I’ve been focused on Christmas lately, and haven’t had the chance to blog much recently.  Hopefully, the posts I’ve already collected here give you enough info to get your Smokies fix anyhow.  I just checked the stats, and just yesterday, more than 150 of you stopped by the blog.  I appreciate that.  I’ll be blogging more and more in the near future.  I also have a number of shows planned for the next month or so on the GoSmoky.com radio show.  I plan to talk to the Haywood County, North Carolina officials about how the rock slide is impacting the area.  That’s the area including Maggie Valley.  I’m also going to be scheduling another show based on a book on the Smoky Mountains.  This one will be lots of fun.  I just finished reading the book a few weeks ago, and it will be a show you’ll love.  Then, probably near the end of Jan, or early Feb, I’m planning on doing another show on skiing in the Smokies. The first shows on skiing in the Smokies that I did last year are some of the most popular episodes I’ve done.  And right now, that is a great thing to do in the Smokies.  You can check out the snow in the Smokies on our live webcams.  You can see it on most of the cams during the day, but feel free to check out the Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg cams where you can even see the snow at night.  Enjoy!

Gaylord's Snowman Snow Cam is watched around the world (photo from the Web site)

I’ve yet to see him dance around, but I’ve seen squirrels, deer and birds frolicking around the ever-smiling Snowman of Snow Cam fame as he stands watch in the northern Michigan woods near Gaylord, measuring the snowfall for Web cam cruisers around the world.

Okay, maybe the wildlife doesn’t actually frolic, but the critters do frequent the humble set-up, built by Ken Borton in his backyard and named one of EarthCam’s “25 Most Interesting Webcams” in 2006. He (Borton, not the Snowman) is also behind the Michigan Snow Cams network that stretches from the Thumb to the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, and includes the Mackinac Bridge from Mackinaw City. The Mighty Mac has another Bridge Cam at its northern end, in St. Ignace.

I occasionally check on the cameras linked through Pasty Central, especially the Main Street Calumet view. Love that architecture against the snow.

It’s no substitute for walking in a winter wonderland, but watching winter on a Web cam is a fun diversion when the wind is howling and the temperatures are below freezing.

Lighting is your most important investment in becoming a camgirl. Without proper lighting you can really interfear with how much money you could make from your chatters. Another thing to consider putting in some money into would be a good computer system and also a webcam or video camera, but your most important of all would be a good lighting set up.  I am pretty annoyed with camgirls who email me asking how they can make more money and they are working in the dark or have a poor light set up. How do you expect to make money when your chatters can not see you? Setting up your light is not as hard as some people think, you do not need to hire anybody to set up your lighting for you this is something very simple you can do by yourself.

Even if you have a cheap poor quality webcam or a lower quality webcam of the popular webcam brands you  can set up your lighting so that you look flawless each time you click broadcast now.  Idealy you want enough light so that your the main focal point of your video stream.  Don’t assume you can use your daylight and think it’s enough for broadcasting. Natural light moves constantly and it will change the quality of your video stream, and it will end up being poor and in result have your chatters complaining there is something wrong wtih your camera when it’s actually your lighting, and if your chatters are complaining about what is going with your camera or lights they won’t be focused on buying time with you in private chat.  You also want to make sure your light is evenly distributed so that way you do not have a light burst of light sitting in one place.

You want to have a minimum of 400 watts of light, if you can go higher then that is better. I use 500 watts of lights from proffesional studio lights it didn’t cost me that much for them I spent around $200 for the cheaper proffesional light set up. There is basically 3 lighting options out there you can use depending on your budget. You can use regular spot light bulbs that are 100 watts each, and place four lighs around you. You can find these lights at any local lighting store. Try getting halogen bulbs because they are camera friendly.

 You could also find lamps out there that have movable lamp heads so that way you can have lights at different angels but still keep them in balance.  Remember you want them to see you not complain there is something wrong with your camera.

It’s harder to find florescent bulbs that produce enough light, and if you do end up getting fluorescent bulbs make sure they are all the same white light and the highest wattage  they produce. which is more expensive then halogen lights.  This option is probably the cost effective, but for it to effective for making money you need to make sure you have the highest wattage available that is compatible with the lamps and also make sure you have the right amout of lamps around you.

Worker lights they come in 250 watts and 500 watts, but you will need about 2 or 3 of them to have an effective light set up. They are pretty much sold all over the place, but if you really can’t find one a home reno place will have them. They already come with a halogen bulb be extremely careful when handling them if you touch them without wearing gloves or a cloth you can risk having the bulb explode when you turn it on. They come in different sizes the stand ones are probably best to use for your broadcasting.

Proffesional lights are your best investment for video chatting. You can pretty much get them in photography stores and online photography store websites. They come in a vereity of price ranges so you can buy proffesional lighting equipment on a nice modest budget.  I find this the most effective to use thenregular lighting beause of how smooth quality appear on the camera.  If you spend some time making sure you have the best lighting set up you can afford you will notice how much you can make in a few hours of broadcasting live.

I have also added a links to lighting tip websites of how to set up your lighting system so that way you have the best lighting. Setting up your lights properly is basically a simple system that pretty much everyone who broadcast live video follows for a higher quality of video stream. The theree point lighting system is the most common method to use for setting up lights for filming video or broadcasting video.  Once you get this techinque you can set up lighting for virtually anything you can find a perfect diagram for the three point lighting system here.

Warning:  These lights get very hot so make sure to adequately use caution when using lights indoors and close to anything that could be flammable. If lights get very hot, please use your better judgment and shut them off.

Irruptions

Irruptions are a phenomenon that fascinates birders of all skill levels.  An irruption is an irregular and generally unpredictable winter influx of birds from northern regions, birds that get the heart pumping such as Bohemian Waxwing, Great Grey Owls and Snowy Owls.

Although a backyard birder is unlikely to encounter the owls, there is a strong possibility of receiving a visit from a Bohemian Waxwing. This bird is the large relative of the Cedar Waxwing that is a much more common and regular visitor. I have provided a link titled “Irruptions” that was written recently about Bohemian Waxwings irrupting in the State of Washington.  I urge you to read it.

The general consensus is that irruptions occur when there is scarcity of food in the normal wintering grounds.  This can be due to poor conditions such as very damp summers or unusually harsh winters.  Damp summers can prevent the insects from pollinating seed generating flowers which in turn makes winter berries and other seeds too scarce.  Likewise, the owls and other birds of prey at the higher end of the food chain will find less small birds and mammals to pounce on.

Any backyard birder in the northern States who cultivates seed bearing plants and fruit trees can expect to receive a visit from a true and exciting stranger at some point.  Be sure to visit our website and see the feeders that can make your backyard more enticing and the products that can enhance your hobby.  The “nature cameras” are a very popular item for those backyard birders looking to “get up close.”

If you’re using a webcam such as Logitech, Microsoft, Creative etc. You want to make sure you have installed the drivers properly to your computer. If you’re using a mac you will have to figure out how to install your web cam to your mac.  Then once your cam is connect, either the webcam software will pop-up and it will show your cam connected. If you’re using a mac and your not able to use a webcam or video device on your mac to test your camera is connect you can go to the website www.testmycam.com.

The website www.testmycam.com is all good to make sure your computer and web cam is ready to use for broadcasting on your web cam site and to test out lighting and your microphone or you can log into your model log-in page for your web cam site and test it in there before you go live in your adult video chat room.  Another method of testing if your web cam is connected to your computer is by opening an instant messenger platform Skype, MSN, Yahoo whatever you have on your computer. You would go into the web cam settings or audio/video settings you do not need to chat with anyone to test your web cam unless you want to.

You always want to make sure you have a good video card installed in your computer. You should have determine this when your purchase your computer. If you do not have one you can get them installed easily.  Now if you’re using a video camera and you want to turn it into a video web cam there is a lot more options involved. If your not really interested in learning some technical stuff then getting a webcam is your best bet for now.

Connecting with a RCA cables is probably the simplest way to turn your video camera into a video webcam. Every video camera comes with RCA cables, because they are used to connect to so many things your VCR, Television, and even your computer. If your camera does not come with RCA cables then you want to look around to see if you can buy one that is compatible to your video camera.  The manufacture website usually has them, or look on eBay for it.  If you’re wondering what the RCA cables are they are the cables that are red, yellow and white. Connecting with a  S-Video cable is another easy way to connect your video camera to your computer. If your computer comes with an S-video port and your camera has an S-video cable you can connect your camera. I personally haven’t tried this myself I usually go with connecting with RCA cables. Your camera might not come with the S-video cable but they usually have them for sale on the manufacture website.  Picture on the right

There is many ways to connect using the RCA cables one of them being directly into the back of your desktop computer usually if they have the video capture card built in, or you can buy one and install it yourself. Osprey makes capture cards which are easy to find anywhere you might find others around. You plug in your RCA yellow cable into the capture card and it will recognize your video camera is plugged in. Another method if your not able to get a capture card installed or if your using a laptop you can buy an external one they are called usb video capture devices; Dazzle, Roxio and Diamond Multimedia make one. The video capture cards that go into your computer are also called tv-turners, but since they have made so many external video capture cards it might be easier to get an external one then an internal one.

• Microsft lifecam cineman is maninly compatible with windows, the minute I plugged in the cam it connected to the windows update website and downloaded the drivers you might not need the CD if you have a windows XP or higher.  Which is a definite sign it most likely will not work with Mac.
• The cam was able to connect quickly to the software but I found that is runs a lot of power it also started to give me an error message to change settings to have a lower picture view.  When I was testing it out on www.testmycam.com
• The microsoft cam only allows you to use the microsoft microphone which I found to be a very poor quality the volume didn’t come in using it’s microphone. Plus I wasn’t able to use the microsoft cam in Windows Movie Maker.

I didn’t get to really use the microsoft lifecam cinema as I hoped becasue it did get on my nerves very quickly. If there is a camgirl out there using this webcam for shows and would like to add to this review I would like to hear from you.

Single parenting may be one of the hardest things anyone can take on. It is a task best-managed by two people .  But that is not always possible.  The extended family and good friends can provide endless help.  But, tThere are so many single parents who are just trying to keep bread on the table for their kids.  How can a single working parent home school their children?

Today, I am going to limit myself to situations where the child is old enough or mature enough to stay alone. I am one of those who still believe the world is basically a safe place without monsters behind every tree. I could be proven wrong today, but I am going to pray that my beliefs will be proven true. I also believe it is good for a child to be allowed to take on more responsibility early in their lives.

Home schooling families are generally ones who have many friends. They are actually the families involved in many things outside of the home. Many have trusted neighbors close who may home school. They may also have elders close who might not mind looking in on the kids or at least making a phone call. The most important part of all this is that the child feel safe and is safe when left alone. They should feel that there are other adults to whom they can turn. So if you have trusted neighbors you might try asking them to either check in on the kids or make phone calls at some regular time. They don’t have to live really close to make a phone call. Often all that would be needed would be a simple call to be sure things are ok and on track. A family member might also be willing to do this at a certain time each day. There are also home school consultants who will call to check on your children. They will do this for a fee. What they do is call the child to make sure everything is ok, then call, text or email the parents to let them know how the child is handling the day. Often work places will not allow parents to make such calls.  Because of this, more services are becoming available to parents along with bonded tutors who can be trusted to work with your child when you are not around. All that can take place right in the home.

Please remember that we are really talking about here is the trust you have in your child as well as the safety of the surroundings. But having said that there are other ways parents can keep up with their kids. Cell phones are now nearly ubiquitous. Many of the devices have GPS systems installed in them. This allows the parent to track where their kid is if they have the phone on them. When you discuss these things with your child you may want to assure them that the point is not to keep up with the child but to assure yourself that the child is safe and sound. Having the child phone or text you at certain times of the day to verify what they are doing and where they are will also give you much piece of mind. One easy thing to do is to have the child take a picture of themselves in the house or where they are supposed to be at particular times during the day with their phone. They can then send these pictures to you by mms or by email to let you know where they are. They can bear a time and date stamp. The same thing can be easily done with the web cam and a chat program where you can establish and internet link to talk to the child and see what they are doing. There are a number of services that will do this for you.

Some parents install internet ready cameras in their homes so they can keep up with what is happening over the internet.  This is becoming very common among people who take care of the elderly.  Many care givers who do not want to place an elder person into a permanent care situation will simply install small web cams around the house so they are able to check on their elders.  Many of these systems can be installed so that you can actually talk to your child over the cam system.  It is entirely possibly now to keep up with what is going on in the house from anywhere you have an internet connection.

Many parents choose to involve themselves in a Co-op where children can be left during the day for a fee. The child will do their home schooling assignments, be in the company of other children and adults until you are free to pick up the child again. Many churches are now beginning to figure this out as a way to make extra income or become involved in a home school ministry by providing a place where kids can be while their parent is away.  Check with local home school associations or other home schoolers to track these services down.

If you don’t have a formal co-op perhaps it would be possible to get several trusted families together to provide needed supervision during times you cannot be at home.

Other solutions would be an alarm system that includes a panic feature. But with a reliance on family, friends, and other home school families you will most likely be able to manage well.

There are also excellent churches that sponsor classes for home schooled kids and supervised study halls. Perhaps the best place to start a search for these organizations would be a local home school association or home school stores in your area. A number of stores also have classes and supervised activities.

However, all of that may be unneeded if you feel your child is responsible or if you can check in with your child during the day or the time you are gone. All that leaves you with is the need to organize assignments. When I was a child I loved to organize myself. I even made a schedule out for myself from about the fifth grade. Yes, I was a strange child. That being said every child has a particular need for organization. Some need more while others need less organization.

I like systems that provide everything in one place that a student will need to work on a particular assignment while the parent is away. Some parents use shoe boxes, other use file boxes. One of the best systems is Sue Patrick’s Work Box System. Sue has created an organization system that is bar none as good as anything I have seen. You can find Sue’s materials here

You, of course, know your child better than anyone. You know how much independence your child can accept. I was by myself a tremendous amount when my mother worked after my father passed away. I was fine at those times because I had organized things to do. Remember there is always a solution to every problem.
