Since we first announced captions in Google Video and YouTube, weve introduced multiple caption tracks, improved search functionality and even automatic translation. Each of these features has had great personal significance to me, not only because I helped to design them, but also because Im deaf. Today, Im in Washington, D.C. to announce what I consider the most important and exciting milestone yet: machine-generated automatic captions.

Virtually everyone who uses the internet knows about Google Search. For those who don’t know about it, Google Search (let’s call it Google from now on) is a web search engine that allows users to find webpages by simply using keywords. Google is the most-used search engine in the Web with several hundred million queries each day. Despite the large number of users, only a small percentage are probably using Google’s real potential.

In this article I shall share tips on how to optimize searches in Google.

This is what you see when you head to Google.com.

Google’s home page is rather plain, don’t you think? Yet, its simplicity is what makes it a gem. Not only does the simple layout make it easier to use, it loads much faster too. The only parts of the Google homepage that most users will use are the text box where users input their keyword queries, and the Google Search button.

What about the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button? What is it for?

The special I’m Feeling Lucky button will take you to the first result that your search query fetches. This is most useful when your keywords are very specific such as a name of a company or person. For example, searching for google will bring you nowhere but back to the Google home page and searching for wikipedia will take you to Wikipedia.org. It’s pretty straightforward but be warned that it will not magically take you where you actually want to go. For most cases the I’m Feeling Lucky button just doesn’t make users feel lucky at all. The Google Search button should be used for keywords that are not very specific or can be considered generalized.

Use words that are likely to appear in the pages that you want to see.

Keep keywords concise for the best result. In other words, use as few words as possible. Avoid using common words such as the, where and on (also known as stop words) as the consequence for this will be a bloated search result with links to pages that you don’t really need or, in some cases, no difference at all. Save the few key presses instead and put less strain on your fingers. Additionally, don’t worry about words that you end up typing in mixed case. Google isn’t case-sensitive at all except for the word “or” which I will explain further down.

It also helps to be more specific when searching. Let’s give examples to explain that in more detail:

Let’s say that I want to download free software. I decide to search for free software downloads. The result page would give me links to websites that offer free downloads of software but there is a catch – most of them are shareware, trials and demos! Another term for free software is freeware and this is specific to software that are completely free. I then change my search to freeware downloads and this time I find the pages that I actually want. Although free software and freeware may mean the very same thing, using a more specific keyword helps us find what we want faster.

There is something that changed about the Google now and the Google I once knew. Google used to ignore common words or stop words from the search string but now it is always included.

Avoid using questions for your query. For Google, questions are nothing but a set of keywords for it to search for and it will only return the websites that contain all – yes, all – the words that it finds in the query. Questions may work – and most of the time it would give you the links that you want – but it is more efficient to search only for the words that you expect to find in the page that you are looking for unless, of course, if you’re looking for that specific question, phrase or sentence in your search in which case you will need to use quotation marks.

Search for quotes, phrases or sentences by “quoting them”.

Without quotation marks Google considers a phrase or sentence as a set of keywords and it will return all pages that contain the keywords regardless of where the words are located in a page. This can be troublesome when searching, for a movie quote perhaps. Fortunately, there is a way to search for such keywords and that is by enclosing them in quotation marks for example, instead of Sheep in wolf's clothing use "Sheep in wolf's clothing". If you try my examples you will notice that they have very different results and that the latter does not return links that contain wolf in sheep’s clothing.

It is worth noting that common phrases and quotes now show the same result with or without quoting them. Google must have updated their software to do this and I think it is a nice feature since most people don’t use quotes in their searches. Keywords without quotation marks still do have more returned results most of the time compared to searches that have them enclosed in quotes.

Other than quotes or sentences, quotations marks may also be used for multiple word proper names such as the full name of a person, a name of a company, etc. It also seems that Google has taken out the 32 word limit that they imposed before although I doubt that such a limit will ever be reached often.

You may also use quotation marks to group words together. All operators will consider quoted text as single words.

Have more control of your results by learning the Google search syntax.

Sometimes we need more control. Fortunately, a special syntax for advance search does exist. By using specific special characters other than the already mentioned quotation marks in your search you will be able to get more relevant results. Any number of these characters or operators may be used within each search query. These operators are as follows:

The + operator

The + operator forces Google to search for the specific term that proceeds the operator. We may see the + operator as somewhat more similar to an = or equals operator found in most programming languages although the syntax for use is very different. Due to the changes in the way Google searches for websites, the + operator has lost much of its functionality nowadays except for disabling automatic stemming which is a feature of Google that enables searching for similar words such as the similarity of favorite and favourite. Other than this, there might be no other way to use it.

To use the + operator,  one must immediately precede the word that they want to force Google to search with the + sign and not put a space in between them. For example, to search for a site with the word favorite and not favourite you use +favorite but never + favorite. Notice the space after + in the second example.

The – operator

The – operator is the complete opposite of the + operator and, in a sense, we may call it a minus or NOT operator. It forces Google to not search for the word proceeding it. Using the – operator is similar to the + operator – just use the – sign instead of the + sign before the word with no space in between. For example, to search for a site that contains the word humpback but without the word whale you should enter humpback -whale. Just like the + operator, no space must come between the – sign and whale.

Used correctly, the – operator can be a very important and powerful way to find elusive pages.

The ~ operator

The ~ operator, also known as the tilde or synonym operator, tells Google to search for the specific word as well as synonyms of that word as well as words with alternative endings. Using the tilde operator can significantly broaden the search results.

The tilde operator is to be used in the same way as the + and – operators. The word to search must be preceded by the tilde without a space in between them. For example, to search for words with dirty and its synonyms one must type it as ~dirty and not ~ dirty. Such a search would return web pages that contain the word dirty as well as words that are synonymous or similar to it such as funny and dirtiest.

This operator works best when applied to words that are common or generalized with many synonyms. If you are looking for words and their specific synonyms take a look at the next operator.

The OR and | operator

The OR operator, which we can also input as a vertical bar or |, applies to the keywords adjacent or on both sides of it. The OR operator tells Google to return pages that contain at least one of the words that are separated by the operator or all of the words but not pages that do not contain them at all. The following examples are all similar in function:

• tough OR strong OR heavy
• tough | strong | heavy
• tough|strong|heavy
  

The examples above would return pages containing at least one or all of the search terms, in this case tough, strong and heavy, but not pages that don’t have them.

Take note that when using OR, it must always be in uppercase with spaces on each side. A lowercase “or” will be considered by Google to be a word and not an operator. Using the vertical bar or | as the operator, on the other hand, does not require the spaces on each side.

The * operator

The * or wildcard operator searches for one or more undetermined words in a phrase or sentence and is best used when the keywords or phrase is enclosed in quotes. Using the wildcard operator is simple. All one needs to do is to replace the undetermined words with the asterisk sign or *. For example:

"* to * talk" will bring you results that contain heart-to-heart talk, how to trash talk, and how to smooth talk among a plentiful list of possibilities.

psychological * would return pages that contain psychological bulletin, psychological warfare, and psychological science.

… And we can mix them all?

Yes we can! You may use any or all of the above tips in one search query as long AND ONLY as you require them. If you think you don’t need them you don’t have to force yourself to use them. It’s that simple.

On a side note, all of the aforementioned tips can be done through the Advanced Search section of Google but learning the syntax is much more flexible and quicker to use, at least in my opinion.

On Wednesday, Microsoft announced it’s teaming up with answer engine Wolfram Alpha to beef up its Bing search engine.

This will give Bing users access to Wolfram Alpha’s algorithms and curated data.

The team-up marks yet another step in Microsoft’s battle with Google in the Web search market.

Double-Teaming Fat, the Flu and Math

By itself, Wolfram Alpha isn’t designed to provide the same kind of information people generally look for when performing a search on a mainstream engine like Google, Yahoo or Bing. Instead of providing links pertaining to keywords, Wolfram answers questions by computing massive sets of structured data it’s collected. By adding Wolfram Alpha’s capabilities, Microsoft could blend in Wolfram’s knack for hard-core data queries and calculations.

For example, “We will bring nutritional information and tools into Bing’s search results, as well as some straight-up hard math and homework help,” announced Tracey Yao and Pedro Silva in Bing’s blog post on the partnership.

Bing is including Wolfram Alpha’s body mass index interactive form on its results page so users can find out how their body mass ratio compares with the recommended levels. Also, Bing users searching for specific food items will see tabs and labels providing nutrition information about those items. For example, they’ll be able to compare oranges and kiwi fruit to see which has more vitamins.

Users who want to learn more about math will be able to use Wolfram Alpha’s ability to solve math functions.

Microsoft is rolling out these features now, Yao and Silva said. Microsoft declined comment when asked about future developments in Bing.

Searching for Market Mastery

Teaming up with Wolfram Alpha is Microsoft’s latest move in its struggle to dethrone Google from its dominance of the search engine market.

In October, Microsoft announced a strategic deal with Twitter and Facebook to integrate real-time information into Bing searches. It has launched a Twitter search beta in Bing that can collect and sort tweets in various ways. Microsoft is also working on Facebook integration into the search engine.

In September, Microsoft announced a beta of a Visual Search feature for Bing. This feature groups images into structured results that Microsoft calls “galleries.”

Not to be outdone, Google also announced it’s adding a Twitter-in of its own the same day Redmond made its announcement.

Teaming up with Wolfram Alpha might provide Bing the boost Microsoft is looking for. “One of the issues with Bing is that, since it’s from Microsoft, it isn’t seen as trendy,” Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told the E-Commerce Times. “Wolfram Alpha is cutting edge and significantly adds to the impression that Bing is something different and should be tried.”

The whole point is to get people to try Bing, Enderle pointed out. “It doesn’t matter if Bing is better, if people won’t try it and stay with it,” he explained. “If people believe it’s worth trying Microsoft will gain market share.”

Tiba-tiba ada mahasiswa lain datang, dan meneriaki mahasiswa tersebut dengan teriakan,”Maling… Ayo Hajar!” Tiga mahasiswa tersebut mempunyai informasi yang sama tentang keberadaan maling yang selalu meresahkan mahasiswa.

Di bali “bade” merupakan wadah yang digunakan untuk meng-arak orang yang telah meninggal dunia(layon) secara beramai-ramai oleh keturunannya dan masyarakat setempat menuju ke kuburan/setra untuk diaben. Hal ini sebagai bentuk penghormatan kepada orang yang telah meninggal dunia.

setelah sampai dikuburan, layon dipindahkan dari bade ke wadag untuk dilakukan prosesi ngaben bersama wadag tersebut. Wadag merupakan sebagai simbol kendaraan sang roh menuju ke alam roh (swah loka).

setelah menjalani berbagai tahap upacara ngaben barulah dilakukan pembakaran layon. Hindu percaya manusia terdiri dari 5 unsur(api,tanah,air,udara,ether) dan jika manusia tersebut meninggal maka harus dikembalikan seperti semula. Pembakaran layon merupakan prosesi untuk mengembalikan layon menjadi unsur api,tanah, dan udara.

Google’s one of the biggest companies on the Internet; between search, IM, email and everything else, they have a huge user base. Though, with that comes the worry of how much user data they’ve collected; to remedy this, a tool has been announced, showing users that exact data.

Google has an extremely vast range of services. When you put your mind to it, a person who uses Google products over the competition, when given the choice, would give the company the chance to know about their emails, those they talk to on IM, the things they search for, the videos they watch on YouTube, the documents they’ve shared and stored online, and even the RSS feeds they’re subscribed to (not to mention that’s only a small selection of services, too). That’s a hefty amount of data from one person, and there are some individuals who are seriously concerned about it. Google’s way of dealing with this is Dashboard, a simple service that collects everything together, from YouTube history to Google Docs, and puts it in one easy-to-read feed, displaying all of your interactions with the other tools. You can remove data, if desired, as well as change data collected (such as disabling saved web search history) in order to keep privacy at a maximum.

Google Dashboard will require you to log in again, despite being already logged into Google.com (or whichever international site you use), helping keep things secure. Also, all services aren’t quite added yet, according to MacWorld, so don’t get your hopes up. If you want to give this a shot, head over to Dashboard and have a peek at what Google knows about you.

I might recommend anyone who is a serious Google Search Addict try out these experiments which add to the functionality of your searches.

A key to keeping minds sharp through the later years might entail getting the elderly population online. In a study of 24 people with an average age of 66, researchers found that engaging in Internet searches, along with other online activity, was associated with increased brain function. Before and after the experiment, the subjects’ brains were scanned with fMRI, which shows blood flow and can be used to assess the activity of areas of the brain.

Half of the study group had little or no experience using the Internet, but with just two weeks practice, their brains were already showing increased activity in the frontal gyrus regions. Those areas are important in decision-making and memory. After the two-week period, the brain scans of the previously inexperienced users were similar to those of the control group, whose subjects were Internet savvy. The findings hold promise that one way to preserve brain function in elderly populations is through something as simple as casual web browsing. Pending more research, it would be a low-cost way of keeping aging minds healthy.

Looking for information on the Internet can be a little like going to SuperTarget©.  

You pop in for a four-pack of toilet paper, but one thing leads to another, and before you know it, it’s an hour and a half later and you’re leaving with a cart full of stuff you didn’t even realize you needed.   “New and improved” has to be better than what you used before, right?  That lampshade looked like it could be just the right blue for the guest room.  And how could you possibly pass up those great deals in the clearance section? 

With so many bright, sparkly, free bits of information just a quick click away, the Internet can be just as perilous as all those fully-stocked aisles at SuperTarget©.  Which means we can end up wasting a bunch of time clicking “just one more link,” or investing ourselves in sites that actually turn out to be a far less than what was promised. 

The other extreme is completely avoiding the temptations and potential time-waste of extracurricular searches by having all your information delivered to your digital doorstep using RSS feeds, twitter, Google alerts, and the like.  Sounds convenient, but I think there’s an inherent danger in this sort of passive information consumption.  Your world view, confined to a limited set of voices and channels, will eventually become skewed – no matter how great your sources are to begin with. 

The middle ground is to find a good set of trusted online sites (for me, that includes TED and Social Media Today) and sources (like individual authors and bloggers) to help you navigate the mass of information on the web.  Google certainly has its place, but use your go-to sites as more refined information filters and springboards for content.  And no matter how much you trust a certain authority, don’t automatically assume that a single post is the last word on a particular topic. Be responsible (to yourself!) and check out the writer’s credentials and information sources, and take a look at what others are saying about the same thing.  The web has a funny way of masking complete frauds, and making even outrageous information somehow seem legit.  We’re only human, and our gullible gene seems to exert itself at the most inappropriate times. 

This page posted by UC Berkeley is a great primer for performing web searches and evaluating online information.  Yes, some of it seems like flashes of the obvious, but it doesn’t hurt to be reminded of the simple things that can make all the difference. 

BTW, I happen to LOVE SuperTarget©, but have learned it’s best for me to visit with blinders on and an iron-clad list in hand!

Google has set up an automated service that as their webspider crawls the web any website with malware in the code will have an email sent to the webmaster with a snippet of the bad code so that the webmaster can remove the offending code.

Making this content searchable is going to do much for bringing people the information they are seeking. Its obvious that content on flash and AJAX sites should be indexed, some really great creative sites are done in flash and AJAX, but one would never know about the content that may be extremely well written and invaluable.

Beginning sometime later this month Google will start to index any spreadsheets, documents or presentations that you’ve created in your Google Apps account AND have shared publicly.

This doesn’t mean your documents will be shared with everyone. Rather Google is notifying their users that only publicly shared items will be indexed. Users should double check on any publicly shared items to make sure that they really should be public (here’s how).

While on the surface this may seem like an invasion of privacy, and it might be if you haven’t taken care to make sure you have not shared sensitive items, it also could be a great way for web visitors to search and find your site.

Imagine if you publicly publish a  list of tips and tricks for a product that you work. By linking to this public document you’re telling Google that it’s ok for a user to find the document in a search. Which in this case is exactly what you want.

Rather than be concerned by this as a privacy issue I think everyone should focus on the search potential.

Increasingly potential customers are doing very specific keyword searches on the web. The more links you have from different areas the more likely they are to see you as an authority on the subject matter.

The higher your perceived authority — the less competition that you’ll have

Used smartly, these shared public documents could be another effective way to reach potential clients who increasingly are searching for help on support issues prior to calling in the consultant. The more (free) ways that a potential client can find you – the better!

With the web now offering a quite simply colossal amount of information both helpful and indubitably not, sometimes it’s useful to have another friend to help in the joyous task of information harvest.

Addictomatic is worth stashing away in your bookmarks list, as it will offer you an all encompassing scouring of the web on any topic you fancy scouring. A useful tool as it also searches the content of blogs, twitter, YouTube and Flickr. Handy.

KidsClick is a websearch facility specifically for kids as a safe place to explore and learn. It doesn’t use web spiders or search bots to create its content ‘catalogue’ like other search engines. Instead it is created by librarians, who check the content for suitability. Humans checking the content should mean that it is always appropriate for a younger audience to access.
