Oh my gosh. Many, many near-death experiences today.

In a monumentally poor decision, I decided to forge ahead with my plans to visit my friend Christina in Columbia, S.C. despite the snowy Southern conditions.

I may say I’m a Yankee at heart, but I have very little experience driving in snow. My office closed at 3 p.m. this afternoon, and I immediately headed toward South Carolina. It took me two-and-a-half hours to get out of the perimeter. Absolute insanity.

The view from my parents' front porch

Seven hours after I left my office, I finally arrived at Christina’s apartment, hungry and tired. It’s about 230 miles from Atlanta to Columbia, and I was worried several times that I-20 would be shut down and I’d be forced to spend the night at a motel in middle of nowhere, Georgia. Expect many snowy pictures of beautiful Columbia, S.C.!

***

Thursday, I decided to debut my new heels with a silhouette I don’t normally wear. I generally favor a skinnier bottom with a “flowy” top, and I kind of went the opposite way with this one.

White tank: Target, Purple wrap top: Target, Skirt: Old Navy, Tights (two pairs): Target, Pumps: DSW

This Southern girl is ready to enjoy the first of two consecutive long weekends. And I think it’s time I invested in a new pair of gloves and a hat.

It is so cold here! I just wiped down my windows and the towel was soaked through. There have even been reports of snow in some areas–yes, it’s that cold. Yesterday, I braved the constant drizzle to go to Target and I was surprised that the thin spray wasn’t turning into flakes. My mom is in a state about the poor cats outside–we’ve set up covered boxes for them to take shelter. We’ve thought of letting them stay in our bath, but though they come in to eat, they are strays and don’t like to stay indoors for very long. We’re doing our best to help them weather this, er… weather.

We tried turning on our heater, but the air vents are near the fire alarms and it’s been so long since we’ve turned the heat up, that the smell of burning keeps making the alarms go off in an uproar of mad ear-splitting beeping. At least we know they still work.

I can’t wait for this front to pass. I like mild weather, nice cool breezes, not near freezing winds and rain.

The Man has got us down. In general aviation, The Man is the weather. And the FAA. And the Tower. A

The Man has got us down. In general aviation, The Man is the weather. And the FAA. And the Tower. And sometimes your instructor. Okay, I guess The Man can be a lot of things, but for the purposes of this admittedly inane post, The Man is the weather. Okay?

Today CFI and I were supposed to fly the 172 (the plane I train in) to a Class D airspace airport. We were going to pick up a plane that had been there for maintenance, and were bringing another pilot to fly the other plane back. My first passenger!

Reasons I was looking forward to this:

I get to fly

I get to go to a big, sweet airport with wide, forgiving runways

I get to explore Class D airspace (the most restrictive airspace I have yet to enter)

I get to talk to the tower which makes me feel like a fighter pilot

Reasons it could potentially have sucked:

17-year-old-that-already-has-his-private- license pilot/passenger silently judging my potentially crappy landing

Possibility of becoming mute and forgetting everything I know at the thought of talking to the tower

So mostly exciting.

But then it decided to mist and rain all day, which means we don’t get to fly. (tear!)

Why? Because there are certain minimum weather conditions you have to meet in order to fly. I fly only VFR (Visual Flight Rules) which means the quality of your ability to see the ground has to be at a certain level. Today only has 2 miles visibility and it’s getting worse and worse. The last thing you want to do is take off in okay conditions, only to have everything get worse and not be able to land.

Being able to see the runway is a good thing.

Aren’t you glad I write this blog? You would never know all this obvious stuff otherwise!

Maybe we’ll go up tomorrow. And if you’re nice to me, maybe – just maybe- I’ll tell you about it.

Help! Bouncing emails

…we still have a few emails coming right back at us. If anyone knows of anyone not receiving these emails, please shoot us a note. Ta!

Monday pick up

Our first pick up – eek, we’re SO excited. This pick up is for full share and “A” week members. All you “B” members out there – think of this as a heads up to the 29th.

Vegetables - we do not yet know what veges we will be getting – we’ll update you as soon as we know (this might be Monday!). As the season progresses things will get a little smoother and our farmers will get a little more used to giving us a heads up in good time

Fruit - the fruit share has a bit of a lag and doesnt start until weeks 3 & 4

Eggs – 1 dozen of the most delicious pastured eggs. (ps the farmer just told us that more eggs are available. Let us know if you want to get in on the cheapest, healthiest, organic protein out there!)

Wine – this week we have a bottle of the Bridge Vineyards 2007 Chardonnay. This light Chardonnay with crisp apple, elegant fruit, slate and a mineral finish will go superbly with a light lunch, spring time dinner or a chilled afternoon sip.

Remember – the wine share is open enrollment – so if you’d like to join shoot us an email or ask at distribution. The cost of the wine share is $360/ 180 for full / half share, or it can be pro-rated. Alternatively, if you’d like to just pick up a bottle of the wine share on the spot – we can pop it through for you at $18.

The growing season thus far – news from the farm

Ok. What is one of the coolest things about being in a CSA? The direct relationship you develop with your food. You get to know the family that grows it and the land which nutures it and the weather which affects it. Weather plays a BIG role in the harvest; too much sun, too much rain, too little rain, late frosts, early frosts can all change the size and amout of produce we see in our share.

Well, it’s been rather wet these last few weeks. Needless to say, its taking its toll on New York State Farmers… This basically means that we will begin a little slow but panic not! Remember that when the sun finally comes out (next week) those veges will grow like crazy and our farmers will do their best to make sure that when harvest becomes bountiful, your shares will beef up accordingly.

Williamsburg Walks

…we’re still walkin’! We’ll be on Bedford @ N.8th on Saturdays between 12 noon – 8pm for another few weeks yet. If anyone is up for helping out, doing a demo or just chatting up local food – come check us out. For more info and a great video: http://www.billburg.com/walks/

As I told Sergei, Rafa for the Grand Slam this year, yes. Then he can retire and go fish in Mallorca in peace.

He's unreal. And he tries so hard, I can't understand how people can possibly root against him. Humility I think is also underrated in any sport.

ANYWAY. This took over most of my day. It's snowing out and the light is this beautiful burnt pink-orange. I would take a picture if I thought anything but the naked eye could really capture it.

I like snow but it's completely FRIGID outside. That's unexciting for work tomorrow. Not that I'm excited about finishing that 'Russia: a due diligence story'-size report tomorrow anyhow. Sigh.

I realize, now more than at any other time, I should be happy that a) we're busy b) I have a job c) I have a job I like most of the time and that's interesting but… eh, I'm not sure that's enough sometimes, for me.

I'll tell you, it's hard being on a régime in this weather…

Thank heaven’s I was able to take it down…but here’s the rub:

It didn’t rain.

The storm hopped right over us. Talk about irritating. I run back outside (after checking the Weather Channel online, of course!) and begin re-hanging the wash.

And then it starts to sprinkle.

I hung it up anyway.

This weather is driving me nuts…
