5 χρόνια πέρασαν από την ανακοίνωση της πρώτης release του WordPress, δημοφιλούς php script για την δημιουργία online blogs. Χθες με την ευκαιρία των γενεθλίων του, διοργανώθηκε ένα party στο San Francisco. Περίμενα κάτι παραπάνω όσον αφορά τις εκδηλώσεις…και κάτι πιο εορταστικό στην επίσημη σελίδα. Σε κάθε περίπτωση, μέσα σε αυτά τα 5 χρόνια το WordPress έχει εξυπηρετήσει κόσμο και κοσμάκι. Και αυτό είναι που μετράει.

Μια νέα υπηρεσία από το Google σε preview release προς το παρόν.

Τι είναι το Google Friend Connect; Πρόκειται για μια υπηρεσία που παρέχει social features σε ιστοσελίδες που δεν έχουν τέτοια χαρακτηριστικά. Στην ουσία παρέχει social gadgets, που εύκολα εισάγονται στις σελίδες του site σας με απλό copy & paste.

Τι είναι τα social gadgets; Πρόκειται για την απάντηση αιτήσεων που γίνονται από τον κώδικα που εισάγεται στην ιστοσελίδα σας προς τις backend εφαρμογές που στηρίζουν την υπηρεσία Google Friend Connect. Για παράδειγμα το gadget που δείχνει τα μέλη της ιστοσελίδας σας: ο κωδικός που κάνατε paste στις σελίδες σας, ζητά από την αντίστοιχη εφαρμογή του Google την λίστα των ατόμων που έχουν αποδεχθεί να είναι μέλη του web site σας. Αφού λάβει την απάντηση, εφαρμόζει κάποιες επιλογές στο skinning και στη συνέχεια εμφανίζει το συγκεκριμένο gadget με τη λίστα των μελών της ιστοσελίδας σας.

Πώς λειτουργεί; Η όλη ουσία είναι ο συνδυασμός διαφόρων social networks και των διαφόρων accounts που σας παρέχουν πρόσβαση σε διάφορες υπηρεσίες. Δηλαδή, κάποιος για να έχει μια ολοκληρωμένη αντίληψη και χρήση της υπηρεσίας, απαιτούνται δύο πράγματα. Δυνατότητα να κάνει Sign In, με κάποιο account π.χ. Google account, Yahoo account, OpenID κ.ά. και στη συνέχεια να είναι μέλος σε κάποιο social network π.χ. Facebook για το λεγόμενο link in.

Κάνεις login για παράδειγμα με το Google account σου στο Google Friend Connect και στη συνέχεια συνδέεσε με διάφορα social networks για τα οποία έχεις ήδη κάποιο account. Έτσι δεδομένα που παρέχουν τα social networks, όπως η λίστα των φίλων σας, γίνονται διαθέσιμα και στο Google Friend Connect. Ειδικότερα αν επιλέξετε την από default στο off επιλογή: Pubblish activities, όλοι οι φίλοι σας στο social network που χρησιμοποιείτε θα ενημερώνονται για τις δραστηριότητές σας σε ιστοσελίδες που χρησιμοποιούν το Google Friend Connect και στις οποίες έχετε γίνει μέλος ( εννοείται μέλος διαμέσω του Google Friend Connect ).

Η υπηρεσία Google Friend Connect, όσον αφορά τους ιδιοκτήτες ιστοσελίδων, παρέχει ένα adminsitration panel που παρέχει δυνατότητα προσθήκης των διαφόρων gadgets, ακόμη και gadgets που έχουν δημιουργήσει τρίτοι developers ( εκτός google ), να δείτε τα μέλη σας, reports κ.ά.

Θετικά: Όπως είπα και στην αρχή…προσθήκη λειτουργιών social στη σελίδα σας. Πράγμα όχι εύκολο για ιδιοκτήτες ιστοσελίδων που δεν έχουν δυνατότητες να αναπτύξουν δικές τους social λειτουργίες ή να χρησιμοποιήσουν APIs διαφόρων υπηρεσιών.

Αρνητικά: Όπως και στην περίπτωση των εφαρμογών που βασίζονται στο Google App, έτσι και στην περίπτωση του Google Friend Connect, παραδίδεται τους επισκέπτες σας στα χέρια του Google. Δεν είμαι υπερβολικός είμαι ρεαλιστής. Το Google προσπαθεί να απλώσει μια ομπρέλα ελέγχου πάνω από τις ιστοσελίδες των απλών ιδιοκτητών, αλλά και πάνω από υπηρεσίες άλλων όπως το Facebook Connect και το Data Availability project του MySpace.

Όλοι οι Bittorrent trackers που έχουν χτιστεί πάνω στον κώδικα TBDev, κινδυνεύουν άμεσα από επιθέσεις τύπου Cross Site Scripting. Μια επιτυχημένη επίθεση θα μπορούσε να έχει ως αποτέλεσμα το deface της αρχικής σελίδας ( ίσως η ελαφρύτερη συνέπεια ), την απόκτηση δικαιωμάτων διαχειριστή από τον hacker, απόκτηση δικαιωμάτων ενός οποιουδήποτε χρήστη και πρόσβαση σε λογαριασμούς χρηστών.

Μπορείτε να διαβάσετε περισσότερα στη σελίδα: CSRF Bounce – TBDev ( πρόκειται για τη σελίδα του ατόμου που ανακάλυψε το exploit και δημοσίευσε οδηγίες και τον κώδικα για την εκμετάλλευσή του ). Το TorrentFreak επίσης δημοσίευσε σχετικό άρθρο ( για καλό και για κακό προτιμήστε το torrentfreak για να ενημερωθείτε ).

Αξίζει να τονισθεί ότι το exploit αυτό + αρκετά άλλα δημοσιεύθηκαν από τον τύπο στον οποίο ανήκει το blog Rook Security με την ευκαρία των γενεθλίων του…για να το γιορτάσει ο άνθρωπος!!! Μάλιστα αναφέρει και επιθέσεις που μπορούν να γίνουν στο CPanel ( CPanal όπως το αναφέρει για τους λόγους του ίσως ), πολύ δημοφιλές control panel για linux servers.

Προς ικανοποίηση όλων των bloggers που χρησιμοποιούν τη δωρεάν υπηρεσία wordpress.com (σας παρέχει το δικό σας blog του τύπου κάτι.wordpress.com) εφαρμόστηκε η νέα έκδοση 2.5. Έτσι έχουμε καινούριο Dashboard, νέο look και κάποια έξτρα features. Μπορείτε να διαβάσετε τα χαρακτηριστικά της νέας έκδοσης εδώ, ενώ σας θυμίζω ότι η downloadable έκδοση του wordpress (αν θέλετε να το εγκαταστήσετε στο δικό σας hosting account ή server) εκδόθηκε λίγο καιρό πριν και διανέμεται διαμέσω του wordpress.org

today while building new site uber upload script drilled my mind with ERROR: Failed to load config file uu_default_config.pm

i tried everything – i set permissions,paths correctly but no clue …. after 1 hr of working and checking each config file step by step i found out that i missed ‘ yes cama in common config file …oh !

silly project intrnetnt sites optimization with hostgator.com and hostgator review

i have multiple domain – some are production and some are for experiments. They are hosted on different parts of world along with USA. now i want to gather all differnet hosting accounts to USA server for cost cutting as i want to new laptop. so imoved from servage.net, hostmaster.com ,and some small hosts to hostgator.com.

now time to tell something about hostgator.com. i had accounts with many shared hosting providers – all said excellent service for cheap price ( i know .. i know what you will say “cheap $” means cheap service. But not with http://hostgator.com. 600GB of space with 1TB bandwidth for $9.75 ( ya .. costly compare to those $4.95 hosts…” ) but worth it. First thing yo will impress with
php – no safe mode restriction due to phpusexec and you can have own php.ini file.
Next major one shell access – yes they will provide shell access. Amazing speed of servers that you can never expect on shared hosts ( i am with past 1 year …. with 15 mins of downtime yes .. 15 mins in 365 days …) you can host adult sites also. No contracts and clean billing with cc and paypal options.

THE MAJOR feature is live! chat no more hrs of waiting with mails and phones. instant help at any time 24×7 – 365 days. ok .. ok .. give a trial account there and see.

while moving from my german host to hostgator i faced some problems. i have no personal internet due to ISP issue and i can;t do all from key logger/malware filled internet / cybercafes.
so only way is my office netowrk which is only allows firefox to access internet. what do ? i need ftp client to transfer files. and both hosts using different controlpanels. so no ftp cleints and files are 10k + in 10 folders each with 10+k + files. hummm.. i thought that evey desktop application should be online version so i am searched for web based ftp client which support site to site transfers with $0 … At last i got it …. nttp://net2ftp.com wonderful free script .

You can copy files from one ftp server to other server online – no plugins need to install it is php based application. so i downloaded and installed in my site… install is nothing but single clik.

ok accessed first time using browser – excellent user interface and ton of feature. you can download entire files in .zip , you can upload files using java or flash uploader.
many many ….. really all these features are $0 costs to you thanks to net2ftp.

at last i completed transfer files from german host to hostgator.com …. so earlier i hosted database on one host,files on one host so now all hostgator.com and $$ saved.

I hope my input was worthwhile thus far. I believe that the videoegg implementation is the most suitable as comes close to Youtube’s interface and, there is no clear indication that offerings by BitGravity and LimelightNetworks offer video upload ala youtube style. (If I’m wrong on this one please correct me.) After doing some research on which platform/scripting language would be most appropriate (more on this later), I learnt PHP today and got the VideoEgg publisher and player running fine on my computer. My setup is as follows.

- Windows XP Professional Edition sp2
- Apache HTTP Server 2.0.59
- PHP 4.4.4
- Mozilla Firefox 2.0/Internet Explorer 7

I had encountered some problems installing the publisher, in both Firefox and IE. I had to restart my computer to resume the installation. After that, the publisher installed and loaded. I tested uploads with different types of video files; 3gp, wmv and mpg. All 3 successfully got encoded and uploaded. The files played smoothly in both browsers. I feel that it works generally faster, and more responsive, in Firefox rather than in IE.

I chose PHP over other scripting languages after careful consideration about the requirements for screenplayer.sg. Further, I found a local web hosting company www.clever.com.sg, which offers very affordable hosting of PHP and MySQL web applications. I think their Cleverest plan (although sounds lame and corny) is most suitable for screenplayer.sg. Cleverest plan details:

- 2000MB space (1000MB web and 1000MB email)
- 1 free domain name
- unmetered monthly traffic
- one-time setup: free
- Price: S$24.95 per month

For inital startup, this plan might be able to provide you with the infrastructure, web space and bandwidth you require, at a cost that you can afford. Note: Always read the fine print!

You can find open source solutions for many of screenplayer.sg’s features on websites such as http://www.scripts.com/php-scripts/. All run on PHP scripting and can use MySQL as the database. Here are my recommendations:

To be frank I’ve only learnt PHP some hours ago. I do believe that I can put these different pieces together to create a functional video hosting website. But, I STRONGLY suggest you consult the services of an experienced PHP developer if you seriously intened to bring this site to the masses. This is a very ambitious project in terms of scale and complexity. Hence, it would be safer to leave it to the experts. They will be able to optimise the site for performance tuning, security, and react to bugs and problems accordingly. (Note that this is different from hiring webapp development companies who implement their own system and coding.)

Nevertheless, I will attempt to build a complete, functioning site. No promises as to when I’ll comeplete it though. Do keep me informed of any new developments.
