To make an HTML page part of the publicly accessible World Wide Web, you need to put it on a web server. If you run your own web server, this procedure is simply a matter of copying the file to the right directory folder. However, you may not have access to a web server that you can use to host your own web site, in which case you’ll need to use a web server run by an Internet service provider (ISP) to host your pages.

A web server is a computer permanently connected to the Internet that uses special software to deliver web pages upon request by web browsers.

Almost all ISPs that offer Internet access also now offer space in which to place your own personal web pages for little or no additional cost, though you may have to pay extra if your site attracts a huge number of visitors or includes very large multimedia files. Be sure to check with the company you’re getting Internet access from to see whether any web space is built into your standard account. This is often a great way to get started with creating a web site because the space is usually free and readily available.

One of the most important choices you’ll need to make when you set up a web site is the name you want to use as the site’s address. If you don’t pay to register a unique domain name of your own, which runs around $10 per year, your site’s address will include the name of your Internet service provider. If you’re willing to pay for it and register a name, you can choose any name that isn’t already used by another company.

If your web hosting service doesn’t offer domain name registration, you can use a domain service such as http://www.godaddy.com. Before registering a new name, you must first perform a search to see whether the name is available; each domain name service offers such a search service at no charge. Keep in mind that you can register a domain name even if you aren’t ready to publish your web site; this is a good idea if you want to make sure you don’t lose the name while you build your site.

One usually thinks that he/she will receive same services with the certain range of price, which type of host it doesn’t matter. This is not a fact. Basically, one will not find differences in the web hosting but if one will carefully analyze there will be a vast difference between each one of them. Some of which are not adequate to user’s business. There are several hosts charging $10 a month for a particular package which one can get at the rate of $5a month with other hosting provider.

Mentioned below are 3 of the steps following which one can end up on an ideal hosting selection.

1. Deciding one’s Price range:

Price is the top most concern. One can spend anything to meet his/her requirements ranging from a few dollars a month to a few hundred. There is no one but the user who knows about his/her requirement and about his/her budget. One should consider it. Here one should find providers offering shared and dedicated hosting solutions. It is quite crucial to know the actual disparity among the two. Normally, it is shared web hosting is more inexpensive as compare to dedicated hosting. In the case of shared hosting their will be several web sites on the same server making it quite affordable for each individual.

Due to this reason only a large amount of individuals and businesses began with shared hosting and its reliability and consistency is increasing day by day due to which several businesses have raised on the basis of price and reliability. One can get web hosting prices generally in the range of $5 to $30 a month. If one will talks about Dedicated hosting then the user will have all the right to exploit entire resources. User will command the web server according to the available resources. When it comes to this type of hosting it will differ in both the price and services. It can be from $99 a month to a huge amount of $300-$400 a month. Certainly, here one will enjoy a reliable service and command over content and customization area.

2. Deciding one’s Needs:

What is the requirement of the user? However, one cannot deny the fact that web hosting has become quite affordable and competitive over the last few years but one should first search out the answers of few of the basic questions. Is user’s requirement is the 100% uptime i.e. 24/7/365 or just the modest uptime i.e. 99.9% which one can find at a cheap price as per the standardization of industry in comparison to a SLA (Service Level Agreement). What is user are Criteria regarding support? Does the requirement is 24/7/365 email support or in addition to it phone support? Loss of potential data is a topic which is quite crucial but generally overlooked by the user. Does user should ensure that his/her web host offers back up / restore services or rather an option to ad it or which one can buy on additional cost. Several user’s take it easy as it is automatic but one should mind it that without proper inquiry and involvement in the package it is not going to be accomplish. Requirement of quantity of email accounts and databases can be the other criteria. If the user possesses employees then the probability is that they would like individual email accounts for the use in interoffice and external communication. While user is opting for a strategy to run an e-commerce shopping cart or rather a community forum of any sort then requirement of one or more databases is must.

Normally, email accounts are standard but several hosts demands additional amount for databases and/or limit as per their business structure. Next, important aspect is the amount of disk space and data transfer required by the user? Now a day’s disk space and data transfer are available quite cheap. It is the Performance, features, reliability, and customer service for which the user is paying. For instance, if in the future user feels requirement of graphics resulting in large data base then it is not bad to have much disk space in advance because user may not feel its importance in beginning but it can be fruitful with respect to future strategy.

3. Accomplishing one’s Homework:

After considering above steps one should go for the research mode. The step deals with the outlook of providers. User should start his/her research from host’s own web site. The web site of several companies has a section called “about us” through which one can inquire about their background/history and a synopsis regarding their products, services, infrastructure etc. one should also go through their terms and policies regarding privacy and service. No doubt, one should be aware of the depth of the lake in which he/she is diving into. This is because several problems may arise later on if the user do not have the in depth knowledge of his/her concern host. By going through these policies one may have insight knowledge on restrictions between providers and which direction one should proceed by avoiding any trouble as per changing scenario. There are several companies delivering a customer testimonial and FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page in addition to it. User can consider Testimonials as a source of providing useful information about kinds of web sites being hosted and the way the company is delivering services to its present customers. If FAQ page delivered by the company is accurate then one can solve majority of problems in a very simple manner, whether the problem is related to sales or technical doesn’t matter. Certainly, one of the crucial ways to conclude research on the concern host is to charge them with questions/need which may not be apparently answered.

Thus at the end we can say that there are literally hundreds of specific needs that any one company or individual requires while searching for web hosting services. The problems and solutions are so much that even a book can be written on it. Thus the above given is a fundamental foundation of steps that will help user in beginning with good success.

In the past, I’ve talked about how important it is for each Web page to have a unique, keyword-rich title to display on a search engine results page.

That advice is still relevant, and will continue to be so in 2010.

But I’m not talking about the “Title Meta Tag” that displays at the very top of your web browser. I’m talking about a different “Title Tag.” This one contains text that pops up in a box when your mouse hovers over a particular word or image on a Web page.

See the grey box with text hovering over the image on the screen-shot below?

Title Tag Displayed on Webpage

That’s a title tag. This device gives you the opportunity to add a fuller, keyword-rich description of the image or word the title refers to. Remember, the search engine spiders are pretty savvy. They want to see unique content. So don’t repeat the same keywords in your title tag. Use slightly different words that still contain the meaning you want to get across to your visitor.

In the example above, the title tag is displayed over a graphic. But you can also add title tags to page links.

If you’re planning on revamping your Web site in the new year, keep title tags in mind. They can be a useful tool to enhance your search engine rankings.

Ubiquitous. You’ve seen them all over the internet, I’m sure. You know what I’m talking about. The fake bullshit “about us” images found on Ye Olde Company’s web sites.

You know the type of photo? One that shows people so happy either they are all criminally insane or they are hopped up on drugs. Or probably both.

Images like these just scream “stock photography.” My question: Why in the world would I ever want to do business with a company that considers me such a flaming idiot?

I’ve included a typical example in this post, alibiet one that is a little more over the top than usual. (Sorry. My source for copyright-free images is rather limited.) These guys are literally jumping in the air. They must have just closed the big Johnson deal. The image name is even “happy workers.” Talk about an oxymoron.

The cousin to this image, of course, it the fake picture of a customer service representative. The person always looks so happy to be taking that customer’s call. They are beautiful people in what looks to be an ultra modern, ultra clean working environment. We all know that the image is 100 percent illusion. We all know the reality looks something a lot more like me. Yes, me, Mr. Shouts from the Abyss. An ugly, grumpy son of bitch sitting in an office cold enough to hang slabs of beef with dirty carpet, insects galore and holes knocked in the wall, surrounded by boxes and shit. That is the true reality of who’s on the other end of the phone. (Edit: I’m not kidding about the temperature at work. It costs money to run the heater, therefore it is disallowed. All of us wear our jackets all day long.)

The internet is a great equalizer. Sometimes it can be hard to tell a legitimate company vs. a guy operating out of his garage just by looking at a web site. The guy in his garage may have the biggest and best designed web site you’ve ever seen. The large company may have a piece of crap web site.

When I see web sites featuring cheesy photos like these on their “About Us” page I always think, “Hmm. This just might be the guy in the garage.” If not, then they must be braindead retards. Either way, it’s always a company that I’d be wise to avoid.

Tuesday Two.Oh! is not meant as an endorsement, but as an exploration of the tools that are out there. Click at your own risk.

Today on Tuesday Two.Oh! we’ll be taking a look at a tool for all you food lovers out there. I wanted to feature something fun for Thanksgiving, and when I stumbled across this site I thought it would fit in perfectly. You can use this site to find new recipies by ingrediant, or browse though vivid and beautiful pictures to choose your next kitchen challenge. I also stumbled upon a restaurant review while clicking around this site. Let’s take a look at Tastespotting.

Find them on Twitter.

From the site: “Founded on the idea that we eat first with our eyes, TasteSpotting is our obsessive, compulsive collection of eye-catching images that link to something deliciously interesting on the other side. Think of TasteSpotting as a highly visual potluck of recipes, references, experiences, stories, articles, products, and anything else that inspires exquisite taste.”

The first thing that I like about this website is the color and pictures. It’s literally a feast for the eyes, if you pardon the cliche!

The page is mostly set up as illustrated above: pictures, with short descriptions beneath them. I think that featuring the pictures like this is smart- it draws the viewer/reader in, and makes clicking almost unavoidable.

Once you’ve narrowed in on something that looks interesting….

…say yummy looking little bread turtles, you can click on the picture to be directed to the page on which the recipe appears. For instance, the turtle recipe comes from a blog named Diamonds for Dessert.

Some pictures will link to restaurant reviews:

on blogs like this:

You can use the search feature on the site to find recipes that include certain ingrediants. For instance, I searched for “persimmons” and came up with this result:

If you sign up for an account with the site you can submit recipes and mark favorites. I thought the marking is a good though, and won’t clutter up your social bookmarking or browser bookmarks. The sign up was quick and easy.

There is a lot to experience, recipe wise, on Tastespotting. As represented below, there are too many pages to just scroll through. Enjoy this site, and maybe take home a few ideas for Thanksgiving.

All in, I liked this site. The one thing I thought might be lacking was some sort of automatic filtering; meaning, if I could set up a search, and any time a recipe came in matching my preset requirements, I got an email. That would be a nice addition to the site. Other than that the site really does do what it sets out to do.

Have you ever linked to a web site only to leave right away because it was cluttered and confusing?

Have you ever linked to a web site only to leave right away because it was cluttered and confusing?

It happens all the time. Why struggle through a disorganized mess when it’s easy to hop off and head to another destination that offers the same services?

Just like in real life, clutter on the web presents lack of focus. What’s less obvious is how a visually appealing website can suffer from the same problem.

Hidden problems with hierarchy

Visual confusion occurs when too many elements on a page carry the same weight visually. There’s no clear starting point, or hierarchy. So a visitor’s eyes dart about the page and more or less fight to figure out where to land first.

In another situation, your company name, tagline and main navigation are positioned atop your homepage; where you want users to see it right away; yet this isn’t necessarily how someone experiences the page. If, for example, your logo and main navigation are muted in design as compared to a right-hand sidebar sporting an array of eye-catching graphics, the visitor’s focus is pulled to those jazzier images. Their eyes glance over the top of the page such that it may not even register. Your main message is instantly diluted.

Good-looking design does not guarantee optimum user experience

It’s like when you go into a furniture store and see a chair that’s sharp and stylish yet is uncomfortable to sit in. You pass it up and search for something that both looks and feels right.

Your website can be much the same when form trumps function. A bugaboo here is that a nicely laid-out page does not immediately present itself as problematic — it looks fine to the naked eye.

That’s where usability testing comes in. The testing reveals hidden problems that hinder your site from working at peak level.

A costly step to overlook

It perplexes me how a business can launch a website without first seeing how the site is perceived and used by target audiences. This type of testing is an undervalued and overlooked step to website success.

Meanwhile, the same company takes pains to put a lot of effort into search engine optimization of keywords, tags and other elements of coding. So great; you figure out how to rank high in search results, only to misguide those eyeballs when they reach your lovely site.

Repeat after me: Usability testing is not a luxury

There are companies that specialize in user experience. Depending on the depth and purpose of your site you may want to fork out the dough to bring in an expert. Many web developers offer this service, too. I advise at least going the latter route. Particularly when you’ve got lots of forms an/or e-commerce going on, it can be money well spent.

If purse strings don’t allow paying for usability testing, take matters into your own hands. It need not be a costly complex process.

And to prove it, my next post will offer tips on how you can conduct usability testing for low or no cost. Stay tuned.

Have you, too, noticed web sites that look good but lack focus? Do you think more sites can benefit from usability testing? Comments welcome.

There are two people in our family who are just so funny that you love to be around them and often the comment is heard, “if we could get Sharon and Carol together one day, we would die from laughter.”

Sharon lives in Indiana and Carol in Wisconsin, so it has not happened yet, but Sharon has begun blogging. She was shamed into it really by a couple of bloggers, okay, me and her friend. She tried her hand, Just who are you people? « Braindebris’s Weblog, and was (as we suspected) hysterical. She is one of ‘those’ people, who if she wrote regularly enough would be publishing a book. She is that funny, just check out the The Immortal Rabbit « Braindebris’s Weblog if you want to split a gut.

She took a long break from blogging, much to our disgust, and is back now on a weekly blog schedule. You would think she has a life or something! She also mentioned it takes a good hour to put a blog post together. Who knew!

So, this morning, I checked how her weekend was and she brought up the often mysterious workings of the blogosphere and the people who take the time to read your blog but rarely write comments.

My readership is not huge, it has dropped since I have gotten less regular in posting. However, in the beginning, when my readership would hit 1,000 for the month, I never had commenters, other than one. There were 999 people out there lurking. XUP always comments, all the way from Canada. Aren’t you ashamed fellow Americans? I have to get comments from Canada. Pollyanna Rainbow Sunshine and the Needles of Doom often commented, but I have been really remiss commenting on their blog lately. Don’t you love that name though!

I have also been blogging a bit less lately myself, as I work on my eternal update to my website. I feel like one of those people on the commercial, staring wide eyes, pupils dilated from staring at the screen, mind numb … anyway, you get the not pretty picture. I only have one section left to go on the website and am soooo look forward to it being done.

This morning, here is a copy my monthly stats. Notice the slow decline.

So, I checked Search terms.

“no blood for oil Viggo” – as in Viggo Mortensen, no surprise there. Half of my readership is searching for “Viggo” - Talk about stalkers!

“Worms …” – EUWWW! especially when in the house.

“actor with low ears” - Okay, is this person casting a movie? I have written about actors, and I have written a post due to the lovely commercial based on the old song “do your ears hang low. ” But, I have NEVER written about an actor with low ears. I am not even sure why you would want to find an actor with low ears.

In an effort to raise my stats, I realize that I have three sure winners:

Viggo Mortensen

photography

Movie reviews

Okay, Viggo Mortensen is hot and I do understand the fascination. He keeps his private life mysterious and he’s hot and he likes dark chocolate and he’s hot. What more could you want? The only thing is, I do not actually know Mr. Mortensen (I love his name by the way— Viggo Mortensen—-it’s lyrical. This is coming from someone named VanVleck. Not so lyrical.

So, I shall now vow to make more of an effort to review movies about Viggo Mortensen and you, my kind readers (numbers 13 to 30 and occasionally 1,000) shall occasionally drop me a line to let me know what you like, or do not like, on my blog.

Oh, and I will try not to be a stalker myself.

http://www.dealtaker.com/blackfriday.html

I’ve realized that while black Friday is good for getting Christmas shopping done early, it is also an opportunity for retails to take advantage of the non savvy consumer. Here are a couple of things to watch out for:

Look out for limited quantity deals – You’ve seen the ads for that great TV deal…52′ LCD flat panel TV for $400. Oh ..but did you see the fine print…”Quantity limited to 2…no rainchecks..first come first serve..first born son requested..” Ok…maybe the last one is exaggerated (slightly) but that’s how they get you. So you wait in line at the door and rush in the store only to find out that you missed the deal. Oh well….might as well buy some of the higher priced stuff while your there huh?? The retailer is now smiling all the way to your bank! Don’t fall for it! If the quantity is limited to less than 50 don’t go because you most likely won’t get it.

If it is out of stock, don’t buy it – Well, not if you need it by Christmas anyway. Yeah you would think that 20 days is enough for the retailer to restock but I’ve heard too many horror stories about people waiting MONTHS for back ordered Christmas gifts.

Don’t be fooled by the word SALE - Start checking prices now for your gifts. Just because they claim it’s a Black Friday deal, doesn’t mean it’s to lowest price of the season.

Bring a posse that doesn’t include your young kids – Bringing infants and toddlers to a Black Friday sale is just not a smart plan. Especially if you plan to get to the store before opening and wait in line with the other insane people. Don’t believe me, watch the video below. Not pretty.

Check online for deals first - Why wait in the cold when the same item is online? Especially if it can be picked up at the store the same day like some retailers are doing.

Anyway I hope these tips are helpful. Have a safe, pleasant and blessed shopping experience on Black Friday!

This e-mail landed in my inbox touting the wonders of this new social security Web site and how it will let you see how the finances are accruing for you. Now, personally I don’t want to even get into this site because it’ll probably have me daydreaming about how I could one day use it to help me better plan my retirement. But then that “one day” would probably be the day the site–or whatever replaces the internet– will be “down” because social security is defunct, like “well we just ran out of money, sorry about.” (sigh) Well, it would be good to recommend to all the older retired people you know. Enjoy!

Dear Colleague:

I am pleased to inform you that Social Security’s online Retirement Estimator, available at www.socialsecurity.gov/estimator, can now be used to provide immediate and personalized benefit estimates to Medicare only beneficiaries. This means that people who have enrolled in Medicare, but have not yet filed forSocial Security benefits, will no longer need to contact their local office to obtain an estimate of their retirement benefits.

In addition, Social Security’s Commissioner, Michael J. Astrue, has announced that next year the online Retirement Estimator will be the first online service in all of government to be made available in Spanish.

We ask that you share this important information with those parties who would find it of interest.

Thank you in advance for your continued support.

One common method of driving customers to your product or service can be a little freebie teaser to

One common method of driving customers to your product or service can be a little freebie teaser to get prospects interested in talking to you. That type of freebie content could include case studies, white papers, and the topic of this post; The Tutorial.

While there is nothing wrong with providing context specific tutorials in principle;

If you don’t do it right, don’t bother!

The purpose of utilizing that tool is to demonstrate what you can do for me, increasing the likelihood of me purchasing from you.

If you just frustrate the hell out of me, you fail at that. Big time.

The Tutorial (not) for dummies

Yes, I am a tech manager. But one thing I know squat about is graphics and graphic software. Whatever your graphics software of choice is, I won’t be able to use it – trust me.

Anyway, I was pointed to a tutorial that would enable beginners (Me!) to use a pre-built template to add a particular graphic theme to a background image. I thought the idea was great, and downloaded the instructions and template.

The tutorial may have been perfect for someone with a graphic design background (not that anyone with that background would likely need a tutorial) but it pissed me off because it neglected the first, and most important part;

Step number one!

Yup.

Step number one was missing in action.

This tutorial assumed that my uber-excellent graphics skills would enable me to insert my graphic image of choice into that template, and that I could then joyfully follow along with the remaining steps in the tutorial.

I failed at step one. It did not tell me the basic information needed to get started. Namely how to put my image into their nice magic template. Finally in frustration I just deleted the thing.

When doing a tutorial, you cannot assume that just because you know step 1, that everyone does. In fact, if you are going to assume, assume the opposite, that we are all idiots and need it spelled out in capital letters.

But what if???

Of course!

If your tutorial has an implicit understanding that it is only of value to those with existing PhD’s in aeronautical engineering, just say it!

You will save the rest of us frustration and time because you are defining your audience right up front.

Minimum Viable Product, a new phrase, a new idea, but it makes a lot of sense. It works like this. H

Minimum Viable Product, a new phrase, a new idea, but it makes a lot of sense. It works like this.

Historically, the release of a new product occurred after a significant investment in expensive development and then a heavy investment in actual production, usually all behind closed doors. A big secret until the day of release and the big announcement, hoping, betting the company’s future and possibly the company itself, that it will be well received and will bring back the return expected and projected….and if it doesn’t, then what?

It has certainly happened enough times.

Now the idea is to meaningfully test without making the huge investment in development and production. Finding out if it will really sell or not.

In the past market researchers and small business owners would ask around to customers, distributors, whomever, if they would buy this new product. Just as frequently they would get positive feedback supporting the go ahead decision, and thus dive into this major investment as every new product or service release requires.

The operative question being “would you buy this?”

The important point is that frequently despite a person saying he would buy, businesses learned this opinion may not actually transfer to a real purchase.

Now with the economy being as depressed as it is, small business owners cannot afford to launch failures and the cost of development is too high to speculate on.

So we use the Minimum Viable Product development process as follows:

With the advent of the Internet, smart small business owners have figured out that a web site page can be made for very few dollars and ideas can be marketed for sale without any investment in development or production at all…yet. If enough purchasers are willing to buy as indicated by a purchase request, an actual order then make it and ship away, knowing in advance it is a winner.

No sales, drop the idea or product.

With this concept you no longer ask for opinions. You can count the orders and determine if interest is high enough to warrant the investment.

You can also figure out price points, and valuable features all by what is offered and what is purchased.

Clearly there is the issue of the time involved from order to shipping, if you have not yet manufactured, but presumably you have it all figured out.

No expensive mistakes, very low cost to test, and very reliable results. Makes sense. Since new product and services are the lifeblood of business, this concept has much value and power.

Use it.

The Lori Drew case, which I blogged about a few weeks ago should be over very soon. According to Professor Orin Kerr, the Justice Department will file a motion to dismiss in the case either tomorrow or the following day.

Professor Kerr represented Drew, taking her case pro bono. In the words of a Volokh Conspiracy commenter, “If I ever need an example of a case taken to establish an important principle on behalf of a client who is scum of the earth, this case will fit the bill.” I agree. This woman is disgusting, but the government’s charges against her are even worse. I am reminded of one of my favorite Supreme Court cases, National Socialist Party of America v. Village of Skokie, where reportedly Jewish ACLU attorneys reportedly defended the neo-Nazi group’s right to assemble and march, even in a predominantly Jewish community.

Congratulations to Professor Kerr, who is an expert in criminal law, criminal procedure, and computer crime.

Congratulations to Kerr for this much-needed victory for every Internet user. The fact that a Professor of Law from Washington, D.C. was able to not only brief a case, but actually argue it in court in California simply for the good of the public is an absolutely outstanding life accomplishment.

Professor Kerr and I have had some very insightful and interesting email correspondence in the past, and I am happy to celebrate this job well done.

Thank you, Professor!
