Boss is putting in just the place it should be.,,The Executive Brand. We’ve noted the mentality of the go-getter, hustler, boss, don, etcetera. We’ve placed an emphasis on her attire and a small touch on his wear. Boss Black does both. Here in Germany we are able to catch a glimpse of an executive’s brand and staple ourselves as such. Ladies, what are you purchasing your Boss Man this holiday season. Place him in the brand that labels him best. Boss Black!

Yes, we know, this is not a hack, yet it just has the vibe of something we’ll likely be seeing in many small form-factor systems and wearable hacks in the future.

The USB Wireless Handheld Keyboard is a diminutive keyboard and mouse replacement with a passing resemblance to a BlackBerry PDA — where the screen has been replaced with a laptop-style trackpad sensor. This seems a shoo-in for home theater PC use; it’s unobtrusive and won’t look out of place on the coffee table alongside the universal remote. But any tiny system requiring only occasional input could likely benefit.

The keyboard layout is funky as heck, though likely adequate for its intended use of couch web-surfing and interactive messaging (or whatever wild applications our readers will surely come up with). A USB wireless receiver and a charging cable are included in the $62 package. Video after the break…

Wearable Chair is the Ultimate Invention Seriously, how is it possible that the wearable chair isn’t the hottest accessory around today when it was patented 30 whole years ago? Look at it! You strap it to the backs of your legs and you can just sit back and rest easy whenever you want! I wouldn’t have to submit to the cruel tyranny of standing under my own volition any longer! It’d be perfect for concerts, the subway or the unemployment line, where you’d presumably run into the inventor of these things, Darcy Robert Bonner. Now that this thing has been rediscovered after being lost for so long, it’s time to make the dream a reality

It’s in the Bag: Knitting Projects to Take & Make edited by: Kara Gott Warner If you haven

It’s in the Bag: Knitting Projects to Take & Make edited by: Kara Gott Warner

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out her interview.

When I first had the chance to review this book, I jumped at it. It looked really interesting. I have to say however, that this is one of those books that gets better and better the closer look you take.

With 60 patterns in five categories, there really is something in this book for everyone. The 10 pages of information including knitting basics, crochet basics, embroidery and all abbreviations make this a perfect book for a beginner. I could easily see taking this book, and going from a basic understanding of knit and purl and launching into cables, lace knitting and colorwork.

Another thing that makes this book great for the new-to-knitting is the easy and accesible way the patterns are laid out. The pages themselves feel rather inviting, with large, easy to read fonts and the occasional tip or personal anecdote to ease your knitting journey.

Please don’t make it out that this book is just for beginners though. I consider myself a fair to middling knitter and I found tons of patterns in here that I couldn’t wait to cast on. Here are a few that caught my eye.

There are accesories like the Luxurious Lace Collar:

(click any of the pics to enlarge)

Wouldn’t this make a great gift? It’s quick but super-stylish! As soon as I saw this one, it went on my ‘to-gift’ list. The best part is that it’s easily small enough to take around with you. (You can gift the results to whoever admires your project the most!) I may have to buy the gorgeous Lantern Moon Bag that is featured with this pattern, though.

There are also great wearables like the “Sleek, Stylish, Sleeveless Shirt” Now, you all know how much I love alliteration, so I couldn’t help but love this shirt. However the best thing about this shirt is that the shaping at the waist is done with ribbing. So you can cast on the stitches, work the stitch type as directed and continue on to the top. Honestly. There is no decreasing or anything. Isn’t that exactly what you want from a portable project, no need to tote instructions?

Speaking of wearables, don’t you just love this sweater for our furry friends? Despite the name this “Frilly Prilly Poncho” is elegant and dignified for either a girl or boy and is a great idea for keeping the less fluffy warm all winter long. (Hey, it works for us humans, right?)

Doesn’t this picture just make you purse your lips and say “awwww…”? The Nautical Stripes Onesie & Sunhat is probably the cutest thing you can make for the little man in your life. Just beware, if you take this pattern around with you, there is a good chance you will be mobbed with requests as those with their own little guy add this to their christmas list.

Out of all the great patterns in the “Home Adornments” section this particular one caught my eye because of its unique construction. The “Laced-Up Cables Afghan” is exactly what its name implies. You first create the cable panels, then lace them together using a crocheted chain (for those who haven’t done this before, it’s really simple trust me- plus you don’t even need to use a hook) This is a great way to take the sting out of knitting a blanket, and bonus, the panels will be quite easy to tote around with you, which an entire blanket wouldn’t be.

I know I already featured one baby look, but I had to recommend a pattern like this to any beginning lace knitters. I know that common knowledge is that “feather and fan” patterns are the ‘thing’ for new lace knitters, but if that has left you hopelessly frustrated try this one instead. This lace pattern is extremely easy and easy to see, and isn’t this dress just absolutely adorable? (Besides, all my friends seem to be having girls this year so this dress definitely caught my eye. Now I need one of them to have a boy so I can make the onesie too!)

Has your interest been perked yet? If so make sure that you check out Kat Coyle’s blog- www.katcoyle.com/blog/. Kat will spend some time with Laura Nelkin discussing her Andrea Beaded Cuffs. Also- Don’t miss Laura’s beading tutorial at Nelkin Designs.

My rating you ask? A perfect score, what else could I give to a book this good?

Oh, for crying out loud! While we were all giddy reporting on yesterday’s wonderfully done head-mounted computer, [Andrew Lim] of recombu.com comes along and essentially does the same thing with an HTC Magic handset and three dollars worth of Harbor Freight crap. Linux kernel, WiFi, accelerometer, the whole nine yards. Consider our collective ass handed to us.

Funny thing is, either of these could be considered The Consummate Hack. One flaunting the creator’s know-how with its custom-designed parts and delicate engineering, the other exhibiting a more punk flair with random scraps and off-the-shelf technology achieving much the same effect — a solution so obvious we were blind to it. Whatever your outlook, this is a great day to be a hacker!

Most wearable computers we’ve seen feature a head-mounted display tethered to a small PC system in a backpack or worn on a belt. Here’s a slick little system that does away with the cord, fitting the entire system in the glasses.

[Pascal Brisset’s] WXHMD is based on the tiny Gumstix Overo Fire computer-on-module which features a beefy, 3D-capable OMAP processor that runs Linux. The Gumstix is interfaced with a Vuzix VR920 head-mounted display that includes a three-axis accelerometer and compass. Tying these together is a custom video digital-to-analog converter board of [Pascal’s] own design, created using direct-to-PCB inkjet printing techniques. For less than $1,000 total in parts, the result is a spatially aware six ounce computer, with display and battery and all, that fits neatly over the bridge of one’s nose.

It’s a fantastic hack and a nicely documented project, though even the device’s creator himself questions whether having a pair of microwave transceivers and a LiPo battery strapped directly over one’s eyes and brain is such a good idea.

[thanks w3pt]

Van Cleef & Arpels Cartier Tiffany & Co. Solitaire Engagement Ring. First introduced in 1886

Van Cleef & Arpels

Cartier

Tiffany & Co. Solitaire Engagement Ring. First introduced in 1886, still popular today

Looking through my past posts, I realize that I practically never blog about jewellery! I guess this is because I’m not really into the luxury, trade-base commercial side of jewellery which is pretty much what the industry is mostly made up of. I really think that there’s been significant progress in how people approach jewellery, though. It used to be completely all about the showcasing of status and wealth, but these traditional uses of jewellery and its role in society are in constant reassessment.

Mah Rana’s set of brooches with varying black surface finishes / textures that are designed to wear off and disintegrate to reveal the shine of the real gold beneath. (Inspired by Memento Mori jewellery)

Another Mah Rana creation, titled The Pearl and the Wisdom. The biscuit comes wrapped in an envelope on which ‘Good Fortune’ is written in. It is part of the series Jewellery is Life, which commentates on the importance of jewellery in society: you decide to wear jewellery or not, own it or give it to others.

Instead of being purely decorative, people are beginning to become more aware of the art and craft of jewellery as a sculptural medium that does more than just look pretty on the body as an accessory to clothing. Of course there is still a constant demographic of the extremely secure and wealthy who will always be supporters of the market of traditional luxurious goods, but with the economic recession a great percentage of the public no longer want to spend their hard-earned money on simply buying luxury. People are increasingly more concerned with saving up, recycling, and reusing.

Having a financial sensibility and sensitivity has become trendy and people are ashamed if they are found to be spending money excessively, especially if their peers are otherwise struggling. Vintage fashion is at its most glamorous peak; this is reflected in the contemporary designs and manufacturing of products, clothing, as well as jewellery. Precious gems and metals are often traded in for innovative uses of inexpensive materials. The notion of ‘Luxury’ and ‘Preciousness’ became more of a concept and an idea to express, redefining the boundaries and values that constitute luxury commodities.

Caroline Broadhead, who happens to be the jewellery course director at my uni, created this bangle to remind people of the extremely delicate but direct relationship we have with our jewellery. Our movements and the appearance of the bangle changes and affects one another over use. I think this is made of silver, threads, and maybe feathers.

Samantha Fung’s Royal Ring is made of silver and appears to hold a giant ‘diamond’ origami made of paper.

Agathe Saint-Girons’ Glass Cocoons completely encase the rings she made within them, presenting viewers and possible owners with a challenge: break the glass to obtain and wear the ring, or leave the object be and marvel at both its conceptual and aesthetic beauty from a safe distance.

Liesbet Bussche’s conceptual ‘Street Jewellery’ adorns the railings and chains of streets, probably to the oblivion of passing strangers.

I’m most interested in things that involve people rather than exclude them, and this shows in the kind of art that fascinates me. I love interactive and performance art that engage or bring people together. It’s so satisfying when I come across a piece that successfully evokes in people a sense of familiarity, something everyone can relate to, because personally that’s how I want my art to be.

Every lifestyle, gossip and fashion blog I visited today had advertising for ‘It’s On With Alexa Chung.” Can’t imagine that MTV’s show that airs at 3:30pm is gunning for my 29 year old viewership, but I still clicked through to see the latest on Ms. Chung. I was happy to see a section devoted to her style and a breakdown of the outfits she wears on the show. One item caught my eye:

They’re by Comme Des Garcons…and they’re fugly interesting aren’t they? At first glance I want to make fun, but the more I stare they start to grow on me. They’re the kind of shoes I’d SAY I’d wear, but never would. Although by February when the snow is piled high and toes are hidden beneath wool socks these may seem more appealing and wearable. If you’re feeling love for the barefoot shoes right now, head on over to snag a pair (they come in black too).

I don’t even like ruffles, but I’ve always liked Viktor & Rolf. They da bomb – the only ones who can somehow throw crazy dramatic silhouettes, colours and textures together without making things look mismatched. Their collections are always cohesive and dreamy. I like that practicality and issues of wearability are least important to them in their creations. Let other designers worry about that, we have enough t-shirts and different ways of wearing them.

Who says iPod’s are for adults?! Ok, yes, they absolutely are, but maybe your baby can work the iPod style? I have a ton of friends who are expecting and I’ve been looking for some unique baby clothes. I came across iPopMyBaby.com’s adorable line of iPod inspired baby onesies and tees:

They also have simpler iPod versions, each onesie or tee is about $19.95. Now I don’t just want an iPhone I want an iPhone onesie for my friend’s babies!
