RSS is oftenly translated as “Really Simple Syndication” is a web family of feeds (links) format used to publish updated content such as blogs entries, news headlines, videos, etc. A RSS document includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. The advantage of RSS is that it allows you to stay informed regularly by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. RSS readers/users need to subscribe to keep getting updated news and articles about an specific subject.
You can add a RSS feed in your wordpress blog. The way I put a RSS feed on my blog was by first looking for a topic of my interest in the education week website. Once I found it, I clicked on the orange RSS image. Then I copied the URL and on my dashsboard under appearance I added a RSS widget. As I did so I had the option to choose whether I wanted the RSS feed to display a brief description of the article, author and date. Again these are choices and is up to you if you want to show all of that information.

Podcasting?
Podcasitng is web syndicating a podcast.

Podcast?
A podcast is an organized series of digital media files made available for download via web syndication.

Web syndication?
It is simply a way of publishing the series in the web. Content distributor syndicate the descriptor of the series, called web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it.
The syndication aspect of the delivery is what differentiates podcasts from other methods of content delivery, such as direct download or streaming. Dedicated software applications, known as podcatchers, aggregators, feed readers, or news readers, automatically identify new files associated with the podcast as soon as they are made available, store the files locally on the user’s computer or other device for offline use, and notify the user about the appearance.

Series? Web feed?
One could call it ‘collection’, but term ‘series’ catches aspect of a growth of the collection in time. To form a series, all the content has to be somehow enclosed, enlisted, described. In web syndication terminology, the descriptor of the series is called ‘web feed’, ‘news feed’, or ‘syndicated feed’.
The descriptor, i.e. the web feed, is a single file containing a sequence of references, i.e. web links, to digital media files constituting the contents, called entries, episodes, etc.
Usually, the feed and the media content are stored on separate web servers. Publishing new podcast episode involves uploading new content and updating of the feed (appending to it a reference to the new content).
Obviously, a format of the descriptor is standarized.

Standarized?
To be standarized means to have a common form. There are a few standards for the web feeds. Dominant ones are Atom and RSS. Supposedly, the most popular is RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication. Here is an example of an RSS file:

Please note item elements, and link elements.
Obviously, there are specialized applications for maintaining web feeds files, so podcasting is very easy.

Podcatchers?
In the typical scenario of using web feeds, a content provider publish a link to a web feed on a web site which end user can register with a podcatcher application running on his own machines; doing this is usually a dragging the link from the web browser to the podcatcher, or entering the link manually. All the links are stored by the podcatcher in its registry. When instructed (which usually is scheduled), the podcatcher retrieves current versions of all the web feeds files. Identification of new files in podcasts is done by comparison of newly retrieved versions of the web feeds files with older, previously retrieved ones. If presence of any new contents is detected, a note of the new content is made and/or the content is downloaded. Sometimes, the content is delivered to the user via telephone connection or VoIP – in these cases a phone call has to be made to access the content.

The dominant podcatching client is Apple’s iTunes player. Alternatives are Microsoft’s Zune Marketplace, Juice (multiplatform), Doppler (Windows), Podget (Linux), and Podracer (Linux). Some established audio players, such as AmaroK, Winamp and Mediamonkey also offer (sometimes limited) podcatching functionality.
Serving all from an intranet?
A web server for the feed and for the contents is needer. All can be served from same machine. All is served via HTTP, like regular web pages.

Podcatcher on N95?
Delivered with the phone.

Podcatcher on blackberries?
Not delivered with the phone. Podtrapper from http://versatilemonkey.com ($9.99) will suit. Free one from http://www.ultrapodcastplayer.com has to be tested.

The online world is changing at blazing-fast speeds. Every day untold numbers of blog posts are publ

The online world is changing at blazing-fast speeds. Every day untold numbers of blog posts are published, Web sites are launched, and files are uploaded and shared. The Internet is unquestionably saturated by content ranging from images of cute ninja kitties to genealogy databases to social networking sites for skeeball players. However, despite the fun places to visit online, and the great source of information it provides, much of what is on the Internet is just noise. In fact, it is now so loud and big that no one knows exactly how big it is.

With all that Internet noise, how will you know when the Web sites that you love to visit have updates? One option is to bookmark (or save) your favorites in your browser, so you’ll have the links readily available for when you want to go back again. The problem with this idea is that have to keep going to the Web sites to see if anything has changed. You will also have to remember what it looked like the last time you visited, so you will noticed what’s different.

But what if you were able to go to one place on the Internet to see if this week’s image of adorable ninja fuzziness had been uploaded? (Of course kitty is featured executing a mid-air roundhouse and sporting a terrycloth headband.) And what if, while you were in this one place where you could see that the ninja kitties Web site had uploaded a new image, you also saw that your sister updated the family history database, and that the local skeeball club won the regional championships last weekend.

Not only is that a better idea than managing links in bookmarks, it’s entirely do-able and totally free.

One of the easiest, time-saving online tools available today now makes it possible to know immediately when new content is uploaded to the Internet. All that is required is two things:

A Web feed reader. Readers act like electronic newspapers that double as your own personal Web site. Examples of feed readers are Google Reader, Bloglines, and FeedDemon. They keep track of all the latest content from the Web sites you subscribe to and manage the feeds you’re subscribed to.

Web feeds to subscribe to. Web feeds are just files on the Internet that update whenever a Web site it tracks updates. They are usually called RSS feeds (Really Simple Syndication) but actually can be many other file formats, such as Atom or XML.

No technical knowledge is required to take advantage of Web feeds and feed reader tools. However, in order to subscribe to a Web site’s content, the site must be feed-enabled.

To see if a site is enabled and has an RSS feed to subscribe to, look for a square feed graphic that you can click on (usually next to the words “subscribe” or “RSS feed” or “share this” or the like). It should be somewhere on the Web page, but if all else fails be sure to look at the right end of address bar. (The address bar where you’d type the Web site address you want to visit.)

I’ll talk more about Web feeds in the next Social Media in Real Life class on March 21st. For example, how to search for like-minded folks and information using feeds and what things to do to promote your feed. I hope to see you there learning about feeds and other online tools and how they apply in real life.

By the way, the (usually) orange feed graphic shown here is called a chicklet even though they’re not teeny white squares of gum or an indie rock band from Toronto or baby chickens. Weird, huh?

Regardless of what subscription feeds are called, or the technology that makes them work, I find that RSS feeds have been very valuable in helping me not missing anything important on the Internet.

Although personally, I’ve tired of the ninja kittie fad. Can we please move on to kittie solid gold dancers?

“A web feed (or news feed) is a data format used for providing users with frequently updated content. Content distributors syndicate a web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it. Making a collection of web feeds accessible in one spot is known as aggregation, which is performed by an Internet aggregator. A web feed is also sometimes referred to as a syndicated feed.

In the typical scenario of using web feeds, a content provider publishes a feed link on their site which end users can register with an aggregator program (also called a feed reader or a news reader) running on their own machines; doing this is usually as simple as dragging the link from the web browser to the aggregator. When instructed, the aggregator asks all the servers in its feed list if they have new content; if so, the aggregator either makes a note of the new content or downloads it. Aggregators can be scheduled to check for new content periodically. Web feeds are an example of pull technology, although they may appear to push content to the user.

The kinds of content delivered by a web feed are typically HTML (webpage content) or links to webpages and other kinds of digital media. Often when websites provide web feeds to notify users of content updates, they only include summaries in the web feed rather than the full content itself.

Web feeds are operated by many news websites, weblogs, schools, and podcasters.”

Thanks to Wikipedia for the above detailed definition.

With regards to real estate, “feeds” are generally csv files of MLS information which is “fed” to other sites; such as, Broker and agent websites, Trulia, Realtor.com, Zillow, etc.

Important items to know with regard to feeds:

1. Some feeds are picked up and refreshed every hour, others once per day, others may only be once per week.

2. If your MLS data is missing, the feed may not take your listing. If you MLS data is incorrect, your feed data will be incirrect.

3. If you reduce the price of a property, it may take up to 2 weeks for the information to be updated on the various sites, depending on when they refresh their feed.

4. Feeds are not going away. Embrace them and accept them. Thanks to feeds, our listings are exposed to millions of consumers each and every day.

RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works such as blog entries, news headlines and so on, in a standardized format. An RSS document includes a brief summary of the original text, and also metadata such as publishing dates and authorship.

RSS Logo

And, you all might be thinking of who benefits from the use of this type of formats. Let’s see. Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically; they, too, benefit readers who want to subscribe to websites that are regularly updated.

RSS formats are specified using XML, a markup language specialized, among other functions, in the creation of data formats. RSS formats have evolved in the last years, and that is the reason why we can find different versions:

Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91)

RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and 1.0)

Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)

The term RSS has caused confusion recently because it has been extensively applied to Web feeds in general, although another Web feeds formats such as Atom, for instance, are widely used nowadays.

RSS feeds are read using a specific software called a “feed reader”, or “aggregator“. These aggregators allow us to obtain in our desktop or e-mail accounts the summaries that we have previously mentioned above, instead of visiting hundreds and hundreds of webs to check if they have been updated.

Mozilla Snowl is a new experimental Firefox addon that acts as a more advanced feed reader. It can display RSS feeds and also Twitter messages. I’ve never gotten into microblogging, but it’s an interesting concept. Here’s how Snowl works as an RSS/ATOM aggregator.

Snowl has three modes; List, Stream and River.

River modes shows a list of messages in a page view. It shows the title and a small snippet of text, and the author.

List mode shows messages like an email client. It allows the a news article to be displayed in full by double clicking the message. There doesn’t seem, however, to be any way to open up links in a tab.

Stream mode displays a sidebar with the latest messages at the top, with nice icons.

Snowl has a lot of nice concepts, but it seems to be more intended to be used with Twitter than web feeds. The small amount of text in river mode, the small size of the frame for viewing articles in list mode and the ability to select people, rather than just feeds, all point to this. It would be good if Snowl was more customisable to better suit needs one way or another.

1. It would be good to be able to select how much text is displayed in river mode.

2. It would be even better to have a feature to expand the text, like in the old Isohunt.

3. It would also be good to be able to customise the number of messages that are kept. I’m not really interested in anything in a feed if I don’t read it after a day.It would be good to limit the time of messages, as well as the number that display in stream mode.

4. It would look nice if icons are displayed in river mode.

5. It would be good to be able to use something like greasemonkey to alter the way in which Google news appears.

6. It would be good if river mode could support the formatting in Google news, rather than just displaying it as text, which repeats the title.

Otherwise, Snowl is looking good.

It’s a common problem for anyone who joined Facebook some time ago. You look at your friend list and wonder who these people are.

Burger King wants to help consumers do something about it.

The fast-food chain has released the Whopper Sacrifice application on Facebook. The app rewards people with a coupon for BK’s signature burger when they cull 10 friends. Each time a friend is excommunicated, the application sends a notification to the banished party via Facebook’s news feed explaining that the user’s love for the unlucky soul is less than his or her zeal for the Whopper.

The effort crafted by Crispin Porter + Bogusky came about after agency creative staffers confronted the too-many-friends scenario themselves on Facebook.

“We thought there could be some fun there, removing some of these people who are friends [but] not necessarily] best friends,” said Jeff Benjamin, executive interactive creative director at Crispin, and friend to 736 on Facebook. “It’s asking the question of which love is bigger, your love for your friends or your love for the Whopper,” he said.

Monday, November 10, 2008 by Chrix Finne

The Reader team is happy to announce that another 20% project has come to fruition: automatic translation in Reader! Post by 20% volunteer and glottology expert, Brett Bavar.

Believe it or not, the web truly is world-wide. That means there is a lot of interesting content out there in languages other than your own. You might have missed out on this content in the past, but now, with automatic translation in Reader, you don’t have to miss a thing!

Next time you find an interesting feed in another language, just subscribe to it as normal in Reader. When you view the feed in Reader, check off “Translate into my language” in the feed settings, and (voila!) the feed will be immediately translated for you. Also, this setting will be saved so you can always view this feed in your own language.

Many thanks go out to the awesome engineers on the Google Translate team, who have provided the technology to make this possible. As they continue to make their translation systems better, you will get to reap the benefits automatically.

Have fun discovering all the great content out there on the truly world-wide web!

So you may have noticed a few changes around here……..The blog has been moved over to wordpress. There is a number of reasons for the move. After a year on blogspot, which has served me and this blog very well with some 11,000 individual hits since October of last year, the site needed some updating. I had toyed with the idea of moving it last February but resisted the urge and put it off until the lead weight was out of the way! Hopefully for those of you on the RSS feed this will be a seamless transition. (As the feed comes via Feedburner it was just a case of changing the feed address on my side.) I will be redirecting the domain name later this afternoon so that it points to the new hosting address http://theangryhedgehog.wordpress.com. So onwards and upwards and I hope to see y’all, in an springcleaned & updated blog from here on in!

Rgds,

John.

Torex has put rss.com up for sale with a $750,000 USD reserve. Sedo, the online market place for buying and selling web names will oversee its sale to its new buyer.

Jason Richards, global vice president, information services, Torex, commented: “Following our review of our digital assets, we’ve concluded that the domain name RSS, while having significant value in the marketplace, is not totally indicative of the Torex product, support and service offerings on a go-forward basis. Rather than maintaining this asset, we feel that it is better suited for a company in the media, publishing or entertainment sector where it should have stronger market appeal. Sedo is the ideal partner for us to announce its availability and oversee its sale.”

RSS logo

If you are one of the millions of users on the Internet, you would most likely come across a tiny (usually orange colored box) with the letters RSS written within the box. You may also see this orange square with white markings of a dot and two sloped lines of different lengths (indicating radio waves). The acronym RSS means Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. What does RSS mean to you?

RSS is a data system that delivers information to you upon your request. This delivery system provides you with information that constantly changes, keeping you up-to-date with current events of your choice. According to Wikipedia, “[a]n RSS document (which is called a “feed“, “web feed“, or “channel“) includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship”. For example, blog postings, or news information-in audio or video format can be updated frequently in an RSS format. RSS comes to you in the form of what is referred to as an aggregator.

This aggregator contains all updates accessible in one location. RSS is like web surfing-only it is done automatically by your computer. All the information via RSS is provided to you as events occur-updated and ready for viewing or listening. “RSS feeds uses software called an “RSS reader“, “feed reader“, or “aggregator“, which can be web-based or desktop-based” (Wikipedia).

The data format used to provide you with this frequent update of information is referred to as a news feed or web feed. Distributors syndicate a web feed, and by so doing, you can subscribe to the RSS.

A reader-you-with interest in my blog can subscribe and receive all new information on my pages, posts, and comments as they become available.

I used bloglines.com for my reader and found it to be very helpful. For class, I subscribed to Beth Rarey, Katlin Humrickhouse, Antoine Wilhite, Maggie Firestone, and Krista Wachtman’s blogs.

I think that RSS Reader technology can benefit teaching and learning because it is an easy way to access up-to-date information quickly. For instance, if students are finding current events, you can subscribe to different news sources using an RSS Reader and then be informed yourself about the news. You could also use an RSS Reader to do research. Being knowledgeable of various types of information by using a RSS Reader will not only help you to teach better, but it will also help you to learn more about the world.

An RSS feed is a type of web feed. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. In a way it’s like the Associated Press. One person writes an article, let’s call him the blogger. The bloggers article is then sent to the Associated Press for syndication, or in this case to an RSS feed. The newspapers that are interested in the story re-print the original article. Think of other bloggers as the newpapers and the RSS system as the Associated Press. You submit an article via RSS to a busy blogger or reader who has subscribed so they can read what you have to say. Now if they like what they read, maybe they will link/repost your article on their website, possibly save it to del.icio.us or pingback/trackback to their blog. Maybe the subscriber will buy something from you if your posts are about something you are selling. The latest this or the latest that. By subscribing to your feed they are demonstrating a willingness to hear what you have to say. So don’t waste RSS subscribers time with fluff since they are a great potential client.

Using RSS feeds is really simple with the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1 will show the RSS button at the end of the address bar. It looks like an orange square with three parentheses pointing up and to the right. Single left-click on that orange button to bring up the subscription window. I choose Google from the drop-down list and the selected feed is automatically added in a section of my iGoogle home page.

I use iGoogle to view my feeds, I only track a few. Google also offers the Google Reader application that provides even more functionality for tracking many RSS feeds.

RSS feeds can be used by businesses for many things. A pastor may podcast his sermons and by using RSS feeds so he can distribute the podcasts automatically to his parishioners instead of using more traditional methods such as e-mail or a phone call.

A website designer might use RSS feeds to let people know about his latest design accomplishments. A non-profit organization might use an RSS feed so the people donating money can easily see where the money is going or be notified of upcoming events, without spending money on e-mail campaigns. Anything newsworthy or unique is a prime candidate for RSS technology.

A share holder might even use an RSS feed to monitor the blog of the companies he has a stake in. A sports fan might want the latest information about a certain team or just scores and highlights. RSS feeds provide customized content delivery to your desktop. You don’t have to search manually, you can setup an RSS feed on a search term as well. If you want to make sure noone is using your business name or imposing on your brand, setup an RSS feed to monitor yourself based on selected search terms.

The easiest way to start an RSS feed is to start a blog. Fantastico can be used to add a WordPress blog to a website. Check the control panel on your hosting providers website to see if the Fantastico option is available.

Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox for receiving RSS feeds? Mozilla Firefox is far easier to setup and use for inbound RSS feeds.

WordPress or Blogger? We techie guys went with WordPress. WordPress gives me results from Google quickly. It generally takes less than an hour before I start getting search hits from Google each time I post an article.

Frequent updates to your blog help a lot to keep the Google search hits coming. It doesn’t always have to be an essay.

We talked some more about MyBlogLog and began to look online at MyBlogLog communities to join related to what our own blogs are about. MyBlogLog is a great way to find other people with similar interests and related blogs.

del.icio.us is a great way to organize your favorites and bookmarks so you can share them with other people. You can add your del.icio.us account links to your blogs and social networking sites by using widgets. The tags are used to help del.icio.us users to find the information they are seeking. Tags are slightly different than keywords in that there are times when people are browsing del.icio.us and not searching. The tags help guide del.icio.us users to the sites and other users that share similar interests. Keywords are used more for search engine searches. Tags are set manually. Keywords are found.

A signature file is a powerful e-mail based tool to get more visitors and business. Your custom signature file can be set to automatically insert each time you send an e-mail. You can use your signature file to reach people you already know with links to your blog or LinkedIn. Add HTML code snippets to your signature file to make it real fancy. The LinkedIn Outlook Toolbar for Microsoft Outlook has a real nice signature generator if you need help creating one.

dmoz.org is a pain in the butt. It’s that simple but don’t give up.

We covered a lot today. It was a great meeting. Thank you to all that attended.
