I’m kind of constantly amazed at how much the ting ting’s are managing to milk their debut album “We Started Nothing.” That said, I’m definitely not complaining as I love each and every track on that CD and then some. For example, they just released a new remix of a pretty old track featuring Wale. Really, you can add Wale to anything and I’m there. Check it out below plus another one of my favorite Wale remixes.

Aprovechando que visitan en próximas fechas, el BBK Live 2009 que se celebra en Bilbao, os presentamos para quien no conozca todavía, al grupo The Ting Tings.

Esta banda inglesa de pop rock esta formada por Jules de Martino a la bateria y Katie White a la voz y guitarra. Su álbum de debut “We started Nothing”, no ha parado de recibir alabanzas, y en algunos certámenes musicales, ha sido considerado el mejor álbum del pasado año. Recordemos que publicaron su disco a mediados de mayo del año pasado.

Su primer gran éxito “That’s not my name”, tiene la curiosidad de que fue editado por un pequeño sello en el 2007. Luego se ha incluido en su primer álbum. Este single, es pegadizo desde sus primeras notas. Destaca por su sencillez, y quizás sea esto, lo que haya convertido a esta canción, en un éxito.

No solo su disco ha recibido galardones, ya que el video de su  canción “Shut Up And Let Me Go” fue premio MTV al Mejor Vídeo, que viene a unirse a una lista de reconocimientos que os detallo a continuación. Fue mejor álbum del año 2008 en los Ivor Novello Awards, de gran prestigio ya que el jurado son los propios compositores. En la final compartió cartel con Coldplay y su Viva la Vida, y con el RockFerry de Duffy, casi nada!!!. También ha sido UK Festival Awards a la Mejor Actuación en Festival y Artista Revelación. Os recuerdo que sonó y dejó huella en el festival de Glastombury del 2007. Fue elegido por los críticos como tercer mejor grupo del año en la BBC Sounds of 2008. Finalmente también cosecharon el Vodafone Live Music Awards al Mejor Concierto y Border Breakers Award al Mejor Álbum.

We Walk

El sol brilló al puro estilo de una anacrónica primavera en la gran ciudad… ayer no llovió (al menos aquí en el poniente de la ciudad), y el sol se dejó ver este domingo desde las 11 de la mañana.

Un día como hoy se antoja escuchar a bandas que nos inyecten algo de movimiento, y el dúo inglés que se hace llamar The Ting Tings suele ser una buena sugerencia. Más allá de las conocidas y reconocidas, Shut Up And Let Me Go, Great DJ o That’s Not My Name, el álbum completo, We Started Nothing (2008), vale mucho la pena. Al detenernos en tracks como Be The One, que con la dósis adecuada de movimiento toca temas comunes en las relaciones amorosas, nos damos cuenta de que Katie y Jules podrían evolucionar de una forma interesante en un futuro. El Bilbao BBK Live es un festival que se celebra desde 2006 en Bilbao.
La edición de este año que se celebra el 9, 10 y 11 de julio reune a un buen grupo de grupos que hacen que merezca la pena asistir. (Comentaré brevemente aquellos que me parezcan destacados)

The Ting Tings (Banda de rock pop con un elevado toque electrónico y yo diría futurista, en cuanto a sonido, formada por Jules de Martino y Katie White en 2006. Su primer y único disco We Started Nothing publicado en 2008, merece ser escuchado. Canciones como That’s no my name os sonarán mucho y otras como Great DJ os engatusarán tanto como lo hicieron amí. Muy recomendables).
Vetusta Morla (Pocos no conocen ya a esta banda de indie originaria de Tres Cantos, Madrid que canta en castellano -¡Aleluya!-. Esta banda nacida en 1998 ha tenido que esperar a 2008 para publicar su primer disco largo tras muchas demos y algún que otro LP.  Su primer “largo” Un día en el mundo nos deja imaginar un renacimiento de la movida musical madrileña que puede estar fraguándose bajo los nombres de bandas como esta. Destacando canciones como Copenhague que nos dejan con letras muy conseguidas.)

We Started Nothing è un album che ormai ha un anno di vita ma che io sto ascoltando solo da alcuni mesi e devo dire che le 10 canzoni che i Ting Tings hanno inserito nel loro album di esordio colpiscono subito e ti restano dentro, anche dopo molti ascolti.
“I Ting Tings sono un gruppo britannico di musica indie elettronica formatosi nel 2006 e composto da Katie White e Jules De Martino.[...] Dopo essere stati in tour per le università inglesi nel 2007 i Ting Tings firmano un contratto con la Columbia Records, che produce il singolo Great DJ nel 2008 e che ottiene un ottimo successo radiofonico in diversi paesi in Europa, ed anticipa il loro album di debutto We Started Nothing, che viene pubblicato il 18 maggio, in contemporanea con un nuovo singolo That’s Not My Name e Shut up and let me go, che porta il gruppo al numero uno nel Regno Unito.” (fonte Wikipedia).
The Ting Tings è gruppo molto recente, che speriamo non si fermi a questo singolo album ma che ci regali altre belle canzoni. Quello che colpisce è la carica e la forza che trasmette ogni singola canzone: un mix di indie, pop, rock, dance, elettronica… sonorità di vario tipo dove comunque prevale una batteria che dà un ritmo sostenuto a tutti i brani.
Oltre alle stra-famose hit Great-Dj e Shut Up And Let Me Go ci sono pezzi anche un pò più “tranquilli” come Be The One e la bellissima We Walk…
We Started Nothing non sarà un album profondo o dalle melodie di alto livello ma ci regala comunque 40 minuti di musica leggera, allegra, ben ritmata e di grande impatto.

Chequeando un dia la MTV vi estos videos y me gustó mucho la chica… y también los dos temas. Katie White se llama ella y el grupo (dúo, de hecho; el otro miembro es el bateria Jules de Martino), The Ting Tings. Son un pequeño fénomeno indie-dance británico, de entrada fácil y tirar al poco rato. En poco  más de un año consiguieron el apoyo del New Musical Express (NME) y fueron un boom en MySpace, y de ahí a grabar disco para una multi, We Started Nothing (2008). Un divertimento entretenido.

A pesar de parecer un hype de estudio, resulta que también tocan en vivo. Triunfaron en el Glastonbury 2007 y estaran en el BBK Live el próximo julio. Keep your head es otro estupendo tema de su debut, aquí en video en video en directo… y a pesar de contar con algunas bases pregrabadas no suena mal

So the Ting Tings returned to Vancouver last night, and after all I’d heard about the live show I wasn’t going to miss the duo a second time (third, if you count the misfire at CMW in Toronto). This goes against my innate indie-rock snobbery, which states that if I miss a band the first time, and it gets more popular by its second go-round, I am beholden to dismiss the act as overrated. Especially if, as in the case of the Ting Tings, the show had been sold out months in advance.

The Ting Tings are not, however, overrated. What the Manchester band (most likely) is, is a flash-in-the-pan, but a great one. I can’t imagine a second album from these guys (drummer/guitarist Jules De Martino and singer/guitarist/fashion plate Katie White) living up to the charm and energy of We Started Nothing, their debut, but there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the ride while we can.

The Ting Tings circa 2009 is a lean, mean dance machine, with barely enough material to fill an hour but almost all of it first rate. Needless to say, the highlights were what anyone who’s heard the singles would expect—the title track, “Great DJ” and, for a roof-raising encore, “That’s Not My Name”. Surprises were few, but the Goth-tinged “We Walk”—one of the album tracks that demonstrates there may be more to this band than catchy pop tunes and dance beats—was a great set-opener: disarmingly dark yet punchy.

And at a show where the girls outnumbered the guys, White—in blue tights, red shoes, and funky hat pulled down over her eyes —was the evening’s hero, posing for photos to satisfy cellphone shutterbugs and bounding onto De Martino’s drum riser to play guitar in a rock-star fashion that brought cheers from the crowd. It won’t last forever, but right now at least, the Ting Tings are deservedly at the top of the indie-pop/dance heap.

A brit indie-pop duó, a The Ting Tings már sokadik (nem igazán számoljuk) klipjével rukkolt elő a ‘We Started Nothing’ című lemezről, de ez a mostani egészen színvonalasra sikeredett. Gondoltuk nézzétek inkább ezt a Barátok Közt helyett, úgy hogy klikk tovább a ‘We Walk’ videoért!

O álbum de estreia dos britânicos The Ting Tings continua a fazer sucesso, agora também nos EUA, onde o duo já tem concertos marcados. De “We Started Nothing” já pularam cá para fora quatro singles. O mais recente é “We Walk”, que também já tem direito a vídeo.

Record labels need to stop doing videos for different countries because the visual is stunted the second time around.

Panic At The Disco – Pretty. Odd. <– Very different from their debut, but still good. And “Nine In The Afternoon” was easily one of the best music videos of the year!

The B-52’s – Funplex <– My mom actually bought this one, but I like it, so I just counted it as being in my collection. It sounds like the B-52’s, all futurized.

Mariah Carey – E=MC2 <– Not her best, but still pretty good. My favorite song off it is “I’ll Be Lovin’ U Long Time”.

Ashlee Simpson – Bittersweet World <– Awesome! Her best so far in my opinion.

 Weezer – Weezer (Red Album) <– Like always, totally awesome. I love how they experimented with different sounds and even had members other than Rivers sing!

The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing <– Quite unique-ly awesome.

Katy Perry – One Of The Boys <– Love it! I don’t care what people say about her, she’s awesome.

Camp Rock Soundtrack <– Definitely the best DCOM soundtrack since HSM2’s.

Miley Cyrus – Breakout <– ”It’s Miley!” All the songs are good except “Breakout” and the  nightmarish (sorry, Miley) remake of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”. While the best song is definitely “Goodbye”.

Jonas Brothers – A Little Bit Longer <– So I finally gave in and became a Jonas Brothers fan. Best song? “Can’t Have You”. (though they really should have given less vocals to Nick, and more to Joe.)

The Veronicas - Hook Me Up <– Yay, finally! This CD came out last year in Australia! Quite awesome.

Demi Lovato - Don’t Forget <– Awesome debut, I love her! Definitely the rockingest and most vocally talented of the Disney stars.

The Pussycat Dolls – Doll Domination <– Pretty good, I bought the deluxe edition with the bonus disc. Favorite track? “Love The Way You Love Me”. Should definitely be a single! Springtime, maybe?

P!nk - Funhouse <– First P!nk CD I’ve ever bought! (I have a burnt copy of M!ssundaztood) Really good, and the video for “So What” was definitely one of the best of the year!

David Cook – David Cook <– A little disappointing, he could do so much better! Best tracks are definitely “A Kiss On The Neck” (hidden track!) and “Bar-ba-sol”.

Kevin Rudolf – In The City <– Awesome debut! I love “She Can Get It”!

Britney Spears – Circus <– Yay, Britney’s back! I (of course!) bought the deluxe edition with the bonus tracks, and it’s (of course) awesome! But what’s with “Radar”? That was already on Blackout!

Fall Out Boy – Folie A Deux <– They just keep getting more awesome! I love how they experimented with new sounds on this album. I especially love “w.a.m.s.”.

The All-American Rejects – When The World Comes Down <– Good! My favorite track is definitely “I Wanna”.

Leidsin siis minagi endale mõned ühikud aega, et käesolevale aastale muusikaliselt küljelt tagasi vaadata. Ei ütleks, et miski eelmise aasta In Rainbows’ile vastu saaks, aga 3 ägedat albumit ma siiski leidsin.

3. The Ting Tings – We Started Nothing

Inglise popduo kinkis meile äärimiselt catchy plaadi, mille gruuvivas taktis on võimatu jalgu tatsumast hoida. Tõsiselt, kui keegi küsiks mult ideaalse popalbumi valemit, juhataksin neid selle plaadi juurde. See on seksikas ja särav. We Started Nothing on igast küljest parem, kui Britney/Madonna/kellegi kolmanda ookeanitaguse naisstaari igavad ja ajuvabad üllitised. Aitäh selle värskenduse eest.

2. Portishead – Third

Sellesse albumisse oli raske sisse elada, aga kui sellega hakkama saanud, on raske väljuda. Lood sellel plaadil rõkkavad pingest. Ja teisest küljest on ta nii ilus, lausa maagiline. See heliderikkus ning selle keskel hõljumine. See inglise trip-hopparite kolmas kauamängiv üllatas mind tõsiselt.

1. Beck – Modern Guilt

Alternatiivrokkar Becki kaheksandat stuudioalbumit on paljud nimetanud parimaks, mis ta selle aastatuhande sees on välja andnud. Ning tõepoolest, koostöös Danger Mouse’iga produtseeritud plaat ON hea. Becki ühiskonnakriitilised sõnad on fantastilised ja tõestavad, et tegu on ühe suurima poeediga tänapäeva muusikas. Meloodia on unikaalne ja loov. Ta häälele, mis on üks minu vaieldamatuid lemmikuid, ei ole vanus (veel?) liiga tegema hakanud. DM on lugudele andnud müstilise, veidike tumedamates toonides lihvi. Kõik see kokku teeb Modern Guiltist ühe 2008. aasta parima albumi.

We Started Nothing - The Ting Tings

Well… i’ll be honest, at first I really didn’t quite ‘get’ the Ting Tings and what their music was actually about. But eventually I purchased the album to find out what all the fuss was about and gave it a good listen and to say the least, it’s surprisingly catchy for such repetitive lyrics and beats.

Firstly, you may have heard the singles, “Great DJ”, “Shut Up And Let Me Go”, and “That’s Not My Name” which are all extremely catchy songs and great choices for singles. These songs make “Who Let The Dogs Out?” sound sporadic and fresh, in fact many of the songs by the Ting Tings are very repeititve, but they know how to a create a song that shifts in tone, key, and tempo from start to finish to bring the listener on a journey through the song rather than idly listening.

However that is not to suggest that the music is deep and intense, in fact it’s clear that it intends to be the opposite, light, fun, and edgy music that you can sing along to easily.  Roughly half of the album sounds like it’s coming from your neighbours garage, very raw, basic, but yet catchy. Prime examples of this would be the title track and “Traffic Light”which are utterly forgettable yet relaxing.

The album’s best song is undoubtedly “Shut Up And Let Me Go” which is fantastic, the beat is so engaging and the vocals are very edgy, the video is also something I would highly reccomend upon first listen of this song. Other Highlights include “Fruit Machine” which I interpret to be a song about Pokie Machine’s, “You keep playing me like a fruit machine, putting in change systematically, winning streak that you had over me, turned into your broken tradgedy”, it has a good message! “We Walk” is up tempo and defintely one of the songs worth a listen.

Overall the Top Listens on the Album would be “Shut Up and Let Me Go” “That’s Not My Name” “Keep Your Head” and “We Walk”

The album gets a rating of 2.5 stars. They really come out with some great music, and they evidently have diverse talents, but it would be nice to listen to a sophmore album from them that has a few less of the 12 year old garageband songs, and more of wha they seem to do best, light, catchy, up tempo anthems. Their recent live performances of late seem to suggest their second effort may be even better.

I make no promises, but here’s a quick and dirty review of The Ting Ting’s “We Started Nothing”.

If you watch TV, you may have heard of The Ting Tings and not even know it.  Their song “Shut Up And Let Me Go” (off this very album) was featured on a recent iPod commercial.  The first time I listened through the album, I thought it lost a lot of steam towards the end.  That was only a first impression, though.  On my second tear through I realized that it doesn’t do that at all.

If I had to describe the album as a whole, I’d use the phrase “infectious pop-dance with a side of indie-rock”.  The most danceable track of the bunch is easily the lead single “Shut Up And Let Me Go”.  It’s also the most catchy.  It’s also a song that I’ll only be able to listen to about another 2-3 more times before I’m sick of it.  The rest of the album doesn’t really have that problem with me.  “That’s Not My Name” has a real “Hey Mickey!” vibe to it (in a good way), and “Fruit Machine” is a fun, almost punkish reminder that women can definitely be a gamble (even if you’re on a “winning streak”).  “We Walk” is the track on the first listen through that I thought seemed out of place… every listen since, it’s grown on me, and I think it may be among my favorites.  Plus, the bridge “If nothing makes you feel good/then nothing makes you feel good” reminded me of the ol’ “Ghostbusters” line “Busting makes you feel good”, and I chuckled at few times at that.  My least favorite track of the bunch has to be the second-to-last song “Impacilla Carpisung”… mostly because of the multi-layered vocal tracks causing entirely too much confusion, and making much of the song sound like incoherent babble.

Overall, I really got more than I expected with “We Started Nothing”.  I definitely recommend it, especially if you’re looking for something pretty upbeat and catchy.  If you’re a fan of Tegan & Sara, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs or CSS, you’d definitely do well to pick this one up.
