’t mind (nor did DikDik or JUSTICEvsSIMIAN’s trashed “friends“, or even their “Hustler” for that matter. )

His video for Work it Out isn’t much better, either.More glitz and budget, yet it runs rife with dorky aliens and a cumbersome space suit.

I feel so uncomfortable from these videos that I’m not quite sure what to say… except: Michael Cera, where were you on the whole good-awkward/bad-awkward lesson plan? Esser could use a few pointers.

Instead, Esser, watch Blur: Best Of, take a shower, then get back to me. Don’t forget to study Damon Albarn’s performances, and be prepared for a Quiz on How to Make Eye Contact With The Camera.

It is just over a week until our show at the Block Party 2, I decided too release some video of my Vj installation working, so i can give people a clear understanding of what i am trying to achieve. it’s a work-in-progress prototype filmed in my room, The size of the projections and blocks will be bigger in the show.

I have put compiled a new Showreel with all off are latest loops, So we can keep fans up-to-date with our work, The release of this Showreel has been aimed at our target audience. The timing was carefully chosen, the general aim is to to remind everyone that COMIX are more than alive and performing in venues nearby!

After the most recent conversation with Tim(W.a.y.f), I decided to spend time working on visual content for the event, I was eager to create visuals for the stage decor. The plan is to have three solid blocks built with foam board that will be attached to the wall by thin wire, these will be lit by chopped up projected motion graphics mapped onto it by visuals that will be specifically designed for it. The idea off these visuals is to replace traditional LEDs and stage decor with projections.

I wanted the blocks off foam board to be slightly more interesting, maybe have different sizes and shapes. and placed in interesting areas all around the stage, this was the vision I originally had, this is physically possible, but not possibly in reality because the final details of where the stage is going too be, how much space I have to work with and where it can be placed ‘legally’ cannot be confirmed until the very last few days off prior to the event, this would of left me with very little time to create and chop visuals up, with this in mind, I thought it be beneficial too keep the mapping simple, so on the day of the event, mapping the decor will be easier and faster giving me more time too work the other elements in the venue.

I want all off the visuals on all off the screens in the venue too be triggered off by the output of the bands and the DJs from the main mixer deck, These are some recent tests using sounds from ableton live too modul8:

In the past few months, me and Sam have been developing and building content and visual style for the block party, with live performances in venues across Dorset, we have been working with similar targeted audiences to the people that we are expecting to come to are show!

Tim from We Are Your Friends head office rang me to check if everything was going smoothly with organizing and planning the performance on May 2nd. He gave me feedback off the 3d project plan that me and Sam created for him, he thinks the stage will be moved further to the right of the building, his biggest concern is the venues lamp shades where the pool table is normally placed, he thinks it could be quite tough to remove it, i am slightly concerned that it might interfere with the visuals. Tim said that we cannot confirm details such as these until the final week/10 days, he said until then, he advises us to work on the visual content (the visuals that we will use when we perform) and music that we want to play.

Whilst I had the opportunity to talk to him, I wanted to discuss a new idea, I wanted to make the visuals on the projectors more interactive with the sound, I figured it be interesting if i could use sound to trigger off  the opacity, size, movements and effects of the visuals on the screens that will surround the bands and performers, He did not see a reason why we could not do this! I mentioned to him what type of cables that I think will be needed, and luckily for us, the sound technicians that are responsible for the sound will have the required equipment for me too have the opportunity too sync the sound of the bands/djs outputs with the visuals on screen, i feel it will be a slick addition to the overall performance that will inevitably make the whole event more interesting and exciting! Very interactive!

In this video below, I show how I transfered sound output to modul8 on a different machine, and a example off some colour effects triggering off with sound.

We went too the venue again to get additional photos to help us with designing a 3D template to help us show our manager and lectures what exactly we want to achieve and produce in are venue. We had already taken photos but the venue was too busy and we found it too difficult too create a 3d view with the busy imagery that we managed to acquire!

Today I finished producing a visual driven project plan for our venue in the Block Party 2 Event. The main Event manager Tim Brandwood knew what we wanted to do and, how to express ourselves live at the show, but he wanted a clear visual representation off our ideas, so he can give us feedback on our ideas.

BLOCK PARTY 2, VENUE: Inferno

I think it was vital for me and Sam to visit the venue with our employer and see what is possible in the venue.

The Venue is long and narrow, this is an advantage, people can walk past the venue and will be able to see the band on the stage right at the end of the room. The idea at the moment is to have the end blocked out to the public so there is enough room for the stage where bands and Djs will perform, with the Vjs on the right hand side controlling the 3d mapping that will be mapped out too the stage.

The venue already has five screens, this is very convenient for Sams instillation, this already gives us a lot of power, and gives is a great head-start, the screens are all around the venue, so controlling the mood of the venue will be in our hands.

At this point, it looks as though the venue will be fine for what i want to achieve,  however i am slightly concerned if we can bend the rules of health and safety, i am worried that the venue will be too lit up, it is vital that around the stage at the end of the venue the area is as dark as possible so the projections mapping the stage will be clear and effective.

We have a meeting with are employers within the next week, I will then know what bands will be confirmed, this is a important factor because I need to know what music they are going to play so i can reflect the mood of the visuals that i will project onto them…

I saw this exciting and interesting mapping using projections and VVVV, I have been looking into how I can use this as a way of making are event more exciting and fun, possibly projecting this kind of 3d mapping as a introduction to the venue! I think it would be an interesting task for me to try and take this projection style and morph it into my own style!

I felt it was vital to get as much experience dealing, managing Bands and performing visuals with them as I plan to have bands playing in mine and Sam  venue in the BLOCK party, the images below shows us performing with the Crystal Fighters (who recently signed two singles with Kitsune Maison) and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs

In preparation for are live show on May 2nd, we performed a 6 hour Visuals with Music set at We Are Your Friends (SELL OUT!). Using the results from my Colour verses Music questionnaire, Different visuals were specifically chosen to go with certain music genres to help bend the mood of the dancefloor, We noticed how Guitar driven music with Bright/Rapid graphics created a ecstatic mood on the floor. Whilst more Bass driven music with Bolder/darker colours dropped the tempo of the movement on the dancefloor but created a vibrant bounce..To help promote our live performance in May, we decided to record a live set from at the We Are Your Friends second year Birthday and release it free on the internet, it is 15 minutes of varied music styles that will be reflected in our Live Show in May:

Executive Summary

Objective

For mine and Harry’s Extended major projects we have both been working on designs that take on and use similar technology’s. Over the recent months we have both been dedicating our time to the rise of our new new Audio-Visual (a.k.a AV or VJ’s) group Comix. This has not been just a hobby but a look into our future career paths. So far we have performed at a number of venues and are now in a position where are being sort out by clients to use our VJ skill set to help expand their shows. We have just been offered our largest event yet hosting over 2500 people and co ran by BBC Radio 1. The date of this event falls on May 2nd, five days before our EMP hand-in. Our proposal, is that we wish to combine what we have already developed for our EMP’s with this event to produce, in theory, one massive arts installation combining Music, Art, Video, Film and many other forms media. We have been given free run of the venue in question and all decisions for the event have to go through us. With your permission we would like to combine our efforts in this project and use it towards our EMP. We are not asking to forget everything we have doe so far but to instead update our current learning agreements to meet this new criteria. We feel that this not only Incorporates the EMP brief but also would help immensely with our chosen career choice.

Goals
- Create an immersive environment within a night club setting that can alter the moods and emotions of
the audience.
- Perform a Audio Visual show to a live audience.
- Present the final outcome with video footage and presentation at our final crit along with how we
adapted our present work to evolve this new event.
- Produce a write-up in book form that will include images and text describing the processes involved
with this event.
