when Robert Hooke discovered his law in 1676, he published it as an anagram, “ceiiinossssttuv”, which he revealed two years later as the Latin “ut tensio, sic vis”, meaning “as the extension, so the force”. This ensured that if someone else made the same discovery, Hooke could reveal the anagram and claim priority, thus buying time in which he alone could build upon the discovery.

“Work. Finish. Publish.”

In 1999, Garry Kasparov, the greatest chessplayer of all time, played and eventually won a game of chess against a “World Team” which decided its moves by the votes of thousands of chessplayers, many rank amateurs; instead of the easy victory he expected, he got the most challenging game of his career, a game he called “the greatest game in the history of chess”.

The adoption of the journal system was achieved by subsidizing scientists who published their discoveries in journals. This same subsidy now inhibits the adoption of more effective technologies, because it continues to incentivize scientists to share their work in conventional journals, and not in more modern media.

Einstein’s greatest contribution to science was his theory of gravity, often called the general theory of relativity. He worked on and off on this theory between 1907 and 1915, often running into great difficulties. By 1912, he had come to the astonishing conclusion that our ordinary conception of geometry, in which the angles of a triangle add up to 180 degrees, is only approximately correct, and a new kind of geometry is needed to correctly describe space and time. This was a great surprise to Einstein, and also a great challenge, since such geometric ideas were outside his expertise. Fortunately for Einstein and for posterity, he described his difficulties to a mathematician friend, Marcel Grossman. Grossman said that many of the ideas Einstein needed had already been developed by the mathematician Bernhard Riemann. It took Einstein three more years of work, but Grossman was right, and this was a critical point in the development of general relativity.

In April 2008, Cameron Neylon, a chemist from the University of Southampton, used FriendFeed messaging to post a request for assistance in building molecular models. Pretty quickly Pawel Szczesny replied, and said he could help out.

How could you measure the different sorts of contributions a scientist can make on a blog – outreach, education, and research? These are not easy questions to answer. Yet they must be answered before scientific blogging will be accepted as a valuable professional scientific contribution.

making many more types of content available than just scientific papers; allowing creative reuse and modification of existing work through more open licensing and community norms; making all information not just human readable but also machine readable; providing open APIs to enable the building of additional services on top of the scientific literature, and possibly even multiple layers of increasingly powerful services.

Wikipedia is a second example where scientists have missed an opportunity to innovate online.

Nature’s 2006 trial of open commentary on papers undergoing peer review at Nature. The trial was not a success.

The contrast between the science comment sites and the success of the amazon.com reviews is stark.

Conferences often get me buzzing with too many things to think about, and I’m grateful for the long train ride home to catch my breath and process my thoughts. As noted earlier, I spent this past week at the eLearning Guild Annual Gathering in Orlando. In the spirit of live blogging, this post will be in short bursts of impressions and thoughts – I’ll be coming back to some of these ideas in the future, I’m sure.

Crowdsourcing. Jeff Howe got me thinking about what’s changing… He pointed out that visible activities are often not “the thing” – the thing is what’s underneath or behind them. And all of the activity we’re seeing on the web is reflective of a changed “habit of mind” that favors democracy – everyone wants his or her say in customization, decisions, etc. The implications of that tickle at the edge of my brain. I’m wondering if the implications go well beyond web activity and spill over into overall attitudes… are we developing into a people who want a more direct voice in everything? What will that mean?

Trend headlines. The research trends session featured David Mallon (Bersin), Claire Schooley, (Forrester), and Bryan Chapman, (Chapman Alliance) – smart people whose job it is to notice what’s happening and make sense of it. For me, no real surprises here, just validation.
>> We’re all trying to figure out how to exploit informal learning in a more strategic way.
>> Creating learning assets in small chunks using a rapid process is more and more important.
>> HR practices related to talent management and performance management need to be integrated with the learning strategy (and/or vice-verse).
>> Operational success depends on alignment and efficiency.
>> An “easy” advancement is to wrap web 2.0 functionality around most learning experiences to support application and ongoing development.
>> Deep specialization may be making a comeback. (News to me, and exciting if true.)

Future of higher education and degrees in our field. At this point, we continue to operate in a world where the brand name of the program you graduate is part of your cachet. (Although hiring managers say the degree only “counts” for a few years; then they begin to wonder how you’ve kept up with the field.) As the web opens up possibilities more and more, consider a world in which you might “study” under a variety of well-known figures, ending up with a wealth of experiences and a portfolio of exceptional work instead of a “degree.” Will good “professors” still need or want to associate with a branded program, or can they become their own brand? Will people seek and gain a deep understanding of underlying theory and research or will practice portfolios trump everything? Mmm…. (Thanks to the Will Thalheimer, Allison Rossett, Curtis Bonk, and Fran Keefe who engaged in a lively panel on the subject of advanced degrees in the field that got me thinking in this direction. These are my thoughts, though, not theirs.)

Informal learning. This subject was definitely the featured topic – encompassing both collaborative technologies (web 2.0) and knowledge management concerns. I think organizing and designing informal learning assets is a critical emerging skill area for our field, but I worry as well. We learned a long time ago (see The Social Life of Information(2000) by John Seely Brown and Paul Duguid) that having access to information does NOT necessarily lead to learning. We can “push” or “feature” key knowledge assets, but just accessing and reading those assets doesn’t mean people will know how to apply the information appropriately. And compiling assets won’t help people to distinguish between what they should truly know and what they merely need to know how to find. Information alone won’t build skills. So while I think that we need to build up information assets and ensure ease of access to them, we also need to build other kinds of self-study assets that help people to learn relatively independently, or that help people to work with those who can be good coaches and mentors. In embracing informal learning, let’s not abandon our learners. (Thanks to Marc Rosenberg, Bryan Chapman, and others whose presentations brought forward various aspects of the informal learning challenge.)

Magic. There’s a lot to be said for holding a conference in Orlando in mid-March. The topics were thought-provoking; the ideas were timely; the hotel’s poolside was relaxing (and perfect for gathering thoughts and catching up with people between sessions); the weather was beautiful; and the Disney parks were inviting. All in all, it was a fine place to spend a week. Thanks to the eLearning Guild for a great event.

Armonizzare la domanda e l’offerta di know how all’interno dell’azienda, cortocircuitando il malcapitato e l’esperto

Laurea in filosofia o affini

If you read some of the predictions for 2009 that were compiled by Lisa Neal Gualtieri at eLearn Mag

If you read some of the predictions for 2009 that were compiled by Lisa Neal Gualtieri at eLearn Magazine, you may have noticed that people foresee a resurgence of informal learning, especially in new, e-mediated forms. But let’s be cautious. At the top of the eLearn Mag list, Alison Rosset predicts “More technology, but not necessarily more sense about how to use it.” For every learner that’s ready to “go rogue” as Janet Clarey predicts, there are may more learners who are poised to be left in the dust if we are not careful.

Fans of the millennial generation tout their ability to use the internet to research, connect, and collaborate. But I am not quite so sure. While I agree that many people have developed some savvy with really cool tools, using those tools for learning is a different skill set. One of the challenges I think we need to address is the need to teach people a new way to learn. Seems an oymoron, I know, but I have company in this concern. Tony Karrer posts on this topic regularly, and he’s been doing a series of posts lately that explore the issues. Many schools are not teaching new work skills, and many employees are well beyond school and could use some help in developing these skills as well.

What exactly are we talking about here? I’ve been doing some research on the subject. Based on Tony Karrer’s Knowledge Work Framework and other posts (see Tony’s post for some of those links), articles, and even some book references on the subject , here’s what I think those new skills look like. As you read down the list, you might be moved to comment that these skills (left column) aren’t really all that new – and that’s quite true. But how we actually engage in these skills is dramatically different (right column). Those of us who remember doing research by browsing the big green citation index reference books can clearly see the difference between that work and an academic database search (and thank goodness!). The skills ARE different. Here’s what I mean:

There has been some terrific work done in trying to identify and promulgate these skills: Web 2.0 for Learning Professionals, Route 21, Jane Hart’s Guide to Social Learning, along with countless articles and workshops. But the feedback I’ve heard is that what we’ve been doing to help is still quite overwhelming to those who aren’t tech savvy (and even to some of those that are).

So before we let loose and embrace informal, self-directed, e-mediated learning as the way to go, let’s pause and make sure that we’ve prepared our learners so that they can be effective in using new tools to that end. Everyone’s learning can benefit from savvy use of technology and some good old fashioned instructional design might be useful to craft courseware and resources that can support learning how to learn in these new ways.

I’m sure others have wondered the same thing, but were afraid to ask. Being more of a print designer

I’m sure others have wondered the same thing, but were afraid to ask. Being more of a print designer than a web designer, I really didn’t know exactly what Web 2.0 was. Besides using a blog to draw traffic to my site. Well now that I am doing some web design and web images now I had to find out more about Web 2.0. So this is my take on the subject.

Web 2.0 supposedly stands for the second generation of the web; whose users focus on collaborating and sharing of information. Instead of one way highways we now have a community driven web experience. This makes using the internet personal again.

The way users collaborate and share information is through the use of blogs, social bookmarking sites and RSS feeds or really simple syndication. These devices give the web user and the website owner an opportunity to exchange thoughts and ideas. Business owners should use this opportunity to connect with clients and potential clients. Get a website or at least a blog setup with RSS feeds. Then post to your blog when you can, and then bookmark them. Of course you should read other blogs and put bookmarks to them also.

Other elements that make web 2.0 what it is include rounded corners on boxes instead of the standard rectangular shapes. Images now have a reflection instead of a shadow. (I like the sleek 3-D effect it gives the image.) Whitespace is OK to use in web design now. Once upon a time information was packed into a website, not anymore. This makes reading a lot easier. Finally, larger fonts are being used. This aids in drawing a reader’s attention to a headline or highlighting other important information on the webpage.

This pretty much covers what web 2.0 is all about. We could delve deeper but that would make for a really long article. Let’s save it for another time or two. If you need help with your web design give me holler.

Till next time,
Joann
