Già qualche settimana addietro scrissi a riguardo.

Do you have a content strategy for your own social media presence? If you’re a professional, you probably should. Too many small business/startup blogs and Twitter feeds are too inwardly focused, all about features and updates or the founder’s views and activities.

I give some tips for getting a plan and making your content valuable in my Web Worker Daily article Taking Content Strategy Personally.

I admit I’m compulsive and neurotic about some things. Like recycling. I recycle everything, even the little paper envelopes my teabags come in. (And then agonize about what tea plantations have done to developing countries, the carbon emissions to ship the tea, the fact that so many resources go into creating something that is essentially a non-food. Although it does have anti-oxidants. Then I vow to quit. Almost every day.). You see what I mean by neurotic?

Everybody seems to have at least two cents to contribute to the apparently endless discussion of online identity (or personal branding, or e-reputation, or whatever you want to call it). I have plenty to say about it too; I even give talks on the topic. And since personal branding was the theme on Web Worker Daily last month, I contributed two articles that you might find interesting. Or not.
Everybody who knows me knows I’m a champion of French startups: on my own blogs, on Web Worker

Everybody who knows me knows I’m a champion of French startups: on my own blogs, on Web Worker Daily, and IRL. But I’m on the verge of being really pissed off. There’s a French startup that owes me around 300 Euros for a translation I did, and they’re six months late paying…

The merde is about to hit the ventilateur.

Back in February, the founder of said startup contacted the translation co-op I work with as a translator and project manager. He needed an executive summary translated from French into English in a hurry.

It was immediately clear that this startup was having the translation done for a competition that I had also entered one of my projects in. Because the startup was not in the same space as mine, and because my application was already in, I had no ethical problem taking the translation job myself. If that hadn’t been the case, I would have had someone else do it. Because I’m an ethical person.

The founder signed and returned the purchase order, and I got started. Not only that, I decided to do it on a weekend, out of solidarity for a fellow startupper, cuz that’s the way I am. I put my heart into it. I’d walked miles in their shoes.

I sent the translated document, and the founder went to the trouble of telling me to congratulate the translator for the excellent work (I had worn only my project manager hat in communicating with him — he didn’t know I’d also translated his doc.).

A couple of days later, I learned that his startup had been selected and mine hadn’t. (All the startups that were selected were much further along than the project I entered.) I was happy for those guys and glad to have been able to help.

So a couple months go by. And a couple more. And we haven’t been paid yet. End of June, when the bill is 115 days late, I send the founder a casual e-mail saying something to the effect of “We may be mistaken but it doesn’t appear that we’ve been paid, would you mind checking on your end?” No reponse.

A month later, end of July, I send another one, more firm, saying that I was not only the PM but also the translator, reminding him he’d been very happy with my work, and that it was time to pay for it. I cc’d the co-founder on this one. No response.

Now, what I know from having translated their executive summary is that they are making money. They’re 40-somethings with executive backgrounds and powerful connections in the multi-billion-dollar industry in which they’ve launched their startup. If they were a couple of kids in a garage eating ramen, I’d be willing to let it go. Because that’s the way I am.

And there you have it.

I will send another e-mail at the end of August. I’ll remind them that French law requires that they pay their debts within 45 days or they’ll be subject to a fine and sanctions under Article L. 442-6-III of the Commerce Code…

If they don’t pay then, I’ll blacklist them on all the major websites for freelance translators. But do I go further? Do I write on the wall of their Facebook fan page that I’m still waiting to be paid for that translation I did six months ago? Do I do the same on the founders’ personal blogs? Do I stalk them on Twitter? Do I tell the startup competition judges they’re dishonest losers? After all, investors don’t like to invest in companies that are unethical and can’t manage their finances…

It’s all so tempting. We’ll see…

…I’ve spent a few years with my finger on the racing pulse of the Web and I’ll tell you what. There’s a whole lot of crap out there. There are so many utterly ridiculous concepts that have managed to find programmers and investors, so many brain-wasters helping to speed along the decline and fall of Western civilization… We could be doing so much better. It can get depressing sometimes. But the reality is just this, and it will never change:

This week I’m launching an e-commerce site to accompany Francophilia, the social network for francophiles I founded. It’s running on the Zlio platform. It has some limitations, but I’m pretty happy to be able to offer my francophile members one-stop shopping for French and French-themed products!

Just found out my personal blog, frogblog, is ranked 42 of all blogs in the “France” category according to invesp consulting. And I’m in some pretty good company! But you know what they say about stats.

Got my blogging pass for LeWeb ‘09. I’ll be there for Web Worker Daily again this year. I discovered some exciting startups to write about there in ‘08.

I have a new dog. Well, actually, he’s a “used” dog. I even wrote about one of the reasons why someone with my lifestyle should get a dog on Web Worker Daily the other day. It was published on the day I got him from the shelter! His name is Wiley. But we also call him Firefox because he looks like a fox. And, of course, we are Firefox fans.

I got an iPhone! Like Wiley, it’s used — Vincent gave me his 2G when he got a 3GS. I spent Saturday morning playing with it in bed…

Every startup founder dreams of changing the world and/or striking it rich. And everything Internet-related seems to happen so fast that you can be easily fooled into believing that your startup has to be an overnight sensation in order to be considered worthwhile. It does work that way for some people. But most of us have to work really hard for a long time, during which we suffer deeply from user envy. I mean, Facebook gets over half a million new users a day! Nothing like somebody else’s huge stats to make you feel horribly inadequate…

We all have days when we get demoralized and depressed and consider giving it all up for a day job.

If you’re suffering from the startup blues, here’s some good medicine for you that’ll put an end to your user envy…

Read Patience and Hard Work from the Contrast blog. “If your number of users is growing 10% each month, you’re doubling your user base every 7 months. So if you’ve only got 70 users, you just need 10 more this month, allowing for churn.”

Watch this inspiring video of David Heinemeier Hansson (37Signals) at Startup School ‘08.

David talks, among other things, about the beauty of realistic expectations. He tells you exactly how to make a million dollars in a year (2,000 customers who pay $40 a month). That seems realistic, doesn’t it? Thirty-two very informative, entertaining and refreshing minutes.

Now that you feel better, get back to work!

Google is messing with my reality and that is simply unacceptable. A while back I noticed that, more

Google is messing with my reality and that is simply unacceptable. A while back I noticed that, more and more often, my searches were returning a lot of junk that was unrelated to what I was looking for. I have concluded that Google thinks I’m an infant. Or a moron.

I google some weird stuff because I’m a translator. I’ll spare you the explanation. The other day, I googled the words narrow area reality and Google, in its infinite wisdom, didn’t bother to ask me Did you mean realty, it just gave me a bunch of crap having to do with real estate. The first instance of the three terms I had typed didn’t appear till three results down the page.

Google consistently pollutes my search results and abuses my mental bandwidth because it thinks it’s smarter than I am, and I resent it in a major way.

The Did you mean… option is essential. Just making the decision for you without providing that option sucks. And I can’t figure out why sometimes Google asks the question and sometimes it doesn’t. Do you know?

Not long ago, Google even refused to return results for a word it didn’t like, an obscure French word I was trying to find a picture of for a translation I was working on. Google just corrected my spelling to some English word that came somewhat close because obviously I was too stupid to know what I was typing.

I had to go into my preferences and change the search to the French web. Because Google constantly and randomly resets my preferences. I use Google Images a lot when I translate, sometimes as a dictionary supplement, sometimes as a replacement. And I also need equal access to French and English web content. Duh.

I’ve never paid much attention when I see an article go by in my RSS feed about Google’s latest algorithm “improvement.” But I think I’m going to have to start. And I’m thinking of switching search engines too. Any suggestions?

Excitement
Today a link to the gorgeous Goddess Leonie’s site is in order. I am very pleased to have a sponsorship button on Goddess Leonie’s beautiful site, which is called Goddess Guide Book. She had already put the link there when I woke up (after having sent the artwork/payment at 1 (one) am!). She is one fabulous and organised goddess!

Reality check
Today I played the part of “parent” at parent-teacher interviews. I think of myself as firm but fair, but have been told by one of the kids’ teachers (years ago) that I am in fact “…one degree to the right of marshmallow”. Self image needs adjusting!

And more excitement
Oh. My. God. It has been on the mental ToDo list for some time, putting my blog at my own domain name. I did it. Just now. Finalised. Next I will make it nice, with pretty curtains and cups of chai and then I will invite you all over!

Thank you so much for reading, and Take Care Fabulous Mortals,

Even though I was just at a barcamp a few weeks ago, I couldn’t pass up the chance to attend TDWCamp yesterday, a barcamp for web workers organized by Olivier Chambon, author of the blog Travailleurs du Web. I wanted to mingle with some of Web Worker Daily’s audience, and to hear from them firsthand about their interests, needs and concerns. And besides, it’s always gratifying to meet and exchange with people who understand your way of life… We web people are still on the fringe. For the time being.

GTD was a hot topic. One of the participants pointed out how very anglo-saxon the whole concept is, and a few of us had a brief discussion about why French web workers might have a hard time implementing GTD practices. You see, Americans are culturally conditioned to categorize things with ease and to act quickly and efficiently (with minimal reflection). That can be a good thing or a very bad thing, but that’s what GTD is all about. The French, on the other hand, are heavily into reflection.

Pascal Baudry captures the essence of the cultural phenomenon that allows us Americans to get things done in his book French and Americans: The Other Shore (available in French and English):

American culture is a binary one. Within its context, a statement must be either true or false. Americans are quite uncomfortable with nuances of gray, whereas the French thrive and even delight in the oceans of ambiguity that they purposely preserve. In fact, Americans are mentally wired in such a way that, when placed in a situation of uncertainty, they will create a new sub-category within which a statement will be either true or false. If that result has still not been achieved, a new sub-sub-category will be created, and so on, until the final taxonomy is a completely binary one.

So, when the GTD group seemed to be seeking concrete answers and specific instructions for implementing GTD, I told them it was mostly a question of mentality, knowing full well that this would be their biggest challenge. But this web generation is mentally flexible, and the web is the ultimate melting pot, so maybe it won’t be so hard for them after all.

Barcamps are awesome. Watch the first four hours of TDWCamp (compressed into 2 minutes) and read about how and why to organize your own barcamp in my article on Web Worker Daily (also on Salon.com).

Dear bold and fabulous ones,

Meg Fowler had a list of things she loves on her blog post today. I thought “What a good and happy idea” and that I would join in with a love list, too. Hello other Meg! Other Meg is from Meg Fowler dot com, so if you didn’t just come from there go check our her list. I’ll wait here.

Things I (Tangerine Meg) love (in no particular order):

My family and dear friends. Supportive and inspiring! Last year one friend got me this fantastic wool happy hat, and this year I found a scarf to match. And recently one has given me a handed down rainwater tank – wow, handy! Names have been changed omitted to protect the innocent.

Circus Training including doing handstands and trapeze. This is a fledgling set of skills I am appreciating slowly acquiring for the first time as an adult.

This beautiful rain. The ground has been so thirsty. We humans are lucky and the ducks are happy again. It’s tough with not much water.

My garden. Growing, feeding me, being beautiful outside my windows. (There is a bit of grass growing between the lettuce and nasturtiums now that there is enough water being applied. The bottom photo is the herb tubs outside my kitchen window.)

Listening to Prem Rawat speak centres me like nothing else I know.

The local farmers market. Bringing locally grown produce together to offer us without using a lot of our planets energy to transport it from far away. I am happy to support them to feed my household and proud to wear my membership (discount!) card.

My gorgeous HeartFelt slippers. (If the website still says they are sold out, I suggest you email or phone as it apparently needs updating). They are made from Aussie felted wool. I adore them, they are fun and bright and warm, and they jingle gently when I walk. My previous disintegrating slippers have been finally retired. Shown here with my new woollen rainbow socks!

The first soup of the cold season. I made it today and ate with left over butter chicken. It is warming spicy pumpkin and borlotti bean.

The Monarto Zoo. Went to the “local” open range zoo last week. It was really great to see heaps of live animals relatively close up. Here is a shot of the back of me, looking out at a lioness. The lionesses were all edgy because it was a really windy day, and they approached the bus and we had to back up. Will do a seperate post with heaps more animal pics.

Me on the bus and the lioness outside the window

Many of the things I have chosen today seem to have a theme of keeping warm! I guess it shows the seasons are turning. I’m sure you noticed the rainbow/colourful thread too. That’s me being me. Hooray!

So enjoy your time on the internet, and make sure you keep time for other things too (just like I need to!) Got some planting to do now the soil is freshly rained upon.

Thanks for reading.
Take care,
(Tangerine) Meg

It is time for Google to keep improving its features. In such a way, Google Docs has removed its limitations. Therefore, earlier only first 100 pages of the uploaded PDF files will be displayed, but now you can upload the longer documents as long as the size is lesser than 10MB. Another major change in this is, you can upload more than 100 PDFs, but we don’t know about new upper bound.

Click to sort tables in Google Docs easily

The viewer is used when you upload PDF files in Google Docs or when you click on a PDF attachment in Gmail. It works by converting the pages to PNG images and it has advanced features like zoom, search and text selection.

Oh lucky me! I discovered Ykone, a sizzlin’ French startup last night when I saw their presentation at the Keiretsu Paris investors’ meeting. It’s a social network built around fashion brands that has really taken off in the couple of months since they launched. Delicious site (visually and in terms of interactivity), impeccable concept, an encyclopedia—literally—of content for the fashionistas. This is one to watch.

Charming founders Olivier Billon and Mathieu Lebreton gave the presentation and had the investors at their feet. Olivier, with his degree from Sciences Po, and Mathieu, who, at only 23, authors the top fashion blog Matérialiste, probably wouldn’t appreciate being called adorable, but they were. When you are selling a high-fashion startup, it doesn’t hurt to be a living doll.

And you know I’m going to offer to translate their site into English ! Because, yes, they’re planning to do just that. Watch out Vogue…

Mi soffermo di tanto in tanto sulle parole che queste persone accompagnano al proprio nickname ma soprattutto, ciò che più mi incuriosisce è l’esigenza che fa scaturire la “pubblicazione” di determinati contenuti;

Il tempo speso ad aggiornare il proprio profilo in tutte le sue sfaccettature, compilare stupidi quiz e caricare foto riempie dunque una considerevole quantità della propria giornata;

Vediamo cosa abbiamo oggi:

Il duro:

[Oggi, Pale + Thai!] Perdonare non è nel mio credo.

Colui che ha usato lo Sforzo:

…whoah!!…

Lo spensierato:

Hakuna Matata

|| “Madò, quanto so’ fiscali!”

L’incazzata, per l’appunto:

è incazzata nera!!!!!

Il viaggiatore:

diretto ad Andromeda

La palla:

Let’s Roll
